Being the utter casual that I am, hearing that this is the easiest Souls-like game is actually a positive mark for me. I've always been VERY intimidated by the Souls games, and as much as I loved watching my brother play Nioh, I never felt confident to take the controller and give the game a try on my own... This review feels really useful though - because you're being so even handed and thorough (as you always are!), I feel like I can consider obtaining this game and have reasonable expectations towards it.
On a somewhat hopeful note, perhaps there is DLC planned? Not that extra content can necessarily make up for a less than stellar initial offering, but maybe they won't just hang the game out to dry. From what you show here, and the things I've read in some other review articles so far, it kind of feels... well, for lack of a better analogy, it feels like homework turned in at 85% finished because the student ran out of time. The ideas are there, just not quite fleshed out...
Still. Excellent job, and thank you for taking the time to review this and make such a meaty video for us!

I have to wonder if the comparisons between this game and dark souls as far as exploration isn't really fair. Since SoP uses a mission based format instead of a large contiguous world I feel like the two can't be compared one to one.
Edit: Also, one of the lines you said near the end confused me. Around 21:00, you imply that this game is meant to be a reimagining of the original final fantasy, when it's very plainly stated to be a prequel, especially when it's spelled out so explicitly at the end of the story.

I'm gonna have to hit you with a big disagree on your complaint regarding story and lack of certain characters. Especially because this follows as the title says, the Origin. This isn't FF1, this game doesn't have to have every familiar character because as we see by the end, they are there, but are not relevant to the story. In fact said characters may be on reserve for DLC due to the fact there is DLC for it in the future, which means your gripe is coming off far too early at that. I won't go into details because spoilers, but this story went in the exact direction it wanted to and did it. By the end it just tells us something we didn't know yet

I will be completely honest. If it were not for the difficulty this game would not be worth much at all. I like how it looks and all, but the moment to moment gameplay and the boss battles are really where this game's strength lies. What I like best is working out the enemy and boss move sets, and which classes are best able to capitalize on their strengths and weaknesses while still fitting my playstyle preference. In a lot of Soulsborne type games there are bosses that are designed to screw over a particular character build, and make you ask yourself why you made your character the way you did. This game is no exception, but with the job system whenever you run into this wall you can figure out which job works best. If you feel that job is not strong enough then you can go back to earlier parts of the level and farm for a little bit to unlock some of the abilities and come back swinging. Which brings up another thing I really liked, and that is the number of jobs at your disposal. There are subtle differences in how each play and working to get them all really should be the main priority of the early game as more options present an easier gameplay experience. Once you get that done start working on your favorites so you have a good pool of abilities and moves to draw from, and once you are satisfied with how your classes are start working on getting your gear in order.

I dont agree that the jobs arent unique enough. Their unique passives and command make you look at the way you tackle combat differently. You will use different moves and wear different armor depending on the job you are. Since most jobs can use multiple weapons a Knight is going to feel different from a Warrior or a Red Mage who can all use Sword and Shield. This game shines when you arent using the crutch of the AI or playing on lower difficulties because enemies are much more aggressive and require more unique thinking about how you tackle them.

My wife and I went through the entire story on Hard, and now in Chaos grinding up and we are dreading going back into Tiamat, while the other 3 fiends weren't that bad lol. Dragon Zombie in particular could be a pain as a less notable boss but yeah a lot of bosses in the game definitely make you pay attention, think, and react quickly especially with the soul gauge, the unblockables, using your small s (unless you're assassin lol) to be as aggressive as possible especially against bosses like Lich

Technically Tiamat is designed for mechanic check. It’s the only reason why she’s in the beginning of the game. You can stun lock her so she can’t heal, use slash attack, and break her gauge by using abilities on her weaknesses. Tiamat make the coop make sense since they have that in the combo chain for abilities. Anything with air strike combo also work with her.

I agree with 80% of this review. Many of the gripes I too share.... But without getting TOO spoilery, this was meant simply as the prelude to FF1 and not FF1 itself. So I get what they were going for and when you look at it in that light, it makes sense why your main character is so angsty and well.... Vicious lol
For what its worth, gotta give credit where it's due, and FF hasn't exactly been known for giving anti-heroes the spotlight. They did that quite well in this game, even if the writing was shoddy at times. It's definately set up a plausible remake in the near future going back to its roots and much of it is due to Team Ninjas battle system.

Though I wanna say the biggest slap to this game's face is the marketing which unforentalty Square has major hit or miss in terms of games. Gameplay was fun as hell I won't lie on that plus some of the Jobs are interesting. I'll admit I don't the story much on 1 and 2 only really know that 1 was very basic and linear and I saw this as a chance to expand it more. I was right to a degree that it expand it but I didn't expect to a (SPOILER: A garland/chaos origin). hell the fact that these dungeons are based off of those from other worlds is plot relevant.
Also lore being given via text dumps isn't new, or ...even bad. Like, just read them? The notes from a Fool definitely has Astos' voice in them, and the others sound robotic and detached because that's what the Lufenians have become.
That complaint about the game not being a Metroidvania, interconnected world instead of split into levels was really odd and out of place as well in your review.
