    Whaaaaaat? Don't like rootbeer??? I love rootbeer. It's funny to hear someone say it tastes like medicine. Goes to show that we get used to certain flavors that are common wherever we are from. Very interesting!

    I lived in Sedona for 6 years, and never experienced a Vortex. But that was before it was a big thing. I think it's the warm sunshine and scenery that energizes people. I liked root beer when I was a kid , because I felt big like an adult drinking beer.

    Root Beer is one of my favourite drinks, we have a poor selection in the UK but our local Sainsburys stocks Carters and Virgils. Really missing our time we spent in Arizona on our Route 66 trip years ago, making me want to book a trip right now!

    Root beer was originally a medicine, both in Europe and the US back in the 1800's then it was turned into a soft drink in the US, but apparently it's flavor stayed as a medicine in Europe (not just in the UK)

    Sedona is great. We went thru there in 93 on our way back to Vegas from the Grand Canyon/Flagstaff. Couldn't spend much time there because we had to catch a red eye flight back home from Vegas.
    There's another cool town down the road to the west called Jerome. It's an Old West mining town. We went thru there as well.

    In the olden days root beer was actually made with plants and roots not just "Root Beer Flavor". Specifically Sassafras root bark containing Safrole. The Safrole is now illegal but the "Good" brands still use Sassafras extract that's Saffrole free but the "Cheaper" more "Commercial" brands do not. Go into any grocery store and buy a commercial root beer and see if the flavor and smell is as strong or if it's much sweeter and syrupier. I for one love the "Medicin-ey" root beer because it tastes like real root beer.

    • @geno5360
      @geno5360 5 лет назад

      A&W, Barq's, Mug's that kinda stuff. Not Stewart's (Which is my personal favorite, but again more "authentic" and I absolutely adore it) or Boylan or IBC. Heck maybe try the Stewart's actually if you can find it, maybe you'll like it.

    Root Beer flavor is from the Sassafras tree root. They used to make root beer from Sassafras root, but I don't think they do anymore. Now it's synthesized from some other stuff.

    The popular american soda pop root beer is flat, sugary and foamy. You probably had a craft root beer, more of a bitter sweet exotic flavor with sparkling mineral water for a parched throat.

    My daughter and I spent a month in the Sadona RV park on the river downtown after we lost our home in a wildfire in 2012. I loved hiking all the local trails. On our last night there I began having chest pain, but we had reservations for a night at the Grand Canyon. After our visit there, we were heading back home after being on the road for three months. By the time we reached Texas, driving straight through, I knew I was in trouble but had to get my daughter back to Oklahoma because I thought I was having a heart attack. When we finally got a couple of hours West of Tulsa, I had to call friends to come to our rescue on the turnpike. They dropped me off at the hospital which had to transfer me to another where they removed my appendix.

    My wife is from England (Midlands) and she said the same thing - root beer tastes like medicine. Not sure what sort of medicine it is but to me Root Beer is the BEST soda in the world. IBC is some weird stuff though. If you want real some real Root Beer you need Richardson's from a tap. Barqs is a different type of Root Beer and I like it.
    My first time in Sedona was in 1969. I've been back around 5 times. I have a Brother that lives in Phoenix and Sedona is a short drive north (short drive for us, not you two, lol)
    Yes, we boondock a lot.

    Well hello again guys :) I think my late father visited Sedona along his RV travels. Don't believe I've heard of a vortex. But I'm definitely open-minded too. That burger looked delicious except I can't do cheese and especially spice. As far as root beer goes, I like it..but it's been 10 years since I had any soda. Great stuff folks. And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

  • @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay
    @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay 5 лет назад

    Rootbeer is a Sassafras Root flavored beverage. And if I'm not mistaken Sassafras Root was indeed used as a medicinal treatment back in the colonial days, especially among Native Americans. But Rootbeer is an acquired taste if you're not used to it, and apparently no where but the US is accustomed to it. But it's as common choice for a drink to us as is Coca Cola and Dr. Pepper (which is a spicy cherry/prune flavored drink). Oh, I called Rootbeer as a beverage because it comes in two forms, the carbonated version, which is most common, and then a smoother, non-carbonated version, that's usually specialty bottled with the name of Sassafras something or other on it. A little has station just down the road from me 25+ years ago used to carry it. It was pretty good.

    • @SNMG7664
      @SNMG7664 5 лет назад

      I believe it's actually the "wintergreen" flavouring in root beer that makes it taste like medicine to most people outside of North America. In Europe and a lot of Asia it's a flavouring used almost exclusively in dental products like mouthwash, dental floss, toothpaste. Sometimes it'll pop up in stuff like chewing gum or children's cough syrup.

  • @mountainhobo
    @mountainhobo 5 лет назад +3

    For root beer you need to try root beer float. Then the taste works, but you need ice cream inside. (Oh, and as another poster commented, try A&W root beer).

  • @Nevada_Dan
    @Nevada_Dan 5 лет назад

    Well, that was enjoyable! And as far as root beer is concerned, I find that you pretty much have to be raised drinking the stuff to REALLY enjoy the stuff. If you ever want to give it one more go, however, I strongly recommend either "A&W" or "Dad's" brand of root beer. The "IBC" stuff you were drinking... swill, absolute swill. And that's all I have to say about that. BTW, a warm New Year's greetings from Henderson, Nevada!

    The reason it's popular is we don't use root beer as a flavoring for medicine but rather we commonly use cherry instead. Also due to the fact that we grow up drinking that now and then. We have no negative memories of it like you get with medicine from being sick. There are some drinks I have tried that have a distinct medicine flavor taste that says cherry flavor but taste absolutely disgusting to me.

    Should go to a regular fast food place and get root beer there. That definitely does not taste like medicine. It's not th e same thing I feel. I've tasted a version of what you have and it was gross not at all like what I'm used to.

    root beer RULES! Brits taste buds are SSSSSSSSTRANGE. Every Brit equates the smell to medicine, so they automatically "hate" it. Smells nothing like medicine...I've never had a wintergreen/Vanilla flavored medicine in my life

    Originally Coca Cola was used as a medicine and you had to go to a pharmacy to get it at their soda fountain.

    Because Americans do not have any 'medicine' that tastes like root beer (if we do, it's certainly not widespread), so we've never had that ability to equate the taste of root beer with "medicine". If you grew up with root beer only tasting like root beer, not like anything else, you'd likely not think of it negatively. :) However, I remember skimming through some of the history of root beer and I do believe it (the root?) was originally used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes.
