    6:30 "I really want to hate these Behringer budget microphones, I really want to... but I don't.' I had an experienced audio engineer have a similar reaction to a pair of Behringer B-5 mics I asked him to test. He said almost the exact same thing about the pair of B5s. Behringer provides a great service. Their stuff from a price/performance ratio is impressive. Is there better sounding gear available? Often, yes. But their gear allows the bulk of starving artists to be able to capture quality sound for a reasonable cash output. Any company that does this (without violating IP copyright laws) gets my appreciation.

    this review helped me choose this mic for my interviews. I interview a lot of seniors and the dynamic mics were a little too in your face for comfort. I found my other condenser mics were too large and made my subjects a little uncomfortable by the overwhelm of a giant unfamiliar mic. But this is sensitive while appearing normal and familiar. and the price point is great as I will eventually get four of these for group settings.

    I was impressed by a couple of things. It sounded great on the acoustic, but I wasn't so surprised by that. What surprised me most was that it sounds pretty natural and flat compared to most of those other vocal condensers which seem to have accentuated high-ends. Not that that can't be nice in a live situation, but it's nice to have a choice of vocal condenser that doesn't do that. The other thing that really impressed me was the handling noise. It was so much better than even Behringer's Beta58 copy. I also thought considering how high (200hz) the high pass filter is set, it sounds pretty natural. I wonder what the slope is.

    Bander, PLEASE do a video showing this mic with 2 pop-sponges on it. I put a pop sponge filter within a larger one, then slid it onto this mic, and the resulting sound is absolutely stunning, with a gorgeous proximity effect if you eat it (and plenty of dual-pop-filter control over P-pops). This has suddenly become my go-to mic for clarity and gorgeous sound. It was a bit tinny in the highs, and weak in the lows, before. Not so if you add a gob of sponge material and eat the mic. Absolutely amazing sound, now!

      I have been doing the same with all the mics which are too large to accept the huge Shure A81WS, I put the small windscreen inside of the RØDE WS2 and I agree about the result.

    So my band had been using 3 Blue Encore 300s on stage for about 6 years and mine died, so I looked for a new 300 and they were no longer made. So In a pinch I picked up the Behringer SB 78A until I could find a replacement for my 300. I was very shocked that I liked it better with both our Presonus Studiolive console and our Pair of 2 UAD X8P Apollo Rig we use for club shows. It works very well and I rarely have to EQ it live, it's mostly flat with a SSL gate in expander mode and a touch of SSL channel compression. We use in-ears on stage but we have 3 floor monitors as backups just in case of a headphone issue. The Behringer SB 78A worked so well that I ended up getting 3 more and replacing our drum mics with them (I did change the head grill to save them from drum stick death). The SB 78A requires a lot less work just to sound good and for $40 you can't really complain with the Shure Beta 87A is $260, you can buy 8 of the Behringer's for the price of one Shure Beta 87A.

    Whichever test you ran and even in comparison with the Shure original, I was really impressed with this mic. I am using Behringer frequently (board, mics, pres, DI boxes etc.) and for the money you cannot go wrong. This one will be my first handheld condenser - I was looking at the Sennheiser condensers but for $45 I will happily try a Behringer first. I liked the Behringer's tone more than the Beta 87A's and loved how little proximity effect was noticeable, I might be happy enough to not have to get any $250 Sennheisers :)

    I like the relative flat curve of this mike, good sensitivity and versatile use. Not only instruments or singing, even stereo recording or as podcast mic it's a good choice (there to many boomy and/or zizzeling 'studio style' mics out there, or, sorry, dark sounding SM7b types with little sensitivity)
    With correction file you can use it as simple back up measureing mic on top.
    With easy mods (damping, mesh, foam) you can tune it to your needs for live usage if needed.

    Behringer is hit or miss on the important metrics of performance and quality. When they are on, they are a very good value. I have a few fellows that use their amps and love them. Some use the mixers and hated them. Mics, I had a couple. Nothing amazing but not crap either. It is good value if your expectations and projects match up to them.

  • @WonkeyWabbit
    @WonkeyWabbit 4 года назад +2

    The sensitivity should really be quoted by Behringer as -48dBV/Pa, as just "-48dB" has no meaning without a reference level. For comparison, the sensitivity of the Shure Beta 87A is quoted as -52dbV/Pa, so the Behringer is slightly more sensitive than the Shure, which is probably to be expected given that it looks to have a larger capsule.

    • @SGBass

      @@SGBass It is, though it's still fine for a hand-held stage mic (and in the general 'average' category for capacitor mics in general). You hopefully won't be using it to record distant string quartets!

Can you please help me with my setup, I got a blue yeti a long time ago for streaming, but now its unusable for teaching online classes because it picks up so much background noise. The thing is, me and my wife teach at the same time in one room. We each have our own mics and computers and we are just 4 feet apart from each other. After a few days of research, I found out that dynamic cardioid microphones are the way to go. I am wondering which mic should I get
    I was looking at the Audio Technica AT2005 since it is at my desired price point. Do you think it will still pick up her voice when I'm using it? I can send a pic of the room if it helps

    Hello Bandrew, thanks for the great review !
    Would you say the SB 78A is a good upgrade coming from a xm8500 ? It would be mainly for spoken voice and maybe livestreaming. I was also thinking about the sE Electronics V2 since it's within budget and you seemed to have liked it a lot. Sound wise I like the SB 78A better but the V2 being a dynamic means it would work better with what i want to do.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  10 месяцев назад +1

      My question would be: why do you want to upgrade from the XM8500? What's wrong with it and what are you trying to solve. Are you trying to solve a problem or just upgrade for the sake of upgrading. If you're not trying to solve a problem and this mic does not resolve that issue, I'd suggest holding off and saving your money.

  • @sirnigelcogs

    It sounds a little sibilant to me but for its price it seems decent. The other microphones sound better but of course they're more expensive. This seems like a way for someone to get into the handheld condenser market at a reasonable price with reasonable quality.

    • @sirnigelcogs
      @sirnigelcogs 4 года назад +1

      @apologiz tome The Samson Q2U is a very popular option for a USB dynamic microphone that'll sound decent while not having much background noise. I'm not sure what you mean by wanting to sit far. Regardless of which microphone you use, you should always position it reasonably close to yourself.

    • @dpb.97
      @dpb.97 4 года назад +2

      I use Rode M2 as my main stage mic. It's great to have a condenser for situations when you deal with people who don't know how to properly position themselves in front of a mic (one lady once was standing about 40cm to the side, still got a usable signal). Also it's great for guitarists (those who don't "eat" the mic), they move a bit to the right or left, back and forth, doesn't matter, still i'm getting a nice signal. Sorry for my bad english.

    • @GeneWaddle
      @GeneWaddle 4 года назад +2

      @@dpb.97 Thank you. As I was writing that I did think of people who don't know how to use a mic. I suppose it would be useful for, let's say, a quartet singing who don't mind sharing a mic. I always hated that. I guess there are use cases for them. For what I do I'd stick with dynamic for me. Thanks again for the reply. 🙂

      I don't know what you mean by star options. The ATR2100x should be more than sufficient for the application you outlined. You would need to determine what it is that you dislike about the ATR2100x and then determine if the options you outlined actually resolve those issues.
      It's easy to fall into the trap of wanting to upgrade or make lateral movements with gear because gear is fun, but I advocate upgrading with a specific set of issues you're trying to resolve instead of upgrading for the sake of upgrading. Hope that helps.
