  • John Ford won four Oscars for Best Director and didn't even show up to collect them all. One time he was fishing, another time he was at war. Seventy years later, Hollywood's greatest legends - Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino - still can't touch his record.

There is no director today, nor in the last 50 years, who measures up to his shoes.

A legend and one of the best, but truth be told, Oscars don't mean anything - Kubrick, Tarantino, Hitchcock, PTA and many more don't have an Oscar for directing but they're among the GOATs and far better than Cimino, Campion, the ones who directed Everything Everywhere All At Once and some others who won it

And not one win for a Western which goes against what most film fans would guess and where his reputation rests. He was nominated for Best Director though on Stagecoach, 1939.
