    Absolutely true about the conga and the clave. I think the piano is tricky as in many songs it doesn't stress the first beat. The cowbell often gives you the first and the third.

    It takes time to understand be patient, it take time and practice. It's like learn a new language, at the beginning it's hard to understand but little by little the ear starts recognizing the changes of the sounds.

    Joel, How do you distinguish between the 2 and the 6 in the conga? I can hear the 2 and 6 clearly but not sure whether it is 2, 6 , 2, 6 or 6, 2. 6, 2, etc.

    I am a drummer, and in Salsa music i always listened to the "offbeats", trying to avoid the "one", but feeling it. In fact it seems only the piano plays on the downbeat, while most other instruments, even the bass and vocals, are missing the one. Thats different to brasilian music, i.e. But what i wanted to say, when i had my first rehearsals with Salsa dancing, i found it much easier to listen to the piano and the bass (if you can hear it), instead on all those many rhythm instruments, while dancing. Its giving more relaxed freedom in my opinion.

    Joel really enjoying your videos I dance salsa on 2 here in Sunrise Florida and I noticed that beginners have trouble understanding what to do after the Cun-Cun sound because all of the instruction is focused on the two and on the six if people think of the Cun-Cun sound as the go sound meaning that as soon as you hear that you take step number one in order to get two step number two just a thought on my part it helps me hear the music when I'm dancing

    Thank you for your comment, to distinguish the first part of the dancer count we using other instruments like Piano, clave, etc.
    Once we detect the 1st beat of the 8 count we will know when is the 2 and 6.
    Please search for Dance With Feeling I have more videos there! =)

  • @JoelSalsaNY
    @JoelSalsaNY  11 лет назад +3

    It's a different feeling when you count than when you only listen to the instruments, try to follow the music without counting your salsa steps and follow the sounds with your steps. Don't give up you will see how one day will click and then you will be able to have the feeling in your dancing as well.
    Joel

    Clave should be the first one and is the most important, clave set the rhythm of salsa. In this case he explained the rumba clave, which is not the most frequent in salsa. Any way the explanation is really good, I suggest it to find the bass sound it will be the strong beat, and the " Tumbao" .

    • @Luxsomar
      @Luxsomar 6 лет назад +2

      No, he played son clave, not rumba clave. But you are correct that rumba clave is not common in salsa music.

    this is one of the best videos I've seen so far, my question is, can I use the first sound,, can I use the first sound, the piano sound to dance on2 do I have to always use the Conga sound to dance on2? I just seem to have an easier time catching the piano song over the conga... I am currently transitioning into dancing on2

    Good day Joel, the most important instrument in what they call Salsa is La clave that Origin is Cuban, also the conga that was created in Cuba. There wouldn’t be salsa without La Clava ! I think you should mention the true origins of the instrument because they are Cuban Origins, remember without either instrument there is no Salsa

    ¿ No tienen este mismo video hablado en español ? ... ( La gran mayoría de lo salseros es hispano-hablante ) ... Los que no queremos utilizar el idioma Inglés, tenemos que estar pendientes de la traducción mediante subtítulos, lo que nos hace perder la atención de la parte musical, que es lo esencial. ( De todas maneras, felicitaciones a Joel Salsa, pues es muy interesante el tema planteado, dada la importancia del ritmo o pulso en la salsa )

    The conga beat pattern you used is a four count, so its the 2 and 4 that you counted and not the 2 and 6. To have an eight count you have to use two patterns of congas beat, so then you've got the 2-4-6-8. Anyway i like the video. Greetings

    • @jesscast5122
      @jesscast5122 6 лет назад

      Well, 2468 still keeps the timing.....
      But for Dancers the instruction is that they have keep the beats of PAUSE 4 & 8
      (6 steps within 8 beats of Music) this is the REAL Problem of Dancers, learning.
      not the Music...............

    3:07 and this is where you lost me. How is the conga slap here considered to be on 2 and 6, and not on 3 and 7?

    • @JapharDK
      @JapharDK 2 года назад +1

      Because the conga player starts on 8, and not on 1. I get the confusion. I've been playing a bit of salsa percussion myself, and I still get mixed up about this sometimes.
      It seems to be an essential cultural difference between western music and i.e. Cuban music, that they take for granted, that you know this.
      I wish that the people making these videos would piont this out, or maybe let the conga figure start on 1 instead of on 8 (or if you only count 4, on 4).
