In 68 a high school friend picked me up in his father's new cougar. Five years later I finally had enough money to purchase a used 68 at a auction. Forty nine years later I still own that cougar and enjoy it more than ever. Never fails to turn heads and receive compliments from all generations!
The 1st gen Cougar is such a sleek looking cat and the styling is still unique and cool to this very day. Cars from the 60s were just in a class all their own and the Cougar will never go out of style.
I learned to drive in a 1969 Bronze Cougar with a black vinyl roof, and a 351 Windsor V-8. Despite having to get the carb rebuilt and the door widows put back on track every couple of years, I loved that car. My biggest regret is ever selling it.
Wow, I agree with you 100%. I still regret selling my ‘69 red Cougar convertible. I must have fixed the damn side window 5 or 6 times. Since my car was a convertible, the glass would almost go flying off. When I rebuilt the carb, we put the 4 barrel from my friend’s mom’s 429 LTD on my 351. We turned the air cleaner lid over and went down the freeway. Cruising along I floored the accelerator; the car downshifted and literally lurched forward, the sound of the four barrel opening and the deep roar of the dual exhaust-a wonderful memory all these years later.
I own a 67 xr7 289, as well as a 67 dan gurney special. I'm glad the cougar is getting some more recognition from my generation as they are some of the most fun cars to drive from that generation of vehicles. The interior is unmatched and the hideaway headlights gave a little bit of sexiness that anyone could love. This is by far the most underrated muscle car.

Never owned any of the first generation cougars. I did own a1971 cougar xr-7 . Grabber lime green , dark green interior and a full green vinyl top. Had a 351 Cleveland 4 barrel with quench heads. It was the 14 th built for the 71 model year. Miss the car and the memories!!
When I was a kid, an older gentleman on my street owned a Cougar from around 67. It was baby blue with a white or black top. (it's been over 50 years). I always thought the sequential tail lights were so cool. They were gorgeous cars.
When I was 17 years old my dad worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealership, Every night he’d bring home a different car One night he brought home a 69 Cougar with a 429 4-speed, I think it had been ordered as a race car because it was very basic, it didn’t even have a radio or heater, After taking my brother and I for a very spirited drive he let us take it for a drive, That Cougar was the fastest car I’ve ever driven
I use to flat dust those Cougars in my Dodge's. Sometimes I'd let a 17 yr. old catch up, to make em feel like "Billy badasses.". And as I could see em with that Billy badass look on their face, I'd look out the window and suggest they get a carwash. I didn't mention it would be to get all that Dodge dust off em.

I had a 1969 Cougar and absolutely loved it! I bought it in the early seventies and drove it for about ten years before family needs forced a trade to a station wagon (hate to admit I traded my beloved cougar for a station wagon!) about ten years later. To this day I regret having sold that car. It is still one of the best-looking cars of that era...or today for that matter.
My best friend in high school had a 1968 Cougar XR7. Dark green, black vinyl top, black leather interior. 302 with 4 barrel and dual exhaust. Fully loaded with a stunning wood dash filled with instruments. It was a gorgeous car and we had more way fun in that Cougar than should be allowed. Thanks for the memories!
In 1967, I took a tour of the Ford Milpitas, CA assembly plant. To my surprise, they were assembling both Mustang & Cougars on the same line at the same time! Underneath, they are the same car (Cougar had a slightly longer wheel base).
A 1970 Cougar was my first car purchased in my high school senior year of 1978. Plain Jane model blue exterior, blue interior. 351 Windsor. I added the chrome ford GT slotted wheels which had a beauty ring. And radial TA's. I was very proud of the car. Basically, washed and waxed it every couple of days. It was a beauty. Only wish it had a few more options that it did. But still a great Saturday nite cruiser for a high school kid.

67 is my fav. My dad worked for Ford Asrosoace in Newport Beach, he & my mom attended a private unveiling of the 67 Cougar at a hotel. A live cougar lay on the roof of a white Cougar. I have owned a 72 Cougar, an 88, and a 93.
In 1975 I had a 1970 cougar, red with a black vinyl top and cragar mags big v8 engine. Really turned some heads. Man I had some good times in that car. Good memories.

Used to have a '67. I had no idea that it was selected as Car of the Year. Go figure. LOL! 🙃 It was the XR-7 model. One of the favorite features was the windshield's "wash" mode...It was a miniature "gas pedal" for the left foot. Translate: Just rest foot in that location. If you're on the highway and the windshield gets dirty, simply push the pedal and immediately let go. Wipers run one cycle while the windshield "gets a bath". Repeat if needed. Press and hold and it remains running until you let go. EXTREMELY easy to drive with aclean windshield 100% of the time. The other fave was the seats: When in it, one was sitting--or so it felt--in more of a "toboggan" than in a car. Very kick back with a steering wheel in your lap. Then...umm...GO. FAST. Hehe!
The ‘67 Cougar is one of my favorite cars since I was a kid. My dad had a friend that bought one and I remember coming home from school and seeing them turning wrenches on it almost everyday. Today I still excited when I see one and it is one of my favorite Hot Wheels to customize. Thanks for the awesome videos!
The 1st gen Cougar was a real looker. I remember when it was released. It was clean and elegant. It really did seem a step up from ordinary American cars. Ford tried to milk it and present it as a thinking man's sporty car. The strategy worked pretty well. Even now those early Cougars look classy.
Love the first generation, but you forgot to mention the high performance version, and my third favorite muscle car of all time: the 428 CJ Cougar Eliminator. I think a Boss 302 was available, and finding one with a Boss 429 is slim to none.
You could get the Boss 302 as part of the Eliminator Package. I remember one sitting in a dealers shop for almost a year because of the higher price to get it.
67 had the base w 289, xr7, gt 390. 68 had base w 302 new for 68, xr7 gt, gt-e 7liter 427 side oiler first 1/2, 428 cj second 1/2, Dan gurney special. 69, 70 body change, that's when the eliminator came out. I had a 67, wished I still had it. New a guy who had a 68 gt-e xr7, after 70 they got big. But later in life I got a 85, just got married and was a great car.

We owned a '68 Cougar and a '67 Camero RS at the same time. Then a 3rd child came along and both ended up being replaced by a station wagon. The Cougar was and still is my wife's favorite car. More attractive and advanced than the Mustang, I don't understand why they're not more sought after today. What a beautiful and great car!! Thanks for memory lane.
I owned a 1970 XR7 351 C , great motor. , stall speed , 3.73 posi ,,Fun car to drive,,,got me in a lot of trouble. .Hard not to hammer it ,,,that built Cleveland engine sounded beautiful going thru the gears.
My first car was a 69 Cougar XR7 I got in 1976 for $950. It had the 351 Cleveland engine, the tilt away wheel, power windows & leather seats!! It was dark jade with a white vinyl top!!! Other than having to put the driver's window back on the track every once in a month the car was great, I wish I still had it!!! Thanks for sharing this exciting video!!! 👍👍🙂

67 Cougar XR7, THAT I owned was a very sweet ride. Great handling, and the 289 gave it plenty of performance. Traded it in on new 69 XR7, with a 351 Cleveland! WooHoo. That was my favorite ever. Then kids came and ...... all good
This was a great looking car. It had a really bad blind spot in the back behind the driver. I had two friends that had a cougar and both were killed doing a u turn pulling infront of a oncoming car.
My favorite has always been the 68. I've owned one for the last 25 yrs. XR7 model. Originally it was Wellington Blue. It's about 2 weeks out from being back on the road after 20 + yrs!
How can you not love the Cougar. I saw a first gen in jet black in pristine condition a few months ago, strolling down the road, it sounded like a 302, purred great, looked great.
Great video guys! Love your Channel. I think the Mercury Cougar is one of the most amazing cars ever produced. In my 60 years I've had many cougars of various model years. Most recently a 1977 XR7 that my parents ordered and purchased new when the 77 model year came out in late 76. This is the car I got my first driver's license in. To this day the car has just 36,000 original miles on it. Please continue your series on the cougar up through and including 1977 and newer. Perhaps all the way up through the last cougar ever made. Keep up the good work guys!
great video! I worked at a dealership (Village Lincoln Mercury in 1967. my job was to deliver new cars to several dealers in the area a customer ordered a fully equipped Cougar big block etc. i almost got fired for smoking the tires pulling out of the driveway ! it was fast!!
Ha! To be young again!! I was 17 years old in 1981 and was a car porter at a Chevy dealership. At the end of the day we had to drive the Corvettes to the back. I owned a brand new 67 Cougar with a high perf. 289 with a 4 bbl, light blue with a black vinyl roof. One of the most fun cars I have ever had. Sadly it was rear ended in 1971 and written off. Loved that car! Thanks for the memories.
I had two Cougars. A Silver 1976 XR7 with a Cleveland 351 V8 engine. More luxury than sporty, but still a hot car. My second Cougar was a 2000 XR7 they called the color Sapphire I thought it was darker than that. I was considering buying a Chrysler Sebring Convertible then, but I went looking at cars with my sister and we took a look at the Cougar. When we poped the hood and I saw that 24 Valve DOHC Duratec V6 on the valve cover, I was sold. I had that car for 17 years and put over 210,000 miles on it. I only traded it in because water pump, power steering pump and most of the original hoses and belts were worn out and desperately in need of replacing. I think my favorite generation was the first and if I was economically able to buy one in those days my first choice would be the 69 Convertible.
In High School, I drove a 1976 Mercury Montego MX (Very similar to the Cougar). It was black on black with a 351 engine. I also put on Crager Rims. Great Car. 👍
Enjoyed this video. I fell in love with the '67 and what it was to the Mustang only after buying my first car - a 92 XR7, 5.0, black on black. My parents wouldn't let me buy the Mustang of it's year due to fears of my crashing it (understandably!), so I settled on Cougar. Had that car 14 years, and enjoyed it very much - probably way more than I would have enjoyed a Mustang. I wish Ford still had a Mercury/Lincoln equivalent to Mustang.
1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator is my favorite mark of all. The wooden auto shift handle in the 1970 Eliminator is also found in the 1970 Shelby Mustang.
The first car I ever purchased was a 1970 white houndstooth Cougar that I bought in 1978. I was 17. 351 Cleveland engine, FMX trans and a posi rear end. The drivetrain was so tight it would bark third gear in drive. Oh my God that thing was fast! The speedo meter had a little bend to the left from slapping the post at 120mph! And could turn on a dime. Only thing I didn't like was that damn beak on the hood. Got a lot of bruises on my head from it. Never lost a drag race against a stock 350 and most races against 340's. I was drifting in it long before drifting was a thing. And man, the girls loved it!
The first car I bought from a car dealership was a 1970 XR7, Baby Blue, with a White Vinyl Top, Leather Interior and 351C. Man that think would scream! I had a lot of fun in that car and not counting my street rods, was the best car I ever owned! Can't afford one now though! LOL Thanks for the video, it brought back some good memories for me. 🤠
As the original owner of a 1972 Cougar XR7 convertible that I ordered with the exact options I wanted, she has to be my favorite. I also am the care giver of a 1969 Cougar Eliminator, with its Competition Yellow paint she attracts a lot of attention. Both are still to drive.
I own a seventy two convertible with a 351 Cleveland. Man I miss that car! Bought it for $80.00. Rebuilt the motor for $900 and drove it for several yrs before the frame finally failed
@@ThisOldCarChannel the previous owner spun the timing chain and couldn’t get it started. I asked what he wanted for the car (after three years of driving by it everyday) he told to just get off my lawn. $80.00 was the cost of the tow!
My dad bought a brand new 68 Cougar as his fun car. Yellow with a black vinyl top. 390 2V GT with automatic. When I turned 16 took my drivers test in it. Within 10 minutes was at our local drag race stretch of road. Had to wipe the rear quarter panels with gasoline to get the burnt rubber off before I took it home. Several years later I bought a 69 Cougar. 390 2V (non GT). Pulled it and put in a built 289 with 4 speed. Fun cars with a unique style.
I always loved the Mercury Cougar… Even though my parents owned a Mustang in 1970. somebody in my neighborhood had a decked out 1970 mercury cougar purple in color with mag wheels. It was just so bad ass. I fell in love with that car.
That's a very special car the last year of the body style to. My favorite cougar was the 1970 Cougar when I was a kid I thought it was a spaceship because I seen it at night with the backlight on and the hideaways down I was baffled I couldn't believe it. I have on the 1969 XR7 and the 1970 base cougar which I own now. Needs to be restored though 😃👍
When I was 18 I bought a 1970 cougar and I fell in love now I am 52 and I am restoring a 1969 cougar eliminator and I just love it especially with my daughter helping me
Along with a a 67 Mustang Fastback I later had a rare 67 Cougar GT 390 4 spd. So similar package to the McQueen car in the movie Bullitt. Most performance optioned Cougars I ever saw were XR-7s and my cousin Joe had a green one which he got after coming home from Nam. My GT was a real sleeper with whitewall tires and hubcaps. Since it had no headrests for that year my favorite was taking someone for a ride and watching them grab their neck like their heads was going to come off from the acceleration. It was a power steering delete so "armstrong" was the order of the day with that big block up front... It later became my drag race car. Lots of good times with that car and my first girlfriend helping out at the drag strip... Great fun then!
My second car (bought in ‘72) was a 1967 Cougar XR7 with light green metallic paint and black vinyl top. It had the rally wheels with white letter tires. It had the 289 2-V so it was the least powerful engine, but had plenty of power. Of all the cars I owned, I’d rate it the best exterior styling and an awesome interior. Only one issue. The cooling system could best be described as a lemon. I went through two radiators and two water pumps during the 18 months I owned it in addition to hose replacements… left me stranded on faraway day trips three times. But I still wish I owned it. I always drove Lincoln Mercury Ford vehicles as a young man and have many fond memories of those high performing stylish cars. Always remember having to replace water pumps, starters and alternators every few years was the only problem.
I grew up watching my my dad daily drive and race his 68 xrz gt, witch is still driven on a regular basis. I still continue to love his and have taken after him I drive an 89 xr7 sc.
Thank you for the effort in the video. The footage was nice to see. Looking forward to the future parts of the Mercury Cougar story. I liked the ones from 1977-1979, and some of the 80's models, the last general. They were nice when equipped with digital clusters and those cloth interiors.
My buddy bought a 68 Cougar brand new, was a real beauty! It had a 302, Cobra Kit solids and 4 barrel carb with 3 on the floor. Great fun to drive and quick too!
A guy I know had one when we were in high school. Blue '68 I believe with 351Windsor transplant, slightly warmed up. The sequential tail lights were cool and she moved pretty good.
My favorite of the 1st gen Cougars was the '69. It was perfect from every angle, which rarely happens. Oddly enough, and I know this will sound weird, it skips ahead after that to the '77-'79 gen which I really love. An X-R7 of one of those years would make me very happy, along with a '74 or '75 Monte Carlo with the singular round headlights making it a 'Rolls Royce' for ordinary Americans. You know, the people our government hates more than anything.

Got it new at the local Mercury dealer at a discounted price. It was originally ordered by someone else but it came through without a center console .The buyer refused the car because the stick just came out of the carpeted trans hump.. Great car that I wish I had today. Great performer that could not only keep up with the Vettes of the era. I've heard that it now owned by a local landscaper , that I'll have to locate.
When I was young I had a 1967 and a 1969 Cougar…. Both of these cars have become my lifetime favorites…. Although I was the 4 th owner of the 1969 it was well maintained and a beautiful car. White leather interior, white vinyl top and burnt orange color, it looked spectacular in person.
First generation was by far my favorite, and I missed out on a couple chances to buy one back in the early eighties. Second generation and then the sixth and seventh generation cars are high on my list as well. The eighth is not even worthy of the name. I never owned the one I wanted, but I owned it's spiritual successor an '82 Mercury Capri 5.0 and I also owned a huge '78 Cougar. Loved them both for opposite reasons.
Bought 71 Cougar in Sep 70 when I got home from Vietnam. Loved the look and the drive. 2 children and 2 dogs later had to trade it for a damn station wagon

Got my license in 1982 driving my parent's brand new 1978 Cougar. First and ONLY new car they ever bought. My Mom babied that thing like you wouldn't believe. When they finally sold it....the body still looked pretty good. Still love the 67-68 years more though. What a boat the 78 was though.....
the 67 cougar was the first new car i ever bought and i loved the car but the sequential taillights were a problem, i had to carry extra bulbs with me all the time as the bulbs would always burn out in the back lights, and like someone below said, the mercury cars always had a better build quality to them than fords. the grand marquis is another fine example of this.
the 1969-70 were the best 2 years and arguably one of the best looking cars of its day. Loved the creased character line up the sides, and the grills looked the best. The car was gorgeous and resembled a smaller Charger look. Not big on the 67 and 68 models, but they were certainly better looking than the Mustangs. Not a Ford guy, but I used to have a 69 Cougar XR7. Sweet car.
I had always considered the '67 and '68 as "first generation". In my humble opinion, the best looking car ever made. I know opinions differ, but to me, starting in 1969, the looks went slowly downhill. If I were rich, I would choose one of these first two years of Cougar to drive over anything else period.
Have to agree with you. IMO, after the first two years Cougar started gaining weight and getting gaudy and overly "made up". So many people don't understand how to use vent windows and floor vents. I have an entry level '67 Cougar, picked it up as a project car. I wasn't looking for a Cougar specifically but I'm glad I have it. It will get a restomod with a vintage twist.
Agreed. The mid-70s Cougars were still pretty good, but it was definitely on a big-and/or-boxy evolutionary track up until the mid 80s. For me, its low point was the 80-82 station wagon.

I worked at a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership during the Cougar's run. The sunroofs mentioned were mechanically terrible and they leaked horribly after a while. The Ghias with the houndstooth were visually enough to make you ill. 😝
I remember growing you could geta a model car of a Cougar in the bottom of a cereal box .I think I was just as excited about that then the person buying one at the dealership.
When I came back from Vietnam I brought a used 69 Cougar. I was still in the military and made good use of it's smooth ride over long distances going from base to base. I like the solid grill over the split grill. The only recurring problem I had with mine was the windows. The glass was glued to the metal frame that attached to the regulator. They would come unglued and the whole window would lift completely out of the door.
I had a 1972 Mercury Cougar (all white with a red interior) when I was in my 20s. In my whole life, I've only had one car accident that was my fault, and it was in that Cougar. I rear-ended a Mustang, of all things. The Mustang was fine, but the nose of the Cougar dipped when I slammed on the brakes and the grille hit flush on the bumper in front of me. It crushed the front end. I spent an entire summer in my dad's garage rebuilding the front end of that Cougar from junk-yard parts. Good memories, really. I personally like the second generation of Cougar better than the first generation (although I liked the first generation convertible best). The second generation looks beefier and more muscular than the first generation.
My mom bought a 67 after her 65 mustang rolled over when my brother was driving it. I had a 70XR7 which was the last year of the first generation. It had a high po 351 Cleveland and the C6 auto trans. I should have never let it go

Mine too.. 69 Cougar xr7 Silver jade.. 1988 I was 16. Beat the snot out of it, great car. Traded it in on a 88 Turbo Coupe 3 years later

Never owned any of the first generation cougars. I did own a1971 cougar xr-7 . Grabber lime green , dark green interior and a full green vinyl top. Had a 351 Cleveland 4 barrel with quench heads. It was the 14 th built for the 71 model year. Miss the car and the memories!!
When I was a kid, an older gentleman on my street owned a Cougar from around 67. It was baby blue with a white or black top. (it's been over 50 years). I always thought the sequential tail lights were so cool. They were gorgeous cars.
When I was 17 years old my dad worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealership,
Every night he’d bring home a different car
One night he brought home a 69 Cougar with a 429 4-speed,
I think it had been ordered as a race car because it was very basic,
it didn’t even have a radio or heater,
After taking my brother and I for a very spirited drive he let us take it for a drive,
That Cougar was the fastest car I’ve ever driven

I use to flat dust those Cougars in my Dodge's. Sometimes I'd let a 17 yr. old catch up, to make em feel like "Billy badasses.". And as I could see em with that Billy badass look on their face, I'd look out the window and suggest they get a carwash. I didn't mention it would be to get all that Dodge dust off em.

I had a green '67 289-4 bbl. 3-speed. What a blast and my good friend had a black XR-7 390 auto.
I had a 1969 Cougar and absolutely loved it! I bought it in the early seventies and drove it for about ten years before family needs forced a trade to a station wagon (hate to admit I traded my beloved cougar for a station wagon!) about ten years later. To this day I regret having sold that car. It is still one of the best-looking cars of that era...or today for that matter.

My best friend in high school had a 1968 Cougar XR7. Dark green, black vinyl top, black leather interior. 302 with 4 barrel and dual exhaust. Fully loaded with a stunning wood dash filled with instruments. It was a gorgeous car and we had more way fun in that Cougar than should be allowed. Thanks for the memories!

I love my first gen Cougar XR7, brought her home from California in 1996. Factory AC, 4 spd, rust free survivor, never driven in a rainy day, ever.
In 1967, I took a tour of the Ford Milpitas, CA assembly plant. To my surprise, they were assembling both Mustang & Cougars on the same line at the same time! Underneath, they are the same car (Cougar had a slightly longer wheel base).

I owned a 1969 COUGAR in high school in 1981 and is my favorite muscle car.
A 1970 Cougar was my first car purchased in my high school senior year of 1978. Plain Jane model blue exterior, blue interior. 351 Windsor. I added the chrome ford GT slotted wheels which had a beauty ring. And radial TA's. I was very proud of the car. Basically, washed and waxed it every couple of days. It was a beauty. Only wish it had a few more options that it did. But still a great Saturday nite cruiser for a high school kid.

67 is my fav. My dad worked for Ford Asrosoace in Newport Beach, he & my mom attended a private unveiling of the 67 Cougar at a hotel. A live cougar lay on the roof of a white Cougar.

In 1975 I had a 1970 cougar, red with a black vinyl top and cragar mags big v8 engine. Really turned some heads. Man I had some good times in that car. Good memories.

Used to have a '67. I had no idea that it was selected as Car of the Year. Go figure. LOL! 🙃
It was the XR-7 model. One of the favorite features was the windshield's "wash" mode...It was a miniature "gas pedal" for the left foot. Translate: Just rest foot in that location. If you're on the highway and the windshield gets dirty, simply push the pedal and immediately let go. Wipers run one cycle while the windshield "gets a bath". Repeat if needed. Press and hold and it remains running until you let go. EXTREMELY easy to drive with aclean windshield 100% of the time. The other fave was the seats: When in it, one was sitting--or so it felt--in more of a "toboggan" than in a car. Very kick back with a steering wheel in your lap. Then...umm...GO. FAST. Hehe!

The ‘67 Cougar is one of my favorite cars since I was a kid. My dad had a friend that bought one and I remember coming home from school and seeing them turning wrenches on it almost everyday. Today I still excited when I see one and it is one of my favorite Hot Wheels to customize. Thanks for the awesome videos!

The 1st gen Cougar was a real looker. I remember when it was released. It was clean and elegant. It really did seem a step up from ordinary American cars. Ford tried to milk it and present it as a thinking man's sporty car. The strategy worked pretty well. Even now those early Cougars look classy.

Love the first generation, but you forgot to mention the high performance version, and my third favorite muscle car of all time: the 428 CJ Cougar Eliminator. I think a Boss 302 was available, and finding one with a Boss 429 is slim to none.

You could get the Boss 302 as part of the Eliminator Package. I remember one sitting in a dealers shop for almost a year because of the higher price to get it.
67 had the base w 289, xr7, gt 390.
68 had base w 302 new for 68, xr7 gt, gt-e 7liter 427 side oiler first 1/2, 428 cj second 1/2, Dan gurney special.
69, 70 body change, that's when the eliminator came out.
I had a 67, wished I still had it. New a guy who had a 68 gt-e xr7, after 70 they got big.
But later in life I got a 85, just got married and was a great car.
My best friend had a 69 XR-7 with a 351 Windsor. The car was fun to cruise the stip with. Got pulled over several times for the sequential blinkers.

We owned a '68 Cougar and a '67 Camero RS at the same time. Then a 3rd child came along and both ended up being replaced by a station wagon. The Cougar was and still is my wife's favorite car. More attractive and advanced than the Mustang, I don't understand why they're not more sought after today. What a beautiful and great car!! Thanks for memory lane.
I owned a 1970 XR7 351 C , great motor. , stall speed , 3.73 posi ,,Fun car to drive,,,got me in a lot of trouble. .Hard not to hammer it ,,,that built Cleveland engine sounded beautiful going thru the gears.

My first car was a 69 Cougar XR7 I got in 1976 for $950. It had the 351 Cleveland engine, the tilt away wheel, power windows & leather seats!! It was dark jade with a white vinyl top!!! Other than having to put the driver's window back on the track every once in a month the car was great, I wish I still had it!!! Thanks for sharing this exciting video!!! 👍👍🙂
My 69 Mach 1 had the same terrible glue in glass so I swapped it out with a 70 bolt-in setup I pulled at the auto wreckers

67 Cougar XR7, THAT I owned was a very sweet ride. Great handling, and the 289 gave it plenty of performance.
Traded it in on new 69 XR7, with a 351 Cleveland! WooHoo. That was my favorite ever.

This was a great looking car. It had a really bad blind spot in the back behind the driver. I had two friends that had a cougar and both were killed doing a u turn pulling infront of a oncoming car.
My favorite has always been the 68. I've owned one for the last 25 yrs. XR7 model. Originally it was Wellington Blue. It's about 2 weeks out from being back on the road after 20 + yrs!

Great video guys! Love your Channel. I think the Mercury Cougar is one of the most amazing cars ever produced. In my 60 years I've had many cougars of various model years. Most recently a 1977 XR7 that my parents ordered and purchased new when the 77 model year came out in late 76. This is the car I got my first driver's license in. To this day the car has just 36,000 original miles on it. Please continue your series on the cougar up through and including 1977 and newer. Perhaps all the way up through the last cougar ever made. Keep up the good work guys!

great video! I worked at a dealership (Village Lincoln Mercury in 1967. my job was to deliver new cars to several dealers in the area a customer ordered a fully equipped Cougar big block etc. i almost got fired for smoking the tires pulling out of the driveway ! it was fast!!

My dad had a 1967 Mercury cougar XR7 with a 390 Marauder under the hood. Backed up my automatic transmission. It was an awesome car.
I owned a brand new 67 Cougar with a high perf. 289 with a 4 bbl, light blue with a black vinyl roof. One of the most fun cars I have ever had. Sadly it was rear ended in 1971 and written off. Loved that car! Thanks for the memories.
I had two Cougars. A Silver 1976 XR7 with a Cleveland 351 V8 engine. More luxury than sporty, but still a hot car. My second Cougar was a 2000 XR7 they called the color Sapphire I thought it was darker than that. I was considering buying a Chrysler Sebring Convertible then, but I went looking at cars with my sister and we took a look at the Cougar. When we poped the hood and I saw that 24 Valve DOHC Duratec V6 on the valve cover, I was sold. I had that car for 17 years and put over 210,000 miles on it. I only traded it in because water pump, power steering pump and most of the original hoses and belts were worn out and desperately in need of replacing. I think my favorite generation was the first and if I was economically able to buy one in those days my first choice would be the 69 Convertible.

I had a ‘70 Cougar convertible, way back in 1985. Parts were plentiful in salvage yards, and the car got a lot of smiles and thumbs up.
Back in the late 70s early 80s I had a 72 and then a 73 XR7. Loved them both, great cars.
In High School, I drove a 1976 Mercury Montego MX (Very similar to the Cougar). It was black on black with a 351 engine. I also put on Crager Rims. Great Car. 👍
Enjoyed this video. I fell in love with the '67 and what it was to the Mustang only after buying my first car - a 92 XR7, 5.0, black on black. My parents wouldn't let me buy the Mustang of it's year due to fears of my crashing it (understandably!), so I settled on Cougar. Had that car 14 years, and enjoyed it very much - probably way more than I would have enjoyed a Mustang. I wish Ford still had a Mercury/Lincoln equivalent to Mustang.

The first car I ever purchased was a 1970 white houndstooth Cougar that I bought in 1978. I was 17. 351 Cleveland engine, FMX trans and a posi rear end. The drivetrain was so tight it would bark third gear in drive. Oh my God that thing was fast! The speedo meter had a little bend to the left from slapping the post at 120mph! And could turn on a dime. Only thing I didn't like was that damn beak on the hood. Got a lot of bruises on my head from it. Never lost a drag race against a stock 350 and most races against 340's. I was drifting in it long before drifting was a thing. And man, the girls loved it!
My '70 still runs strong. Owned it since '85.
I had a 68 cougar and a 72 XR-7. Both were great cars for when I owned them.

The first car I bought from a car dealership was a 1970 XR7, Baby Blue, with a White Vinyl Top, Leather Interior and 351C. Man that think would scream! I had a lot of fun in that car and not counting my street rods, was the best car I ever owned! Can't afford one now though! LOL Thanks for the video, it brought back some good memories for me. 🤠

As the original owner of a 1972 Cougar XR7 convertible that I ordered with the exact options I wanted, she has to be my favorite. I also am the care giver of a 1969 Cougar Eliminator, with its Competition Yellow paint she attracts a lot of attention. Both are still to drive.
I own a seventy two convertible with a 351 Cleveland. Man I miss that car! Bought it for $80.00. Rebuilt the motor for $900 and drove it for several yrs before the frame finally failed

My dad bought a brand new 68 Cougar as his fun car. Yellow with a black vinyl top. 390 2V GT with automatic.
When I turned 16 took my drivers test in it. Within 10 minutes was at our local drag race stretch of road. Had to wipe the rear quarter panels with gasoline to get the burnt rubber off before I took it home.
Several years later I bought a 69 Cougar. 390 2V (non GT). Pulled it and put in a built 289 with 4 speed. Fun cars with a unique style.
I always loved the Mercury Cougar… Even though my parents owned a Mustang in 1970. somebody in my neighborhood had a decked out 1970 mercury cougar purple in color with mag wheels. It was just so bad ass. I fell in love with that car.
That's a very special car the last year of the body style to. My favorite cougar was the 1970 Cougar when I was a kid I thought it was a spaceship because I seen it at night with the backlight on and the hideaways down I was baffled I couldn't believe it. I have on the 1969 XR7 and the 1970 base cougar which I own now. Needs to be restored though 😃👍

I own a 67 390 GT. Such a cool and unique car. Ive owned it for 5 years now. Its definitely staying permanently in my stable of classic cars.
The first generation is my favorite. I've got a 1967 Cougar XR7 Dan Gurney Special.
Along with a a 67 Mustang Fastback I later had a rare 67 Cougar GT 390 4 spd. So similar package to the McQueen car in the movie Bullitt. Most performance optioned Cougars I ever saw were XR-7s and my cousin Joe had a green one which he got after coming home from Nam. My GT was a real sleeper with whitewall tires and hubcaps. Since it had no headrests for that year my favorite was taking someone for a ride and watching them grab their neck like their heads was going to come off from the acceleration. It was a power steering delete so "armstrong" was the order of the day with that big block up front... It later became my drag race car. Lots of good times with that car and my first girlfriend helping out at the drag strip... Great fun then!
My second car (bought in ‘72) was a 1967 Cougar XR7 with light green metallic paint and black vinyl top. It had the rally wheels with white letter tires. It had the 289 2-V so it was the least powerful engine, but had plenty of power. Of all the cars I owned, I’d rate it the best exterior styling and an awesome interior. Only one issue. The cooling system could best be described as a lemon. I went through two radiators and two water pumps during the 18 months I owned it in addition to hose replacements… left me stranded on faraway day trips three times. But I still wish I owned it. I always drove Lincoln Mercury Ford vehicles as a young man and have many fond memories of those high performing stylish cars.
Always remember having to replace water pumps, starters and alternators every few years was the only problem.
I grew up watching my my dad daily drive and race his 68 xrz gt, witch is still driven on a regular basis. I still continue to love his and have taken after him I drive an 89 xr7 sc.
Thank you for the effort in the video. The footage was nice to see. Looking forward to the future parts of the Mercury Cougar story. I liked the ones from 1977-1979, and some of the 80's models, the last general. They were nice when equipped with digital clusters and those cloth interiors.

My buddy bought a 68 Cougar brand new, was a real beauty! It had a 302, Cobra Kit solids and 4 barrel carb with 3 on the floor. Great fun to drive and quick too!
A guy I know had one when we were in high school. Blue '68 I believe with 351Windsor transplant, slightly warmed up. The sequential tail lights were cool and she moved pretty good.
I've never been a fan of the Mustang. But the first gen Cougar was a nice looking car.

My favorite of the 1st gen Cougars was the '69. It was perfect from every angle, which rarely happens. Oddly enough, and I know this will sound weird, it skips ahead after that to the '77-'79 gen which I really love. An X-R7 of one of those years would make me very happy, along with a '74 or '75 Monte Carlo with the singular round headlights making it a 'Rolls Royce' for ordinary Americans. You know, the people our government hates more than anything.
I owned a 1967 Cougar , XR7, GT, 390 engine , 4 speed ,Dan Gurney Special. Black with black vinyl roof Red Maroon interior. my junior year in collage. Got it new at the local Mercury dealer at a discounted price. It was originally ordered by someone else but it came through without a center console .The buyer refused the car because the stick just came out of the carpeted trans hump.. Great car that I wish I had today. Great performer that could not only keep up with the Vettes of the era. I've heard that it now owned by a local landscaper , that I'll have to locate.

When I was young I had a 1967 and a 1969 Cougar…. Both of these cars have become my lifetime favorites…. Although I was the 4 th owner of the 1969 it was well maintained and a beautiful car. White leather interior, white vinyl top and burnt orange color, it looked spectacular in person.
First generation was by far my favorite, and I missed out on a couple chances to buy one back in the early eighties. Second generation and then the sixth and seventh generation cars are high on my list as well. The eighth is not even worthy of the name.
I never owned the one I wanted, but I owned it's spiritual successor an '82 Mercury Capri 5.0 and I also owned a huge '78 Cougar. Loved them both for opposite reasons.

Bought 71 Cougar in Sep 70 when I got home from Vietnam. Loved the look and the drive. 2 children and 2 dogs later had to trade it for a damn station wagon

Got my license in 1982 driving my parent's brand new 1978 Cougar. First and ONLY new car they ever bought. My Mom babied that thing like you wouldn't believe. When they finally sold it....the body still looked pretty good. Still love the 67-68 years more though. What a boat the 78 was though.....
the 67 cougar was the first new car i ever bought and i loved the car but the sequential taillights were a problem, i had to carry extra bulbs with me all the time as the bulbs would always burn out in the back lights, and like someone below said, the mercury cars always had a better build quality to them than fords. the grand marquis is another fine example of this.

What you couldn't mention the Cougar Eliminator?,wasn't their a Dan Gurney option available on the "First" generation also.
Eliminator didn't come out until 1969. There was a Dan Gurney option on the 1967 and 1968.

the 1969-70 were the best 2 years and arguably one of the best looking cars of its day. Loved the creased character line up the sides, and the grills looked the best. The car was gorgeous and resembled a smaller Charger look. Not big on the 67 and 68 models, but they were certainly better looking than the Mustangs. Not a Ford guy, but I used to have a 69 Cougar XR7. Sweet car.

I had always considered the '67 and '68 as "first generation". In my humble opinion, the best looking car ever made. I know opinions differ, but to me, starting in 1969, the looks went slowly downhill. If I were rich, I would choose one of these first two years of Cougar to drive over anything else period.
I think the more aggressive side window of the 69 is the best. My family had a 71 and it was great, but the 69 to me is ‘it’.
Have to agree with you. IMO, after the first two years Cougar started gaining weight and getting gaudy and overly "made up".
So many people don't understand how to use vent windows and floor vents. I have an entry level '67 Cougar, picked it up as a project car. I wasn't looking for a Cougar specifically but I'm glad I have it. It will get a restomod with a vintage twist.
Agreed. The mid-70s Cougars were still pretty good, but it was definitely on a big-and/or-boxy evolutionary track up until the mid 80s. For me, its low point was the 80-82 station wagon.

I worked at a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership during the Cougar's run. The sunroofs mentioned were mechanically terrible and they leaked horribly after a while. The Ghias with the houndstooth were visually enough to make you ill. 😝
I remember growing you could geta a model car of a Cougar in the bottom of a cereal box .I think I was just as excited about that then the person buying one at the dealership.
Had a 70 XR 7 in 1979. Coolest car in my high school parking lot. The girls just loved it. Lol
When I came back from Vietnam I brought a used 69 Cougar. I was still in the military and made good use of it's smooth ride over long distances going from base to base. I like the solid grill over the split grill. The only recurring problem I had with mine was the windows. The glass was glued to the metal frame that attached to the regulator. They would come unglued and the whole window would lift completely out of the door.
I had a 1972 Mercury Cougar (all white with a red interior) when I was in my 20s. In my whole life, I've only had one car accident that was my fault, and it was in that Cougar. I rear-ended a Mustang, of all things. The Mustang was fine, but the nose of the Cougar dipped when I slammed on the brakes and the grille hit flush on the bumper in front of me. It crushed the front end. I spent an entire summer in my dad's garage rebuilding the front end of that Cougar from junk-yard parts. Good memories, really. I personally like the second generation of Cougar better than the first generation (although I liked the first generation convertible best). The second generation looks beefier and more muscular than the first generation.

My mom bought a 67 after her 65 mustang rolled over when my brother was driving it. I had a 70XR7 which was the last year of the first generation. It had a high po 351 Cleveland and the C6 auto trans. I should have never let it go
