Florian Glemser is a student of Grigory Gruzman at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. He was awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of an opera transcription by Richard Wagner/ Franz Liszt.

À la fin de l’année 1858, Liszt fut bouleversé par la lecture du premier acte de Tristan und Isolde , dont Wagner lui avait envoyé les épreuves. En 1867, deux ans après la création de l’opéra à Munich (10 juin 1865), il adapta La Mort d’amour d’Isolde , ultime épisode de l’acte III. Signe de sa déférence, il n’écrivit pas une paraphrase ni une fantaisie, mais une transcription qui, au moyen de trémolos, d’arpèges, de larges accords et de la superposition de plans sonores, conserve la substance de la scène dramatique. Toutefois, la densité de l’écriture wagnérienne ne lui permettant pas d’être entièrement transposée au piano, Liszt écarta une grande partie de la ligne vocale. Idée pertinente, car l’orchestre joue la totalité des lignes mélodiques, que double par moments seulement la déclamation d’Isolde, extatique et passionnée. Au moment où Liszt transcrivit La Mort d’Isolde , son amitié pour l’auteur de Tristan s’était pourtant relâchée. Sa fille Cosima avait quitté son mari Hans von Bülow pour vivre avec Wagner. Si Liszt soutint Bülow (par ailleurs premier interprète de sa Sonate en si mineur et de Tristan und Isolde ), il continua d’admirer la musique de Wagner et de la défendre. En 1883, il composa R.W.-Venezia et Am Grabe Richard Wagners (Sur la tombe de Richard Wagner), deux hommages pianistiques au musicien qui venait de disparaître. Trois ans plus tard, il assista au festival de Bayreuth. C’est dans cette ville qu’il s’éteignit le 31 juillet, quelques jours après avoir vu Tristan und Isolde , représenté au Festspielhaus pour la première fois.

En écoutant cela, on comprend mieux pourquoi Florian Glemser a obtenu un prix spécial pour la meilleure interprétation de cette page magistrale, transcription de Franz Liszt de La Mort d’Isolde de Richard Wagner. On en sort pas indemne et totalement bouleversé.... !!! 🎼
On reste admiratif par la hauteur de vue de ce jeune homme né en 1990 dans une famille de musicien avec un père pianiste qui lui donne ses premiers cours dans une école pour enfants surdoués. La presse et le public décrivent ses concerts comme des expériences d'une profondeur musicale particulière.

He studied with Gruzman??? He's an amazing professor. A couple of friends study with him.

And I hope not to sound bad, but I know Gruzman is good, but he just takes them when they're already build. So, I don't think Gruzman really prepared him for everything.

I just don't like the repeated notes at 5:20. Is that the only way it can be written?
Yes it's written that way. But Liszt wrote an "ossia" (alternate version) on the score at this special point.
It needs to played with way more force, like in Hamelin's recording on youtube
The two other ways liszt wrote you could play it with just one chord instead of repeated in the right hand or you play the one chord and do an arpeggio going down the piano in the right hand I believe.
I know it's been 3 years, but in case it's still relevant to you, there is another edition that writes it as a tremolo instead of repeated chords. It creates a nice version of the texture that is a little less percussive. I don't know of any recordings though of the performer playing it with the tremolos.
