- Former BBC journalist Robin Aitken (author of "Can We Trust the BBC?") interviews Lord (Charles) Moore, former editor of The Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph & The Spectator and official biographer of Margaret Thatcher.
In a wide-ranging discussion, Lord Moore discusses Mrs. Thatcher's attitude towards -- and attempts to reform -- the BBC, the BBC's failure to understand how or why the public could vote for Thatcher, Brexit or Donald Trump and the British Broadcasting Corporation's sneering & snobbish attitude towards patriotism.
He also discusses the BBC's uncritical obsession with BLM as well as Islam, towards which it is very protective whilst being overtly hostile to Christianity -- failing, for example, to properly cover Christian persecution around the world. Lord Moore & Robin Aitken also consider whether reform of the BBC is desirable and achievable or whether the institution should be scrapped completely.
This interview was recorded for episode 5 of the New Culture Forum's landmark documentary series "Heresies" (#NCFHeresies). Written & presented by Robin Aitken, "BBC Bias Exposed: An Insider's Story", may be seen here (and features excerpts from this interview): • Scrap the BBC? Rod Lid...

Jimmy Saville worked there and was covered by the BBC. That should tell you all you need to know about their true sense of morality and ethics.
They also have a statue of Prospero and Ariel (from Shakespeare's last play The Tempest) above the entrance to BBC House in Portland Place made by Eric Gill who raped his two daughters & dog but the BBC justify keeping it as it's "art"

If you only watched the BBC you'd think that Britain was a small african country.
Yeah every time I turn on Radio 4 there seems to be some ethnic minority female moaning about her lot in life in this terrible country. I turn it off right away.
Not just the bbc if you watch the adverts on all other channels you would think this was a black country with a few white people mostly married to “people of colour” and any aged white couples had mixed race grandchildren.
@@hazyjane4161 Yes, I've been living in this country for 64 years and I've never actually met a mixed-race couple, so they do seem extremely over represented in adverts to me......
Also ITV is the same. Even Vera based in Northumberland has more blacks than in reality. Disgraceful
@Captain McDog It's so cringeworthy, I wonder how black people feel about it? I'd feel patronised I think. I'm bald, but if bald people started appearing in every advert to signal 'incusivity' I'd be a bit embarrassed. Also you never see any oriental folk, why not I wonder, there are plenty in UK.......
Charles Moore is so sensible. I have a lot of admiration for him.
Doesn't this just show the growing irrelevance of the BBC.
No matter who's driving their Bus, it's still heading for the Cliff Edge.
Watched the excellent University Challenge last week.....until.... "These questions are on English Politicians who supported colonial slavery."
The wretched BBC doesn't miss a a trick.
It makes me laugh that for the past few series they keep trying to shoehorn in questions about women writers, scientists etc., and no one can ever answer more than one supplementary question.
And had to have a set on Rappers.
Tragically I knew the Canadian one was Drake.
With the complete dumbing down of Mastermind, University Challenge has always seemed the last bastion of intelligent quiz shows, but the PC virus has now infected this show I've been watching for 40 years or so. The PC questions are so incongruous they make me cringe.
Damn it. That and Only Connect are the only BBC shows I really watch. I've noticed the University Challenge questions getting more and more leftie. Whenever there is a question that doesn't use a personal pronoun, you can be sure that it will be about a woman. The bonus questions often have a theme, and you often don't actually have to know anything about the theme to answer the question. For example, they ask something like "Alice McWoman wrote a book about famous historical figures, identify them from her descriptions" - When questions take this form, they almost invariably take the opportunity to highlight a woman.
Then you get the questions about feminism and female authors - which I can often answer because I like to know my enemy. Often the people and theories cited are popular among the progressive crowd. It's like knowing who Roxanne Gay is or who founded Ms. Magazine.
I once got all three bonus questions and predicted the second two. The answer to the first was Immanuel Kant and before the second two were asked, I predicted the answers would be Hegel and then Marx. Fair enough, but lol.
It would be nice to have a question where the answer was Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, Ayn Rand, Thomas Sowell. I think Mises and Rand came up once that I recall, but that's not much! Thomas Piketty on the other hand?
Was it Thomas Mann who observed that trying to reason with those who do not possess that ability
is like giving medicine to a dead man? Yet we are asked to give our money instead!
So refreshing to hear a wise man's views on the warped logic that surrounds us today.

Brilliant intelligent man. So insightful. I'm really sad about the BBC.
Trump? You could say the Biden. How on earth did he become president? Trump? We understand why Trump is the most popular president in history.
Not from watching the bbc was his point. Its obvious how biden became president from the bbc version of the news, trump was the most unpopular president in history, had bungled the pandemic and biden was a return to normalcy with a forward thinking, inclusive platform and team.
Makes sense if it was all there was to be said, in reality, biden was out of it, his platform angered lots of people, his vp pick was one of the most unpopular candidates in the presidential race, he avoided engaging with trump and defending his platform whenever an excuse was possible and nowhere near as many people cared about trumps controversies as they thought.
End result, election was far closer than the bbc thought it would be, they got the result right but not through any real understanding of what was happening on the ground.
@@andrewshaw1571 Without the media Biden would never have won that is clear from the constant orange man bad and finished off with the covid hysteria, Trump had no chance with such a brain washed voter. Or the other option is that there was massive wide scale voter fraud.
@@chatteyj I'm guessing the latter.
@@chatteyj Trump had all the chances in the world. Think: the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptp story in the final week of the campaign may in itself have been enough to change the result. Many people may be brainwashed, but there are a few key stories and people who were censored and if Trump had managed to make it unviable for them to be censored, he would have won. For example, Carpe Donktum was making memes that gained huge traction in convincing people - he was banned. Before that you had Milo, Alex Jones and others who were throttled. The former two may not be your cup of tea, but either one of them might have been able to make the difference. Trump didn't come to Milo's aid when the GOP establishment took the opportunity to sink him.
Well dear that's not true.. maybe in your world you, you probably think he didn't lose but he did .
He’s forgotten how Christians are persecuted in China as too.
The number of countries that could be added to that list is vast. Countries where it is safe and equal to be a Christian form a tiny minority in the world - and sadly, even in the UK we are beginning to realise we are on that trajectory in so many ways. The first step of that process: you stereotype a group of people with negative epithets; then they are vilified for any action or comment that can be found as a criticism, at which point the media intensifies hatred and contempt for that group amongst the general public; the group is then sidelined in society as nothing is reported about them, so that, for example, persecuted Christians overseas are ignored in favour of other religions in news reporting, even though they are the most widely affected religion; then they become criminalized for following their religious principles; and finally they are rounded up and tortured for their beliefs under the cloak of the law.
@@AnnFBug True, wow and damn.
That is not the case.
No one is persecuted in China for their religious beliefs.
Have you visited China?
The bbc is now banned in my home. Never thought I'd ever say that after 40 years of watching it..
In treating Charles Moore as they did during his time as guest editor, I'm wondering whether those inside the BBC saw a mirror image of themselves in him, and in order to extinguish their own sense of self-imposed guilt decided to shackle and prevent him from airing views and opinions which he, they and millions of others share but which for bizarre reasons no one is allowed to discuss - race and immigration being the most obvious examples.
Irony. The BBC is incapable of recognising a mirror image since it is equally incapable of self-reflection?
This is the problem, the whole thing is shrouded in a sort of deluded fashion of "being decent" and "what's the decent thing". This then moves from reporting to opinion making. The right wing press is equally suffering from this. The pursuit of different peoples ideas and standard of "what's decent" becomes the main focus. The problem at the BBC however is shameful because we all have to pay them for the pleasure of the opinions on their decency.
De-fund the BBC
What a sensible, intelligent, perceptive conversation
... "The idea of having the BBC - BRITISH Broadcating Corporation pretending it isn't BRITISH is just ridiculous!" (Charles Moore)...
Thank you Charles Moore👍. The sooner the BBC licence fee is abolished the better. As an aside, (I’m a regular radio listener), what has happened to all the licence fee £s over the period of the pandemic? That money has kept coming in, but there has been by and large mainly archive material/reruns on BBC Sounds. So where have these £s been used, sure as hell not on radio output!
Excellent programme.

The BBC are Londocentric. So much stems from that. London is London, everywhere else is "different"
Robin and Charles thank you. My only criticism you both seemed to hold back a bit too much.. Perhaps you have hopes to put salient points on the BBC in future times.
Thank you for a most incredibly insightful and unbiased overview of the tragedy that is the BBC.
What a pleasure it was to hear that conversation!!
What a lovely level headed man. He should run our country!
An excellent discussion chaps, thank you very, very much . I haven't watched or paid for the bbc in years and years and no self respecting citizen of these isles should do so either. A despicable corporation.
Should be called the London Broadcasting Corporation, out of touch with national opinions and views. Thus their Election and Brexit predictions are way out. Need to consider what percentage of Licence Fees are paid by Race, Age and Location. They may have a shock!
I agree with the notion of ¨caging¨the truth!
Excellent, I agree with all that Lord Moore said. I've watched several face to face conversations about the BBC recently, and on the question of BBC financing, nobody has mentioned the E.U's financial support of the BBC, for the last 20 years, that --so I've read, exceeded multiple Millions of Euros. As the saying goes, ''He who pays the Piper, calls the Tune''. Further, the stampede of BBC, and even retired BBC, Far left political executives, journalists and heads of programming---moved to all of our top Universities and schools. All funded via the E.U. A list of their names, was printed in a national daily newspaper, 3 yrs ago.The effects of this ,has been plain to see, in recent years.
Fantastic and illuminating discussion
Really enjoyed this. Nothing clever to add!
36:58 While he is largely correct in his dissection of the BBC, Charles Moore has got this part wrong. The BBC cannot explain the difference between 'Islam and Islamism', because it is an invented distinction, one that the BBC propagates. There is no such thing as 'Islamism'. This is a journalistic deflection to defend Islam from criticism, from the same people who forbade the term 'Islamic terrorism' from appearing in newspapers. The BBC thinks that If Islam is to be explained at all it must be by a Muslim 'scholar'. That is why you never see (except once) Robert Spencer or a Muslim apostate on the BBC to give chapter and verse on Islamic doctrine. They prefer those who dissemble to those who tell the truth. Politically correct realities are the only realities to the BBC.
When a company or corporation fills its ranks with people of one persuasion, then that organisation will reflect a lot of that persuasion.

I think the BBC were quite good at explaining why people voted for Trump. Where the bias came out was in presenting all those reasons as inherently bad. For example, a large part of the US white population do fear becoming a minority in the USA within their lifetime. Just for thinking that they were presented as racist bigots.

Do explain Black privilege, silly woman?
I haven't watched Newsnight since Kirsty Wark called Ayaan Hirsi Ali 'the controversial critic of islam'. I was disgusted with Ayaan's treatment by the BBC who obviously had no comprehension of what that woman went through, or perhaps they don't care about how women are treated by 'the religion of peace', the only thing that interested Wark was that Ayaan criticises islam. Shame on the BBC.
The Austtralian Broadcasting Corporation (formerly Commission) treated Ayaan Hirsi Ali in just the same way. Decades after they were first created they were largely parasitic on the BBC's once excellent drama comedy and documentary output. The ABC got a lot of the reflected glory. Seems they follow them into the left-propaganda morass too.
When I saw those poor people clinging to aircraft to escape the Taliban, I thought...now there's real Islamophobia!
Errm... I'm no supporter of the BBC, but surely the most important thing about Ayaan Hirsi Ali is precisely that she is a critic of Islam? That's what most of her books and interviews are about. Perhaps you were trying to say something more nuanced, but as it stands your post makes no sense at all.

It has never been necessary for Britain to have a state funded broadcaster. Even when setbup in 1921, the government could have allowed the creation of several commercial stations, as did the US. It tells us a lot about the governance of Britain that the state controlled the radio and its content.

Charles Moore is one of my favourite journalists but he is wrong about islam. It's not a right wing view to state, "Islam: the submission of will to Allah" because that is what it means. And they blinfdly follow it. All muslims use the phrase inshallah. That is why it is so savage: Bataclan: Rotherham, London Underground, Nice, London Bridge, Fusilier Rigby, the Twin Towers, Manchester Arena, Achille Lauro where they killed a man in a wheelchair. Very true. And I do wish he wouldn't use these ridiculous words 'Islamist/Islamism' - it's a cowardly way to avoid speaking plainly.
He's only going to admit certain things because he's part of the mainstream media circus himself. I didn't agree with some of his statements. for example, I don't believe that those who set the BBC's agenda are merely living in a bubble and don't know any better: nobody is that stupid. They are up to something. The best thing to do is scrap it.
Trump statistically made an excellent president. the economy was revived, crime went down and he boosted financial support for black and ethnic families to help them start businesses' and get back to work.
Wrong. I'm not sure what country you actually live in but when Trump left office the economy was in the dumps. ALL types of violent crimes-- assault on women; assault in general; & property theft including automobile rose. e
Ethnic groups like blacks and Latin saw no extra money coming their way & those two groups actually suffered more economically than any of the other groups.Again I do not know what planet you live on but it is not planet Earth and you do not live in these U2mnited States of America. PLEASE go to Russia where Trumo BMF is. U r welcome there and u will be happy.
The other reply to your comment was insane. I would have voted for Trump, but part of the problem was that Trump was a disappointing President, just not in the way the elite say he was. He failed to drain the swamp. He allowed himself to be surrounded by people who hated him. Liberal loons might be baffled by this, but Trump was too intent on winning people over and on being liked rather than enforcing his will and the mandate upon which he was elected. He would have been well within his rights to fire every senior bureaucrat he could within agencies ranging from the FBI to the State Department. The problem was that the people running these departments weren't just dragging their feet - they were actively opposing his agenda. The machine of government itself was his enemy and America's enemy.
I think the President may have to get appointees approved by Congress, but does he also need approval to fire people? Just get rid of them and if the positions aren't filled because Congress blocks them, so be it. America needed someone willing to do that or the equivalent. Someone who could stretch the acceptable to the limits.
Also, Trump continued the out of control spending and didn't really manage to rein in the war machine. You could argue that the US is only out of Afghanistan now because of him and that they didn't play a bigger role in Syria because he blocked that, but I think his supporters deserved far more than that.
And then there is the social media censorship issue which probably alone 'lost' him the fortified election. There were several people who, if they had still been on social media or not being throttled, could have swung the few thousand voters he needed to win. they would have been creating news, making videos and putting Trump's case to the public, but instead they were banished to the phantom zone. The media and social media companies won the election for Biden and Trump did nothing to sort that out. You could argue the censorship of the New York Post's Hunter Biden story alone was what cost him the election.
I get that he didn't have a political machine around him, but you have to make do with what you have. There were people like Bannon who should have just been given important roles. There were supporters with some experience that he could have brought in rather than getting lumbered with a bunch of W. Bush people who hated Trump.

The BBC could have managed the Biden campaign in Europe for the bias they displayed!
It's great to see such a respected media figure as Lord Moore talking so candidly about the BBC. No doubt there were worthy intentions when setting up the BBC model however, Lord Moore has pointed out the obvious flaw of that model - because of the way it is funded it has - almost by default - become a monopoly, which means it is not constrained to be impartial, even though there is a legal requirement from OFCOM to do so. Personally, I find the sneering arrogance directed at, in particular, the ethnic English quite repugnant and beneath contempt. I rarely if ever watch the BBC now, and if I ever do, I feel I've let myself down.
It's been taken over by the Left: they use it for woke propaganda.
Not just a legal obligation, but a moral imperative.
From my experience the BBC is a self-serving hegemony. I once complained about a Radio 4 programme and despite my persistence, I was fobbed off with half replies and procrastination. I finally had to send my complaint to Ofcom. I have to say Ofcom, in respect to investigating complaints made against the BBC, is a total waste of taxpayers' money. Apparently they will not let the complainant know the result of any investigation they carry out. Therefore there is no resolution for the complainant, I don't even know whether they bothered to investigate my complaint, so have to assume that they did not. The BBC really ought to be renamed the MBC, the Marxist Broadcasting Corporation.
I have written to the Radio 4 Feedback programme several times. I have never even received an acknowledgement.
You would be utterly amazed at the amount of tax funded charities and organizations that simply don't do anything that keep the upper classes employed . Anything from heritage to foreign aid , children's charities , animal, welfare, the biggest is the BBC . All of whom reward themselves in tax funded galas on tax payers money. Trump was much less coherent than Thatcher? I don’t remember how coherent Thatcher was but perhaps not that coherent if the bbc didn’t know what she was talking about. Perhaps she was more eloquent than Trump but Trump really knew how to sell his message. If he wasn’t coherent then I wouldn’t know how to describe his successor.
There are plenty of speeches by Mrs. Thatcher here on RUclips. The BBC’s inability to understand Mrs. Thatcher had far more to do with their competing world views. The BBC doesn’t recognise anything that lies outside of its own Weltanschauung. It’s really that simple.
Charles is perhaps much too understanding of the BBC’s biases and hatreds. The late, great Peter Sissons was rather more to the point about its autocratic behaviour in relation to the tolerance of diversity of thought and opinion.
The BBC lost me as a viewer a long time ago but it seems the rest of the public are catching up....

Charles Moore is very measured...and gentle with his critique of the BBC....He perhaps fails to grasp how divisive the BBC is....and how a large part of the UK audience see the BBC as an enemy.
Charles Moore is so careful in choosing his words. Very impressive person and really good interview.
What was a once respected broadcaster is now nothing more then a not so impartial propaganda signal
The most recent edition of TV's Question Time saw its chairperson refer to one of the panel as
being connected with the "right leaning" Spectator magazine. Can anybody say when there was
a BBC reference at any time to anything being "left leaning"?! I won't be holding my breath.
If i remember correctly, years ago the BBC wouldn't even have London on the weather map, it would just name places nearby. They are strange people.
Very obvious but I never interpreted it this way: 'The' British Broadcasting Company. There is not a lot 'British' about it now though.
“It would be a brave politician who would take the BBC on”. And there you have it; the core reason for no change in years. When will they find some backbone?
Superb!!! Thank you. 🙏😁❤️
Many in the Torie party agree with the leftwing BBC.
Yes a big problem.

Excellent interview. Thank you. 👏👏👏👏👍
If Charles Moore was so concerned, why did he pull out of being BBC Chairman?
Put them behind a paywall
They already are, and it’s “obligatory”. That’s the only problem here.
We've been talking about how biased the BBC is for years now. It has not listened to the public it purports to serve and it has not even tried to change it's ways, just carrying on as usual with it's fingers firmly stuck in it's ears. Even as people switch off and tune in to alternatives like GB News it goes on screwing the British public with the ridiculously outdated compulsory fee. Enough is enough. Stop watching if you're still crazy enough to do so, and cancel your direct debit now. That is the only way they will understand just how detested they truly are.
Great interview. The BBC has done a lot of excellent programs over the years but has really dropped the ball with all the woke content in recent times. From Australia.
As an Australian, I only know about this awareness within Britain of the flaws in the BBC media model from a RUclips channel.
An excellent interview! A gem from the New Culture Forum.
