  • From the shocking cover up of Jimmy Savile, to the mistreatment of Lord McAlpine & Sir Cliff Richard and the scandal of Martin Bashir's interview with Diana, Princess of Wales, the BBC's reputation for honesty and integrity has never been lower. With so much of the public feeling alienated by the BBC's output, can it still be regarded as the nation's broadcaster?
    The New Culture Forum proudly presents #NCFHeresies, Episode 5: "BBC Bias Exposed - An Insider's Story", presented by writer and former BBC journalist Robin Aitken, author of "Can We Trust the BBC?" and "The Noble Liar: How & Why the BBC Distorts the News to Promote a Liberal Agenda"
    Featuring interviews with figures such as Lord (Charles) Moore, Rod Liddle, Lord Pearson of Rannoch, Bishop Michael Nazir Ali & Andrea Jenkyns MP, "BBC Bias Exposed" reveals why the BBC is in the grip of an ideology that prevents it reporting fairly on the world.
    Robin Aitken shows how the BBC's internationalist, secularist & multiculturalist world view prevents it from providing fair and balanced news. Never was this more apparent than in it coverage of:
    * the EU & Brexit
    * Donald Trump
    * Black Lives Matter
    * the persecution of Christians (a subject rarely reported compared with BBC reporting on the plight of other persecuted religious minorities).

      Like so many YT commenters you are plain ignorant.
      From WW2 the BBC was a byword for honest reporting. All around the world the BBC's many foreign language stations were regarded as as near to 'the truth' as you could get. This reputation was built on the work of brave and honest BBC reporters and was very much seen as the counterpoint to Communist propaganda from the 50s to the 70s. Unfortunately recent generations of BBC reporters have squandered that reputation and now, quite frankly, it's a sad joke because it's potential to do good as an honest voice has been compromised.

      The BBC's output has undermined democracy in GB since at least the mid-late 1980s. The BBC has leveraged all sorts of agendas that are left leaning. The BBC has given patronage (whether through employment, subject focus, and even the planting of 'leftist' extremists in audiences such as Question Time) to 'leftist' individuals and organisations - doing it all openly, rubbing the public's nose in it, and all the while been utterly incapable of any introspection, objectivity and self-criticism. Has an organisation ever been more deaf-eared?
      In short, it despises British history, British attitudes and British values. It is riddled with COMMON PURPOSE NuLabour apparatchiks from top to bottom within its management - all of whom can most kindly be described as Champagne Socialists enjoying their largesse courtesy of the licence payer, and less kindly as 'Hard Left' activists and propagandists. Arrogant in the extreme, the BBC entertains no criticism of itself, and has utter contempt for the indigenous population who have on their part been open and welcoming and accepting of others, their ideas and their cultures. For the past 35 years it has functioned as the UK's version of the the former CCCP's Pravda. And it is funded by a poll tax borne most unfairly by the poor. Weren't 'the Left' meant to be hard against poll taxes? Hypocrites too, then.

      I have some experience with the BBC as a sub contractor from back in the 90's (audio engineer) and you're right - they know exactly what they are doing politically. I could see they were on a high for months after Blairs 1997 win.
      One job I was on there was seven of us to interview one farmer. That included 2 top of the range people carriers, an overnight stay in a five star hotel and all meals and drinks regardless of cost paid for. The dinner and drinks bill that evening was £450. I'm a council estate lad and in among that company I could sense the snobbery. It was the first time I realized the class system in the UK had not gone away despite what the BBC themselves had been telling me all those years growing up.

    40 years ago as a BBC film director in current affairs I was saddened by the typical approach of journalists I worked with - which was to create a story based on their biased ideas and then go out and film it - so we simply selected people who were going to say the right thing and kept the camera going till the journalist got what they wanted. Mostly they were successful because it’s easy to edit clips to say what you want and, if not, they were simply edited out. My desire as a film maker was to approach the story with an open mind and tell it how it was - I was naive and out of step even then!

      Lord Reith was not impartial and the BBC has never been impartial. Lord Reith used the BBC to break strikes especially the General Strike in 1926. The BBC has long had an antagonistic and vituperative attitude to working class people (by far the majority of the population) and especially to Labour unions. The BBC is patrician and establishment and dominated by high Tories and Whigs.
      Most people seem to the think the BBC is Left Wing. This is patently absurd. The idea the BBC Trust and board of governors is influence by the Worker's Party or the SWP is laughable. 50% of all BBC appointments vetted by the security services for any potential staff who have "left wing" opinons. Eric Hobsbaum is a good example.

      @@myroseaccount The BBC isn't Communist, but it is left-wing. The radical left are just impatient. They sometimes play a useful role for the left in presenting pressure from the left which allows other leftists to portray themselves as moderates advocating sensible and slow change. I can totally see why the radical left has problems with the BBC, but it seems to me like a case of utopians criticising realists.
      You're absolutely right about the BBC never having been unbiased. It's impossible to be unbiased. You can attempt to live up to that principle, but this only tends to make you liable to be undermined by people with a more realistic view. Once you start genuinely believing your own bull about impartiality and making active efforts to give voice to actual political opponents in a fair way, you are easier to take advantage of and subvert.
      An example of this might be that the BBC was forced into providing airtime to some pro-Brexit views despite them clearly being pro-EU. The FBPE-types are incensed that such a platform was granted at all.

      LOL - although many of the points about bias on Brexit, Islam etc. are correct, the BBC has never been impartial - the idea that it was in the past is BS! In 1941 the BBC would not allow Cambridge mathematician Eric H. Neville to say in his biographical talk about maths genius Srinivas Ramanujan that SR showed that India could produce men equal to England's greatest as this contradicted British imperial ideology of White Supremacism. The BBC, as with the rest of the British media has kept silent on the actual history of British colonialism, not reporting the research published by Columbia U.P. in 2018 about how Britain looted $45 Trillion from India which funded much of Britain's industrial development [search 'Jason Hickel India' for his Al Jazeera article].
      Apart from one mention in Simon Schama's 'History of Britain', the BBC also suppresses the fact that the British created Death Camps for the victims of the British-inflicted 1877 Madras Famine which killed 7 million. They gave inmates of these 'relief camps' less starvation rations than Nazis later gave in Buchenwald etc. for hard labour - killing 94% of inmates. As Mike Davis highlighted in his award-winning 'Late Victorian Holocausts', simultaneously record amounts of India's foodgrains were exported for British Food Security and profit. In 1901, The Lancet estimated from the Census that 19 million died of starvation in Western India during the 1890s due to such British 'Let the Poor Indians Starve' policies. The BBC 'Who Do You Think You Are' on Nitin Ganatra told us his ancestors left Gujarat to work as labourers on the brutal East African Railways due to famine in Gujarat - but no mention of WHY there was famine!
      George Orwell wrote famously that 100 million Indians must be forced to starve so that the British can go about their lives as they do.
      In Evan Thompson's BBC documentary about increasing trade with China - there was not one mention of the fact that from 1770-1907 Britain earned 1/7 of its export earnings forcing Opium onto China!
      The comment that Churchill spent the 1930s simply campaigning against Hitler is a myth. WC actually spent most of the 30s campaigning against Indian Independence warning that the English working classes would starve - hinting at the British plunder of Indian foodgrains. As Madhushrie Mukerjee revealed in 'Churchill's Secret War', he was also responsible for War Crimes such as Collective Punishment of Bengal and the prevention of Food Aid from the USA, Canada and Australia reaching the victims of the 1942-3 Bengal Famine which he was largely responsible for creating. The BBC never mentioned this until recent campaigns in the news forced it to do so.

      I watched live footage of a riot in Kenosha. A young man who was defending property was chased by a crazy man who reached for his gun. The young man defended himself. Then a mob started chasing him and he showed great discipline, only shooting when in real danger. I then watched the BBC's "Papers" show that morning. They had a man on who told a bunch of absolute lies and the presenter made no attempt to say this was a developing story and we didn't have the facts yet. He allowed the man to portray the young man as a racist and a murderer. I saw no corrections later.
      Another small example: I saw a show by a BBC presenter about racism in America. The introduction had him driving in a car listening to talk radio. One of the voices said something that sounded "racist". But I recognised the voice as Dennis Prager and it didn't sound like something he would say. With some effort, I found the clip they used. They had completely taken him out of context: he was criticising the left and the BBC had just taken his description of what he says the left does and then presented it as if it was his own views. Disgusting behaviour. I suspect they got this clip from a leftist activist group that clips right-wingers to try and destroy them.
      The BBC is an enemy.

    I worked in journalism at the BBC, although I thankfully left several years ago. Its problem is it employs huge numbers coming out of universities with near identical left-of-centre world views. I could count the number of people I met who were politically conservative on the fingers of one hand. There is little or no diversity of opinion.
    It means the BBC finds it hard, or is incapable of, reporting the world as it is - with its wildly differing viewpoints - but only how they collectively agree the world ought to be. It makes editorial decisions about the world and issues filtered through the heads of small groups of people who eagerly read The Guardian each day.
    I worked at BBC World Service and even much of its output seemed to me absurdly shaped by middle-class, left leaning UK sensibilities. This bias and world view, so at odds with how much of the world actually thinks and behaves, was utterly pervasive among some of its staff at least and the problem appears to have got massively worse over the past five years or so with the advent of priggishly self-righteous and partisan identity politics.

They’re simply ordinary, opinionated people. Why we reify them as the new ‘gods’ worthy of shaping our socioculture defies reason! In 2010 I was out with the BBC programme Inside Out. After we had finished, we stopped for a coffee in a pub and for some strange reason, the conversation turned to donkey jackets. I made the comment that I recalled that all the paddy road gangs in the 70s and 80s had worn these things and yet they had now vanished.
    Innocuous? The camera man jumped as though I had stabbed him with a knitting needle and said that such terminology was disgraceful. What? Donkey jacket? No, referring to the Irish as paddies. They refer to themselves as paddies. I have a bottle of Paddy whisky. The diminutive of Patrick is Paddy. This guy virtually accused me of being racist, which is pretty rich given that I am of Irish stock.

    This was an excellent report by Robin Aitken, the former BBC journalist. I have not had a television for seven years, since moving into my own rented flat. However, because I might occasionally want to watch some live TV or catch-up TV on my laptop, I am obliged to spend £150 or whatever the exact fee is on a television licence. This year the only BBC output that I have watched was the Ashes cricket highlights, a couple of the women's cricket matches, a Clint Eastwood film, and a documentary about the mysterious death of a Swedish woman in Scotland some years ago, an apparent suicide but with evidence pointing to a murder. I made the mistake of starting to watch the BBC's serialisation of "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, a book I had studied at school, only to give up after two episodes because of the appalling liberties that had been taken with the original plot, as well as some of the casting. Here are some of the reasons why I so dislike the BBC now. 1. The way they covered up the appalling sexual abuse of minors committed by Jimmy Savile. 2. The way they turned a blind eye to what Stuart Hall, Rolf Harris and others were up to. 3. The constant, relentless bias in the news coverage where anyone with a more right of centre point of view is ignored, talked over or treated as if they were a neo-Nazi.4.The constant preaching about climate change and other environmental issues. 5. The way they managed to ruin Top Gear. 6. The marginalisation of classical music on the BBC channels, ditto jazz ( but there is at least some to be heard on BBC radio of course). 7. The BBC's failure to cover some important sporting events eg giving up on Test match cricket years ago. 8. The endless woke ideologies on show in various dramas and so-called comedy programmes. 9. The obsession with diversity, meaning they recruit heavily from certain groups regardless of the person's ability to do the job. 10. The fawning over the brilliant black British cellist when he deservedly won Young Musician Of The Year some years ago, the presenters kept talking about his race, when he simply wanted to talk about the music and how he had performed it, you could tell that he was actually embarrassed by their approach. 11. The arrogance of interviewers such as Emily Maitliss, who will often shout down politicians and not let them have their say. 12. The obvious bias of presenters such as Gary Lineker, who really ought to just stick to the football. 13. Question Time panels loaded with left of centre people. 14. Dumbed down content even on BBC2. 15. Anti-British views being expressed during the coverage of the King's Coronation earlier this year. 16. Very little in the way of pro-Christian content, we seem to be down to Songs of Praise and the Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College Cambridge, followed by Catholic Mass, broadcast on Christmas Eve, plus religious music on BBC Radio 3 eg Handel's Messiah. 17. The fact that I have to pay a licence fee for a TV station I no longer want to watch and that I have to pay this to legally watch ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 too, no wonder I no longer have a TV. 18. The truly appalling Question Time programme just a couple of days after 9/11 when the audience was packed with people hostile to America and the American ambassador to the UK was reduced to tears, unforgiveable in my view. 19. The fact that most BBC jobs are advertised in the leftist Guardian newspaper, Peter Sissons once told of how, when he worked at the BBC, he was advised to read the Guardian if he needed background information on any given news story. 20. The outrageously high salaries paid to some BBC presenters and journalists, can Gary Lineker for example really be worth over £1,000,000 per annum ? 21. The armies of staff sent to cover sporting events overseas at great expense, usually there are far too many pundits and an awful lot of time spent chatting rather than actually showing the action. 22. The dumbing down of BBC Radio 3 noted by many of its long term listeners. 23. The annoying way that many of the news broadcasters interrupt and talk over their guests, especially any politician who is more right of centre. 24. The complete lack of balance in most of the news reporting. 25. The arrogant assumption of the news broadcasters that they speak for the nation. 26. The lack of reporting on key issues such as persecution of Christians around the world, mainly (but not always) Muslim men grooming and sexually abusing white working class girls and some Sikh girls in many UK cities and towns, various white paedophiles in high places, the plight of the alienated white working classes and especially the men, sex education policies in UK schools. 27. The tedious over dramatic music which accompanies the news broadcasts, satirised brilliantly by comedian Bill Bailey some years ago. 28. The BBCs involvement in the de-banking of Nigel Farage. I could go on all night, but I won't because I know I am preaching to the converted here. Will the thought police come for me ? Probably yes, because free speech is being eroded in this country now. Any politician who pledges to scrap the licence fee at the next election, and can keep that promise, gets my vote. But will anyone make that pledge and would the metropolitan elites who control everything allow it to happen ? Probably not. The BBC must reform, it must become fair and impartial once more, or it will die.

    During the 90s I was still listening to Radio 4 every day, although people like John Humphreys were already a step too far. But by 2000 only the World service and one or two excellent exceptions like the Moral Maze were still on my personal schedule. Now I won’t even listen to TMS. Strange to relate, Humphreys now seems almost broadminded compared to the Maitlis brigade, and the Woke Service is a goner.

TV licencing has become demanded money with menaces. They now promote ideologies that the British public are just not interested in. How was this allowed to happen? On a similar vein, what's happened to Labour? They seem to be more interested in middle class ideas of identity and inclusion than the real issues facing the working class.

The Government in April 2019 did support leave but that was 3 years after the referendum and at that time Theresa May (who had supported remain) was PM. The relevant fact is that the Government in 2016 then led by David Cameron supported remain and used taxpayers money to pay for a pamphlet in support of that position.
