The fact that they developed cloth and hair physics simulation tech all the way back then is pretty insane to me. Looks like it was cut or heavily gimped in the final game, but I suspect that's because of hardware limitations and optimisation issues

A lot of developers were very imaginative and ambitious back then. They are still now, but back then it felt like developers felt like they could promise the moon and you could feel that they meant it even if they couldn’t deliver. Halo 2 had to scrap everything and start over in the last years of development because the earlier build just put too much on the Xbox. Stuff like that always stuck with me during this period of gaming.

@@gabethebabe3337 Sometimes the best art comes from situations where you have a lot of restrictions, where you have to get creative to achieve something. I still have some pencil work that I haven't been able to top in over 10 years of doing digital art.
You can still find that ambition in the indie side, just look at all the attention to detail in games like Highfleet (made afaik by a single person) where, despite the retroish 2D nature of the game, the environments are full of detail explosions and other effects look more real than in most AAA games with budgets in the millions. Or look at something like X4, a HUGE space sandbox sim, made by a relatively small (albeit experienced) team with a tiny budget where you can sit on the flight deck of a carrier and observe the launching of fighters in real time, watch as they fly off into battle and then return to repair and resupply, then walk to an M sized deck on the ship, pull your frigate out of storage and take it to battle yourself, your frigate which itself carries a pair of smaller ships, ships inside ships inside ships. All while your trading empire autonomously rakes in profits to feed your ever expanding war machine, and your mining ships scour the systems half a galaxy away for valuable materials, all in real time.

Jesus Christ, the assembly cut is totally different than the finished product we got. No vehicles going about on Tatooine, 11:23, no large Cityscapes or huge battles. No Sith-troopers on Tatooine either. This was too ambitious to the bare bones the Knights of the Old Republic was when it got published. 12:52, look at this real-time scene, nothing like this happened in KOTOR 1... too depressing to watch knowing what might have been and yet, I loved both KOTOR 1 & 2. Given that what was first shown and what we got in the end was made by actual BioWare in its prime, I guess I can't really complain as they were top of the line Dev-team back then when they worked on this baby. Thank you for the video of a bygone era, MNH 2302. Subbed.

From what I heard, Casey Hudson did form a new game development firm and gathered a lot of his former BioWare colleagues. They are now working on a spiritual successor to Mass Effect, it's called Humanoid: Origin. I wish them all the best, as all good things do come to an end, but then again, hopefully they rise up to the new challenge as well. Fingers crossed for a good game down the line.
