    It’s a boost with light grit, and a single BBD which provides very short delay times. In other words, an analog slap back delay and booster. The short delay times can provide a ‘filter’ effect due to comb filtering, as well as the natural darkening the BBD provides with the blend set higher. I like mine quite a bit

    This is what I'd consider a "character" pedal, where it may not be something you NEED, but does something that can be handy for a specific section or cool modulation type effect, or as a type of OD with some additional processing.

    • @thomasayresol
      @thomasayresol 2 года назад +1

      With all these guys running around looking for boost or OD pedals to stack (and many of them getting pricey)... this seems like the perfect pedal to drive/stack other OD pedals. People are paying hundreds for mid-focused boutique pedals, when all they really need is this. Crazy this pedal is getting overlooked. I glanced by it before but will definitely give it another look.

    The spread knob is doing exactly the same thing on the first half as it is on the second half. It’s a delay time control. But up until 12 o’clock, the delay is too short for human ears to hear as two distinct sounds. So it sounds like a filtering effect an the frequencies phase with one another.

    I've had this pedal for five or so years, it's great. I think of it as a subtle 'tone conditioner' - the blend and spread pots add a pinch of modulation that work as a kind of secret sauce. It's not obvious and it doesn't have to be, it's just better that way. Another Mike Mathews special indeed.

    where you'll really experience what this pedal actually milks, is by using it in conjunction with a Distortion pedal, to add some level and carve the tone of the other unit. Although this seems to get more extreme than some of those other pedals used for the same purpose. Subtlety between various elements IS what creates a great tone.

  • @graymcd
    @graymcd 2 года назад +27

    I don't own one, but based on your demo I believe the "phase" notch you're hearing at the first part of the speed knob travel is a comb-filter effect created by the extremely short delay at that point.

    The spread seems to be just a delay time control for the echo. But if you make an echo short enough it turns into an out-of-phase effect. I could imagine this would great as a lead booster in front of a driven amp - if the amp isn't too driven to handle the echo well. But a subtle echo can work well, the Carbon Copy delay sure does in front of a 800.

    I have a Mighty Sound M5 analog delay mini pedal. I set the repeat to barely on but by keeping the amount of delay back a bit it lets my highs thru and I get that same sound but without any loss of bite which I noticed was not happening with the E-H. I only use it when I need to fatten up a sound never for a real delay pedal. Best of all I bought mine on AliExpress for $23 with free shipping.

    You showed up in my feed because of the holy & all knowing algorithm. I just caught this this morning. You're right. I had no idea what that pedal did. I've seen the EHX demos: THEY have no idea what this ACTUALLY does either (oh, how I wish I could use italics, instead of all caps & quotation marks). This is amazing. No, it's not too subtle. I have (or have had, & flipped) all sorts of "intense" effects. Lately I've gone down the rabbit hole of "always on" pedals & plain vanilla OD's & distortions. The EQ shelving & (usable) manual filter. I need that. Thanks. Great video. /// I had to come back & add to this. The Velvet Underground riff turned my day around. Great playing in general, but your choices of what to play is also fantastic.

    A friend of mine used this with a Wet Dry Wet thing he did. In the center, all analog vintage amp... no reverb... just amp. Left was the output of his Strymon gear into a clean 40w amp... that's what he did most of the time... two amps. But in rehearsal I heard him set up a second 40 or 50w amp for the stereo of the strymon... the other channel... Left...and he used this Analogizer... it blew my mind completely. The hype and digital qualities of the R amp were "erased" by the comb filter, and eq of the L amp. The whole thing was huge. I always meant to try to recreate it... this video reminds me I want to try.

If you can make this pedal go full wet, I hihgly recommend doing a wet/dry stereo set up with this because it will soudn THICC! Head Rush, DD7 and I think the DD3T/DD8 do this as well.

    Its basically what the J.Rockett Ape pedal was trying to do except it also has an onboard delay for that signal and it is also running it parallel with the a clean and boosted signal. Almost like a klon accept the distortion or 'clipping circuit' is instead the mild distortion that comes from analog delay in the repeats. and the more you boost the input signal, the more it saturates that analog delay distortion circuit. This was an effort to emulate analog delay and tape delay modules that are often used in the studios simply as pre-amps without any repeats to warm up or live-up a guitar signal. Brittany Howards tone is famous for having a distorted space echo running parallel as its own amp basically. EHX is capitalizing on the 'mystery' of this pedal by not naming it after or even in reference to their competitors, because they would rather it be a knod to their own delay machines, which it is.

    I like it! This would definitely help with say a 2 Notes IR loader and that slap-back delay function would be a blast to play with.

    This would be a great start to a rockabilly/psychobilly rig.

    Huh. Interesting explanation - I definitely read the EHX catalog at some point and just kinda scratched my head at the description of this pedal.
    Also, as a Canadian I must comment on your use of headwear - it's confusing. See, in Canada, we wear tuques to keep warm, so we actually put them on our heads (not perched on top) and pull them over our ears. What is your tuque for?
    Anyways, nice vid.

    too subtle to use ??? ...i go through tweaks, round and round, trying my best not to over use anything ....the subtler the better....i might run that closer to it's extents than other things, but i am sure i wouldn't run out of adjustment......it's not so much what each pedal does, as it is what they all do together.

    If you put it on only a second amp on the other side of the stage, you can fake stereo you guitar.
