To prevent your design from stretching. Double-click your smart object ( rectangle/cylinder ) , select the crop tool and increase the canvas size on all sides. Then place your design on top and press control + s to save OR ( command + s ) on a Mac. Then go back to your mock-up to see the final results.
This does seem to stretch out the design so I think one good work around would be to compress the image horizontally before applying it to the cylinder shape. It won’t be perfect but more than enough to convey the look of the mock-up if are simply trying to present the product.

It's not necessary to create a shape layer and use the embeded tools to set the image in the cylinder but instead of using the shape use of the image direct and wrap it to set in the cylinder.
there is no cilinder in my PS but it works i just have to adjust the picture by hand and had to press the eye icon on the red layer and save again because my design has transparent parts but good tutorial simple fast and works so thanks! :)
When I double click on the smart object, I don't see the filled square (red). I see transparent background and the cylinder shape in red. When I paste the image I get the whole canvas and the bottle does not transpose with the shape, why can it be?
How can I make the cylinder if the image of the object is rotated? and I have created the rectangle at that angle. choosing cylinder makes it difficult to fit it to the image.
