      The engines aren't really whats keeping the plane in the air. They just thrust it forward. If all the engines were to go out, the plane would still be flying. It would not maintain altitude, but it would be glidable to a place where it can land. I don't recall any incident where a plane has fallen out of the sky because the engines quit. In fact, they pretty much all landed somewhere. As for the wings, they are actually being pressed upward by the air, which generates the lift in order to fly. So the wings breaking off isn't going to happen.

    FWIW, on the long-haul routes I care about (ex Eastern Europe to the US), LOT's business class is always priced significantly cheaper than the competition (bar Finnair). If other airlines, like LH or AF, charge ~$4k from an Eastern European capital, LOT will charge $2-2.5k. So even though the product may be outdated, it's still a flat bed and it is priced fairly.
    I was curious to hear about the cabin heat. Previous reviewers complained that it was very hot in the LOT-operated Dreamliners.

    The best part of this mostly outdated seat is the very wide footrest. Most of the more modern hard products have these very narrow foot wells, the additional privacy notwithstanding. Flew LOT between Singapore and London and the cuisine could only be described as eclectic and lacking choice.

    • @4evertrue830
      @4evertrue830 2 года назад +6

      The pull down shades in the old version are made of plastic and carry a lot of additional weight.I think the reason for it is to reduce weight so the aircraft can be more fuel efficient in the air.

    • @greyshark3478
      @greyshark3478 2 года назад +4

      @@4evertrue830 True, but that's not the point. The issue Josh and other people have with these windows is that the crew decide whether they are dimmed or not. So if you want to look over the window you can't, because the crew decided to dim it. The passenger should have full control over them all the time, except take off/landing of course.

    • @Guerry-3
      @Guerry-3 2 года назад

      Good point. I whole heartedly agree! Although I have never flown on a 787, I have seen videos of the degrees of window shading on the aircraft. Even in its darkest position, I was still able to view out the window during daylight hours. Nevertheless, on overseas flights to and from the US, there are still fascinating and entertaining things to see enroute, when the IFE, reading, etc. become boring.

    • @spongebubatz
      @spongebubatz 2 года назад

      I agree, it just seems like an overly complicated solution for something that’s already as simple as it can get. While I love the technology behind it and see the advantages of it, the fact that the crew can control the shades is a real downside for me. Luckily my crew didn’t do that on the two Dreamliner flights I had, but if they did I’d be pissed

    • @mojabaka
      @mojabaka 2 года назад

      It‘s cool to play around with the buttons for 1 minute, but then it gets boring lol. In my case, I didn‘t really care that the crew decides to dim it because they only dimmed it over Siberia at night, where you can‘t see anything anyway. I guess on some airlines they dim it during the day? That is really stupid.

    Great Review Josh! I flew LOT recently for the first time (to Asia in business class), and honestly I was impressed with them. The cabin may be outdated, but you get what you pay for. On certain long-haul flights - if you book well in advance you can secure cheap fares e.g.1900 EUR in business class to Asia. Which in some cases is nearly 50% less than what you pay with other European/Gulf carriers. I don't think one can therefore complain about their product when LOT offers such attractive fares. Now if the fare was around the same price as the other carriers - then I would totally agree with you.

  • @depatie99
    @depatie99 2 года назад +14

    I would like to see the decommissioning of the flight attendant cabin window dimmer master switch on the 787. Many passengers pay a premium to book a window seat so they should have the option to enjoy the view at whatever intensity of light offered by mother nature. I can watch a video any time on the ground, but the real time view out the window is the real entertainment IMHO.
    I do notice more passengers in America are quite content to have the blinds closed in their row from push back to arrival. I am torn when I select a seat these days as I prefer aisle seat access, but it drives me crazy to have the blinds closed by the window seat occupants on the critical phases of flight, take off and landing! Perhaps I'll have to book the row in order to be happy?!?!?

    By the way, behind you, where you were sitting in the lounge, there is an extended lounge, which is much more pleasant in terms of furnishing. LOT generally has a problem with punctuality/reliability. On the penultimate flight from HAM-TBS I had to spend the night in WAW because I did not reach the connecting flight in WAW.Last Sunday WAW-TBS one hour delay at check-in and then we had to wait again almost 45 minutes until the luggage was delivered to the plane.

    I just flew the new United Polaris 777 and I would choose the LOT product over that. Yes, it needs to be refreshed, but the room of the seat and length of the bed makes a difference for me over a long haul flight. The trade off is the privacy factor and old IFE so it comes down to preference. Either is great and way better than coach. My experience with LOT is that business is only half full most of the time.

The arm rests actually are able to be raised to create a “wall” of sorts spanning from your shoulders on back. They raise about 12-14” allowing for a bit more visual privacy from your neighbor (hopefully they don’t snore!). Service was impeccable too. Worth the upgrade at their reasonable price.

      Agree it's a dated product, but it's also horribly space inefficient for the airline.
      By replacing it with one of the very common foot cubby J designs they could probably add another row

      I flew LOT to Tokyo in the 787 in 2019 and everything was fine. I‘m an economy peasant though, so my opinion probably doesn‘t matter. I flew to Tokyo again with Qatar Airways in 2020 with a 777 and yes it was better, but also more expensive and come on, it‘s Qatar Airways. So in my opinion, LOT is a completely fine airline with good seats.

    • @parisdiacs1600

      @@odeiraoloap ...but is it miserable considering on LOT you pay a fraction of what TK or middle eastern carriers charge? On some routes - if one books well in advance LOT charges 50% less than on other carriers. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. If one wants a business class product such as the q-suites, fine - then go and pay the premium price at Qatar airways. But don't expect the same when you fly LOT and pay considerably less.

When I asked if I could "open" the shade I was curtly told no. I missed a beautiful full moon flight over the South Pacific. The crew didn't open the windows until we were on short final into SYD. I was in Premium Economy and had a lovely seat to look outside. I did write a complaint letter to AA but never got a response. Other than that the flight was very good.

    I've flown this product on long-haul flights to the U.S. quite often, especially since LOT is a star alliance member, and sometimes has some competitive prices compared to Lufthansa (I'm from Germany). The service on international flights is pretty great, and the seats, compared to Lufthansa are much more comfortable, especially the sleeping experience is better.
    Is a 2-2-2 config in business outdated? Definitely! But among the 2-2-2 you'll travel with LOT most comfortably, in my opinion. Additionally, the non-Schengen lounge in WAW is better, too and offers plenty of hot food options.

Is this race to the top at any price really healthy, while it is killing of proper first class services? What would be wrong, if we just said; if you want direct aisle access from every seat, then book the damn first class? Oh, and I hate herringbones! I'd always prefer this seat over that window view blocking crap many airlines, including such as SQ, uses these days. Outdated? Perhaps, but they price it right, and in that sense, I’m more than happy it’s a little outdated. For the price they charge, I can fly my family of four in business class on LOT, but on most other airlines, business class is way too expensive to do that, and I’m stuck in economy or economy premium. A slightly outdated business class seat on LOT is MUCH better than premium economy on any other airline. No comparison. Other major airlines charge 3x to 4x what LOT does for business class, and it’s not even close to worth it. For what? A privacy divider and a more responsive infotainment system? No thanks. I think LOT offers the best combination of value and luxury experience for business class. More than comfortable for long haul, and great service.

I agree that on a short daytime flight without significant time zone changes, windows up is a personal and justified choice. My main criticism is that how, on business class, does a bottle of wine pair with a plastic cup? LOT can do better especially when remembering that Europeans are wine lovers. Plastic destroys not only the planet but also a decent wine!

    These seats type is most comfortable of all business seats. In the the newer kind, in flat bed mode, legs are trapped inside under display screen. One can not bend knees without hitting the bottom of display which is painful. I am glad these type of seats are available including Lufthansa.

    LOT just announced recently that they will start retrofitting the cabins of their 787-8s. Honestly, I still prefer the 787-8 cabin over the 787-9 cabin. While the 787-9 cabin looks a lot newer, the IFE is slightly worse. The cursor glitches a lot more, and there is no remote controller in economy (there is in Business class). I also hate the dimmable windows in Dreamliners. They are either very blue or very yellow depending on the dimming option.

    Im not too sure whether or not if i should fly with LOT again after my nightmare flight from Frankfurt to Warsaw in June when we boarded their Embraer 190/195 and we all noticed that the baggage handlers have not yet completed removing the luggage from the last flight and they have already closed the door and disconnected the ramp, there was some disgraceful behavior with the luggage handlers with me and other's noticing one guy that was just throwing the luggage off the plane into the luggage trailer and some of the luggage was thrown onto the ground and more reckless behavior, and then his colleague told him to stick his head him, and then the guy in question was going off at the other guy. We weren't given any announcements about what was going on and what time they reckon the plane will leave, but once they came around with water, we all knew that we were all gonna be sitting there for a bit, and around about that time they have closed all of the luggage compartment doors on the plane, but we sat there for another hour. We were now 2 hours and 30 minutes late when we took off, we had a fast flight and quite a fast approach into Warsaw which saved us 30 minutes. Now here came another issue, it took the airport 30+ minutes to get our planes luggage to the conveyor belt, which now meant i missed my bus to Kielce (a town in Poland) and that was the last one for the day, and we had to buy train tickets to get there (it took us 4 trains and 1 angry ass ticket lady to get to Kielce thanks to LOT) and believe it or not there was no apology from anyone at LOT. I wrote an email off to them and I've yet to have received a response from them.
    Leave all that shit behind now, but if LOT were to operate their route from Singapore to Warsaw once again, then I may consider flying with them again, but for now on i will try get Qatar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa to get to Poland.

      LOT has to be very careful with spendings. Poland is poor, the financial situation is bad, it will be worse. LOT is a national company. They have to count every penny - to see what would be most beneficial. Perhaps updating Dreamliners, perhaps something else. From what I know they want to modernize mid range tubo prop fleet in 2022. There simply may not be enough money for Dreamliners upgrade.

      @@greatgordonfan7094 Financially I would agree with you. For now I imagine embraers will take their place, which are more expensive to operate, the prices will go up. I don't know what are the options of obtaining another turbo prop as a replacement. They are slower but on such short distances it hardly matters. Q400s had however a series of malfunctions, especially with landing gear, including those planes which fly for LOT. With one flight the landing gear collapsed and the plane hit with its nose on the landing strip. Thankfully nobody got hurt, but it was a close call. There is a reason why SAS airlines are also getting rid of Q400s or they have gotten rid of them already.

    Turkish has same seats in their 777s and new Stelia seats in their 787s . While new Stelia seats look far more cooler and much more private , they are equally less comfortable as you re practically inserting your legs in a box. These seats are simply more spacious in all dimensions. Space wise, they may be closest to first class seats. I would rather lose some privacy but not hit my legs on top of the seat rest.
