Lyrics : We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels ’cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, ’there is no reason And the truth is plain to see.’ But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as well’ve been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, ’i’m home on shore leave,’ Though in truth we were at sea So i took her by the looking glass And forced her to agree Saying, ’you must be the mermaid Who took neptune for a ride.’ But she smiled at me so sadly That my anger straightway died If music be the food of love Then laughter is its queen And likewise if behind is in front Then dirt in truth is clean My mouth by then like cardboard Seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straightway quickly
The last two verses were not included in the song as released, presumably would have made it too long for radio plays. Thanks for including here - interesting.
When this tune was brand-spanking new, I attended a dance at a local hall. I asked a lovely gal to dance with me to this tune. There were broken specs of light on the dance floor from an overhead mirror ball. The rest of those in attendance stood by. The dance floor was ours - the lovely gal and me. I felt as though I was dancing on air. When this tune was over, the disc jockey said, over his PA system, "That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen - bar none." I will never forget that night - so long ago. This tune is one for the ages. Many, many thanks Procol Harum and Radio Wollaton.
They don't make 'em like this anymore -- no, they don't. This magnificent tune figures into my memoirs. I could dedicate an entire chapter of my life's story to this majestic and soulful tune. Many thanks, Radio Wollton.
A few years ago when my parents were still alive, we had gone to a restaurant for lunch, and they were playing the London Symphony Orchestra's cover of this. My mother could not believe that it was a cover of a song from 1967...she thought it was much newer.
In better days long ago out from the radio jumped this mesmerizing song the likes of which had never been heard before, or since. Still continues to cast a spell whenever played. Well done.
Great stereo on this classic. Their debut single and one of the most successful selling of all time with sales of 10 million. Love the prominent drumming on your remix. Another unique single choice. Cheers and thanks!
Cathedral Tone on Late Great Gary Brooker's Organ playing is astounding as is His singing. And of course got to give a nod to their Guitar player Robin Trower. A well crafted Composition & truly a signature sound from back in the day..
Meeting up at the episcopal cathedral on a late Fall, early Winter Sunday evening (way past dark by then, bien sur), me just 14 years old, for a "church dance" in Atlanta, Ga., after a weekend of the most incredible drug and sex "exploration" that you just would not believe (although my eyes were wide open..."), hearing this song playing, casually ("accidentally") from inside the car in the night, rolling through the strange streets, the strange world, strange city, and so HERE we are, some (almost) 57 goddamned years afterwards, and the thread of ALL that TIME reaches right back to the sound of this "song." Any questions?? LOL...Have at it, boys.

🎧 👍 "And although my eyes were open, they might just as well been closed" As embarrassing as it is, I have been there. This is one of those especially mono songs that one would have never thought would be available to hear in stereo. Thank you, Pat. There is a Trooper song called, Oh, Pretty Lady that has an opening organ that reminds me a bit of this song (well very faintly anyway). @radiowollaton8521

Thanks for the nice feedback Walter 👍👍
@@radiowollaton8521 You're most welcome! THANK YOU, for keeping all of this fantastic music alive and in stereo!
I was expecting you to say the lovely gal became my wife! 😊

This is another voice that will last forever.

It is a magical sound, I just love it.
Beautiful voice that got better with age. RIP Sir Gary Brooker ❤
This is my favorite song of the 60s ! I was 11 when it first came out in 1967 ! Love 60s music the very best but love to hear most music !
Thanks Patti. I was 11 in 1967 as well !

Matthew Fisher played the organ on this track, not Gary Brooker! See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Fisher_(musician)
The sound of the 60s, a fantastic tune very well enhanced. 👍👍
This was the best Time of melodic Hand Made Music to dream and relax ♡
One of my all time favorites ❤
Has to be one of the best songs of 67. Homburg is a great song too.
Agree on both counts - Pat has a remix of "Homburg".
This is a song of my youth and when I listen to it.I wish it could play forever. Along with Conquistador and A Salty Dog,it is haunting.
Why couldn't they release it like this?? This was done so well! 🙏
I don't understand the record companies. This remix was so easy to make!
@@radiowollaton8521 They should re-release it mixed like this.
They can’t find the 4 tracks, and even then I think there were dubs done *during* the mono mixdown, possibly.
I consider myself fortunate beyond belief that I have heard this amazing song performed live by PH.
I HOPE THIS IS ALLOWED TO BE PLAYED
IN HEAVEN , AS IT CERTENLY SOUNDS
HEAVENLY .. I'LL BE THERE SOON .
Sneak your phone and headphones in. Worked for my buddy Eric.
Thank for the remix... its much enjoyable in stereo mix.
Love it!!
Thank You!
A good remix. Thank you.
Thank you.
Excellent remix of an outstanding song, almost a time capsule! Bravo
Thanks Louis
One of my favourites, thank you very much, interesting mix 😎 👍 Love it.

Oh my..brings me back to those "hazy smoked filled black light playrooms in 67' when I took my 1st tokes of weed...oh those memories...

A Whiter Shade Of Pale
The BB Band
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels cross the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
But the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be one of the sixteen vestal virgins
Who are leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed
How do you turn gold into platinum........well, like this.
I don't want to criticize too much but ob the rigt channel seems to be an additionally organ with high chords notes included that I can't distinguish in the original mix.
That's because I layer extra sounds. Have a look at my About Page for more information.
Gotta listen again . . . and again . . . this is so, so good! Was that chord organ in the original?
