As a Japanese person with knowledge of Japanese history the sadist part of this whole controversy is that people are still giving Ubisoft money.
Now as somebody just hearing this argument is going on why did they pick the one black dude in all of japanese history instead of thier first japanese character? Oh I know it's ubisoft and they want this argument to happen so they can try and sell thier shity game for the 50th time without actually making any improvements or trying in the story at all ffs why are we thinking about buying a ubisoft game rn?

Well yeah, racists would think it's a shit idea
The biggest issue is that this is the first AC where you play as a real historical figure. It eliminates the suspension of disbelief that comes with all AC games where they can stretch the true events and blend them with the fiction they create where you play as a fictional character interacting with those examples of real people. There is no way to do that here because there IS historical evidence and written documents regarding Yasuke. He is really important part of black history for a lot of people, but the truth is that he didn't really do all that much. He was simply a retainer and bodyguard for Oda Nobunaga. He liked the fact that this foreigner was tall and had dark skin, and wanted to keep him around. He quickly befriended Yasuke despite Yasuke not being anything close to fluent in Japanese, but the guy never became an official samurai, despite what people on Twitter might say. I think Yasuke is a cool piece of history that should be adapted properly, but in the case of AC he's a terrible fit.
Like if he was trully running around cutting down people i think people would have made him disappear politicaly or otherwise

@@paulodelima5705a black assassin….. in japan?
@@paulodelima5705are you correcting him? Both things are true…
That's funny... MY WALLET SAYS *NOPE*
There are 3 problems:
Firstly, every single Assasins Creed game had protagonists that were specifically native to the region. A Middle Eastern man in the Middle East, an Italian in Italy, a half Native American, half white person in colonial America, a Norseman in Scandinavia, etc. Now they're in Japan and the protagonist wasn't even native to the region or an important character that had an impact on the region. He was taken as a slave, given to the Jesuits, who gave him to the Japanese at the age of 27 or 28, where he became a glorified swordbearer and was then exiled from because his lord died. He may have been a samurai or he may not have been. One could also argue the only reason he wasn't used as a slave or adjacent was because his skin colour made him a status symbol for his lord. He was big and strong and black - obviously he stood out and obviously his lord wanted to utilize that.
Secondly, Ubisoft has never used actual real life people from history as protagonists in the Assassins Creed games and now, in order to have any retort when people have a problem with a black samurai, they use the ONLY black person that was ever mentioned as (maybe) attaining that position....as a main protagonist.
Thirdly, we all know WHY they did it. They don't give a damn about their own consumers - the people that make them who they are as a company. And that's what pisses people off the most. That Ubisoft would think we're all either stupid enough to accept them rewriting history in order to make extra profits.
And personally, as an addendum: I don't really give a damn about the skin colour of a fictional character in a game. But that is where the problem lies for me: the character isn't fictional. I love history and I love truth. I love knowing what ACTUALLY happened. I'm a huge history nerd. That is why what they are doing makes me mad.
This.
No AC was completely accurate. Skin colour is mild compared to Odyessey or Valhalla or really any of the others.
Thank you! I totally agree with you, the only time they used a real person as the protagonist for an AC game, its a black guy in an Asian country.
This is genuinely disengenuous from Ubisoft, which isn't a surprise at this point.
Nah their is no issues only weirdos make problems out nothing
You play Assassin's Creed for historical realism? Lmao
no ones saying Yasuke isnt real. What doesnt make any sense is how hes a main character thats a samarai in this time period. He feels completely out of place in the setting just so Ubisoft can check a box.

@@DemonSesshyy We all know that everyone thinks about a non famous errand boy / slave when we hear the word samurai.
The problem is that we all know the samurais were Japanse. When you're constantly reminded that the playable character doesn't fit the story it is difficult to get immersed.
That's why the game is gonna be terrible no matter how good it is.
Only racists needs representation in video games. The rest of us don't care as long as it makes somewhat sense. No white main character in Africa, No black main char in Asia and no Asian main character in Europe. It's really not that difficult.
Maybe the point is that he's out of place? Gives them a reason for things to be explained to the player.
Also he was never a samurai.
@@DemonSesshyy it is true that the Japanese media portrayed him a lot but he's a very niche icon when you try to ask how popular he is to any Japanese people
The fact that woke snowflakes all over are scrambling to try and justify the choice of a black samurai ("there was this anime and also this one film and I don't know history, but I'll just make it up" or whatever) is enough evidence this was not a good choice and yet another sign of the damage shitty DEI companies like Sweet Baby Inc. have been doing to games and other entertainment media. Asmon is basing the piracy issue entirely on his experience. As it turns out, he isn't entirely wrong.
Pirating games used to be big 10 or 15 years ago, and it is still huge outside of America. What you need to understand is that "always online" does not stop games from being pirated. All it does is stop online services on the pirated copy. Only games that require server services like mmorpg and survival games Rust and such can't be pirated.
The reason that pirating is lower in America is because today, if you pirate games, your ISP will cut off your internet connection, call you and ask you to stop. Otherwise, they will report you for it. How to avoid this? VPN. Did you notice how VPN was on the rise about a decade ago? It was because of pirating, not security.
It doesn't really matter who is right in this.
What matters is that in a Japanese setting people want to play a Japanese character.
End of story.
exactly.
Or even more general than that, people just want a fun game without racial politics distracting from the fun game.
But then people will call you racist for saying that, lol.

@@bloodlotus_ that's what you get for into politics.
I think his point is that this is ubisoft, so it will probably have MANY other problems besides the black protagonist
Agreed. Asmon is also downplaying the problem. This will probably be the number one reason as to why people won't buy this game. I won't be buying it simply because the protagonist, which the story revolves around, has been picked as part of a western political agenda. So many important figures in Japan's history and they end up picking a black guy who surrendered during his first battle and a woman, I wonder why..
The thing that matters to me is that: They would NEVER put a white or japanese man as the protagonist of an AC set in an african country. Therefore they also should't do it the other way around.
samurai is a social class. westerners associate the word "samurai" with armour wearing sword swinging warriors. yasuke was neither.
In the west, the closest thing we have is a knight.
To become a knight, you would need to come from a family of knights, or show outrageous skill on the battle field.
And as far as I can tell, it would be easier to become a knight, than a samurai.
The claim "retainer means he was a samurai", seem to be people who think a foot soldier and a general is the same, because they both serve in the army.

Naw Dog that was a Ingram
It's another example of Asmon not knowing what he's talking about. If a non-AC game does this then most people wouldn't mind. But as an AC game, there are two established relevant expectations: 1) The protag is fictional, and 2) the protag is native to the society of the game world. Yasuke breaks both expectations, which makes many series' fans feel betrayed, *ESPECIALLY* Japanese fans. I think anyone (Asmon included) can tell that the decision to feature a real historical person as protag is *VERY* intentional, and *VERY* convenient as an excuse to exclude a Japanese male protag. This is about racial representation within the AC series, NOT games that take place in feudal Japan in general. Also, literally no one says Yasuke ruins the gameplay.
On minor points: While I agree that the historical accuracy isn't the point here, Asmon's argument for it is garbageーthat nobody really knows about the past, and history is just opinions. History isn't completely objective and it's not above criticism but this is just anti-intellectualism. Another point is about cultural sensitivity. Asmon understands why the Japanese are upset, and he doesn't care. Fine. But would he be ok if Ezio gets swapped with an Asian? Would you be ok with that? Remember we're only talking about racial representation here, historical accuracy is irrelevant.
EDIT: One more thing, "wanting to force a black protag" is a charitable read. The less charitable read is that ubisoft wants to fetishize massacring Japanese/Asians as a black man.

The black samurai aspect is a distraction from the greater controversy of the selling model that Ubisoft seems determined to impose.
It's the opposite. This pricing structure isn't new. No clue why people are acting like it is. Every AAA game has more expensive options. They also aren't the first to charge 30 dollars for early access. Is it annoying? Yes. But let's not pretend it's new.
The important part about Yasuke is that he was not an important figure in Japanese history. Ubisoft could have chosen from many renowned samurai at the time. They only chose him because he's black and they want to push their DEI agenda. That's racist and cultural appropriation.
A story about rising up from being an enslaved retainer sounds good though. The marketing tells me thats *not* the angle they're taking.

I find it funny, "AC has never been historically accurate" while at the same time "Yasuke is based on a real historical figure so he should be the MC".
The only thing AC games have been historical is the time and place and important historical people at that time being there, but they play around with a lot of the info, like Da Vinci being a weapon maker and George Washington being a Templar. As long as the time, place, and historical people of that time is correct, it's free real estate. They change the background of the characters to fit the story. So Yasuke being a samurai might be the change they did to make it fit the story they are telling.
And literally every other assassin's creed main character throughout the years (Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, Shay, Arno, Frye twins, Bayek, Cassandra, Eivor and even Naoe ) are all made up characters. They knew it would make no sense to have a made up African character so they just picked a convenient historical figure.
@@Hans-andersen Exactly, and the two arguments from op are answers to different questions the first one "AC has never been historically accurate" is in response to people saying he was never a samurai like it actually matters is fiction and the second one "Yasuke is based on a real historical figure so he should be the MC" i dont think people are saying that but is seems some people have problems in admiting that he actually existed!
And the story they're telling us is probably laced with DEI. So tedious..
I find it hilarious that AC's main characters have always been fictional but all of a sudden they gotta make it an actual historical figure because it's an opportunity to use the DEI framework
it is not about what it's true or not , this is about ALWAYS using a damn POC as main characters in a setting which has nothing to do with it. it's like turning all street fighters characters black or turning all tekken characters or dragon ball characters black . i don't want to see only POC main characters i want different characters in different colors with different designs. we don't care about representation , we want to see different things . This is freaking japan not africa and people want to see a japanese dude obviously not an african dude.
and the thing is why are they doing this right now? why not way before with the first AC games? it is because of the woke agenda , simple as that .
"it's like turning all street fighters characters black or turning all tekken characters or dragon ball characters black", except it's not at all. It's one black character and you have another japanese protag to play as. Funny how everyone just conveniently ignores her. Or do you not like women either?
@@romofin i wouldn't be surprised if capcom goes woke and does it in the future. as for AC , she isn't the main character.
It’s not really matter if he’s a samurai or not, it’s a game, it’s partially fictional already. But for me, it’s “do I really have to play a black person in Japanese chapter of AC?” and “are they really going to sell at these prices?”.
Geez, I’m not being racist but do we got to play black persons everywhere, even for a story from 400-500 years ago Japan? Why is a male JAPANESE samurai a worse choice?
I don't think this is a "bold choice", seems more like a cowardly choice to appease the woke crowd.
From following X (Twitter) it happens because the people working on the game are artists who like 'artistic expression' and there are not many art jobs for art people. So the artists create woke stuff knowing that the job they've been given is temporary. They take their pay check, leave the company, and brag to their friends on Twitter about the woke stuff they have done.

conservatives will blame everything on "woke" stuff and not on the actual companies who produce the games.
Speaking as a Filipino looking at all this drama, I think everyone involved in it is blowing a small issue out of proportion. A lot of stories based on history will always use either a completely fictional character or an obscure IRL individual with creative liberties that fits in with the historical inspired plot, I will use Ghost of Tsushima as an example.
Jin Sakai, Lord Shimura, and Khotun Khan from the top of my head are purely fictional characters with probably some inspiration from true to life individuals. However, regardless of their status of reality, they still served their purposes as the driving forces of the game's plot surrounding the Mongol invasion of Japan. Khotun Khan as the main leading figure behind the Mongol army, Lord Shimura being the representative of the few samurai that resisted the invasion, and Jin Sakai metaphorically being the "Storm" that drove the Mongol army away.
If these fictional characters were able to serve well as the main driving forces of Ghost of Tsushima, why not obscure characters taken with creative liberties? Yasuke has that obscure connection to the Sengoku period, and I can at least commend Ubisoft for actually taking advantage of that to create another angle to view the unification wars of that time. Though, only time will tell if the character itself will fit in to the story they will tell. As it was with previous AC titles, and all of them utilized historical events that they modified to better fit in the main driving forces of AC which are the Assassins and the Templar, from 1 to Black Flag, we were told of their Earth's history through the lens of completely fictional characters, and it was fine for us. But now that Ubisoft is going to use an obscure African man in Japan is when we should take issue of it?
Sure, almost every AC title had a protagonist that had a race and identity that originates from the countries where the games take place, but not all of them, take Edward from Black Flag for example. He was not Carribean is he? But he is one of the privateers who then turned into a pirate and then became an Assassin, he is closely tied to the "Golden Age of Piracy" for sure, but definitely he is not a Carribean man in race or identity. Besides, it's not like Yasuke is the sole protagonist of the game, Naoe is there too to provide contrast to him I imagine, since one is a kunoichi/ninja and another is a samurai.
All in all, you guys need to chill with Yasuke, ya'll made his presence in the game a bigger issue than it should've been considering the game isn't out yet so we still don't truly know about how his character will act in AC Shadow's plot. If anything, I agree with Asmon in so far as the pricing of the game is concerned. Great triple AAA games were cheaper than this, 70 dollars for a game? Ghost of Tsushima's release price was 60 dollars and still, I waited for a year for that price to eventually go down and thank God I did because the Director's Cut was released so I experienced the game in it's full potential for cheaper. And the fact that there's an option for a subscription instead, that's a possible steppingstone for a potential future where we don't truly own the games we play, and it's saddening.
People dont realize just how destructive dei is to storytelling. It destroys potential plots lines, it doesn't allow any risque moments and it forces a political message into it. There is a ton of restrictions and censorship that comes with it. You want to know why some games have bad stories or cringy dialogues? It's because of consulting firms that a lot of entertainment media has to go through! Story telling is super important to people it's why some of the best and most popular games have great story telling, some people view it as more important than game play just look at the walking dead games. And dei is just ruining it more than people realize and it's really sad and thats why i know thats why ubisoft made this character not for narrative but for money and for me thats really sad.
It also forces all stories to be told with the same or similar voice and perspective because it all has to be in a narrowly defined "acceptable" perspective.
Similar to how certain directors' movies have a feel to them (e.g. Quentin Tarantino) and you know their storytelling style when you see it. Only instead of a bunch of different styles and voices we just get the DEI style and perspective.
the fact that to get the whole game you need to shell out $120 should have made it obvious that literally all ubisoft cares about is getting money, they don't give a shit about making good videogames
That's a really good point. It turns stories into purposefully political messages and rearranges priorities that change the nature of the story itself.
Alright it's now officially DEI to choose a real person in history. Incredible take. And do you have future vision to already know his storyline is completely compromised? If not, how have you already come to that conclusion?
@KategariYami lol the fact you can't understand why people recognize it's DEI is willful ignorance. Every Assassin's creed game features a native of the culture/land it's set in. Of all cultures, Japan is incredibly monoethnic. Of all the people in history to choose, they chose the ONE single guy who wasn't some Japanese person of import. It just reeks of race swapping the role and a senseless, out of norm choice for the series. People are tired of having their games co-opted into political messaging to satisfy DEI and ESG scores.
Here's my take on why this part isn't actually isn't stupid drama.
The video game industry made us care about this stuff. The games media made us care about this stuff.
Ten years ago, no one would have cared about this use of the figure... but we have been forced to think about this kind of stuff because of how the game creators and media act; and now that we are noticing what they wanted us to, we're called bigots for it.
Gamers cannot win. Ever. They will always take whatever chance they have to try to insult us.
Beautifully put and exactly how most people feel about this.
This☝🏾. 100% percent.
Asmon trying to downplay this and act like DEI doesn't matter in gaming.
Well, if it doesn't matter, why are you doing it?
Based on
Exactly. The video brought up Afro Samurai, it was a shitty anime and an even worse game but everyone liked them because it was cool as fuck. The problem isn't that the character is black, not even that he's a samurai. The problem is the intent itself. And the way content creators including yong and asmon tiptoe around this, trying to divert the attention, is kind of cringe.

One of the ways they achieved this is by making all members of the Brotherhood completely fictional.
The Brotherhood is supposed to be a shadowy organisation that works behind the scenes.
That was one of their design elements that separated the historical context & accuracy.
If we were to implement the traditional design elements of an AC game, Yasuke would've been a side character that interacted with the Brotherhood.
Exactly this. The idea is that Assassins were shadowy figures in history. Actual historical figures have been in the games, but they were never part of the brotherhood.
which is exactly what they should’ve done. but despite what the people defending this choice think, ubisoft wanted a black protagonist by any means necessary.
The thing that irks me the most is knowing the why *for a fact* of choosing Yasuke; it was obviously a choice made, acting as a shield against criticism.
"No, no, we're not inaccurately portraying feudal Japan. Look here: there was this black guy with some sources implying he was a samurai, while never 100% confirming it as fact. We are not making this up."
They *knew* that this choice was so absurd that they broke their own rules by using a real historical character as their main character, just to be able to justify the choice. If you need to reach this hard to justify the character's existence, it shouldn't exist.
Furthermore, I'm tired of this multiple-protagonist bs that started with Odyssey. They could've ran with just the shinobi and left it at that. Had they really felt the need to include Yasuke somehow, they could've added him as an easter egg on the side.
Let's say Yasuke never existed. They make the main assassin a fictional black samurai. Crazy, right?
But Yasuke exists, so they dig it up and make Yasuke the main assassin
Point is they had to dig up the obscure historical fact to try to justify yet every previous main assassin in the game is completely fictional. They had to add the historical aspect to reduce backlash which is working yet it doesn't fit the game's traditional design, making it an obvious DEI
Yup. The assassins were originally called “The Hidden Ones” in AC origins
It’s not dumb. Why can’t we have a male Japanese protagonist. I just watched videos of yours on the Witcher talking about Europe fantasy being all white because it creates a sense of realism which helps with immersion for escapism.
These protagonists are not realistic. They’re dumb. And we AC fan which have been wanting Feudal Japan for a lonnnnnng time have a right to be angry.
We already have had 2 black male protagonists that are well liked.
Yea exactly. I feel like I've been saying "can we just have new protagonists from different cultures so we can hear more stories" my entire life and every time they do some weird out of place placating instead of just delivering what people want. This goes for Disney movies too. I genuinely want to see Disney movies on more cultures, but it will never sit right with me to change characters in a cultural story like that. Why not jsut show us new stories
Because that's not what they wanted to do??? They're the ones making the game, if you want that make your own game lol
It’s simple, vote with your wallet. Just don’t buy the game and companies will learn not to do it anymore. But like what asmon always says gamers have no self-control, when they are handed a piece of shit, they will eat it and say it’s chocolate.
All he can hear is "Defend us or we will cancel you hssss" in his hidden ear piece the "Corporation Dance" is a deaf dance 🤣
If you want a Japanese protagonist go play ghost of tsushima. It's a better game than all the new assassin's Creed games. Plus it just was recently released on PC.
i thought Assassins Creed was a single player game? what the fuck is a Season Pass for?
The problem is that when someone wants to watch or play a "samurai" game or movie; they almost always mean traditional samurai which is Japanese men.
While, yes, it's probably technically true non-traditional samurai existed throughout history they were far and away the exception and not the rule. It's disingenuous to suggest this is what people want when they mention the genre.
While I've generally been quite happy with more recent portrayals of black samurai in anime (they've all been quite good in my opinion and not at all focused on being DEI or having political language) I've been less thrilled with the female depictions. Why? Because for me it's USUALLY immersion-breaking when a female is taking on men head-to-head and winning contests of brute strength and viciousness. Women are usually depicted as being equally strong as men and tossing them around like rag dolls all while having a 115lb physique. I mean, these aren't even butch huge women we're seeing as the characters; they're princess build.
Women can absolutely be portrayed in a believable manner (in the same way a smaller man can be) but we're usually seeing overt political messaging designed to fool us into thinking women are equally as strong and brutal as men. For me, this is immersion-breaking and I don't like it. I don't even think most women like it; even if they're saying they want more of it, it's just based on feminist principles and is not something they genuinely want to watch.
who cares
Personally, the « samurai or retainer » debate is irrelevant to me since the game wouldn’t have been THAT historically accurate anyway. But can we please stop pretending that out of ALL the historical figures (which weren’t actually playable before by the way) available in japan , going out of your way to pick the ONE black guy (who’s been in japan for 15 whole months) as a protagonist instead of having him be a character you encounter along the way isn’t blatantly shallow (yes even with Naoe)? Especially coming from Ubisoft?
Why doesn’t someone just go to a museum.. and ask a person there what a retainer is and samurai.. lol.. don’t mention yasuke.. and see what htey says.. I’m pretty sure it’s more like a Paige. And samurai only by name.. does’nt mean its the bushido way lol
Agreed, arguing over the vague historical details is pointless
Agreed, i wanna play a Japanese guy in japan. Not a black dude thats so obviously shoehorned in because of the times we live in. Wouldnt suprise me if they even went and made yasuke gay and the female protag trans. Gotta check off all those ESG boxes for that money 💰
If the skin colour doesn't matter, I have a proposal:
Let's make a game about slaves in the 1800, in South Carolina, you can play as a black woman and the second character is a white male, as there were white slaves. Let's see how the representation crowd reacts to that and then tell me, why we should be fine to have a MC who was very insignificant to feudal Japan.
This is an idiotic comparison because Yasuke actually existed...

Controversy aside, going with Yasuke as a main character just does not work in this game because it breaks your suspension of disbelief. This is a stealth game set in ancient Japan and you're playing as a 6'2 black man who towers over the population by a foot and we're that is supposed to believe he can easily blend-in with the crowd and do everything unnoticed?
Asmongold himself said that there is no way to get immersed in this game because Yasuke is so glaringly out of place that your attention is constantly drawn to it.
He’s not gonna be the stealthy one. Naoe is
Borderlands came out and had no "CD-Key", allowing all of your friends to install the game and play with you, all from one CD. It sold millions and we all bought our copy soon or later, just because it was that good of a game. Gaming history has shown many times, way before crowdfunding was a thing, that piracy and profit aren't opposites. Consumer friendly marketing works best, except when the game is sh*t and you obviously have to rely on a (legal?) form of scamming to make profit.
Radiohead did something similar in 2007, back when every day, commercials would bully you into believing piracy kills artists. They released their album "In Rainbows" free for download with a "pay what you want" policy, which made the whole industry furious. What kills companies are bad products (here bad = target people don't like it). It has NEVER been consumer friendly monetisation.
Dude was the first black man in Japan and now he’s a historical figure there is barely any info on the man it’s fucking quota garbage from Ubisoft.
Is it crazy to want to play as a Japanese man lol dude the moment they showed him they lost a lot of sales. Period
That's true, I've seen videos that have 100k views complaining about the Mc and even if just 50% of those viewers refuse to buy the game, that's a lot of money wasted for no reason.
Idk, I don’t particularly care but since they’ve released HOT garbage after Black Flag, I’m good and I haven’t and will never give them another dime.
200k people liked the trailer, they'll get bank regardless of our choice.
Not true we know everything about him. he was a slave, sold as a slave, served Nobunaga and was shown around as an oddity to brag about. He was given a house and a sword, his lord was attacked, and he defended his home, lost, and then was again sold as a slave.
@Kid_Charlemagne for me the hot garbage started with Valhalla. What should have been a slam dunk was weak af. Mirage was absolute shit. I'll pass
They only picked a historical character as an excuse to shoehorn a non-Japanese male lead and make their fanbase mad
I'm never going to buy this game. Ubisoft is stupid, this game is stupid. I don't reward bad ideas and give money to people that introduce themselves to me by signaling they hate me. That's all there is to it. There is such thing as bad publicity.
Yeah they cherry picked this character so they could push their agenda. If this wasn't an assassins creed game, but specifically a seperate game about Yasuke, nobody would care, in fact most people would think it is cool as it can definitely be an interesting story. It's just that we know the game Ubisoft and their staff are playing, and after years of this bs, people are just fed up with it.

The point to me is hes been shoehorned into so many games already that it's clear its a shorhorn in and of itsself. Dude was probably a bad ass, but who cares, at this point its time for some actual local historical figures to get the limelight. If i was japanese I'd see this and id have to say at some point, come the F on already. There is an absolute mountain of influential historical figurse that are equally if not more interesting than this unicorn. To me, its just another Mary Sue moment in another cheap, half assed, AAAA game I wont be bothered to play. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
imagine if you go buy a car that you like and they sell it to you at 70k and they locked the 4th and 5th gear, but if you buy the luxury trim at 110k they will unlock the 4th gear, and if you on top of that you buy it at the motor show before the car hit the market at 130k they will gift you with all 5 gears functioning.
now, if you are willing to accept something like that, then you will also be ok with Ubisoft pricing.
The only thing that makes me crazy is: people be like "why him? Theres lots of natives" but no one says "that specific native samurai of that Era suits better"... I mean how can you be that sensitive if you never curious about this subject enough to wiki search this Era? Idk
The bottom line is it doesn't matter who/what Yasuke was, except that he was a real historical figure. Why did they find the one black guy in Japanese history to put in the game as a main character? We've never had a real person as a main character because the entire point of Assassins is that they're cloaked figures in history. He should be a side character. And we all know why he isn't.
assasins are cloacked ? they gave up on that a while ago. look at the VIKING in Valhalla. or jack the ripper in one of the DLCs
This is exactly my point as well.
I will even do you one better - regardless of what the facts are, I don't like the fact that they chose somebody from that specific demographic to be the protagonist in a Japanese themed AC game. Y'all can call me racist all you want. But, all that aside, even if he was considered one of the best samurai that ever existed, even if he was one of thousands, it's still disrespectful to go this route.
Dude, if you want to have a black protagonist, then do it in Africa (again). But for real though, there are tons of legit African warriors that would fit right in, in a AC game - most famous of which would be is Shaka Zulu - the literal most famous African warrior king
All of that being said, I don't really care since I the only AC game I have an official copy of is Black Flag - and I don't plan on buying any of Ubisoft's trash going forward. I'm just here to throw my 2-cents in
@@iliilliliiliilliliiliillil9137 so no one can make a game about yasuke and anyone that does is being disrespectful ? liek i get what you are saying but you cant gatekeep historical figures being represented how a person or a company feels in a video game. you just cant. its not like they made up that he was in japan. he was in japan. wouldnt be wierd if everyone was terrified of putting the black guy in their game because he isnt set in a country that is black dominated ? and there are non blacks in africa. pokimane is african for example ( so is elon musk but we know why his family is)
And they did this in the wake of johnny somali incident, as if trying to smear the fact into our face. Like, WTF? Rude.
Yes, that's what makes it so obvious. They knew that having black samurai as the main character will not feel authentic, so they broke their own rules to prepare some justification in advance. "It's fine, because for the first time we chose a real historic figure. See, one black samurai did exist". They are basically acknowledging it is very questionable decision by executing it this way, with the excuse attached.
It matters because they'll turn it into a flag to wave and a shield to hide behind. No matter how bad the game is, they'll claim it was all only because gamers are racist.
Points out obvious facts
Ubisoft- That's racist you racist gamer lmao

this is actually the only reason they did this and the only explanation that really makes sense
@manroyad They do it because it suits their politics to make race a focus of everything they can and to grab for social clout by calling anyone who disagrees racist. @@RBFR01but dont buy our game if you dont like, go away.
A retainer; to be retained simply means you were hired.
Every single person who signed up when a daimyo and received compensation for work they did is considered a retainer
When you hire a lawyer you now have that lawyer on retainment they are not your employee per se but they still do 'work' for you when you ask and you pay them for that work
In regards to Japanese history a retainer was anyone who agreed and did/ would do work for a speficic lord of the time and place. This could mean you were retained as anything from a combatant warrior or a delivery man
In the case of yasuke the only certain documented work he did was as a page and that wasn't even for nobunaga it was a different daimyo all together so yes he was under retainer for two superstructure lords but there is bit a single record of him being retained as a samurai and the closest thing to combat he ever was documented engaging in was when akechi clan rebelled
yasuke basically got jumped have up his sword and the vassal to akechi clan in which this hairbrush is noted as saying 'he is not even worthy of death' they captured him and sent him to India where his story ended
The fact that the vassal to akechi clan was not even willing to kill yasuke means he was absolutely not a warrior by any means
For me I'm over debating if he's a samurai, retainer, etc.
I just don't like people constantly buying into obvious pandering attempts.
One thing that's a huge issue in what's left of the black community in North America, is how politicians and companies don't take us seriously and just resort to pandering to gain our approval.
I agree, they should be taking us seriously. But when people act like sliced bread was invented because a black character is in a form of media in the year 2024, can you really blame them for not changing their strategy?
I find it ironic and hypocritical that the same people calling those critical of the choice racist, are the same ones hooting and hollering because they think a black character makes something good or means they have to support it.
It's the same thing that happened with Obama. A lot of people mainly or only cared that he could be the first black president and that's all they needed to vote for him and unfortunately I was part of that crowd.
Of course there's racist people on both sides in the discourse, but society needs to do better when there's criticism surrounding someone who isn't white, male, christian, heterosexual, etc instead of immediately calling the critics bigots.
"AC has never been historically accurate why are you expecting accuracy?"

"Yasuke is a real historically accurate figure why are you complaining about him?"

Can't wait to drive Yasuke around in a 2024 BMW 8-series with heated seats while eating a Big Mac and listening to the Wutang-Clan since accuracy doesn't matter.
yeah they want to use the normie perception of the game's history of being acclaimed multiple times to be historically accurate, goal is to endoctrinate people and impressible young minds, not to catter to people that just "know" it's an 1000x extrapolation of reality. This is where the real stealth intent of all this is, target and modify young's perception.
the world they portrait is trying to be historical accurate, the Story of the games is not.
Meanwhile the trailer on the Ubisoft Japan channel: likes: 3771 < dislikes: 36840.
Did this happen because of a bizarre double-bluff 4D-chess 6000IQ conversation in a meeting where someone argued that the game having Japanese characters act in historically accurate way would be feeding stereotypes or be racist?
If I buy a game about assassins set in Japan I kind of want to be a ninja or a samurai or a ronin.
Imagine Ubisoft gives an official statement in line with how they are aware that there are conflicting, misleading information about Yasuke. Much is not known about him and that is ok since he is an assassin… You are not supposed to know.
That would ruin their narrative of what they're pushing for, blackrock and vanguard will lose trust in Ubisoft if they do that
The question is not whether he was a samurai or not. None of the other MC were based on real historical figures. Except this one.
What is the problem?
And for the people in the back:
This sudden change in trend is a way to hamfist a token black character into their game, for DEI. Do not be fooled, this isn't to respect the real person, this is to harvest the stock market value glitch that is ESG score
Ubisoft and their supporters will also use this character as a metaphorical shield to defend against any and all criticism regardless of the specific target of said criticism.

The last time I checked for the survey it says that 35% of gamers have pirated games. The issue is that the amount of games they pirated, when compared to the amount they played is tiny and very often includes games that are no longer available for sale.
I think the dumbest part about the black main character in Japan is that it's in assasins creed of all games. A game with a heavy stealth element that has you tailing people and blending into crowds.
How does a 6+ft black man blend into a crowd in feudal Japan? He doesn't whatsoever. Shit a 6ft black man is a head turner in Japan in the modern day.
I studied a bit of Japanese history at University, but mostly for the purposes of dealing with International negotiations. As for the argument regarding retainers being Samurai, yes Samurai were retainers who pledged to a lord in exchange for land. Samurai's started training at the age of 10, learning to fight on horseback as well as how to manage land. They were expected to bring equipment with them, because they were, generally, sons of nobles. This is in contrast to bushi who were warriors that directly served the daimyo, often elevated from the ashigaru (peasant soldiers).
Oda Nobunaga, changed this structure a bit, he created a class of full time soldiers and a mercenary corp that served only him. Yasuke, came to Japan for roughly 3 years and served as a koshō (page or squire), under Oda. Our records of Yasuke come from Jesuit priests who visited Japan and were fascinated to find a dark skinned man. They said Yasuke spoke little to no Japanese and he was seen as object of fascination. People attempted to wash the "ink" off his skin and were amazed it couldn't be removed. His name Yasuke was given by Oda himself, who gave him a house, sword and stipend to live off of. He travelled for a time with Oda, carrying his gear and seemed to have a close relationship with him despite the language barrier.
After Oda's seppuku, he appears to have continued fighting however he couldn't find a place in society without Oda. There are some unkind words from the lord, who captures him, regarding his status as a human. Rather than killing him he is sent with the Jesuit priests when they leave Japan, and it is believed he departed from them in India.
Was he a Samurai? In a strict sense no. There is a lot of confusion over him being a retainer, which is an English term. There were two types of warriors who directly served a daimyo, Samuari and Bushi. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, Yasuke would have been classified a bushi or warrior. A Samurai is a titled noble who can pass down his land and title, a bushi cannot. Oda, clearly valued him as a bushi and there is mention in the Jesuit notes that Oda might grant him land, but this never happens. When he is captured, following Oda's death, it is clearly stated his a man without land or status in that society, hence the decision to have him leave with the priests rather than execute him or demand seppuku.
Thanks a lot for sharing this. I've always found Yasuke to be fascinating in his historical sense, and among all of this turmoil regarding the AC trailer I really wished that everyone on either side of the argument could have taken the time to research his story because it truly is fascinating. I hope others see your comment and find something meaningful to take away from all this
An actual expert giving actually good information. Respect. You got my sub. Maybe you should make a RUclips channel and content about Japanese Medieval Society since you're quite knowledgeable.
I'm a person who really didn't like the idea of a black samurai in the game though reading your most informative comment it was a roller coaster of interesting.
I almost agree with everything except for him not being a Samurai, which is usually built on a generalization of how the caste system worked in Japan.
The identity and ranks of "samurai" were always in flux until they stabilized more in the Edo period to what many people would recognize as "samurai" today, we could accept he was a type of samurai but to definitively say he never was recognized in some fashion as capable or trustworthy to the effect he was a "samurai" by his contemporaries is a bit hard to comprehend. You'd have to wait 20-40 Years before the word "Samurai" becomes used in official documents referencing a caste after the time of Yasuke. Specifically, during the time of Tokugawa when they were fixed and officialized.
Based on the commentary by Ōta Gyūichi, it is hard to argue that Yasuke would not have been recognized as a samurai (low ranking or not) despite receiving a "stipend" akin to that of other retainers in Nobunaga's court.
It is true we don't have specific details on the military prowess or achievements of Yasuke, but it's also hard to say otherwise that he would have NEVER fought a battle or skirmish much less not accompanied at least one military campaign under Oda Nobunaga during his period of service (some historians would point to the conquering of the Iga province as a possibility - 天正伊賀の乱, We do know from the Jesuits that Yasuke had a Military background in India as a mercenary and explains why he was hired as a Bodyguard.
In essence, Yasuke was a "Koshou"(小姓) who always worked with Nobunaga, basically, Nobunaga gave Yasuke the rank of "shibun"(士分), which means “samurai status”. Yasuke was given the same status and privileges as referenced in the Ōta Gyūichi as an official samurai who sat on the council, but this status was extremely limited or merit-based. Incidentally, Nobunaga's highest-ranking “Koshou”(小姓) was Ranmaru Mori(森蘭丸), while Yasuke was the lower in those categories.
Here’s the full quote from the 1582 Annual Report of the Jesuit Mission in Japan. The on Yasuke was on:
“The black man understood a little Japanese, and Nobunaga never tired of talking with him,” and that “Some people in the town thought that Nobunaga might make him as tono [a high-ranking samurai].”
He was also given the honour of wielding a katana and a wakizashi (daisho) and samurai armour.
The combination of these two swords symbolized a samurai's honor and social power, with the katana representing his soul and the wakizashi his duty to protect.
Yasuke was also involved in several military battles and was involved in the critical Battle of Tenmokuzan in 1582.
Historical references include:
Jesuit Records: The Jesuit missionary Luís Fróis documented Yasuke's presence and service to Nobunaga in his letters and writings. Fróis described Yasuke's unique position in Nobunaga's court.
Japanese Chronicles: The "Shinchō Kōki," a chronicle of Nobunaga's life written by his retainers, mentions Yasuke. This source notes Yasuke's role and his presence during significant events, such as the Honnō-ji Incident where Nobunaga met his end.
Samurai Records: Contemporary samurai records and letters, such as those by Matsudaira Ietada, also reference Yasuke, noting his distinctive status and service under Nobunaga.
So he was most likely a samurai. He was even given a home and some land. He also had the same duties as a samurai.
They could have made Yasuke into an NPC who starts as a retainer, then later trains and becomes a Samurai due to the conflict within the story and everyone would have loved it.
Basis of the character would have been historically accurate, but events in the game would lead to character growth and a different path for Yasuke.
But saying "You're racist if you have a problem with playing a black character" & "Yasuke was a Samurai, this is historically accurate" are just the most bizarre strawman arguments to defend.
Uh huh, they could have just made Yasuke an NPC and these people would still be complaining about him being in the game period like they've complained about other black characters. Like in God of War, that's woke. Or Spider-Man 2 and Miles Morales also being 'woke' and 'pandering'.
Sorry, you might have a legit complaint but its being ruined by the racists that complain every time there's a black person in their video games.
Yasuke was never a samurai
I'm starting to think there are actual demons in these companies that feed off of people's emotions and they make these decisions just to get a reaction out of people so they can feed themselves.

You are reaching hard.
AC has always prided itself in main characters that are grounded in reality and try to accurately represent their ethnicity in the time period they exist within.
Digging around in feudal Japan's history in order to find the one black character that can have his existence explained was obviously an intentional thing that happened; it's pathetic. They did not *need* to do this. The choice goes against all prior AC games, and is pretty much a middle finger to the design philosophy of the original creators of AC.
This is the same principle that we've been seeing with new studios taking over the work of a previous one (like Bungie -> 343), or a film adaption of a video game (like Halo games -> Halo TV show); their hubris makes them think that they know better, and ignore the source material.

They don't give af about representation, they care about Blackrock money.
All samurai are retainers, but not all retainers are samurai. A retainer is simply someone in the service of a noble lord.
Yasuke was a pet cause he looked weird. Once Nobunaga was done with him he was sold to someone else and vanished from history. He's not the main character.
😊No one actually cares if he's a samurai or not. The point is the writers specifically chose a black character and a fictional female character instead of a native Japanese character as the one you play. And it got pointed out that they scrapped the original direction of the project to do this. Had Yasuke simply been an NPC, or even the secondary playable character to a Japanese male ninja, it would be way less controversial.
Aside the price point, people are tired of the blatant virtue signaling and the cancel mob whenever they complain about or point it out. The price is definitely going to put people off, but this new PR move toward attacking people who complain and calling everyone right wing bigots and extremists will lose them any goodwill they may have had left.

Why is it so important for people to insist that Yasuke HAS to be a side character ? Do you realize how that sounds ? One of the most important figures of this era: Toyotomo Hideyoshi was the sandal bearer of Nobunaga. Would people insist on him being a side character this strongly ? In a time of serious turmoil like the sengoku era, people don't realize the level of trust that is put on the One a Daimyo asks to carry his weapons and be by his side. There is virtually no reason not to explore Yasuke's story as a main character. Wouldn't also be pandering to put him on the side ? Just to ease these people's anger ?

To all the people that says the race doesn’t matter, why does race matter enough to you to not want a Japanese man represent Japanese history ?
I don’t know, ask Team Ninja.
Afro Samurai: Am I a joke to you?
That's why it's a super odd choice picking what they did. Given that's been what assassins creed was up until this one...

I mean crying about a game being unrealistic when, for the first time, it uses a real figure as a main character and has as a franchise had aliens in its story, and constant retcons and hiatorical contradictions is laughable.
If you want a historically "accurate" samurai game that plays like ac, play ghost of tsushima.
Is it too much to ask for a japanese protagonist in a game in historical japanese setting?
Ghost of Tsushima, Onimusha, Samurai Gunn, Samurai Warrior 1 through 6 I'd say it's been done plenty and that's not a full list.
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Naoe???
you do have a jap protag in the game
Yeah, it has. Doesn't mean it should be changed just bc of it. It's either gonna be The Last Samurai or this stupid movie with Matt Damon on the Great Wall. Either way it's just dumb, bit at least let's hope for a good game.
For the record Yasuke WAS just a slave who was gifted to Nobunaga, who then took a liking to him. His title was an honorary one, he was never known to have ever participated in any battle. After Nobunaga's death Yasuke was sold back to the European traders who brought him to Japan in the first place and never heard of again. He wasn't a major figure in that period despite what some activists are trying to claim. He was simply famous for being the first black person anyone in Japan had ever seen. Every historically accurate piece of writing about Nobunaga's reign that even mentions Yasuke goes against the claims of that "consultant" Ubisoft hired
Yeah, if he was truly titled to be a Samurai, it would have been recorded just like William Adams being the first englishman to become a Samurai.
It would be a huge deal if Yasuke became the first black man to be a Samurai.
No he wasn't people don't know own exactly what happen to him. Like asmon said we're just going off what people said 500 years ago we actually don't know.
@@jarroncarltonby that logic world history would be all unknown and lies.
History records exist, they're studied and the one with the most evidence and sense are taken as true. And in the case of Yasuke there is records from the people who lived at that time talking about him. Mitsuhide himself said in his letters that Yasuke was just a pet.
And everytime Yasuke has been brought up they try to glorify his history, and because of that it exists this discussion of what he was. If people keep trying to rewrite history in 100+ there will be the narrative that he was actually important for the history when in fact he was just a pet.
@@jarroncarlton that is an stupid argument, if we go by that logic you know nothing about historic and everything is relative , because every record we have is "what people said "

After Nobunaga was killed, Yasuke was forced out of the country. Shows you how important he wasn't.
We'll they did a good job at rewriting history online. For This One Video Game! Literally rewrote history. However they can't rewrite one fact. 15 months. That is the total of the amount of time of his recorded history in Japan. Hardly enough time to become a Samurai.

2:30 Samurai were nobility, its very similar to a knight. Picking up a sword doesnt make you a knight, being knighted or a birthright makes you a knight.
If he was a samurai there would be records of it. We dont even know if he learned to use a sword, he likely did not
He was in service for about 15 months i dont think so 😂
no he was a slv bought in africa an taken to japan by the owner then was bought by some one wink wink then sold again some time later
Piss off half the people that would have played, get the other half to defend the game with their lives and purchase the highest priced option. You make 100% possible still. Kind of genius
He was paraded around as Oda's conversation piece. The ONE time where it's written that he was involved in a fight they got their asses beat, and Oda was forced to X himself. Their enemy did not take Yasuke to be a serious opponent, and spared his life by just handing him back over to the Jesuits.
He was in Japan for 3 years. You'll never convince me that this dude, even if he WAS a warrior of some kind, fought like a Japanese Samurai, ESPECIALLY so if he was already trained before he got there.
It's a terrible choice to make him a main character. Obviously, it's their choice to make, it is what it is, that's the end of it.
I'm more disappointed that there's no Japanese man to play as. That's the true let down to me.
If anything, Captain David Fagan is a way better black historical figure in Asia than Yasuke with a lot more historical records. A black freedom fighter who defects from the US government and becomes a tagalog speaking general in the Phillippines after witnessing the treatment of Filipinos similar to what he seen back in America, Frees local slaves, and lives a happy ending, marrying a Filipina while avoiding assassination attempts from the US. It's a dope story. He's a mythical figure in the Phillippines and that's not debatable.
That sounds badass, thanks for sharing!
"Black Freedom Fighter" You just lost the interest of 85% of gamers
id pay for that one,
Yea but that’s the Philippines so it makes it seem like you’re saying Japan is the same thing. Lol
@@locdogg86 twisting the narrative
The reason people are fed up with it is because we all know why they picked Yasuke as a protagonist and it has nothing to do with him just being an interesting person and has everything to do with Ubisoft's diversity mandates.
Doesnt the game being in japan their first south asian centric game already fill that qouta

Marketing FOMO to increase preorders for a game makes me believe it’s going to be a trash game because they’re afraid once the game has released no one will want to buy it so you have to get as many orders in advance as possible.
Ubisoft stock dropped 15% when they announced this game 💀
rightfully so
They probably will make up for it with all the free publicity y’all are giving them.
@@Ocean5ix yep. It is viral marketing by controversy. Best just to ignore the game, as it is too expensive for what you are getting, and ubisoft games are basically re-skins of the same basic game. It is honestly: "if you are paying for a ubisoft game in 2024, it's your own fault".

also the game looks at best we play in china not japan rofl .
Assassins Creed has always embellished history. They made Leonardo Davinci part of a random revolution that didn't happen.
I don’t know. I think it’s suspicious that after all the AC games, now they decide to use a historical figure as the main character. Furthermore, instead of using a Japanese character, of which there is an abundance of historical figures in Japan, they choose the one African who barely left a spec on human history. It’s just very suspicious to me.
yeah the main thing is that got people mad is its set in japan and they wanted a Japanese main guy and choosing the one black guy out of millions of Japanese people to be the lead is a kick to the face and lets not forget people are already beyond sick and tired of this woke crap how you expect people to react to this lol i wonder if they did this in Africa or any black nation and then choose someone of another race as lead would we get the same reaction or worse lol

It's only dumb because a Japanese assassin's creed game with an authentic Japanese experience would be extremely successful, but ubisoft just couldn't help themselves with identity politics. It was a no brainer easy peasy money machine and they just couldn't help it lol.
They would have sold better than "the ghost of Tsutsima", because they would have dodged the current Sony hate.
But, they could not help themself.
An authentic experience in that period would still have yasuke because he is a real person.
However, what is the level of authentic you are talking about here? because to be really authentic, there would be no assassin's creed in japan because its a fictional setting in the first place.
Now I think DEI is stupid as well, but all these arguments against yasuke I feel are incredibly stupid, by people who have no idea why they're angry and are virtue signaling.

there are paintings of him holding an umbrella for nobunaga. while they were walking in the streets. he was not a samurai but he still was not your average servant. to be able to get close to the emperor himself means he is not average. and just because a person is not a samurai, it doesn't mean he cannot use a katana, spear or any weapon when there is a life and death situation.
