PONTIAC GRAND PRIX : SEE WHY IT WAS SO POPULAR

  • Pontiac, now dead and gone, was once a premier performance car brand in America, unleashing monsters on the streets like the GTO and Trans Am with V8 power and awesome looks. While Pontiac built a reputation with those incredible models, the Oil Crisis hit, and the brand slipped to relative mediocrity through the '90s. As a result, things didn't get better for Pontiac, which was shuttered in order to save GM from bankruptcy in 2010.
This was largely due to the release of some truly mediocre or even terrible models - like the Aztek. But, one popular model that stuck around with the brand was the Grand Prix, originally introduced in 1962 as a powerful, full-size personal luxury car, and turned into a rather average economy car by its later years.
This is the story of the Pontiac Grand Prix

My best school job was when I washed and detailed well over 5,000 Pontiacs at the dealership where my Dad sold cars from 1976 - 1979. The Grand Prix was such a beautiful car and I remember the exterior and interior so well I could describe it well enough for an artist to draw it. The car was wonderful to drive and to clean! L) Beautiful!

During the 1960-70's, Pontiac made some of the most Beautiful cars! The Catalina and Bonneville were so Big and Sharp looking for a child like me at the time! But as a teenager during the mid to late 70's, the Grand Prix was Gorgeous!!!

I had a 77 GP with a 301 engine. What a POS! A measly 135 HP from a V8, which always pinged no matter how the carb was tweaked or what kind of gas what used. Yes, the car looked great but that was the end of it. BTW, the engine went down as the the worst in history.

So I liked the Grand Prix, too .. the 1978 / 79 model of course for the size .. also Malibu, Monte Carlo, Seville and so on! 👍🏼✨
Today US cars are only Teslas and a little bit Mustangs, Camaros and minimal Cadillacs.. that’s sad..

My grandmother had a red on red ‘77 GP and some of my first car memories were in that car. My first car was a two-tone silver ‘86 Grand Prix SJ with bucket seats and a console. I loved that car and it survived a theft attempt (caught them in the act and had broken the steering column and were about to break the steering lock and would have had it in 10 more seconds) only to have a little old lady turn left in front of me and I locked them up trying to keep from t-boning into her passenger’s door. I have lasting neck damage from that wreck (21 then, 49 now) and I will never forget that car!

My first car, in 84, was a 76 GP-white, white landau roof, and red vinyl buckets. It had a factory power sunroof and power windows. I was smitten and would love to have it back today. I think the 76x with new rectangular lights not separated by the parking light was the best front end of that generation. But I did like the 77 tail lamp with the GP logo.

I agree with you Mike, for the reasons you mentioned. Actually, same for me with the Monte Carlo. I hated the Chevelle front end on the '76 and '77 Montes with the squared stacked headlights. I'm giving the '76 GP a pass because the square headlights were right next to each other, and the waterfall grill from above was sexy. The front end on the '77, no.

I think a day doesn't go by without me thinking about my 76 LJ. Kept it for over 17 years till those heavy doors were so rusted out. So much for Rusty Jones. I worked with a guy whose son in law had a dealership. He gave friends a deal you couldn't refuse. For a little over $5100.00 I was able to factory order my GP. My LJ came with the 400 engine , 400 turbo, and a posi rear end. A deep oxblood with gold stripping, padded landau roof. Inside was tall velour buckets, high pile carpeting, gauge package, console, air, 4 speaker stereo. What a beauty. Never felt the road. It was so long. I'm still a GP fan and owner still except my 05 GP GT can't compare. But I like it. Especially the HUD. I'll hold on to it as long as I can. Only goes out in warm weather, sleeps in the garage from fall till spring.

Ive also had a 1981, 1985 Grand Prix and also, currently have a 1987 Grand Prix with the 4.3 V-6 that gets 19 mpgs in the city and plenty of power. GM has the best and really needs to get back to making these cars again with strong motors and transmissions to deliver power and economy and satisfy the drivers!!! 😊

My Great Uncle Eddie was a lifelong Lincoln salesman in West Covina Ca, Eddie was a smooth bachelor, he smoked cigars, bet on horses, Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Hollywood park, Eddie golfed,, wore Johnny Carson suits, he lived in a swinging apartment complex, everyone knew Eddie in the inland empire, he sold cars to wealthy people who became his friends and when Eddie was a friend, he was the best friend you ever had!

I recall one year aftr my Mom married a Vietnam vet sniper who was crazy and he pulledd my hair in front of Eddie, big mistake.
Eddie classily invited my stepdad out back to talk to him, my stepdad obviously knew smething was up and he was 6 ft 4 over 230 lbs!
My stepdad tried to put it off when Eddie put his arm around his shoulder, even though he was 4 inches shorter, and i sneaked to the window ro peek at what was going on, as soon as they rounded the corner out of view from the rest I saw Eddie grab a handful of hair above my stepdads ear on the side of his head and yank his head then shove him into the wall which was heard inside the house and then rip out a huge handful of hair with a giant downstroke, my stepdad had long hair and Eddie was standing there with a handful of long hairs enough to put on a doll , Eddie said, If I ever see a mere appearance of a problem with you and Keith, my voice is going to be the last thing you ever hear, you got that?
My stepdad was groveling and cowering, it made me feel great to see that happen to him, he used to wack me with his belt but made me pull my pants down and bend over the edge of the bed first! I never told Eddie or knew could before then. It was nice to know somebody big was looking out for me. My Mom was freaked out seeing a huge BALD SPOT ON THE SIDE OF HIS HEAD! Eddie volunteered that a drill b it snagged his hair as he was showing Eddie his drill, my Mom accepted it but I could tell she was not buyiung it.

My father had a ‘63 and then a ‘77 Grand Prix and my first car was a SJ ‘79 Grand Prix. I loved all three! The ‘77 had the too small, imo, 301 V8 four barrel. My ‘79 also had the 301 V8 four barrel and that engine certainly wasn’t a super fast engine, but it was a little quicker off the line than the much larger ‘77 with the 4.9 liter V8. I also had an ‘84 black Trans Am. ☺️I miss the Pontiac motor division but after seeing what it evolved into by the 1990s I can certainly see why Pontiac enthusiasts lost that lovin’ feeling for them🙄. I sure did. It’s a shame what GM let happen to Pontiac. Long live these “classic” Pontiacs!

@@jameskrich6118 Hey James! How are you? I know that this will probably sound funny, but when I was a child collecting Hot Wheels during the late 1960's, I had a Hot Wheels Firebird car and I thought that it was a beautiful little die cast vehicle! Before I knew a great deal about the Automotive Industry, that little car had me hooked on the Firebird Cars! As I began to grow older, I learned the importance of the Union and Family Loyalty too! My father worked at Chrysler Corporation's Trim Plant in Detroit and my mother, Champion Spark Plugs Corporation. Until my brother began working at GM, I became a fan of MOPAR! I 💕 loved the Plymouth Division the most, especially The Fury III's!!! But the Pontiac and Oldsmobile Divisions of GM made the cars which appealed to me! The 1 exception was the Buick Riviera with the Boat Tail. Now that was a car!!! And even though I never owned a Pontiac Trans Am, the IROC's and The Firebird Firehawk appealed to me the most since those late 60's, early 70's models! But it was buying that little Firebird Convertible by Hot Wheels that did it for me! By the time I reached 14, I lost track of all of those toys, but as I grew up, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Plymouth created some of the best American Made Cars on the planet! But I began working for Chrysler just like my father when he lived, so my loyalty was too MOPAR!!! And now that I am disabled, after 19 years, my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo's transmission, gearbox and driveshaft stopped all at once, I bought a 2015 GMC Terrain. But if I ever get in a position where I have a place with a multi-car garage and can afford another vehicle, I will try to find a used Firehawk to purchase. ✌️
