Gets teleported against their will, dumped outside, no home, no money, no way to make money since you don't know the language, and killed for something you "might" do.
I saw the series until the end, but I can see why so many people dropped it after that scene.

Yep. I know for me personally, I like seeing the underdog win. Not get further dumped on for the evil couple to go on having a happy ending.
I was actually cheering for pandemonium. That world and those people are pure evil.
Yeah the priestess admits she’s the bad guy but I’m like, “well stop resisting and let your scum bag world come to an end or at least stop the people who keeps isekai-ing innocent children.
I would like a season 2 because I want pandemonium to go full Overlord on their evil world.
That’s why I watch anime. I like to see some retribution.

Yea this scene got under my skin for the exact reasons you mentioned. And then she goes on saying I’m pure and just. I stayed around for another episode and the show had the nerve to be cutesy and buddy buddy. Nah, fuck that. Plus there was no consequences for her actions, no remorse. Dude was forgotten. He didn’t deserve any of that. She deserves to be punished. I can’t side with a character like that, plus she’s not charismatic or cool. The only good thing that came out of me watching this show was that it inspired my own story

I’ve seen way too many gamers wield power as a toy. I myself have done the same, torture npcs over trivial dialogue, eventually desensitizing into a psychotic sociopath. You can say it’s just a game, but it implies the possibility of what you would do given power.

The guy gets abducted from his home to a strange place, now he's homeless with no money and can't even speak the language. Then he finds out he gets the kind of power that every boy has dreamed of in the younger days but before he can get a good taste of it, he's murdered in cold blood for being a potential threat. It just feels wrong on so many levels.

I remember being turned away from the show by this scene, not because 'muh self-insert' died, but because I had been reading some particularly good fanfiction that had a lot of the problems in-story be caused by a lack of empathy and some people making 'hard choices' that didn't really need to be made. Things got better when empathy and just genuine good human-nature started to affect the world (skipping a shitton of stuff) and it was a good fanfic, but, as a result, I was in a particularly empathetic mindset at the time and when the guy just got ganked, I was really annoyed at Menou.
I put myself in that guy's shoes. I get ripped from home to some isekai adventure against my will and when I discover my 'uber OP power' that could possibly get me home if I use it creatively (because I can certainly imagine some way to get home with that ability), I get instantly killed by some moralizer who gives some bullshit lines about how 'she's the bad guy' and how I 'didn't do anything to deserve this' as if it made up for the fact she killed me. I didn't (and still don't) care about the fake-MC as a character, but the moralizing after murdering an innocent was what instantly made it go from 'this has irritated me' to 'this has made me genuinely kinda angry at a show and I don't like feeling this way', so I left.
I like Yuri a lot and genuinely enjoy reading/watching Yuri stuff, it's always a good time, but I really hate the sanctimonious bullshit she said and that plus my mindset at the time made me stop watching. I had completely forgotten about it until this popped up in my feed.

You see, that's the problem. You refused to watch the rest and never got to the part where they literally explain how otherworlder's souls errode the more they use their powers, slowly erasing their memories until they go insane.
This has happened 4 times already and each time a calamity almost destroyed the entire world. You're sad over one innocent kid, when that same kid was a walking talking ticking black hole waiting to blow a crater into the planet.
Menou literally watched her entire town be turned into salt by a panicked other worlder. They are dangerous before and after death. She calls herself the bad guy because she is, she was trained to kill, to not think of herself as righteous, that she was the villain. Maybe watch the anime before making judgements.

He got murdered blah blah blah. The entire point of Menou's character is meant to be that she's morally grey, doing bad things for an ostensible "greater good". The stuff with Akari is meant to be her wavering in that aspect once she isn't able to instantly finish the job and has to interact with her.
This scene was supposed to signal to you that you're watching an isekai with an actual unique premise and an interesting morally dubious protagonist. Anime fans seem okay with that kind of thing when it's a dude doing it.

The fact that people latched onto this character in just a couple of minutes means he was that interesting. If the other characters were more interesting there would be no one complaining. This is the same premise as Talentless Nana and no one was complaining about Nana killing off innocent people. From what I understand, there are 3 sides in this community:
Actual no-lifers who got mad that their power fantasy kid was destroyed
Other no-lifers making fun of them instead of explaining what makes the scene good
The smarter ones who actually went out of their way to explain why they like/dropped this show. (Like because it subverted expectations in a sensical manner because the otherworlders become killers as their powers corrupt them so it makes sense on why the kid had to die, disliked and dropped because the show didn't show this fact well at first and baited them that this would be a more standard isekai before just killing the kid outta nowhere aka the show suddenly feeling like it switched plots without explaining it much in-universe and having to rely on promotional material to do so)

Looking back I can see why some people didn't like this too well. It's just an odd feeling knowing that the protagonist of the series is a murderer who can and will continue to kill innocents.
I'm not sure about what the novel has left off, but it's reasonable to not want to continue while being aware that the protagonist's entire purpose is to be a murderer of innocents, even with the whole 'theyre dangerous' plot point.

      @@anirudhsukigakirei9397
I find the "what if the mc was male" arguments to be so silly when you compare the first impressions and impacts of both sides.
Unfortunately those 2 comparisons don't work how you'd like them to.
Menou is evil, she admits she's evil herself, certainly. But there is a fine difference between her and the other two.
Redo of Healer is a revenge story, Menou is not out for revenge. Menou is murdering individuals before they can use their abilities to cause harm. Incidentally, when she made Mitsuki use his ability, she basically corrupted him too. The more they use their abilities, the more corrupted they become.
Tanya was established as a horrible person within the first few minutes. Though, it's still enjoyable since you knew what you were getting into the moment you turned the show on.
The Executioner and Her Way of Life purposely did a fakeout (though people criticize others for even thinking that Mitsuki is the protagonist), showed the misfortunes of the character, and then struck him with an even worse misfortune by being killed by the person that he trusted the most at the time.
Tanya was an enjoyable evil. Keyaru is out for revenge, and for most, it's satisfying, especially when you see what they've put him through in the past.
Menou has been through bad things, but witnessing and feeling the impact of those bad things is enough to turn people away, which it did. When even the author of the novel said that he felt extremely guilty for what he did while writing that character and the scene, it's expected that many people turn away from it.
Spoilers: It's even worse when volumes later, Menou loses the resolve to kill Akari, who has an ability that has caused the release of one of the great human errors, resulting in even more deaths.
She expresses her guilt for killing so many innocent people, expresses how they've haunted her, and how she's wanted to take her own life as an act of redemption. Of course, she loses some of these feelings after sharing her memories/feelings with Akari.
It's just unsatisfying to think that it took the murdering of so many innocent teens, forcefully pulled into another world, for Menou to then decide that she wants to start trying to help Otherworlders.
To give her the benefit of the doubt, in Volume 5 it's revealed that Menou isn't even an actual person, but instead a body of Ivory's memories that she created to accompany Akari on her journey, so she most likely didn't even have much of a say in her future as an Executioner. This is just my theory though, until Volume 6 comes out.
With all of this in mind-you'd know none of this as someone only watching the first few episodes before dropping the story. It's fairly reasonable for someone to lose interest after witnessing the murder that happened and finding out the truth that he was an innocent pawn sent out to die.
Hell, even when Mitsuki's Null ability is used again in the future, it's openly said that it isn't even a threat singlehandedly capable of beating Menou in a fight (while being used by someone else).
Tl;dr - Tanya and Keyaru have a satisfying appeal to them that is established quickly in the first few minutes of their episode. Tanya's psychotic atheist child-dictatorship is interesting to the people who are looking for it. Rarely does she actually go out of her way to murder civilians or something of the sorts-she commits war crimes against her enemies. Keyaru is a victim of kidnapping, rape, and dozens of other heinous acts and wants to get revenge against the people who wronged him.
From the eyes of anyone watching the first episode, Menou is a deceiver who murders teenagers forced into a situation that she allowed herself to be inserted into. If we didn't get so much insight into Mitsuki's situation, there'd have probably been less people who dropped the story that quickly, honestly. If the first episode didn't have Mitsuki and only Akari, there'd have definitely been a lot of people who stayed and watched it. Like how Overlord only got into the grim murdering and betrayal in it's 2nd and 3rd Seasons.

Of course, there's always a chance they could have made him aware that the pure concept would take him over and remove his memories of japan slowly till his personality becomes basic likes, dislikes, and the pure concept. The ability to entirely destroy things like that is something that as a human disaster, would be nearly impossible to fend off, what could you do against a being that removes your body from existence? If he got entirely consumed by his ability, could he even be trapped?
I get a lot of people would be upset about the death, as he was made to be the kind of MC that the audience can connect to- but the shock factor is what kept me there, as I found it so cool to see an Isekai world that deals with other worlders, and have seen how these OP abilities they get could destroy their world, so they take them out- taking the role of villains who murder innocents who have not done anything yet to avoid the inevitable.

And no I don't think if someone, after being treated horribly by a community says some horrible shit, deserves to die before having another thought. Especially if I know they are not actually talking out of malice.
My point is only that "someone who emotionally manipulates someone to trust them and kill them in their most vulnerable state without elaborating on said character for more than a single fckin' episode can't be taken as a protagonist by ME".
ALSO it also gives me some early aot vibes like "my books are becoming boring, well i'll just kill of a few characters"
Also also, i would've forgiven it if his death had any meaning behind it. Like any other character was even affected by his death. Believe me if I say I would've liked this anime a little bit better if I started watching it from epi2.

The power of the summoned ones eventually make them monsters no matter what because eat their souls so they have to kill them before they destroy the world.
Why are they summoned then? Naturally the world for some reason summoned this kids and gives them this powers, but some magic aristocrats also summon them so they can fight against church, church is the responsible to kill the summoned ones and avoid world destruction just like it almost happen a centuries ago.
So the girl is just killing all summoned ones?

      2. Faust is actually good guy, they were trained by Ivory hero 1000 yrs ago. Back then 4 kids were summoned to help this planet to the point they achieve space travel, but after a while their power started to consume them and these 4 find out there's only one material worth to open portal to real world, so they did battle royal, only Haqua survive but she get info that the time girl (her significant other) will be summoned 1000yrs from now), so with her pure concept "purify" she developed scripture magic and tools and entrusted Faust to prevent any Isekai people (not let them to take the loot). I loved the character development/tension from all their secrets, the interesting settings and abilities, the animation... and the constant mix of action, tragedy and hope... With great power comes great... irresponsibility. Is death inevitable? Can she ReZero her way out of this insanity, or does she doom us all selfishly (or is it selflessly?)
But alas... seems bleak a season 2 will ever show.
PSA - I skipped the first episode when I rewatched it. Maybe more people would have gotten into it, if not for that bold first episode. However i did give it a 2nd chance later, and honestly its not that bad. But the mc just leaves a bad taste every time she does her job, which is morally upsetting. Overall the story is pretty nice and the Ending(novel ending) is not bad, but it jsut leaves a question as to just "WHy even go through all of that for such bullshit?"(those who read till i ending probably understood what im talking about)

People could have dropped this because of production issues, bad adaptation or bad source material idk. But clearly given the hate it has received, it irked some people greatly that the girl was the one betraying the guy. Since it was the same with Talentless Nana, one can only wonder. Is it the hypocrysy, the betrayal, the edginess... or just the gender ? Because I highly doubt people would have cared that much the other way around.

The thing is this is YURI isekai anime, so the first thing the author did was to kill any of the lost one (at least the male one that are the manifestation of generic self insert main character the otakus and weebs wanted to be as shown in the first episode), which triggered a LOT of them. In this world, wherever there is light, there are also shadows. As long as the concept of winners exists, there must also be losers. The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars, and hatred is born to protect love. There are nexuses, causalities, and destinies. So, wake up to reality and understand that there is no such thing as a happy ending. And for those who don’t understand, I will destroy this world and create a new one with my own hands."**

i feel like all of the criticism of this show gets clumped under oh ur a loser who liked the self insert character, but theres a lot of stuff other than that, personally i dont care about the dude but isnt it jarring to have a protagonist with no issues killing someone who hasnt done anything yet, and before you say oh but he said hes gonna fuck up everyone he hates, true he did say that but in the very next ep she murders a fuckin healer who had no such intentions(sure she revives later but thats irrelevant)by that you can kinda tell she woulda killed the dude regardless of his motivations. the whole edgy idea of saying oh ur just an innocent and im the villian, like yea bitch you are and it doesnt absolve you of any of the blame. Whats honestly kinda creepy is how casual it is, like yea she expresses regret for having to kill him but acts all cutesy tootsie with her murder buddy right after this, wtf thats so jarring to have a character thats murdered countless innocent people with no intentions of hearing them out. i dont think this character deserves a redemption arc or a happy ending

    • @user-yw6fb8us7j

The claims of people wanting the self insert only apply to people trying to morally critique this action.
“Oh he didn’t do anything yet.” Bruh, this doesn’t matter. He has the power to nuke the continent and ruin hundreds of thousands of lives. It might not feel great to kill him, but it is absolutely the correct choice. This is also why she tried to kill the “healer.” His motivations straight up do not matter to her. Nor should they.
Second, you trying to frame the second person as a “healer.” Is just weird. She had a true concept of time, and like all true concepts, it could eventually grow out of control. It doesn’t matter what it does now. It almost feels like you didn’t pay attention to anything on screen.
Her calling the kid “innocent” his her feeling guilty about something that HAS to happen, it’s the same reason she does it casually, it is literally to save the ENTIRE WORLD. Again, it feels like you just didn’t watch.
You also say she “acts cutesy” and has “no intention to hear people out.” Yeah, I’m order to do her job of getting close to people, she pretends to be friendly, wtf do you want her to do lol? Be honest to the living nukes? Also, “hear them out” what is there to hear out? It doesn’t matter what they say, they could still nuke the country. What would you have her do? “Are you going to feel very sorry when you kill thousands?”

i feel as though a lot of people just dont actually read the subtitles for this as much of the complaints are explained within the show itself.
    1. (The whole innocent and he may not go evil view) it is stated, not suggested that no matter what kind of person you are the more you use the pure concept the more it takes over you e.g "Null" guy would eventually want to return everything in the world to "Null"/nothing. its not a question of if its a question of when. and no pure concept user has gone against the rule yet not even in the novels, only thing that we dont know is how long it takes or if there are people who take longer then others to become their concept. as far as we know even Akari "Time" Will lose herself at some point though it is a bit more complicated when it comes to her but thats spoilers which im not going to delve into that deeply.
    2. (the why dont they stop summoning if they know they will go mad argument) - its literally against the law and often if the summoners identities are found they do get punished, and just like real life its not a simple task to fully remove the knowledge on how to summon them (especially since there was a time when they were welcome to this world) and people do it for the same reasons people murder others in real life knowing full well they will go to jail etc some people just dont care or dont think of the long term consequences, or just straight up think they can control the power for their own purposes and dispose of it when not needed.
    3. (Dislike that the Mc is the villain i guess idk if its the half way through the first ep twist or what?) now if u dislike menou cus shes bland or you simply dont like the character thats fair enough but the dislike of the entire show because they are not as morally "good" as they are first presented is odd and a lot of people are saying that shes a hypocrite for saying she is a "Just" and "Strong" priest and acting good seem to have the notion that she actually sees herself as the good guy in all this, when she doesnt. like right after killing the guy she says she knows that hes innocent and that she by the common view is a "villain". Yes she does somewhat justify herself by saying that at the end of the day it is the right thing to do as the otherworlders or essentially the bigger villains at the end of the day, but i think people fail to realise that she is just saying morally she is wrong and a bad person but is doing the correct thing as they have no other method of protection from another major catastrophe due to an otherworlders power. it should be evident aswell that she doesnt want to have to kill them, its the entire reason she has to justify herself but she does believe she has to be the one to do the job. (only full on spoiler here) it is later shown that the church trains orphans in order to become executioners and she decided that in simple terms she would be the one to kill as many otherworlders as possible in order so that the other children wouldn't have to be trained because as much as the character pretends to be emotionless she does have care about others. plus another reason is that she is massively influenced by flares view and approach hence the nickname "flairette" and thats because she had her entire identity kind of wiped thanks to an otherworlders power which doesnt help. which also means before akari she killed her targets pretty quickly before they had time to influence her, and its the main reason why momo is hesitant for akari to be around menou for long as she knows menou under the facade is kind
but anyway if u dont like the show you dont like the show i just found that some of the reasons people give are ones that are explained, and if you dont like the explanation provided then ye like u could argue that the fact otherworlders will go evil takes away some of the morality in the choice to kill them or not but imo what i think the opening was meant to show that even if they will be evil when they first arrive they are innocent and its not their fault. which is atleast explored in that menou basically doesnt want to do it and she knows it is murder not justified killins but at the end of the day from her knowledge it has to be done by someone and to her if someone has to do this horrible task she should so that others dont have to. so i do think its not just black and white but ye.
not like anyone going this paragraph anyway but oh well \_0_/

Loving this show but I've seen more people getting triggered by haters than I've seen haters getting triggered by the show. People asking #2 definitely aren't paying attention but people are allowed to be #1 and #3.
I think it makes sense for many people to not like it. You spend the first episode feeling sorry for this guy, only to have him get murdered from behind simply because he said something sus. (I know it implied he was getting corrupted but by face value I mean.)
She's shown to be a controversial character in the very first episode with no build up to warm yourself up to her, so it's not a surprise that the comments are a civil war on this clip.
Even I found myself a little annoyed with her monologue right after the kill (like you said, describing herself as "pure" and "just" probably didn't do her any favours with newcomers to the series and shows her kinda distancing herself from being at fault,) and regardless of her trauma, her not giving him a real chance and killing him as soon as he says the wrong thing definitely broke my heart for him.
All that said, I think the plot is interesting and I'm interested to see how Menou changes as a character. Doesn't mean I think she's justified in what she's doing or even a good person, but it also doesn't mean I believe people who drop it are wrong or don't understand the characters. Even the best written shit bags won't get a pass from everyone.
TLDR- Let's get along and enjoy what we love.

For me to be upset with this scene had nothing to do with me being a weeb. Which I’m not, I just didn’t f*** with the lack of empathy or mortality that was shown here for this.
