I’ve just taken on an allotment! So nervous but your videos make me so excited for our journey. Would love a video about your journey from where you started through to now.
Congratulations! Oh that’s just so exciting 👏🏻 This time of the year is a great time to take one on because you can see the plot looking stripped back and see how much space you really have. It’s a good time to get any brambles out, improve your soil with a mulch of organic matter (compost, rotted horse/cow manure) and plan for next year. I have plans to create a video of my journey from the beginning to now. I only started this channel in the last few years (I’ve had mine for 6). It’s tough in the beginning but it’s so worth it. Stick at it, join the allotment community on Instagram if you haven’t already. Photograph your progress and don’t try to achieve too much at once. Little and often and you’ll soon be there! 🙌🏻 Best of luck to you and your new allotment 💚
@@homegrowngarden Thanks for your encouraging words! We have inherited some weird things and some good things. I just love your videos. They give me such great tips and info on what to do and plants to try out, even though I live in a different area. Keep up the great work. I'm so jealous of your flowers this year. My flower garden didn't do nearly as well. We had way too much rain in spring and the beginning of summer, and it was too mild for much longer than we're used to in the southeast us. A lot of our zinnias and Dahlias rotted or caught fungi from all the rain. Our veg garden did very well though.
My plot neighbor had alium leaf miner in his onions. The stems all started curling in July. He applied a type of nematode and a few weeks later they were coming back to health, and he got a decent harvest. I do know that the nematodes are expensive though! Love your videos 👍
You think growing plants would be easy living in Hawaii. People think because we don't have a drastic change in seasons we can grow anything all year round. Hah! The plants can tell the difference in seasons. They die on me or just stay green taking up space. When the right season comes along, then they blossom. We had a hot summer this year, (drought restrictions), and a lot of my plants got sunburned. Ouch, I know how that feels. Your garden surprises me as to how many plants can withstand the cold. Our problem here is either too hot or too rainy, which is our winter. Love the tour of your garden.

Heya, thanks for watching. I follow no-dig gardening principles (popularised by Charles Dowding) so I try to minimise disturbance as much as possible to maintain soil health, structure, prevent weeds and most importantly to keep all the microbial activity and soil life happy. A healthy, happy soil is everything! As you can see in the video it’s quite tricky with large root veg such as parsnips but rather than digging over the soil, I slid the spade down the sides of the parsnip to loosen the soil as much as possible without turning it over and creating lots of disturbance.
Hello nice lady, you look lovely with this lovely smile of yours and you look lovely even without this lovely smile of yours. See you look lovely anyway, greetings.
I disagree with not pulling the leeks fully, cutting them off at soil level is wasting so much of the leek it’s pointless growing them. Charles Dowding gives some good advice, but I wouldn’t waste good food to follow his advice.
