the funny thing is, that the english subtitles are so wrong.....^^ they have the wrong context, usw a very false tanslation etc. the engineer at the beginning who says in the subtitles that they should cut of the extra fuel says in german something different. they should look out for the lockings of the external half open fuel bunkers and their fuel level. later he calls someone who goes and makes a dumb joke a lunatic. in german the one who goes by doesnt say: a good way to burn fuel. he says: das schafft was weg. if you translate it to english it would be something more like thats burning a lot. and the engineer replies with: blöde sau. in english not lunatic but more like asshole the list is long and every scene has its mistakes etc
Of all the background music in this film this is my favorite. I like how the score for this scene interweaves the elements suggesting the anticipation of the hunt, the throbbing of the diesels and the crash of the waves.
I watched this movie when I was five with my Dad. Ever since then, I have become an amateur historian of the U-Boat war. Greatest movie ever. For those that are gamers, strongly recommend Silent Hunter III and IV. Check them out in youtube videos. The graphics and gameplay is unbelievable. White knuckles on the keyboard during a depth charge attack. Couldn't imagine the real thing......
Same here bro. I went to the German army when I was 19 but I’m to tall for submarines :/ but I inked the sword fish on my shoulder instead haha this movie changed my life I think !
Those are called "indication cocks", and are valves connected to the cylinder of the engine; they serve three purposes: To make sure that there is no water (from condensation) inside the cylinder before starting the engine; take meassurements of pressure (with a manometer attached to them) and, as in this case, just check that the piston is firing correctly. Good movie! Cheers.
I've been inside the set in Munich, at Bavaria Film Studios. It's even smaller and much more cramped in person. I remember being in the control room, standing in the centre with my arms outstretched. There was only about six inches of room on either side of my arms.
Absolutely...without a doubt this is one of the finest, most thrilling and emotionally involving war movies ever made. Watch it in German with english subtitles.
@DanRage47 The Crew never was supposed to be 24. It always used to be at least 42 Men on the Type VII A; the Type VII C had at least 44 and was later increased to 52. A few have been refitted to Flak-U-Boats with three Anti Aircraft Guns which required even more Men. But these were rather botched Modifications which were quickly withdrawn as they turned out to be Rubbish (unsurprisingly), so there arent any official Numbers around but the Crew was at least 56-58. Anyway, Point is that the Type VII always were designed for Hot Bunking and the increasing Number of Men aboard ment that some had to sleep in Hammocks suspended from the "Ceiling", as depicted in the Movie. The Ratings Accomodation where all this happend also was the Forward Torpedo Room, hence they were sitting on the two Spare Torpedoes which were stored below the Flooring Plates (not a Deck because Decks are structurally integral) and sleeping below the four Torpedoes which were stored right behind the four Forward Torpedo Tubes, ready to be reloaded within Minutes. Removing the Bunks in the Torpedo Room was one of the Attack Preparations when hunting a Convoy.
1:11 - the translation is slightly off. What he actually says is, "to make some room here". The extra torpedoes were stored in the crew quarters; three sailors had to share a bunk until those extra torpedoes were gone; after that, a few more bunks could be set up instead, so that "only" two sailors would have to share one bunk.
This was a truly amazing movie. You really got a sense for the unique type pf person it took to sail in one of these things. The cramped quarters, the heat, the smells, the sense of hopelessness and desperation and one of the most ironic endings I've ever seen in a war movie.
When the U boat dives the man run to the front of the boat to help it balance down faster. The merchant seaman that they sunk never get awarded medals as they are not naval military. Lest we forget.
@@samanli-tw3id They got snubbed too. Weren’t accorded veteran status. Even though more merchant men died at sea in WW2 than any branch in the US Armed Forces during the war.
ID LIKE TO DEDICATE THIS SCENE FROM DAS BOOT TO MY MOTHER CHRISTINA..ITS HER FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE...SHE REALLY LOVED IT....ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC...I LOVE YOU MOM...YOUR SON
It's my favourite submarine movie. It's all about men, their ship and their task. Not about politic or idealogical stuff. They just try to do their job and go back home safe. They have to fight for their country but don't want to die for Nazi stupid things. Most of the crewmen don't care of Nazi ideology.
Hitler's "Eagles Nest" further up the mountain from his "Bergoff" survived the war. It's called "Kehlsteinhaus" and is currently a restaurant. The back up generator there is powered by a U boat engine, it is still serviced and still runs to this day. There are vids of it on RUclips.
TelemachX Your Irish mate is right. I always watch this film in German, and read the subtitles. It does not work any other way. A fantastic film, and the ending really shows the futility and irony of war.
Yea until 1943 when the allies started using airplanes and destroyers with great effect and decimated the uboats. 237 uboats sunk in 1943 compared to 35 in 1941. 241 uboats sunk in 1944 and 153 sunk in 45. There was literally only a handful left by the end of the war. The uboats became outdated almost overnight. Now if the e-boats would have seen service, it would have been different. Try reading "Iron Coffins" by uboat captain Herbert Werner and educate yourself.
I went to see hte premiere of the movie in ann arbor, michingan in 1982, the hall was full of WWII veterans from the area, some were crying when the movie ended, it predated saving private ryan in realism by some 20 years....
Ah, the german U-boats. A marvel of human engineering! Or as someone said; the germans made the best weapons the world had ever seen, for the worst cause ever fought for. I just wish I could sail aboard one just to know what it feels like.
Anyone who has served on subs will tell you that Das Boot is the most realistic submarine movie ever made. It is one of perhaps a dozen movies that I have ever watched more than once and I have viewed it at least three times.
I love the cheesy english subtitles. The captain swears several times in the film and the English subtitles are "Oh No!". And that engineer in this clip did NOT say 'Lunatic' :)
The Films you postet are good, but none of them let me feel like you were in the movie. Das Boot gives a brilliant atmosphere, none of the other Films do. ;)
I love this film over 30 years, and it is nice that so many actors stars in germany, with right! Herbert Grönemeyer the war correspondent for example is a great musik artist . Look at "Mensch" Herbert Grönemeyer.
I saw this movie after it was dubbed in English. Would have been nice to see it in the German version with sub-titles. Had a friend who served on U.S. diesel subs. He said the most memorable things about them was the pervasive smell of diesel oil. When he was in the theater watching the film he could smell diesel oil! An U.S.reviewer said a German sub is stalkng a convoy and a British destroyer is stalking the sub. You're for the destroyer, right? Not if you're watching this film!
Agreed. He very well could have padded his record. I still definitely think it is worth reading however as you pointed out as I believe there is much to learn about the battle of the Atlantic that one may not have previously known.
The actual patrol when the naval war correspondent was on board was actually quite a pleasant trip sort of, only minor damage from a swordfish torpedo plane with at least one ship sunk :DD
if you want to just hear the audio you can type in "Das Boot - U-96" the video of the officers eating the lemons should be the one you are looking for.
I love the way how in this scene the sounds of the diesel engines syncs in time perfectly with the music
I like how this scene appreciates the machinists. Very important people on every boat
The Boat which crashes tthrough the waves, rdy for the hunt...especially with the soundtrack..truly epic!

When this first came out on DVD long ago, I never once switched to the English Dub audio ever.
IMDRanged Best way to watch it.
the funny thing is, that the english subtitles are so wrong.....^^
they have the wrong context, usw a very false tanslation etc.

the list is long and every scene has its mistakes etc
The English dub is actually pretty good - all the main actors spoke English so they had them dub their own lines.
I do the same, when i watch japanese anime XD
Of all the background music in this film this is my favorite. I like how the score for this scene interweaves the elements suggesting the anticipation of the hunt, the throbbing of the diesels and the crash of the waves.
Also the intro to this scenes, where he sits on the periscope, is a great contrast and makes it even better. And its a bit silly XD
UBOAT hitting those waves like that, with the soundtrack... badass

Submarine on the surface in rough weather was BRUTAL ! My Dad was on One in 45 !
I've been inside the set in Munich, at Bavaria Film Studios. It's even smaller and much more cramped in person. I remember being in the control room, standing in the centre with my arms outstretched. There was only about six inches of room on either side of my arms.
Fantastic Movie . Those boats, that life , that era . They all shared that regardless of Fealty . Can you imagine it today ?
fucking awesome movie!
agreed! Best! Im in love with Ario and Piligrim
Absolutely...without a doubt this is one of the finest, most thrilling and emotionally involving war movies ever made.
Watch it in German with english subtitles.
when i see some scenes from "Das Boot" i always want to play SilentHunter 3.. :)
1:00 dude was just chilling on 2 torpedoes.

THE BEST FILM OF SUBMARINE EVER DONE!

One of my Favorite scenes 🤙😍
Working on a U-Boat wouldn't be a cake-walk at the best of times, but being an engine-room mechanic must've been a different level of suffering
Being on a U-Boat is a differnet level of suffering
This was a truly amazing movie. You really got a sense for the unique type pf person it took to sail in one of these things. The cramped quarters, the heat, the smells, the sense of hopelessness and desperation and one of the most ironic endings I've ever seen in a war movie.
una de las peliculas mas chingonas de toda la historia.
2:06 that 80's audio quality is ridiculously charming
One of the BEST movies of all time period!
the best war film ever made!!!!
Me too. This is perhaps the best scene in the film. The music gives you a sense of speed and action that will soon happen.
On ne fera jamais mieux que ce chef d'œuvre.
When the U boat dives the man run to the front of the boat to help it balance down faster.
The merchant seaman that they sunk never get awarded medals as they are not naval military.
Lest we forget.
What about US Merchant Marine?
@@samanli-tw3id They got snubbed too. Weren’t accorded veteran status. Even though more merchant men died at sea in WW2 than any branch in the US Armed Forces during the war.
R.I.P. Friedrich Grade (1916-2023), L.I. auf U96.
Eine der besten Szenen aus dem Film. Immer wieder gut!
ID LIKE TO DEDICATE THIS SCENE FROM DAS BOOT TO MY MOTHER CHRISTINA..ITS HER FAVORITE SCENE IN THE MOVIE...SHE REALLY LOVED IT....ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC...I LOVE YOU MOM...YOUR SON
damit hier platz wiiirrrrdddd
seen it about 20 times, read the book twice, and got the normal version, the directors cut and the short series
It's my favourite submarine movie. It's all about men, their ship and their task. Not about politic or idealogical stuff. They just try to do their job and go back home safe. Absolut einer der besten Antikriegsfilme die es gibt.
This is the best movie I have ever seen!

Finally! Someone with enough courtesy to put subtitles on clips of Das Boot on RUclips!
Danke!
Einer der besten Filme die ich je gesehen hab.
I love the music in this bit so much.Fantastic soundtrack.
In addition to the U-boats already mentioned which are on display in Chicago and Kiel there is U-2540 in Bremerhaven.
Greatest documentary ever made?
TelemachX
Your Irish mate is right.
I always watch this film in German, and read the subtitles. It does not work any other way.
A fantastic film, and the ending really shows the futility and irony of war.
Great scenes and especially the engines I find them facinating.
u-boat on the hunt....what a movie.
god i started watching this movie at 12.00 and now its 4.00am. One of the best movies i ever watched.
Yea until 1943 when the allies started using airplanes and destroyers with great effect and decimated the uboats. 237 uboats sunk in 1943 compared to 35 in 1941. 241 uboats sunk in 1944 and 153 sunk in 45. You could not say it more right. I love this film, it is the best warmovie.

I think that it is the best movie of all categories
This is the best movie ever made about WWII..I need to see it again.

Das Boot ist eines meiner bevorzugten Filme aller Zeiten.
Just an awe inspiring film in every way.
Ah, the german U-boats. A marvel of human engineering! Or as someone said; the germans made the best weapons the world had ever seen, for the worst cause ever fought for. I just wish I could sail aboard one just to know what it feels like.
This movie really shows some things, look how the dedicated engineers are just minding their "diesels" it is really realistic.
defo one o the best war films ever made i think even better than private ryan.
this is the best u-boat movie ever!!
Immer noch Hammer der Film.Habe den Directors Cut.Nur Geil und die Musik geht voll unter die Haut.Ein Meisterwerk.
Anyone who has served on subs will tell you that Das Boot is the most realistic submarine movie ever made. It is one of perhaps a dozen movies that I have ever watched more than once and I have viewed it at least three times.

this is one of the movies i've ever seen
he controlls the culor of the flame. so he can see if the machine is running good or not.
Checking the ignition in the cylinders.

The tune is from the soundtrack, called 'Konvoi'. You can also find it on youtube, just search for 'Das Boot Konvoi'.
that was "in den Diesel" ... means "lets go to the Engine room" :D
the best u-boat movie ever made!
The Films you postet are good, but none of them let me feel like you were in the movie. Das Boot gives a brilliant atmosphere, none of the other Films do. ;)

The best naval movie ever.
One of the first movie where was used a steady cam. With talent
NeverStop no Steadycam! All handheld! ;-)
40,000 of these BRAVE men went to sea. 30,000 never came back. Please don't condem them!
