  • Day 23 of @InkJournal's challenge - #30inks30days finds me wrestling with a permanent ink: DeAtramentis Document Fog Grey. I like the color but the properties of the ink create a lot of bleed thru so overall a frustrating experience especially for a Sunday but I'm coping with a Japanese fine nib to get thru the day with this ink. It is truly waterproof. A comparable ink is: Scribes Ink Dark Slate Blue Waterproof Document ink which I heard about from Brian at The Pen Thing - his website is: thepenthing.com
My sample came in the May 2018 Ink Flight Box.
They don't currently carry that ink but I found it at Goulet Pens:

These document inks are really popular with sketch artists for ink and watercolor drawings. If you were to test it on a thick watercolor paper. I think you might have very different results. It might not be an ink you like to write with but drawing could be a different story.

Hi Hannah -- oh this makes much more sense to me. I could not figure how anyone could write with this one. Another one I ran into like it was Noodler's Texas Blue Bonnet. Nothing (writing paper) would contain it!!!!

@@ChrisSaenz13 That said you might have gotten a bad batch because your experience is more problematic than expected. Some people were having more issues with the fog grey than with some of the other colors in the line.

Love this series!! I hope when the month ends maybe you could continue, maybe not every day, maybe once or twice a month? You have plenty of inks to sample from, it’s just been so informative and fun to make wishlists

Hi grannaboo03 -- definitely I plan to continue -- the ink videos are really happy and fun for me to do and I'm learning so much too. I tend to think in weeks but I also set monthly goals for number of videos. Now I am sure I will enjoy making at least 2 videos a week and as much fun as this has been we'll have to see if I do more than 2 a week. The Ink Flights alone provide 7 new inks a month and pen friends have been so generous!!!!! That's one reason I did the thank you video too was to show how well stocked I am with samples!!!!! I'm still catching up on indexing them and I'm beginning to realize I have some inks already now that were on my wishlist for samples. :) But I will get organized and caught up gradually!!!!!!

Hi Chris, now that is my kind of colour loving greys at the moment for some reason and liking the Fog Grey especially. The bluish tone sets it apart from other greys. Thanks for mentioning the behaviour of the ink and how it feathers and bleeds through most paper which is a bit of a disappointment. I have had the same problem with inks i have really liked but have been let down by the said problems you mentioned. Also as i have found out over time that some inks react differently from one pen to the other due to the nature of the ink. Thank you very much Chris, and i value your ever growing knowledge of inks, pens and all other pen related topics. God Bless and see you on the next video!!!!

Oh, tomorrow is going to be fun, since I just bought that ink recently! I was interested in these DeAtramntis inks especially since I have the Night Blue-Sherlock Holmes! Thanx again for another look into the fun of this hobby!

Hi Jodiana -- at the time of this video I believe I was using my Traveler's Comany passport size TN with homemade for the most part inserts. :) Now I'm using a pocket A6 size hardcover for it. But in January I may go back into the little leather TN - it is a favorite!!!!

Some folks have reported that dilution of inks that bleed with distilled water in a 10-15% ratio seems to help with bleedthru.

Hi JJ that's interesting and would be really fun to try sometime.

Well you got through a tough week and still stayed right on topic. I love the Grey's and never thought I would. For permanent inks, my solution, while not perfect, is to use the right hand page. I put a separate piece of scrap paper underneath to catch bleedthrough and then just skip the back of that page completely. It feels wasteful but I really like some of those inks. I'd rather waste a page than miss an ink or ruin a book. Maybe that is useful. Blessings on your head. Robbin

Hi Robbin. That would work in my Office Depot notebook I think. I just baby the Cafe Note notebook because I love it so much and it was more expensive. :) Blessings to you as well!!!

@@ChrisSaenz13 Chris, I completely understand. I looked at the cafe note. It is absolutely beautiful and I want the paper. The price is just more than I feel comfortable with. I would baby it too.

DeAtamentis inks, especially the document inks are horrid for bleeding and bleedthrough. The longer they are out of original bottle the worse they become. Won't purchase them ever again.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  6 лет назад

Hi Nancy -- I'm not going to either. Hmmm that's interesting about it being worse when they are out of the original bottle. I did have this sample for awhile.

I've watched several ink reviews from VittaR and she did several thorough ink reviews and found this so I'll never purchase another one (I have one and yep it does that too) I don't think she is doing new reviews but I loved them and have watched them all. She tests each ink on 4 or 5 different papers.
