- In this brand new edition of The Mark Steyn Show, Mark talks to Lindsay Shepherd, a young Teaching Assistant at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada who became a cause célèbre across the Internet at the end of 2017, when three members of the faculty attempted to destroy her life for having the temerity to show a short Jordan Peterson public television clip to her students. Miss Shepherd pushed back, with great success, and has since become a popular speaker across North America on issues of freedom of expression.
Here Mark and Lindsay talk about the conflicts between free speech and identity politics, with some unexpected diversions along the way.

*When they end up calling you a Nazi you know you have already won the argument*
Congratulations, you played yourself!
While I agree that the term Nazi is grossly overused, is climate crisis something real, although it becomes the target of corruption, as every section that has money to offer.
Winning a random argument with a random person does nothing for your life. It merely feeds your self-esteem, and it might be not for the good reason.
@@jamescollier3 I avoid arguing about climate change just like I avoid arguing about wet water. I just don't want to get financially charged as my obligatory part in combatting wet water bc I know it leads to bancruptcy.
I love watching her stop and think about the question. What a novelty. And I love when she lets a one word answer suffice. May her rise in the public consciousness and popularity not spoil her obvious gift of sight. The SJWs who trained her will certainly regret it as she now knows their arguments better than they do. Godspeed.
Excellent!
We'd all do well to emulate her, eh?
@Johnny G Sarcasm w/o wit is nitty not nifty.
IMHO.
j/s
Define SJW's please.
Deborah Morton “Social justice warriors” speaks for itself, surely. The only thing one needs to note is that the left are proud to call themselves thus, and the right use the term as a putdown.
I love her, period.
That one single, split second decision to record that meeting has changed not only her life, but many others as well.
People talk about her looks a lot (understandably), but I'm blown away at how poised, articulate, and clear-thinking she is at such a young age. For someone not raised in entertainment/performance that's really impressive.
She has more courage and poise than most people twice her age.
Heavenly Vines Distinctive Canadian Wines yea and intelligence
heh courage isn't about age, but point taken.
Sure it does. In youth you are feeling quite invincible but with the years you get to know how fucked up the world really is. So I value the courage of old people more than those of teenagers and tweens.
KaraLoop
That's a really weird value judgement. "Value the courage of old people more than those of teenagers..."
Like... you would value Lindsay Shepherd for her courage more if she was sixty years old, on principle?
So absurd.
Don't take this as an insult to Lindsay, because I'm a big fan, but it's actually the natural state of things to have more courage and be more risk-taking at age 20 than at age 40. Those qualities plummet as you age. Which makes what Jordan Peterson did so impressive, he put everything on the line and risked losing it all in his fifties. Which is way more atypical than doing something like that at age 20, when you're still so young that the world is your oyster
This whole experience un-caged a mighty lioness for free speech!
Lindsay is a fine example of a true and free Canadian; honest, forthright and brave. My wish is that she continue to have the blessing of grace and good fortune as she continues to shine her bright light into the dark lies of the ill-liberalism which infect the campuses and main street media narrative across the continent.
If she hadn't have recorded what they said to her I shudder to think what would have happened. You can see how these Universities could drive sane thinking young people to madness!
Well spoken, powerful, intelligent, logical, beautiful woman!
Wilfed Laurier has irreveribly damaged its reputation as an institution of free thought.
user295295 irreversibly or irrevocably or maybe even irreverently if you consider free speech sacred like some of us do.
user - you wrote: "Wilfed Laurier has irreveribly damaged its reputation .." etc etc.
I believe almost all of Western Civilization has been feminized to mathematically certain extinction. The exceptions are USA and Eastern Europe. USA because we have maintained a serious military ethos for so long the rest of Western Civilization thinks it is safe. And Eastern Europe because they know what can happen and know they are not safe.
USA has ten carrier groups, each of which has more war fighting capability then the rest of the entire planet combined. The men and women of these forces are not to be trifled with.
And I very much like the fact USA has covert forces all across the planet. Why? Live fire exercises. And that's all they amount to. God help anyone who seriously pisses us off.
Is it still getting funded? Pity
Not "irreverently" - irrelevant is the correction.
NO. Universities in general have been taken over by Marxists, thus universities are generally very damaged already.
I love how serene, collected, and poised she is. Great posture and never interrupts.
I forget Mark Steyn is so intelligent and a gentleman. He draws things out of Lindsay in a way that is guidance and at the same time lets her strengthen her own position.
There's an awkwardness to this interview, probably because Lindsay knows Mark would answer the questions better himself.
Lovely the way she doesn't let Mark Steyn dress her up as a young conservative. Very much her own person.
She gets more articulate, better informed, more confident -- and more dangerous! -- with every interview . . .
Strong, beautiful woman!
Don't let the basteds grind you down, Lindsay --- they messed with the wrong woman; and thank you for giving this old curmudgeon hope!
what does her gender and appearance have to do with it? Stop simping
@@deaconfrost5935 , crawl back under your rug..
Lindsay, You Rock! Freedom! Free Speech! Freedom!
What, no comments? When we're talking free speech? Well, allow me to be the first: these two are both modern-day heroes, and I love them both dearly. Thanks.
It is hard not to respect and like Lindsay.
I’m happy that things are going well for her after all the drama she was subjected to. She is getting a master class in life and postmodernism. She will be stronger going forward.
ChristianBolt that’s exactly right.
"a masterclass in ... postmodernism"? Not sure you know what you're talking about? :)
Maybe he meant "a masterclass ABOUT life and postmodernism"
Getting a master class in life and postmodernism - I wouldn't call it "going well".
Gay guy here....mad crush on this woman! Stunning to look at and so damn interesting to listen to. I love her approach to answering questions; Beautiful Person. May I raise a daughter half as poised and elegant as she is!
yawn
NO.

She’s so beautiful and well spoken, what a treasure!
Stunning person, we need more people like Lindsay....
Good thoughtful interview. Thank you Mark and Lindsay.
yes, agree. The selective visual editing, at the end, was a wee bit campy, though.
She has never been the sort who appeared to like to hear herself talk. She always seems to be absorbing as much as she's trying to put out there. I think there is wisdom in spending a lot of time listening and only speaking about what you've spent a good deal of time thinking about, particularly when you have cameras on you. I would very much like to have a casual conversation about philosophy with her. She seems like an interesting mind, though very subdued.
faultroy
You seem to be the only one that felt that way from what I see of the comments. So it would appear your opinion is in the minority. You're most likely the one with the problem.
This young lady is getting more poised and well spoken here than in the other vids I have seen her in. Great! She has been greatly praised by Dr. Peterson, and thats all I need to hear to support her. Although I already did, mind, due to the whole thing from the first day this was on the net. So Mark, pls keep in touch with her and get her back on your channel from time to time.
I am 66 and l know absolutely that free speech is dangerously close to disappearing in the UK..
Once you associate a person's character, honesty, personality and standing in the community
with their political viewpoint you tend to shut up.
Yes she is exceptionally pretty, gentle, matured and courageous and most importantly, she is very intelligent. Just love her.
So she is intelligent, savvy, and beautiful? Something tells me she is going to find a rewarding career no matter what happens with the University.
Her comments are a heinous affront to Gaia and Communism as well as being intolerant hate speech. She has earned a speedy show trial and a predetermined "guilty" sentence, followed by a first-class boxcar ride to the nearest Gulag.
I would just like to emphasize the korrekt sequence of events through which social justice is achieved.
1. Executed
2. Found guilty
3. Given a fair trial.
Too often this sequence is being reversed, which is the opposite of social justice. Without hesitation, we must denounce such occurrences as fascist, racist, and sexist.
SigRho1429 , give her 10 years. She'll age well, in every way.
SigRho1429
And no matter what ideology...
Guilty until proven innocent isn't enough. Only when blasphemers are gulity despite being proven innocent will we reach utopia comrades!
+ arseman arse, i sense you are strong in the Sarcasm. I can feel the Sarcasm flow through you. You have done well.
Lindsay mentions she has an obsession with countering her own thoughts and I think this is the sort of thing that sets people apart intellectually. People need to develop this skill. Also, "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." (Aristotle)...
nice, thanks for the quote.
that notion of hers you refer to clicked with me, too. the hegelian dialectic internal..
yep, never table an idea if you can't argue the opposite position.
I think that's why so many people in his time hated Socrates. Most people aren't prepared to challenge their own views, they just want to cozy steadily along in life.
Mark you're a gentleman and a scholar.
Lindsay is fantastic! I love her knowing smile! Thanks Mark!
Lindsay seems smarter or perhaps more succinct than she first appeared a few months ago. I think this whole experience has really started to shape her.
Same thing with James Damore.
She is the sort who would get smarter, because she believes in free speech and open inquiry. In the original recording of her getting attacked by the professors she already made more sense than any of them. It went on for some time and she made clear arguments for her position, and all they could come up with is nonsense, buzz words, and insults.
Red pills have that effect. It allowed her to think about all the questions she always had but didn’t allow herself to ask.
It seems like when her story broke out she was bewildered, and felt betrayed by her fellow liberals, thus not knowing how to describe it. Something many of us went through over the last decade.
Yeah both individuals mentioned above are completely red pilled now
She has self-assurance without being arrogant. And she absolutely defies any kind of groupthink, while being well-informed and thoughtful. We need more people in public life like her.
Don’t you just love it when a girl is smart, beautiful, and classy?
What a awesome interview 👍🇵🇱🇦🇺
I find her to be the most gorgeous woman for so many reasons... confident, intelligent, open-minded, and physically gorgeous. A true unicorn.
It’s nice to see young, sensible, thoughtful communicators in action. Hope for the future.
Very dignified conversation. Glad to see she has her head on right, even if she had to go through a mild brand of bullshit to get there.
She went from dating an Iranian to dating a member of the alt-right. Jury must still be out on if she has her head on right.
+The Reaction: I'd say that the jury is still out if YOU have your head on straight, but whatever. Seriously, after all that the maniacal hard left put her through, did u expect her to date anyone OTHER than an alt-right member? think about it logically.
That is the only way to get there.☺
Is that’s true or hyperbole?
Thank you Mark Stein , always calm and well informed, a much needed voice in this idiotic nightmare we are being forced to live through, very much appreciated.
Soooooooooo glad she taped it.
She and Dr. Peterson make me so proud to be Canadian.
It's cool to see how Lindsay is blossoming more and more through each interview.
You two good people! Thank God you exist!
Hats off to Mark for his gentle treatment of this girl as she slowly transitions. It was like he had rescued a feral cat and was careful not to make any sudden moves or loud exclamations, very unlike his normal, boistrous persona. She's taking her time swallowing the red pill and Mark was wise not to make her choke on it half-way down. I hope his reward will be a nice mention on the acknowledgment page of her inevitable first-person account: "My Jouney from SJW to Common Sense." Thanks, Mr Steyn!
It's gorgeous how poised & intelligent she is. Damn.
Great interview. What a pathetic state of affairs in Canada.
Wow! An admirable beautiful brght and brave young woman who exposed her tormentors to the world. Lindsay Shepherd's human rights were seriously violated but the guilty players were never called to account. Inspirational, how a young noble spirit refused to be crushed.
Excellent interview. Thank you.
Linsday Shepherd is a concise, well spoken, and thoughtful speaker. It's a treat just to hear her discuss a topic because of how precise she is in her speech. She isn't overly cautious as much as she is reasoned and careful with her words. Bravo Lindsay, you have a long career ahead of you in public discourse.
how Canadian this discussion is, and how Excellent too!
I know I live in Canada
Great interview. Amazing woman being interviewed by an amazing orator.
Engaging interview. Thank you to both.
You're an exceptional interviewer, Mark. Lindsay said that her major is communications, she's obviously an introvert, so it's impressive that she's embracing her fears. She's so nervous here: look at her body language! The more exposure like this, the better you'll get at it... well done, Lindsay, we're rooting for you!
One of the few people Universities haven't managed to indoctrinate, Lindsay had her eyes opened pretty quickly!
..many of us just up and left.. went to college instead.. started actual careers/professions/etc.. marks were nver an issue for me.. I went on full scholarship as a woman to Ottawa U for political science/sociology.. one semester was all it took for me to see what was going on.. second semester it got real.. 2nd year I got out. I sometimes think I should have found a way to stay.. to actually make a change.. but this was 15 years ago.. it didnt seem so obvious/necessary then.. and your only real option was to become what they were ..thereby defeating the purpose.. needless to say.. thank goodness for people like Lindsey. We need them now more than ever.
@@troytodd7253 Well done Troy you saw it early and didn't want a part in it. (Good Choice!) Look at how strongly this movement has been pushed already in 15 years, what to think of the next 15 years? Surely soon people with say ENOUGH and when they do it won't be pretty!
What I love about the internet. ...stimulating conversation; this is why men in great numbers are drifting away from traditional media. Regular tv channels seem utterly constrained and set in a rigid and narrow and pre - thought - out opinions. Thanks Lindsay and thanks Mark for provoking thought in me and thanks too for your smiles and sense of humour and really.... your humanity in the face of encroaching totalitarianism.
Good on her.
I completely agree with Steyn that Lindsay Shepherd is a hero in every sense. We need more Lindsay Shepherds to assert, but until the eruption begins we need to acknowledge her contribution, stand with her on issues, and defend her right, and everyone's right to free speech, free expression, the right to speak our minds even when, and especially when, it may offend someone. Echo chambers produce only repetition, nothing new emerges. Thank you Lindsay for sticking up for yourself and, in a larger way than you've yet realized, advocating for free people everywhere.
Her strength is really impressing me more and more as this all unfolds.
Hope some day she will be the prime minister of Canada. Canada and the world needs her and the likes of her. Godspeed.
She's by nature shy. Slight, dainty frame. Lovely as can be. Add this with her observational thoughtfulness and it's absolutely disarming as hell. That's powerful fellas.
Indeed. I'm a puddle.
Wow y’all are creepy
A very thoughtful, and measured interview by Lindsay Shepherd!
Intelligent, gorgeous, well spoken, and a great mix between eloquence and shyness.
And that lipstick, GOOD GOD!
Mark Steyn is correct that Canada needs more heroes and heroines who will stand up for their convictions and not be oppressed into silence. Good interview. It's so refreshing to listen to an interview where each person thoughtfully listens to the other person and each make intelligent replies in return. People are very tired of political correctness and identity politics. It's enjoyable to discuss issues without worrying about someone running to their safe space.
Goddess. She is such an incredibly beautiful, intelligent, charming woman.
Lindsay is quite clear, courageous, and a balanced critical thinker. Her observations about gender and her own beauty privilege are right on. Very smart person. Worth watching her career into the future.
Ms Shepherd is an extremely powerful person. I can imagine that when she was a seven year old her mom and dad had quite a challenge on their hands. Lindsay took an inquisition and turned it back on her inquisitors. WHOA!
I like that she is very intellectually honest. She thinks about each question and answers it honestly and is perfectly willing to entertain all valid arguments.
This 45 year old white dad is a proud supporter of Lindsay Shepherd
Lindsay seems very elegant & well-spoken. I hope she continues to be a spokesman for Free Speech.
What everyone saw was how brave Lindsay is. Very, very clever and very reasonable, but most of all very brave to stand against the whole university at her age. It really highlights - what use is being clever if you are not brave?
OMG love her speech with beautiful and apt gestures to go with it.
She has good posture. She didn't lean back in that chair at all during the entire interview.
she could relax a little, but this speaks to her personality, it shows she is very proper, metered, and is very cautious but knows what she believes, and she knows when she smells BS, she cant be bullied as soft spoken as she is
Rule #1; Stand up straight with your shoulders back.
Finally, something the fake news won't tackle
rule number one baby!
Bill Luka damn. Even the comments are so british.
What a treat to listen to two intelligent Canadians even though separated by several decades in age!
Terrific!!! I love real discussions!!!
Mark Steyn - thank you and God bless you. You are excellent - so logical and rational. How refreshing. Love your humor, too.
Lindsay is brave smart and can hold her own.. she is not deterred by what has been brought against her (in fact she has thrived under the pressure) and she really gives me hope for a future in which she will take part in.. I might be a conservative but i really do enjoy her classic liberal viewpoint..
This is a great video, and I have nothing but giant respect for Lindsay and Mark, standing for free, Free, FREE speech is something that must continue or we become slaves.
She's GORGEOUS! And A hero!😍
I am very proud of Lindsay and I am excited to see the intellectual contributions she will make as her journey progresses.
Really impressive what an independent thinker she is.
Very glad to have come across this interview. Hope it's widely viewed. The abhorrent left-wing anti-free-speech tactics need maximum exposure. Lindsey is very courageous and deserves high praise for standing up for common sense for the common good.
Great job Mark! Interesting to hear her account of total submersion indoctrination on campus, and how shocking her violation of it all was to her.
Lindsay is generating fresh thoughts and innovative views...She is a rising star in the politics of freedom and individual rights...We are lucky to have her spearheading the future of of freedom in our society...God speed
Fresh thoughts? Like what?
She's honestly beautiful! Great interview, it's nice to hear how she showed it to her class, they'd never heard of anything outside of their bubble before
Lindsay has a bright future as a result of going through all this! This has really made her stronger and wiser! She's Beautiful too!
Thanks for a good discussion. I was most impressed by the idea that when identity politics is everything, then everything becomes ad hominem.
Brilliant!! Well done Lindsay Shepard and Mark Steyn!!
The host has such a velvety relaxing voice to me
Mark, fantastic interview. I really enjoyed it. And I had a good chuckle at this part! 51:11
What a rollercoaster ride of emotions. "Your boyfriend is..." "My ex-boyfriend" (my reaction: :O omg she's single now). Afterwards: "My current boyfriend is on the far right" (my reaction; GODDAMNIT)
This comment made me laugh more than I have in a while.
At what time does she says that? Just curiosity.
Like you know about his or her chances
Her habit of constantly questioning herself is SO tremendously attractive and such a rare thing to find in a person.
The basis of those proposing the illegitimacy of individual rights is Section 15 (2) of the Charter of Rights:
15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.
(2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.
The pertinent phrase supporting the denial of the exercise of rights is: "does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups". This means that whatever the rights granted by the Charter, they can be denied by "any law, program or activity" based on what the government or human rights councils decide is a "disadvantage".
Thus, the repudiation of free speech is perfectly logical and necessary "to ameliorate the conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups".
This section was written by the feminist advisors to those who produced the Charter. It was included to support, as a supreme law, the concept of affirmative action. That is, the power to discriminate against any person or group in favour of any other person or group they deemed "disadvantaged".
I opposed this section when it was first drafted, arguing that it was a totalitarian device that would lead to the overthrow of individual rights, the crushing of free speech, and the persecution of innocents.
I emigrated to the US a few years after the Charter was imposed precisely because I saw my fears being realised. That was 26 years ago. People who argue that the current problem is a new phenomenon have not been paying attention.
Peter Kolding Willfully blind!
Great talk, Mark is the man! Lindsay is so comfortable more so then in any other video i have seen. Lovely woman having a conversation with an intelligent man.
21:33 I am a former participant in debate society, and I can confidently tell you: That kind of nonsense has been par for the course for about 25 years.
I am a woman who fully supports free speech and have always stood up for this. We all need to stand up for truth.
Started a bit tense understandable in these odd times. Excellent interview, thank you both.
It is so refreshing to watch a "real" interview. This is a strong young woman. No one will brow beat or shame her into her beliefs. She carefully considers her views in life based on facts and impressions as they unfold.
‘I’m quite comfortable with my new right wing friends’ !!!! Somebody create a meme out of that one please!!!
Haha...I missed that but just found it at 18:50 for anyone else looking for it.
She is educating Mark on identity politics in real time . Fascinating !
I’m impressed with her posture.
I like women who look proper and who speak properly and thoughtfully. Good interview.
Very nice interview.
