    The combination Dr. Cliff and the community within the comments of this video is really refreshing. With that said, all of this confirms my assumptions. I’m going to wait for tech to get better. I’m thinking of just getting something more basic and inexpensive to improve my hearing which is perfect in my right ear). I’m very much functional with my SSD from acoustic neuroma but it sure would be nice to hear just a little bit better. I was thinking of an antique ear trumpet, then decided to see what’s new and found Dr. Cliff’s other videos, which led me here.

    I recently had surgery to fix a dehiscence on my right side. I had the left side done in January. 2 days post surgery I had to go back to the hospital due to extreme vertigo. Ever since then I have had no hearing in my right ear. Surgery was 9/1. We are currently trying shots directly into the ear to get into the middle ear and continuing prednisone. As of now there are no changes. This video gives me hope of some sort of normalcy if I don’t regain any hearing.

    Early in 2021 I tested the high end rechargeable Phonak bi-cross. In a restaurant when a waitress spoke to me on my deaf side, I could not hear her. It was obvious that I would have to turn to face her to hear what she was saying. In my hearing ear (mild loss) it was a revelation hearing all kinds of high pitched clicks and scrapes, but the problem of hearing people speaking in a somewhat noisy environment, like in a restaurant, when they weren't speaking directly to my hearing side, did not get solved. With great difficulty, I managed to get my money refunded by Yeshearing before the 45 day trial period ended. The ridiculously high prices charged by hearing aid companies is scandalous, even taking into account that it includes the services of either an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist.

    Great channel!!! I have SSD due to Menieres in my left ear. While the Menieres symptoms have gone away for the most part, the left ear is all but useless, especially directionally. HOWEVER, for some crazy reason, I still hear better with both ears, rather than for instance an earplug in the bad side or a mono audio signal. My ENT of record is John House at the House Ear Institute in LA but I'll also be working in PHX next month and need to get fitted for IEMs. Do you recommend digital ear canal scans or traditional impressions? AND, should I get my scans or impressions done at one of your approved providers here in Florida where if there's a problem with the fit I can go in easily? Thanks! Robert

    Having tried the old Cross talk system from Phonak, this sounds like a big improvement, the old system lacked almost all the features available in the rest of Phonaks line up, and I was devastated when I got home after my fitting and realised they didn't even work with the phonak app! At the time, just about a year ago, they were the same price as M90s, which fortunately were an alternative way to treat my reverse curve SSD, and which gave me so many more features over the Cross option, im lucky to have gotten away with being able to go for the M90s, but its great to see some more of the higher end technologies being pushed into the rest of the less lucrative end of the lineup by Phonak!

      @@dogsop that's a pity, it's a big loss for this device, the app isn't amazing for the M90, but it is useful and I would definitely miss it, being able to set up specific profiles is great, and autosense is good, but being able to make on the go adjustments is really important when your blocking your working hearing ear with a device. I found in some situations it just sounded like I was just using a cheap headphone in my hearing ear because it wasn't adjusting to my surroundings.

    • @dogsop
      @dogsop 2 года назад +1

      @@TheJoyofAquascaping It isn't quite as bad as it seems. It is still a huge improvement from my previous CROS device (CROS B?) that had nothing but a single ON/OFF button. The new device has the same toggle switch (UP/DOWN) as the regular Paradise and between the switch on the CROS transmitter and the switch on the other unit you can control volume, balance between the two units, and you can even toggle between (pre-set) programs. For mine I have the long press on the CROS unit set to toggle between two programs. It is nothing like what I could do with the app but it is so far beyond what the last generation CROS units could do. You do get Bluetooth streaming and call support even though you don't get app integration.

    Dear Dr. Cliff, your video has been very informative and helpful. I came back here to try to see if anyone's got an issue with the new Phonak CROS P in terms of battery life (rechargeable model). In my case, I got my P90 in March and a full charge can basically last me the whole day like 17-18 hours with no issue. Then I got the new CROS P when it became available in September and I found using the CROS P with a P90 reduced the battery life for my P90 to about 12 hours (and even 10 hours if some bluetooth is used during the day). I saw at least one of the persons making comment here (Dogsop Smith) seems to suggest the same thing? Have you seen or heard of this issue from any of your other patients? Finally, could this be a problem with a subpar charger (then the solution could be to get a new and good charger) or it's really due to the CROS draining the battery on a paired P90? Thanks

    I have a highly asymmetrical hearing loss due to recurrent cholesteatomas in both ears. In my right ear the loss is in 80-100 dB range for low to mid frequencies and ~115 dB in high frequencies, and for left ear the loss is at 40-50 dB in low frequencies, 20-30 dB in mid frequencies and 70-80 dB in high frequencies. I've been using a government-issued Rexton hearing aids for quite a while now, but I have saved some money and have been thinking about purchasing a better pair. With my current pair I still experience head-shadow effect and whistling quite a bit.
    I was wondering, if there are any BiCROS technologies that still amplify sound in the "bad" ear? Or is the hearing aid on the "bad" ear just to route sound to the other ear?
    I've been slowly trying to educate myself on the topic to help me make a better decision.

Assume this is your point about gaining back some localization of sound for those suffering from SSHL (i.e. register & sense direction of sudden "noise" coming from your bad side?)

    I'm in my late 20s and have 50% loss of hearing in my left ear but my right ear works 100%. What would you recommend for treatment,treatments I've done a low dose of prednisone pills first and some nasal spray.. Now my ent put me on a higher stronger longer dose of prednisone,also ordered an MRI scan to see if there might be a mass that might be preventing me from hearing. Also if they do find a mass on the MRI scan would they be able to remove the mass to bring my hearing back to normal? Can you please possibly answer my questions

      Don't worry until you get the result of your CAT scan. There might be nothing for you to worry about. My hubby is very anxious , and his doctor just told him not to jump to conclusions. Take one step at a time.
      Of course, there are surgical solutions.

The graphic at 4:15 in this video only says CROS P-R and CROS P-13, and doesn't mention BiCROS. Thanks in advance for clarifying. I currently use a three year-old Starkey BiCROS system.

    Hi Dr. Cliff - many thanks for the CROS-P review, in fact. all of your reviews - they are so helpful! I have decided to upgrade from my B-90 CROS setup but now I am hesitant because I see that the CROS-P user manual states: "Your CROS system can be connected to one device at a time and paired to up to eight devices." One of the motivations was to eliminate the confusion when I am watching TV (ComsPilot) and the phone rings. Is it possible to pair the CROS to the phone and the P-90 to the TV at the same time?

    Does the Phonak CROS Paradise (or any product, for that matter) have a solution for discerning sound direction? E.g., is there a CROS system that provides haptic stimulation? It would take just the tiniest sensation behind each ear for your brain to learn to use it for localization.
    I have SSD and one of the most dangerous consequences is that when I'm in the street and hear a car coming up on me I can't tell which side it's on. Half the time I swivel my head to the wrong side, and boy does that ever annoy drivers (if they even see me). Other risky situations are hearing sirens while driving, and hearing a smoke detector in a house that has several.

It would have been nice to catch this early, as the earlier treatment is started, the better the outcome. Sadly, too many leave it for too long and think that they can't do anything about it, when in truth they can, and the drugs are far safer than OTC drugs like Tylenol. Frankly it's frustrating to see people who could save their hearing if only they could be treated with antivirals. Some claim that antivirals don't work, but I've read too many accounts where one has had their hearing loss essentially halted by using long-term antiviral treatment.

    Even when the good ear does not need hearing assistance, the use of CROS introduces occlusion from the unit in the good ear repeating sound from the bad side. BiCROS downside is it essentially eliminates the natural sound you could hear in the good ear. BiCROS is really a last resort.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  2 года назад +1

      CROS only introduces occlusion in the better ear if you have too small of venting for the loss in the better ear. If you have normal hearing in the better ear and you experience occlusion, your provider fit it incorrectly. A BICROS setup is necessary to restore hearing in the better ear with hearing loss.

    Thanks for all the informative videos to help us cope with hearing loss and select capable providers. I have no hearing in one ear and moderate hearing loss in the other. Recently received my first hearing aids (Oticon More 3 and CROS PX). Was unsure about the efficacy of the BiCros product but decided to give it a try when they released a CROS option compatible with the Oticon More product.
    With CROS PX properly configured should I be able to hear someone whisper into my deaf ear or conduct a phone call (land line) with the receiver on my deaf ear? I know I would hear the sound in my other ear but don’t know how the CROS microphones pick up and process various sounds. If the CROS microphone is set up to compensate for a 7 db sound shadow effect then I doubt it would transfer of sound the from a phone receiver or a whisper to the better where the loss is probably more than 7 db.
    I can’t see how CROS would help directional hearing. Lack of directional hearing/localization is the most significant consequence of single sided hearing loss for me. (Very frustrating when I can’t locate my ringing phone)

      Hi Myron-I have used the BiCros system for years now so I think I can help answer your questions. I have no usable hearing in my right ear and a severe loss in my left (better!) ear. I have a Signia BiCros system (not the Audeo Paradise being discussed here but I think this info will still apply).
      I definitely cannot hear someone whispering into my deaf ear (but I do have a more severe loss in my better ear than you do!).
      If the landline receiver is put where the Cros transmitter microphones are located, then I will hear the sound in my better ear. The landline receiver is not placed over my deaf ear but rather in a spot where the transmitter will pick up the sound (I had to play with it to find this “sweet spot”) and transmit it to my other ear.
      The BiCros system definitely does not help to localize sound since everything I hear comes from my left side so I tend to always turn to my left when I hear a sound. But, I have learned to quickly correct when I turn left and the origin of the sound is not there! (I agree that not being able to localize sound is very frustrating but hearing a sound on the “wrong side” is still better than not hearing it at all, which is what it was like prior to using BiCros).
      All in all, I feel that the BiCros definitely changed my life for the better. I would definitely recommend it, even with its limitations. Hope this helps!!
