@ 2:38 my old engine in my 135 made that same sound. On disassembly I found pieces of a lifter retaining clip in my oil pickup tube, that engine had a consistent 190 across all 6 cylinders.
@@jake_spence I ended up swapping the motor with Joe's old engine so I am not sure if it would have been fine just going that route. but, his old engine cracked a piston from detonation. next week I'm swapping the good head from his old engine to my original short block. we shall see for certain if the engine was making that exact noise from that retaining clip.
So glad to get this information!! I've only just discovered you in the last three weeks so I missed the missing of you (Thankfully LOL). I daily an E46 M3. But I just bough (For the second time) a 2008 335i for $1900.00 and am putting it right again after a young guy let it slip down with bad HPFP and plugs and coils along with the need for a new Valve cover and gasket. Thus the NEED for your channel! Thank you for being here to show us you hard work nd time working out these cars!
If u hold a screwdriver to your ear and place the other end to the top and bottom of engine you could get a better idea on where the sound is coming from.
Enjoy your videos man!! Im new to the n54 scene and your content is very helpful and not to immature.... has good balance tone to it! 💯💯 Keep up the great work!
Hold the engine at a steady RPM and record the sound. Use audio analysis software like Audacity and figure out what the period of the noise is. This should tell you if its top or bottom end. Top end rotates 1/2 as fast. If you hold at 2000 rpm, that is 33.3 rotations per second on the crank, but half that for the cams.
Our engines are notorious for the rod bearings to go bad, I would install new rod bearings just in case, if that doesn’t fix it then atleast you won’t have to worry about them- preventative maintenance, and replace the oil pan gasket while your down there! I’m a technician at bmw and it’s common to see rod bearings go bad
Probably a bearing or some, wouldn’t recommend ripping on it anymore could end up seizing some up. I love the build, feel like a little internal upgrade would kill the game.
Sounds like it could be bottom end like maybe the start of a bearing letting go. I’d take a sample of the oil and send it to black stone to really see whats up. Hopefully she’s not cooked
Agreed! Unfortunately the oil is gone and I don’t think Blackstone would be able to tell me what specifically would be wrong. I think we might inspect the head, but it definitely could be a bearing.
@@jake_spence damn yeah that sucks:( the blackstone analysis would just tell you if it was for sure bearing material or something else but keep us posted!
Good video. On a late nineties Nissan 3.3L V-6 how much metal particles are acceptable in the oil filter at 4,000 miles? It's got 164,000 miles on it. Regularly maintained. Thanks!
Sometimes since we have hydraulic lifters they get a little stuck there’s a tsb about it rev your car to about 3500rpm for about 1 minute and see if it solves it mine would do that for a while ran some different cleaners through my oil and a few oil changes back to back and I’ve been fine
hello brother, I also have these problems and I wanted to ask you how did you understand that it was that faulty component giving you problems? did you find any error code related to that component?
No codes. It was a super big pain in the butt. Since it used to do it after filling up, I started checking all things fuel related and eventually landed on this.
Throw in some ACL race bearings standard size. I had only 76 k miles and my oem bearings were not great looking and it was stock motor. When I got it 1k miles ago haha
I’m surprised anyone noticed! I didn’t have any locally and wanted to change it ASAP. Figured this motor might not be seeing too many more oil changes so I just said “screw it”
Miejers e85 always test lower than the kwik trip across the street. Highest I got from meijer was e68. The kwik trip has e75 even in dead of winter. Just for reference my car always liked across the street more
I have a similar noise, but it goes away after a while. Do you still have the noise when the car is fully up to temp? I’m also running xclutch twin disc rigid ceramic. I thought it was the clutch because the sound coming from the wheel well area and under the car(right underneath the front driver/passenger).
Hey man I got a question if you could help me put I got a bmw 535i f10 I got the one step colder spark plugs because am pushing 400hp now but I got them gapped at 0.026 because i gapped them at 0.022 and the engine was just shaking bad but I don't have a cold air intake installed yet but am almost full bolt except the cold air intake and the spark plugs tip got blacked after one day I think the fuel is rich do you think its because I don't have enough air going into the engine or its something else what you think I should do??
Jake Spence indeed she does 🤣 ur page is the only one that still gives me hope for my n54 build hahaha but it has held up to a good amount of boost already. Good excuse to build the engine ;)
Hey Jake given the situation I most likely would have beat on her then got tested. At least with the compression out of the way there's definitely hope right! Know it felt good tho bro 😅👍

Love watching these videos and then walking out to the garage and be able to play with my 335
Do the rod bearings first with oem parts then start using zddp high zinc additive on every oil change.
Glad you found it! I am happy that i was right, it was a vacuum leak ahah
Jake thanks for the content on the 135i which is my dream car! Still trying to get rid of my E82 120d so I can buy one
Check your ac pulley for play, saw a few vids where a "rod knock" was mis-diagnosed , although the metal in the oil filter gives me chills

Those are 100% rod bearings. Had the same noise & issue with my 335i. Get the King Bearings and swap em out.. not too bad. Hopefully the crank is OK

It actually is more noticeable after the car gets up to temp. Unfortunately it’s not the loud clutch or the injectors.
What headlights do you run in your 135i? Have to be the cleanest update for headlights I’ve seen yet!
Probably not the main culprit but I've heard that aluminum ECS oil filter housing you have can shed some metal shavings off
Do you have a build engine or its stock block?
Why E85 on a high performance motor? Sounds wicked!!!
E85 burns cooler which allows you to tune up the car more. Helps with knock too
