Dear Motortrend, would you guys mind adding in a chart for fastest lap times during your 2013 Best Driver's Car testing? It would make it much easier for us so we don't have to write all of the times down! Loving all of video content so far, thank you and keep posting! :)
Actually, he DOES talk during his hot laps. MotorTrend replied to several comments yesterday asking about it, and confirmed that he gives real-time commentary while setting his fastest laps.
It's in the competition because best driver's car doesn't only mean it has to be a beast on the track but there's also a component where cars are tested on open roads. If you watched the video they made on "Choosing the 2013 Best Driver's Car" then you would know why.
One word - Sound Proofing. Sound proofing is one of the main weight adding features of a luxury car. You can't really hear the engine sound up till 150km/hr Another thing that people don't realise is the little luxury fixtures are all individually heavier than similar luxury fixtures on something like a lexus. You can really tell the difference in quality when you tap on the wood fascias.
For me, this is one of the best looking cars ever and of course the best looking bentley. I'm just too young for these old-times, Johnny Lieberman is tweeting the last days :D
I like the fact that Motortrend put the Bentley for Best Drivers car unless it is tested how can it be adjudged to be a great drivers car or not, if you hate seeing it that much just skip the video!
Define pretty well. The Bentley eats the road and cars ahead of it, it feels crazy heavy and solid, which is what they were going for. A drivers car, and what most people considering a good handling car, will feel extremely nimble and quite light. The Bentley has a tendency to understeer when pushed hard, something that most enthusiast drivers find extremely boring, as a drivers car should have the tendency to be neutral or oversteer when pushed. Great handling is more than just numbers.
I don't necessarily agree. Have you driven a '13 Continental GT Speed? I haven't, but the reviews I've seen have been very positive. Yes, weight might negate the fun-to-drive aspect of a car, but 621horsepower & 590 lb-ft torque can certainly add to it... Every car has it's pros & cons.
He obviously would want to focus on driving during the hot lap, not making commentaries. They just have him making commentaries on the cool down lap, or maybe even a warm up lap.
I drove the V8 at 240km/hr with the top down.. on the highway. IT'S BADASS!! Plus it was a metallic burnt orange color car with black interiors with orange cross stitching. Sadly Bentley didn't allow me to go pick up women with their test car. :(
my friend who's in high school, crashed this car on it's back. my friend's car's front bumper came off, and the the continental's back bumper got a scratch. After this day, my friend's family almost became suicidal...
Bentley Coupes have always been pigishly heavy, and massive, but they make that up in power, braking, and style. Granted it's expensive, and the average auto enthusiast would prefer to drive either a Corvette, or a GTR.
It doesn't exactly have "handling." It has unique handling characteristics, but its not exactly a canyon carver. In fact most people would prefer a bit less luxury for a luxury car, as we want less sound deadening so that we can actually hear the beautiful sound the engine makes.
Not bad for a car that big. I noticed that on the corkscrew, randy has to use 100% of the available width of the track. He doesn't do that with any other car in the comp really. Just show much mass he has to deal with.
On Earth, they can be used interchangeably. Gravity doesn't change to such an extent where it would matter if you said weight or mass. It is annoying when people don't know what they are talking about.
It's because they shoot a hot lap and a commentated lap separately. You didn't expect Randy to drive the wheels out of a car while he's talking did you?
Everything you said, or almost everything, is wrong. Braking distance is very much determined by weight. If this car weighted 2000 pounds less, it would stop in less than 111ft. Giving it more power will make it faster only in a straight line. Handling depends on weight, VERY MUCH so. A heavier car will always have more inertia than a lighter one, and will never be as agile, change direction quickly, shift the balance quickly, etc.
Not entirely true. A heavy car is not a nimble car. It will take that much longer to accelerate and that much longer to brake. There is a lot of weight transfer under hard acceleration and braking. Basically, the car won't feel as quick as something lighter. Just my 2-cents. :)
It weights +5000 pounds but it's the most powerful car here, right after the viper. and it's one of the best looking and best equipped. And surprisingly it isn't the most expensive... So if it's good to drive... why not?
Bentley should consider making a 2 seat lighter weight sport version. It will still be heavy, but with just two seats, and not sooooo much luxury, could have a nice gt car to compete with the sls with that awesome drive train
And the knobs, buttons, door handles are exactly the same as in my SEAT Leon (Golf/A3/Octavia). Excusable in something like an Aston Martin which has only just secured major investment from Mercedes, but you'd think a cash rich company like VAG could afford to make the fixtures & fittings in a Bentley a little more bespoke. Impressive vehicle nonetheless.
the footage is not the same, the one he is wearing the white helmet he is trying to take the car to its limits but when he wearing the black helmet he driving and giving his opinion about the car and how it drives
A car that hits 0-60 in 4 seconds feels exactly the same whether it weight 2000 pounds or 5000 pounds. You still accelerate at an exact same rate, the forces you feel are exactly the same, if the car reaches the speed in exactly the same time. You think heavier car feels faster when accelerating because it REQUIRES more torque and there's more kinetic energy involved? You REALLY have no clue about physics, do you...back to elementary school please, unless you're already there.
Randy looks so preposterous in his racing suit and helmet in this Bentley....definitely a bad decision to include a Hippo into the best drivers car competition ....
Both are out of production. Best Driver's Car only includes cars that are either brand new for the year, or had significant changes made to them. The GT2RS and ZR1 qualify for neither.
And what happens when you brake hard often in a heavy car? Brakes will start to overheat and you will lose performance. What happens when you push a heavy car hard on the track? Tires will overheat quickly and you will lose performance. And so on and so on....its the Nissan GT-R syndrome. Its fast for a lap or two, then it starts to slow down. Same thing with a Continental GT. Might be fast on paper, but its not made for a race track, its luxury grand tourer made to be driven at 60-70%.
You can call it Speed, Le Mans, Mulliner, SuperSports or whatever but a car weighing 5300 lbs. does not belong on a racetrack. I mean at that point, you might as well throw in a Range Rover Supercharged and see what happens.
That's not what makes a driver's car. And it doesn't have handling.... with all that extra power and speed, it was only 3 seconds faster than a Focus ST.
WOW...🤯 What an amazing automobile! The engine sound and the insane roar down the track actually makes me giggle! 🤗
This was meant for all day cruising at hyper speeds in luxury and comfort and that it can be competent on a technical track like laguna is a bonus.
Thank you for the video
Can't believe how quiet the car is inside even at high speeds.
Just an amazing engineering feat, this car. Amazing that it can go so fast and be so composed at this size.
Randy's face @ 1:24 = "Just another day in the office..." :D
Keep up the great work Randy and MT!

This was the most entertaining hot lap.... It's so funny watching a huge luxury cruiser being put through it's paces! :D
Beautiful color combination and what a great everyday GT.

thats impressive for a car with that weight

Look at the name of the competition; Best Driver's Car. Properbly because it handels very nicely.
lol, 4 seconds slower than the e63. that's gotta hurt
For me, this is one of the best looking cars ever and of course the best looking bentley. I'm just too young for these old-times, Johnny Lieberman is tweeting the last days :D
What`s the point of measuring time in auto gearbox mode?
Top 3 in my books. The Bentley Continental GT Speed is going to come second place. What a beautiful car. :)
You just said it. "Driver's car competition".
Drove ok ne of last years model in Vegas. Really a head turner car
wonder what that things put out once turbo set to 10-15psi when it allready makes 616 hp on 4.4 psi
Wow. Compared to some of the other vehicles tested so far, this one is the most quietest.
Awesome! My favorite car :) Well, one of my favorites
Well the ZF gearbox has a torque converter which is in many drivers cars for eg the bmw m135i.

loved the red interior!
Amazing sound!!
does anyone know the diffrence between a v12 and a w12
Never cared for Bentleys, but this is one beautiful looking car.
Instead of getting all their camera angles on one lap, they have a cinematic second lap to get beauty shots.
The W-12 is basically two Volkswagen V-6's using a single crank.
This is a car you go to the track in a robe and penny loafers while sipping wine setting a fast lap time. Lol
He obviously would want to focus on driving during the hot lap, not making commentaries. They just have him making commentaries on the cool down lap, or maybe even a warm up lap.
The Focus Is Only 3s Off Of The Bentley...WOW
Nope. The Bently did very well despite weighing a ton.
lol i wonder how many bentley owners have actually ever taken their car to the track haha still an amazing car
Is csaba csere the guy talking ?
Anyone notice that on the video cover picture the front brakes are red
I drove the V8 at 240km/hr with the top down.. on the highway.
IT'S BADASS!!
Plus it was a metallic burnt orange color car with black interiors with orange cross stitching. Sadly Bentley didn't allow me to go pick up women with their test car. :(
5000 pounds thats insane!
Did the focus beat this thing?
If they´d only ditch the 4WD, this thing would be the classiest, tyre-destroing driftmonster on the surface of earth...
Very beatiful car and the engine sounded lovely, too bad about its time though.
my friend who's in high school, crashed this car on it's back. my friend's car's front bumper came off, and the the continental's back bumper got a scratch. After this day, my friend's family almost became suicidal...
Randy Pobst has the best job in the world.
Bentley Coupes have always been pigishly heavy, and massive, but they make that up in power, braking, and style. Granted it's expensive, and the average auto enthusiast would prefer to drive either a Corvette, or a GTR.
yeah i think the hot lap video is not from the same lap he is commenting on too
It doesn't exactly have "handling." It has unique handling characteristics, but its not exactly a canyon carver. In fact most people would prefer a bit less luxury for a luxury car, as we want less sound deadening so that we can actually hear the beautiful sound the engine makes.
i vertually have no idea why Motortrend would put a BENTLEY that weights over 5,200 pounds a Best Drivers' Car competition.....
A 5000+ pound car with a torque converter should not even be considered for BDC. Anyone else agree?
Not bad for a car that big. I noticed that on the corkscrew, randy has to use 100% of the available width of the track. He doesn't do that with any other car in the comp really. Just show much mass he has to deal with.

It's because they shoot a hot lap and a commentated lap separately. You didn't expect Randy to drive the wheels out of a car while he's talking did you?
They ADDED 4-ish psi, it was already running on an amount of boost before that.
Everything you said, or almost everything, is wrong. Braking distance is very much determined by weight. If this car weighted 2000 pounds less, it would stop in less than 111ft. Everywhere there's a little money you see these things in fleets, it's a Golf in more ways than one.
first! great show, congrats to MotorTrend
prbly using multiple shots, one for outside shots and the interior stuff is randy during the fast lap
Bentley should consider making a 2 seat lighter weight sport version. It will still be heavy, but with just two seats, and not sooooo much luxury, could have a nice gt car to compete with the sls with that awesome drive train
pause the video type 1980...surprises you....This actaully works No joke

1:46!
Brilliant! Looked like a jolly good laugh as well. ;-)
I don't understand how could they make a 2 door sedan so heavy? Does it have a bar or a swimming pool at the back seats?
As far as i recall it "...reduced by 44 pounds..." means reduced mass not weight.
the footage is not the same, the one he is wearing the white helmet he is trying to take the car to its limits but when he wearing the black helmet he driving and giving his opinion about the car and how it drives
excellent !
Are you planning on driving it on another planet?
Super cruiser the only car to go across country really fast.
Bentley for the Best
It's a $250,000 luxury car, not a driver's car. The Focus ST was only 3 seconds slower than this.
My favorite car!
Prize bonds come on the million euro bond I want a Bentley. 21/8/2013.Irish time 22:42.Wednesday.

Nope you're wrong. The 911 Carrera comes with a manual as standard.
Randy looks so preposterous in his racing suit and helmet in this Bentley....definitely a bad decision to include a Hippo into the best drivers car competition ....
Ok so what the GT 500 does that at the fraction of a price
With my next quarter million...I'm buying this. Hah!
in the closeups the driver is wearing a black helmet and in some of the further away shots a white helmet...
Hmm..is that why they call him the stig? Like they dress every factory driver in the same suit? Haha
Both are out of production. Best Driver's Car only includes cars that are either brand new for the year, or had significant changes made to them. The GT2RS and ZR1 qualify for neither.
The new youtube uptade for my iphone is almost as good as that car i think ;-)
a v12 has 2 banks of 6 cylinder
a w12 has 4 banks of 3 in a W formation
Motivation
Well I think he means that they are lazy for keeping it in auto mode rather the triptonic gear shift or using the paddles.
And what happens when you brake hard often in a heavy car? Brakes will start to overheat and you will lose performance. What happens when you push a heavy car hard on the track? 3 seconds on leguna seca is a lot!
1:40 hoooly shit, look at that rear!
Seems like this car is in here just to add contestants...clearly not a drivers car.
over 1:46?
Freiburger and Finnegan ROADKILL!!!!!
That's pretty quick for a yacht with wheels. lol
Why do they make a 4 seat car if you can't even fit two peoples in the back seats?
That's not what makes a driver's car. And it doesn't have handling.... with all that extra power and speed, it was only 3 seconds faster than a Focus ST.
