I've never seen it before in a game but it feels like a very stupid mechanic I can't think of a place for. Maybe survival horror for tension or a survival game?
I don't inherently hate the idea, but I feel like it would work best in a game with better visual distinctions between rooms. Limiting the player's map usage works if you give them landmarks to navigate with instead
Technically not _their_ actions, considering all the secret alien cutting up bullshit was a secret program most crewmates probably didn't know about. And c'mon, you really except a boomshoot that ends with a escape to Earth to *not* have a sequel where the enemies invade the planet?
When I was playing this there was the question of how the game was going to handle progression, because in Metroidvanias you usually get at least one mobility tool and... well, the game's a pure 2D environment with minimal input buttons. So the teleporter was a neat surprise to me.
It's going to be a prequel where you play as the Scientist and do all the litany of horrific, villainous shit mentioned in the Ship Logs before blasting off into space to escape the angry alien army on your tail
I am about like a third through this video and i have seen videos and pictures of this game before and i always just thought it was just another modern Wolfenstein clone but in space but this is way more complex and interesting than i originally gave it credit for. So congrats Civvie, you're officially responsible for at least one extra purchase of this game

Actually, considering the ship logs that detail the horrific actions of this scientist under orders from this mysterious "general" make it back along with the surviving crew, I think a better idea would be this: You play as an alien who initially comes to Earth seeking revenge upon humanity, but at some point after your arrival, you discover that not only did the rest of humanity find out about what was done to your people, but that they were PISSED about it and ready to hold this "General" accountable for it all. And so, in a desperate bid to avoid any punishment for the actions they orchestrated, the "General" wages a war to try and subjugate humanity under their rule so that they can't be punished. So now the aliens and humans both have some SERIOUS beef with the same guy and his goons.
I appreciate you being fully honest with the flaws of this game, particularly as you did like it-most people give indie games a lighter touch because it feels like you’re punching down if you don’t Also that thing about the shockwave and the slide being inconsistent against the robot boss is an intresting point- turns out fluff text does need to be gotten right and mechanics need to be both intuitive and consistent
I'm so happy for the INCISION mention at the beginning of the video. It's become my favorite so far due to just how punishing and grotesque it is, and the highest difficulty feels justifiably hard. Can't wait.

one thing i have really come to admire in cv videos is his honesty about difficulty and identifying which end the problems on and accepting sometimes he brings these problems on himself, i know it draws those gg nerd comments but it makes games with a punishing difficulty feel more accessible to my newb skills.

Great vid, Civvie! I'm hoping you'll cover American Mcgee's other game in between Bad Day L.A and Alice Madness Returns: American Mcgee's Grimm. It's actually pretty solid. Also Roger Jackson voices literally every single character in the game. It's a good time killer and the humor is pretty good too. It's a bit repetitive and derivative, but that's because the game initially came out with one episode per time, each episode being a different fairy-tale or classic story.
I'd say this game is less Metroidvania and more Megalovania since the game looks like it took its major inspiration from MegaMan Deathmatch. "At least it looks like it did anyways."

I'd say this game is less Metroidvania and more Megalovania since the game looks like it took its major inspiration from MegaMan Deathmatch. "At least it looks like it did anyways."

The Megaman comparison is actually quite fitting. I'm pretty sure there's some Megaman Doom mod that goes off the artstyle of the first few games, and Exophobia looks a lot like it.
Megaman 8Bit Deathmatch immediately comes to mind, not sure about a single player Mod/TC though.
