I live in the Netherlands and it is very bad here as well. The soccer club my grandchildren were playing soccer forbid the parents to communicate with their children, coach and referees during the game. If they do they get removed from the club and are not allowed to come during games anymore. Now it is calm and peaceful and everyone is enjoying the game. The kids are less stressed as well.

My brother donated his time for 17 years to girls softball. He told me that he stopped doing it last year because of the parents. I didn't ask him to elaborate on it but, after seeing this video. I wish I would have asked him why he stopped doing something he enjoyed.
This video really backfired on whoever was recording it. It's quite obvious that their intention was to "call this umpire out" and shame him on social media. Their video ended up going viral for the wrong intended reason, as it showcased to the entire world what a bunch of assholes they are.

The ump just bullied all the kids out of their baseball game because some parent called him short. The kids didn't do anything wrong, yet, the ump is punishing all of them because something someone else said.

I've been coaching youth sports for 30 years and the best advice I ever got early on was from another coach who told me to have a team meeting before the season started. The parents/ guardian were required to attend. And at that time you made it clear (in a professional, polite, but clear way) that the players would only take instructions from the coach, and the parents were not to interfere during a practice or game. If they had something to share they could share it with the coach before or after the game but not during and not in front of the kids. AND to leave the refs alone. In 30 years I've only had to have two parents removed from the court and I credit this to the advice I received early on. I've seen plenty of other teams where the parents have zero filter and can't control themselves and make things a nightmare for the coach and the kids. You think people would have common sense that they don't.

I worked nearly 30 years as an umpire (rec, high school and college). When I had these rare situations, I would inform the hosting coach (or administrator of a neutral site) about the concern when it first manifested itself. I would tell them that the potential continued disruption would have to be handled by them. When it got to the disruptive point, I would inform THEM (without ever going to or confronting the source of the problem) that the game will not continue until the guilty party(ies) is/are removed from the sight and sound premises. The handful of times I had to do this, it worked quite well.
As a teacher myself, it amazes me how irrational and disrespectful parents can become when it comes to their children. It’s like they lose all reason…..
Mocking someone’s height or any other physical characteristics, which one has no control over, is the lowest form of douche bag behavior. That parent should be publicly shamed in front of her kids and all others to see.
I chaperoned our high school's basketball team on an away game several years ago. The home team's parents and fans were rude and disrespectful to our players the entire game and taunted them with catcalls and orchestrated chants. After our team scrambled back from a four-point deficit to win in the final seconds of the game, the opposing team's fans started pouring out of the stands and screaming at the officials (and even some of our players) for calling the foul that had allowed our win. We hustled our kids back to the locker room without even waiting for the customary handshake lineup because things were getting so heated. Several of the coaches and I literally had to stand in front of a wall of angry parents shouting threats in the hallway while our boys got dressed in the locker room behind us. I took my phone out and began recording them. After reviewing the footage from the end of the game and the locker room hallway, the department of education's athletic board suspended the school from the conference for the rest season. It's amazing how grown adults can completely lose their minds over kids playing a freaking GAME.
I used to Referee football. I had the same things happen. The umpire should have first got both coaches together and make it clear to them if they don't get their parents under control they will be ejected. This puts the pressure on the coach to handle it. This worked great for me
This is not new, it just that you are paying more attention to it thanks to the internet and video phones being everywhere. Same with all cop BS, ask black community if that stuff is new or has been going on for last 100++ years. It just whites are now seeing it more thanks to the net. Kinda like in 1960s TV brought the horrid treatment that South was doing to blacks, when white in North saw Police dogs and hoses attacking blacks for just wanting to vote it brought it to public's attention. Same with Viet Nam War, hard to make war look cool when TV news is showing the horrors and not some propaganda film playing before a feature film at Movies like in WW2. Hence why we had large protests about Nam. And also why during Gulf War/Iraq War restrictions where placed on TV crews.
You know the worst part about this? These parents actually think they're doing the right thing and sticking up for their kids. They have no idea how childish and irresponsible they are.
One solution for this problem. No kid can play in a league unless one of his parents serves as an umpire in a minimum of three full games. If the parents don't suit up, neither does the kid. The quality of officiating would plummet for a couple of seasons, and the parent-umpires would get a sense of what it was like to have every instant decision scrutinized and criticized by people with absolutely no accountability. And, of course, the games themselves would be a fiasco. Eventually saner heads would prevail.
Good for him. And listen to them gaslight him for getting upset. “You’re out of control. What a jerk. Stay professional for the kids”. As if they’re setting a good example. I’ve been a ref for kids basketball, and it was by far the worst job I’ve ever had. It’s normalized for coaches and parents to openly treat you like garbage.
The guy volunteered. I’m glad he walked away. I’m disgusted at parent behavior. They are raising kids. It’s gross. It’s so gross. I wonder why who they are raising are not such good people.
I had to check a bunch of parents at a kid's flag football game recently because they were making fun of a 9 year old. I asked them does that make them feel better about themselves to shit talk a fucking 9 year old. One dad actually wanted to fight me until he stood up and realized I was at least 8 inches taller and a hell of a lot bigger. These entitled parents are out of control, and they absolutely have to be confronted on their behavior.
You will know the ones who are responsible for this. They will be the ones whining that people need to "suck it up and just do your job" while they scream at you over a donut.
I was umpiring a little league game and had a dad show me a gun in his waistband. Had to call police. On the other hand, I was coaching little league and had an umpire who was talking on his cell phone during the game. Had to loudly remind him of what he was being paid for. Bottom line, sportsmanship should be paramount to the coaches, players, umpires/ referees and parents. If your kid ain't playing for his next contract, you need to settle down.
I remember back in the 90's when the national news channels reported that one little league group banned all parents from all games for an entire season. It was because of the immaturity and physical fighting of the parents.
@stopthecrazyguy did I say it didn't? Or did all I say is that Newport is literally full of these kinds of people? Sounds like you got a little defensive there princess
Absolutely disgusting for that woman to say that to that ump. I wonder if she would be as brave to say that if she didn’t have an audience. Put your Starbucks down and enjoy the game, you spoiled it for a lot of people.
Imagine what parents like this will do to their kids schools too….when they get to decide what’s taught, how it’s taught, and what words teachers can use or not. We will have a generation of know nothing children who think they are the center of the universe.
My buddy used to be an ump and had an adult parent running his mouth constantly. He told the guy (respectfully) that he needed to calm down as it's a kids game after all. The man continued his bad behavior and my friend told him he was tossing him out of the stands. Well, Mr big mouth stood up and said "Oh yeah, how are you going to make me leave". To this, my friend stated: "I'm the umpire. I officiate the game. I will forfeit your sons team right now if you don't leave". That was enough for EVERY parent in the stands to tell the jerk to leave.
I quit umpiring a few years ago. The kids were great. The coaches were ok most of the time, but the parents were horrendous. I had a situation very similar to this and I did the exact same thing. I walked off of the field and never went back. Went home and put my umpiring gear up for sale on Craigslist.
Imagine the uproar from those "Karen-parents" if the ump had responded to the height insult with a weight insult toward one of the mother-Karens lol Hats off to the ump for walking off without stooping to their level.
These guys maybe make 20-30$ for their time. They love the game. You’re kid is not babe Ruth. He’s not going to play professionally. It’s a time to learn sportsmanship. This parental behavior is pathetic. This is not sports. Guaranteed those parents did not play when they were younger.
This is what you get when a bunch of underachievers are attempting to attain success through their kids accomplishments. Sports is precisely a great way for kids to learn discipline and the greatest lessons of all, how to behave as a true winner in defeat and show sportsmanship. These parents are ruining it all. I still remember to this day, how humiliating for me, was the behavior of my own father. It's a game! Let the kids have fun !
Good for the Umpire...parents need to stay quiet and let the umpires and sports professionals do their job...too many Kens and karens thinking they KNOW EVERYTHING!!
Parents can be bad. I remember at 8yrs old I was having a bad game on the pitcher's mound. I kept throwing balls. I walked two batters. Next thing I knew, parents were booing at me. I felt like crap and asked to come out. Coach took me out. That moment will always stand out for me, and I'm in my 40's now. Lol
I pitched in little league for years - I absolutely lived for baseball. I had better games than others of course, but thankfully I never had the slightest hint of the experience you had. Jeff, I'm sorry you had to endure that. Booing an 8-year-old?!?! "Despicable" doesn't cover it, but I'll leave it at that before I start swearing.
So much for teaching your kids good sportsmanship. These kids unfortunately will most likely grow up to be as bad as their parents. The cycle continues. Just like with alot of things.
Agreed. We have a desperate shortage of referees & umpires here in the Central FL area, and some of the most rude and condescending parents anywhere in the country! Incidents have turned physical, and even shootings have occurred in event parking lots… It’s really despicable seeing this happening to youth sports.
Poor dude. I can't stand these kinds of parents. It's why my boys stopped playing football in middle school. The parents were animals and thought they could yell at and bully any kid they wanted. A woman tried pulling my kid aside once to tell him off. Saying he wasn't violent enough, that this game is violence. Needles to say I got thrown out after running into her in the ladies room. She'll understand the difference between a game a violence forever. And no I don't condone violence. But ain't nobody going to have my son pushed up against a wall, sticking they finger into his chest over a game. It was freaking middle school not the NFL. Eff those people. Sadly their kids will have ruined games and probably grow up to be just like them.
I was an umpire for little league games for 2 years. This was in the 80's and most parents were civil. These parents are the definition of aholes. If they would have been talking like that to me, I would have thrown them out of the park, letting them know the game would not continue until they were gone. If they fail to leave, you find their kid and eject them from the game. If they still don't leave, you make their team forfeit. Game over.
Entitled parents, if you're so right, why don't you do the job for them? This isn't even "adult behavior." This is childish behavior enacted by adults.
And the parents still didn’t learn any lesson. They think they can just be awful and mean to the umpire and then when they don’t take it anymore, the UMPIRE is the jerk. Just went straight over their heads. Not even a thought of, oh maybe we were a bit harsh? Nope. Entitled and awful.
The person who should have stepped up to control the parent is the COACH. Several years ago, I was at a youth basketball game when one parent began to berate the referee. The COACH stopped the game and told the parent to shut up or leave and take his kid with him. Everyone cheered. I learned later that the parent filed a complaint against the coach for being verbally abusive.
Happened to a young teenager volunteer referee at my kids soccer. Parents were yelling mean comments at him to the point he started crying and walked off the field. These were adults who's own kids were on the same field.
Exact same thing happened to a friend of mine umping a baseball game. He left in tears. His parents had to come pick him up early because he wasn't even old enough to drive yet.

Hats off to the ump for walking off without stooping to their level.
These guys maybe make 20-30$ for their time. They love the game. You’re kid is not babe Ruth. He’s not going to play professionally. It’s a time to learn sportsmanship. This parental behavior is pathetic. This is not sports. Guaranteed those parents did not play when they were younger.
How about these parents try being an umpire and putting up with kind of crap
Yep. They wouldn't last 10 minutes. Much like the way parents challenge the abilities of teachers.
It's hard to be an on field official. People only see their kids but refuse to see the official as a kid or being a league official.
That umpire probably is doing that because he loves the game. It's most definitely not for the money.
Of course it was Newport Beach, Cali. Some of the most entitled and spoiled people on the planet
Parents are TERRIBLE at little league games. 🙄
how are you going to teach your children to have good behavior if you as the parent don't exhibit it?
So much for teaching your kids good sportsmanship. These kids unfortunately will most likely grow up to be as bad as their parents. The cycle continues. Just like with alot of things.
Most American sports parents think their kid is going pro. Sorry Karen...they aren't
Agreed. We have a desperate shortage of referees & umpires here in the Central FL area, and some of the most rude and condescending parents anywhere in the country! Incidents have turned physical, and even shootings have occurred in event parking lots…
It’s really despicable seeing this happening to youth sports.
I'd have left too. These idiots ruin their kids game and their minds as well.
Hear, hear! 👍
"Gonna keep yapping? Your team forfeits, have a nice day."
Game over.
Was thinking he should award the game to the other team.
People wonder why there is an officials shortage in this nation.. Parents ruin youth sports .
Entitled parents, if you're so right, why don't you do the job for them?
This isn't even "adult behavior." This is childish behavior enacted by adults.
Parents are the issue here, sad when they act like a little kid!!!!
I had an ump go home during the middle of a game exactly like this. Little league. 20 years ago. Never changes.
They were the bullies in high school, and they’re still bullies later in life
Ugly on inside and outside.
