  • My last day on the wonderful River Dee Salmon Fly Fishing saw me visit the Deecastle Waters. August 2022. The beat has 5.2 kilometres (3.2 miles) of fly-fishing, with 22 named pools on the south side of the Dee. There is a bank sharing agreement with the Dinnet beat opposite that allows fishers to enjoy both banks of this fantastic stretch of river doubling the length of river available in the Spring season. The beat winds its way through wonderful farmland and woodland scenery. There are three huts on the beat with more on the Dinnet side.
    Access to the beat is by car along tracks to most of the beat which of course is something I just love and adds to my enjoyment of the experience

    Another cracking video Chris. Keep up the good work.
    Edwin Steffens has a good tip for you. As soon as the fly lands on the water the fly needs to be fishing with a taut line. The taut line will make the fly swing in the current rather than just being washed downstream with a slack line. Everyone has different ways to get rid of slack line after a less than perfect cast but I usually just strip the line back through the fingers on my top hand so that the line in the water becomes taut. At the same time it creates a nice loop of line dangling at your feet for the salmon to run with. Sometimes I also swing the tip of the rod slightly upstream after a cast to get rid of some slack. Wait until the fly has stopped working before you take your 2 steps downstream. This helps to keep the line taut and the fly swinging. If you walk downstream as the fly is swinging you lose the tension and the fly will not work properly.
    Another little tip regarding your casting is to keep hold of the rod with your right hand on the forward stroke. It's the old fly casting technique of stopping dead at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. I've noticed that sometimes you tend to let the rod "float" at the end of your forward stroke as you let it slide through your right hand. A dead stop at 10 o'clock on the forward stroke paired with a stop at 2 o'clock for the D loop to form will improve the preloading of the rod and improve the distance of your casts. Ian Gordon and Simon Gawsworth have some really good spey casting videos to watch on RUclips.
    I hope all that makes sense.
    Good luck and tight lines 🤞🎣

      Guilty as charged on the casting 🙄👍 something to work on! I did wonder about keeping the line tight. Edwins advice (and yours for that matter) highly appreciated. @est9662 Год назад +6

    nice fishing if you ask pls stop mending. If your fly just floats downstream.Salmon will just see it as rubbish like so much which is floating downstream. As soon as you have tension on your line your fly starts fishing across the stream. You can manage the pace of your fly by holding your tip upstream for slow pace or downstream for fast pace. Frödin has a good video on this. Just a friendly tip. Greez and tightlines😉

    Being a relative newbie too…I’d also recommend the line being kept tight. I’d also recommend more of a “step and cast” approach in order to cover as much water as possible. Two to three casts followed by a step or two downstream…and repeat. You’ll cover a greater amount of water that way. Logic is you’ll likely put the fly in front of more fish. The other thing is, tying to locate where fish lie without a ghillie is nothing other than really bloody hard! Good luck, tight lines (or taut lines at least), and I share your frustrations and drive to return to Scotland to catch fish!🙂

Any thoughts on the Esk? Thanks again for your advice, help and support. Chris 👍😁

    Hey there, you can certainly cast ok, try casting upstream a bit more, let the fly sink lower as it comes down river to straighten up, or use a heavier tip and fly if you wish to continue casting at that angle, mix things up a bit, up stream it and square casting and down stream casting, almost like 10am, 12pm and 1pm, You should also look into the ADAA fishing in Aberdeen and shire, that will get you loads of fishing on the lower DEE and the tidal pools as well, an ADAA ticket is only £240 a year plus a one off joining fee, very good value for money, It gets you a lot of the river don which is famous for its huge brown trout as well, the fuegh and the Dee, plus the river Ness as part of the exchange ticket program, and then there is all the trout ponds it gives you access too....tight lines.

    Hi Chris,the South Esk has a lot of different beats to choose from,I only know Pirt beat on the North Esk and have only fished a small part of it.Both river’s run into the sea in the Montrose basin so it’s not to far up the East coast.Sorry I don’t have more info on those two and it’s about 40 years since I last fished the Border Esk at Canonbie,but a good border river that needs a good water height to fish well,anyway wishing you all the best on your next visit up North.Good Salmon fishing in Cornwall Chris but they are mostly fished with bait from what I can see on the videos I have watched, cheers pal and take care.

    Ta for your reply,what Esk do you fancy ,South Finavon Castle,North Pert are good or border Esk but rod license needed. Join Ian SB at Cardrona just 5 miles below Peebles,back end on Tweed is rather expensive lower down the river and hard to find fishing not booked up till the end of the season,anyway good luck when you do manage to return to God’s country and get your FISH ,YEAH Chris, cheers pal.

    • @CornishChrisTheFish
      @CornishChrisTheFish  Год назад +1

      Thanks John, yes I feel as though my 15' Scandi is actually much more versatile than maybe others would think. I also have a 11' switch rod which is good for low water. This season I will be loading a skagit set up on to the switch to make it more versatile. I did think about getting a 13' as well but I think that would be a waste. Both rods are Shakespeare and for me are excellent rods - thanks for subscribing to my channel - Chris
