    It doesn't matter if you are on1 or on2, if you are counting "123,567" you are dancing on the same rhythm, but just breaking differently. If you dance on "234,678" them you are dancing to the loud slap to the double hit and technically that would be dancing to the "rhythm" that one might say aka dancing Mambo or Son style. Great video regardless.

      I dance on1, but find it much harder to make some routines to particular songs, because they are clearly built on2 - eg. El Gran Varón. I do want to learn on2, which one do you dance?

    I learned on-1 in San Francisco. California is (was) primarily an on-1 dance community. My first motivation to learn to dance on-2 was to learn something different. But I was also well aware that the better followers in my area preferred to dance on-2. Being able to dance on-2 meant I could dance with more advanced partners more often. Dancing with someone more experienced can help make you a better dancer.
    Now that I live in Bangkok I find that being able to dance on-1 and on-2 is advantageous. This is a mixed dance community because there are many people from many countries.

    I teach both Salsa and Mambo, but if some dancers claim to feel it more on "2" why is there so many people lost and so many videos trying to explain it and yet no one can clearly explain it?
    Next time try explaining the difference with a conga player next to you.

    It really doesn't matter if you dance on 1, 2, or 3. BUT, it's probably much better to LEARN to dance on 2. Why? Because you will learn to hear the music much, much better than if you learn to dance on 1. Dancing starts with the music; the better you hear and understand the music, the better you will dance, and with greater musicality. If you learn to dance on 2, it should not be difficult to switch to 1, whenever necessary or whenever you feel like it. But if you learn to dance on 1, it's usually much more difficult to switch to 2. Dance on 1, 2, or 3, it really doesn't matter; but a good dancer should be able to dance equally well on 1, 2, or 3; and to do that you should LEARN to dance salsa on 2.

    Great video, I love on2, but for me the real challenge is that any teacher I meet uses different styles (somebody stepping old mambo 234, somebody NY style 123, somebody &23, somebody holding the 4&, somebody traveling on 4&, not to mention the turns).
    On LA anybody is stepping and turning pretty much in a similar way, while on2 there are plenty of different variations from NY-ET style. It would not be that difficult for me to learn and dance on2 if there was one common on2 (eg NY-ET style) but 4 months on, 3 different teachers, and I still don't know how to step. From a side that gives flavor and connection to the music but from the others it makes things more complicated to who wants to learn and dance on2 and therefore make on2 more popular.

    • @krambodance3377
      @krambodance3377  4 года назад +1

      It just shows that salsa has many colors and faces. Freedom and no real limits when it comes to dancing to the rhythm. Maybe that's why everyone has a different flavor to it. I love to mix my basic from classic on2 to a power on 2 through a palladium on2 or just mess around and dance on1 and on3 hahaha.

    • @melphiss
      @melphiss 4 года назад

      @@krambodance3377 it's a balance between making a dance rich and multi-faced and making a dance accessible and popular. IMO the way on2 is tought is more successful at the former, LA/Casino at the latter.

    Thanks a lot for the explanation- very helpful & well thorough way to deal with that eternal dilemma among Salseros- a few questions for you: I first learnt salsa On2 during my teens years, and practiced all the way to my early 20s - then I literally stopped dancing -a complete halt for another decade - then I decided few years ago to re-learn it properly and the classes are On1 - BUT I've noticed & been told when I do Social Dancing, ((if the salsa rhythm is fast, my body goes automatically On2 )) - So the question is - how troubling/uncomfortable is that to happen when the follower is dancing On1? Is there a way to draw a line to control that? Is there a middle ground where dancing On1 & On2 can co-exist without clashing? Thanks kindly :)

    Thanks for your insights! Question 1: Why do you say that On2 is right foot first, different from On1, and at the end you switch to left first again? Question 2: Why do people tend to think that dancing is about doing step patterns?

    • @krambodance3377
      @krambodance3377  3 года назад

      I think I might answer your second question with this video about the steps vs personality: ruclips.net/video/tu-HJmxQiNg/видео.html
      In On2 we always start with the right foot forward and the left back. However those are just guidelines not absolute quantities. You can play and break them if you like. Try both and feel the difference.
      Good luck dancing and practising!

    Hey patchy, there is no such thing as this is the best way. As a good dancer you need to open the doors and let people in! Not creep them out. Any dance at the beat and timing is good. Don't contradict your self ! It seems you still in the journey to become a teacher

      Well, when Cubans dance Casino they usually do it On1; when dancing Son they usually do it On2 (really counting On2 if they do count: 2/3/4 - 6/7/8). However, both type of dance could be danced on both times...

      I'm from New York also and I learned On2 also. I had a different problem which was when I go to socials I noticed that a lot of women didn't know how to dance On2 so guys wouldn't ask them to dance so they sit there watching everyone having fun.So I took it upon myself to learn to dance on1. It was a little difficult at first but with a little practice in time you'll be just fine. Now I have more fun because I have twice as many ladies to dance with and I am making someone have a good time

  • @MrBooguis
    @MrBooguis 7 лет назад +1

    No but just no ...
    The rythmn of the salsa is not the tumbao, it's 1/2/3 & 5/6/7 so ... basicely, you count on1 when you dance on2 ...
    They are few percusion, you have the campana the timbales too and they are on1. That's a fake idea to say that you dance more on rythm on2 ...

    • @krambodance3377
      @krambodance3377  7 лет назад +1

      +Thibaud Favreau I see your point but please tell me: what happens when you get the tumbao out? Isn't it the beating heart of salsa music? There is salsa without timbales and without the campana but if there's no congas... and when I dance I have to know where my 1 is but I need to feel he beat and the rhythm played by congas in the first place. So I would never risk to say that 1.2.3. Is the rhythm of salsa. It's just the measure of rhythm. We need measures to understand and tame any rhythm. Thank you for watching 😊

    • @MrBooguis
      @MrBooguis 7 лет назад

      Maybe ... I don't know ... because if you take colombian salsa, I don't hear the tumbao ... they are so many instruments ... (and i began to dance On1 so yes, it's not so clear for me) so for me you can't say that your are more in a musicality way to dance for this kind of songs ...
      So traditionally, the salsa come from the son (and other) and they danced on2, but now, they are a lot of salsa song in wich you don't hear any more the tumbao ... I understand.I respect that ! But just be fair !
      I dance On2 too now, so i have no angry against mambo. Just I hear too many times the same thing. With this kind of speech, a lot of people think that mambo dancers are arrogants !

  • @cesarmendoza1702
    @cesarmendoza1702 3 года назад +1

    @4:10 I don't agree. Dancing on1 it's quick quick quick and not quick quick slow. The timing is the same for counts 1,2,3 then your body slowly moves to step on5. I think you're great on 2 teacher but not accurate on1.

    • @krambodance3377
      @krambodance3377  3 года назад

      Thank you Cesar for you comment. My quick quick slow analogy is referring to the basic salsa count where on 3 (doesn't matter if its on 1 or on2) there is a half note step which you can translate to slow comparing to the quarter 1 and 2 steps. I hope this claryfies my view. Thank you for watching 😊

And I can do the same ones that are use on2, original salsa on2 don’t step on1. This is nee York style.

    @TJAlbert55 6 лет назад +4

    Well I guess this might be helpful to someone who's already experienced. But if you're just learning and trying to decide which style to start with, this was pretty awful and confusing. You seem to rush through the key concepts, you never actually slow down or exaggerate points. It's like somebody teaching math but talking like the student already knows how to do it. Very poor explanation.

    • @krambodance3377
      @krambodance3377  6 лет назад +3

      This is partially right I guess. The video is for someone who is already experienced in on1, so true. I'm not showing you the differences to make you decide which style you should choose. The point was to help you to "switch" or to build a positive approach when you start learning on2. In the end this is just a quick helper and not a full curriculum. You should go to school and study. I'm here to give some pointers and maybe give you some inspiration. This is what I try to do. Thank you for your comment.
