Welcome to Hawaii… Part 4! I wish we could say that our final adventure for our “50 States in a Year” series went exactly as planned and was everything we dreamed it would be, but quite frankly… Nothing went as planned and it was far from what we had dreamed it would be. Due to torrential rains, a lot of what we had planned was closed, canceled, or not possible. That said, we knew that “the show must go on”, so we picked up our cameras and (attempted to pick up) our spirits and documented our day… the good, the bad, and the ugly. Spoiler alert… It was mostly the latter of the two! Lol… We were able to find the silver lining after a little pity partying and ended our day on a positive note in gratitude for the incredible memories that we made throughout our “50 States in a Year” journey. Aloha from Maui October 2023. I am so glad you got to experience Lahaina. We are still crying on the beach as we are now feeling defeat. Thank you for sharing your videos they are wonderful. I’ve been here 33 years and have experienced it all. I long for all the untarnished sunlit care free days pre 8/8/23. All of our hearts are broken. I hope some day you return to this beautiful place and enjoy the Hawaii we all knew and loved.

I had a bad experience in one of my trips. I went to Disney with “friends” but their behavior was awful the whole time and it was a lot of tension. I was lucky my best friend also came to that trip because at least we had each other. I learnt that the people you travel with is sooo important. I remember I just wanted that trip to end and be back home.
Went on a cruise to Hawaii and caught Covid. Found out while in Maui. Oh well, next time will be better!
We got robbed in Vietnam 🇻🇳 with a minute to go back to Australia a guy came on his bike was targeting a female to try but with no success looked at me as I had a man bag had all the Passports and money and mobile phones etc, we had to stay another week for us to leave Vietnam as we were Robbed on the weekend and the Australian Embassy wasn't open until the Monday then we had to stay and get another Passport new photo then a visa then another plane ticket back to Australia 🇦🇺 was awful experience but met some great people during that week extra we stayed in Vietnam 🇻🇳
Ahh, Matt and Nat...bad vacation experiences...there were 15,000 tourists in West Maui/Lahaina when the 2023 wildfire broke out, of the 99 people who died, only one was a tourist. Despite all the rain that accompanied your December in Hawaii Maui trip, you at least got to see the 170 year old Lahaina...even if you return for the rest of your bucket list, this is gone forever, so your videos are now a precious memory for those of us Islanders to look back on and remember what was and what part of our life did what where and when. Your video series did a nice job showcasing what we love about our islands...visit the big island of Hawaii and Kauai next time. If you had gone to Kualoa Ranch on the windward side of Oahu, there was the Jurassic Park tour...the movies were all filmed on Kauai (during the 1992 Hurricane Iniki) and Oahu...yes some experience choices there are pricey, but others are reasonable.
As to the prices of the "Hawaii" experience...it was all free at one time - pre 1990's. BUT visitors to the islands wouldn't listen to locals warnings about what they could and couldn't do and started to sue the state for THEIR stupid choices...ie, going to Sacred Falls during rain over the mountains and getting caught in a mud slide (no one goes into the mountains when there are heavy clouds over the Koolau mountains! EVER)..turning their back on the open sea with the waves coming in, getting injured, and then suing the state for not putting up signs to warn about the tide and waves...leaving their trash all over the sites instead of taking it with them...hiking in areas that say NO ADMITTANCE, getting lost and then have to be rescued...etc. The parks then had to hire people to clean up the messes, station "lifeguards", set up signage, warnings, and visitor centers with staffing to monitor the crowds, and manage unauthorized people filled BUSES that block off all the parking for the locals.....and this costs money! Locals no longer go to Waikiki unless they work there...we try to take visiting friends to sites that aren't on the "visitor" vlogs....visitors now have to make appointments for Haunama Bay because the shear numbers of visitors as well as the sunscreen worn by the visiting snorkelers nearly killed off the fish and coral reefs (sunscreen in the bay is now banned and tours only allowed on certain days of the week). After Covid, mainland workers discovered that they could work remotely and started to buy "vacation" properties in the islands driving the pricing so high that locals could no longer afford to live here. My next door neighbor decided to downsize and to move to town to be closer to his kids. He listed his house for $895,000 (the going rate around our neighborhood in 2020). A bidding war started with NO LOCAL people bidding, and it sold for $1.75 million dollars! Our whole neighborhood is now listed for over 1.5 million...the property taxes alone will more than likely drive more of the locals to leave....we bought our house in 1971 for $75,000, just for perspective. The prices of housing in Hawaii have been driven up by outsiders purposely outbidding locals...many developers. Federal law makes it illegal limit sales of business, homes, or land to non-locals, so you can see why many here would like to see Hawaii leave the union.
We love to show off our state...we enjoy people amazed at its beauty, but we would also like to be treated with respect and consideration, much like you did...and thank you for that. But I must say that many are not as wonderful and thoughtful as you are.
I think it's great to show the good times and the bad times. Travel doesn't always go the way you want it. Big ups to you guys putting it out there. Thumbs up!

I just have to say that my wife and I love your videos. We moved away from family & friends in Missouri when I got a new job in South Carolina. It was hard to be away from our loved ones, but we wanted to explore this new part of the US. We discovered you’re Greenville, SC video and immediately thought you guys were so much fun and we had to watch all the rest of your 50 states videos. You have definitely inspired us to explore new places we didn’t even have on our radar. Thank you for sharing this journey with all the ups & downs. Hey guys!! First and foremost, congratulations on visiting all 50 states this past year. I know it didn’t end the way you wanted it to, but this might’ve been a blessing in disguise. Life throws us challenges and adversity and reminds us that not everything goes as planned. And these are the things that makes us stronger and prepares us for the road ahead. I’m so proud of you guys for everything you’ve accomplished this past year and I know the future holds blue skies and brightest days for both of you. I’m so sorry you guys didn’t get to do all the things you wanted to (especially the luau) but this just gives you the encouragement to get back to Hawaii and check those things off your list. And since Cheri and I want to go back the too, who knows, we might bump into each other over a plate of roasted pig, mac salad and a Mai Tai. Hope you guys are well and staying safe. Yea, it was a wild one for sure! And not in a good way! Lol… But for the most part, our time in Hawaii was good (Oahu was good to us). We’ll definitely have to take a redemption trip to Maui though! Lol… Thanks man! We really appreciate it!😊

Never apologise for the weather. I just discovered your guys' videos today and have literally been binge watching. Your enthusiam and energy, both individually and as a couple, shines through in every single one. I'm really sorry you didn't get to have the Maui experience you hoped for. I was lucky enough to have the opposite experience (my wife and I went in June which helped), but I've been unlucky on several holidays throughout my life. Look at it this way, you now have a really good reason to go back (in summer ;-)) and do all the things you never got to do the first time.
I'm from Ireland originally and on our trip home over this coming Christmas I'm taking my wife on the Ring of Kerry for the first time, I'm sure it's going to piss down on top of us the entire time, while you guys got to enjoy it all in glorious sunshine!
Hi Matt&Nat! This is Kurt&Sarah with Ride Zion in Utah. 50 states in a year wow! Amazing!! You guys are so fun to watch and thanks for being so relatable. I can’t wait to see where you go next!✈️🌎 Also, awesome to see Angel’s Landing on your recap. So here’s a little travel disaster we had once. One time for our anniversary we decided to rent a nice home in Park City. Well, not only did the house not have any running hot water so we had to cold showers, the claw foot bathtub we were looking forward to had a thick dirty ring around the tub, the sheets on the bed were matted with cat hair, and there was a used dirty sock under the sheets! And to top it all off with the ultimate cherry on top🍒 the owner falsely accused us of stealing a cereal bowl from her kitchen cabinet and then threatened to call the cops on us. It’s funny now when we think back on it but it wasn’t then.😩😂
That was an epic Wowie Maui Owie! I felt your pain and so glad you made the best of it despite the disappointments because of the storm. I'm just grateful you made it through without any major mishaps and just a broken boogie board!!
Thank you for taking me to all 50 states with you. I binged watched many of your videos and it helped me re-live some of the great times I had when I traveled all 48 states in my camper/rv. (I flew to Alaska & Hawaii to make all 50 states.)

We didn't go to a luau until our fifth trip. When we finally went, a tropical storm came ashore and drenched everything. The dancers continued on like troopers. It's hard to eat when your plate is filled with rain water.
Awww, That's too bad your time in Maui was not as planned as you would like...needless to say I really appreciate your positivity in this video. trust me, I don't think I would be as positive as you if it was me. My family and I were just in Maui from 7/20 to 7/28 and we were lucky to have the perfect weather for our stay..your lovely personality really came through in this video. What a great accomplishment on visiting 50 states in a year. Keep going !!!!

Great video! My Mom booked an Alaskan Cruise thru a travel agent. As part of the package we had to take a bus ride from Seattle to Vancouver. The bus company took so long dropping people off that we got there just as the ship was pulling away. Worst feeling in the world! My Mom literally had a melt down crying and screaming. Luckily, the cruise company worked with us and we caught another ship 2 days later. Don't know if I ever do a cruise again. Give me too much anxiety.

Oh, wow! I’ve never seen Hawaii like that, ever! So sorry your trip went south. Normally Hawaii is so beautiful and sunny with only light afternoon showers. But like they say, can’t predict the weather! So sorry your trip didn’t turn out like you wanted it to.

You always get terrible weather when you travel! I think it's a good idea to warn other people where you are heading to in advance, so they don't get caught in the bad weather too 🤣 Joking aside, your still always seem to enjoy where you are no matter what the weather does! Matt and Nat, through 37 years of marriage, my wife and I have visited 47 states. Through your wonderful videos, we were able to relive a lot of wonderful memories of our travels, and we got a few ideas from you for our last three states. We were saddened watching this video, because we had a great week in Maui.
Looking forward to the next video, and if it's an announcement on foreign travel, we hope you start with Italy. That was our favorite.

Maui is the best if Maui is the island experience you want and enjoy. I don’t have a best island when it comes to Hawaii but I do have my favorite parts of each island, as far as luau’s go they’re fun but they’re all pretty much the same thing some better than others. The trip experience you had in Maui left you something to go back for.
What a bummer, Maui is absolutely gorgeous, I would highly recommend to go back during April to May and Sept to Nov. I’ve always gone during June and July and it’s really hot but weather is fantastic.

We went to Oahu in june for my daughter's graduation present from us. 6 days in of our 9 day stay, we had to take her to the emergency room with enterocolitis. The last 3 days of our vacation were spent in the condo. We were grateful, however that we had booked heavy on the front end of the trip, so the last few days were supposed to be relaxing days and shopping days. We did come home with a pretty hefty emergency room bill as if we had not spent enough money in hawaii already!

That’s an insane amount of water. But even though many things were closed you guys pulled together a great end to your 50 states. Thank you both and we can’t wait to see what’s next! You do you but just an FYI for your viewers. It is really not a good idea to go in the water after a those kind of storm. Most local kids know better than to go in the muddy waters. More likely to be bitten by sharks, way more random rip currents. Way more likely to get bacterial infections due to dirty run off and possible sewage overflow. Especially when power go out for a significant period of time especially in the Kihei/Wailea area.
I feel a little sad that the 50 states vlog has come to a end but I'm excited to see what's next. I hope you get to wear that Hawaii dress you bought for a luau one day. I have a few dresses hanging in my closet for special occasions that haven't happened yet lol. Thanks for taking us along on your journey! ❤️❤️
Ugh, sorry you had so many issues with your planned activities. Usually we always feel like the unexpected “not going according to plan” bits ends up being the most memorable/our favorite part of a trip. But I can see how in this particular situation, considering how many specific activities you had planned, and that you’d already been rolling with the punches & “chins-up” for a few days, that it could really break you down at some point. But hey, the bright side is you accomplished your 50 states goal and had a super-unique trip. I mean, a blizzard warning in Hawaii, come on! Unfortunately all of these unusual weather patterns are getting more and more common with climate change, but you did a great job of making the most of it. And you still showed some beautiful footage!
Just watched this one. Sad that your trip didn’t work out which would be so disappointing. Even sadder that Maui is basically gone now. :(
