How a man of 26 that he was can write a song with such deep lyrics when he has only been in love once and is still with his first and only love, is astonishing, words and verses from a young man with much more experienced head came when he wrote that song.

My favorite song of all time and the Greatest Song ever written. The bass is like a hypnotizing heart beat that swells the soul with love, lust, and want. And Bono’s voice shares the pain and passion of wanting the person you love.
It had a heavy Disco beat. Just an awesome song and the original was perfection. You know Steve Perry always sounded better in concert but not these guys.
U2 is my go to music when I'm troubled. I play them every night when I can't sleep, listening attentively to the lyrics until I fall asleep. This is one of my favorite songs, next to Unforgettable Fire , which I wish was longer, but I like alk of their songs! I was a teenager in the 80s, and will love their music still the end. What an honor these four Irish guys have gifted the world ! ❤ Thank you Edge, Bono, Adam and Larry!!! You are loved by so many!

Could have ended up sounding so different, one of my favourites along with red hill mining town, and Bad 😊absolutely loved Bono since i was 14 and still do ❤
Both those songs are really poignant for me as well as being brilliant songs. Red Hill Mining Town which was written about the Miners Strike which happened during 1984-85 and decimated towns like Barnsley where I grew up and Bad which was written about the drugs problem in Dublin where my family is from and where I’ve lived for the past 30 years. I’ve not always been U2’s biggest fan but when they get it right they get it right on the money, Running to Stand Still is another highlighting Dublin’s then drugs problem where Bono’s lyrics blow me away and as for his speech during the Sunday Bloody Sunday Rattle and Hum film, sheer goosebumps and spine tingling.
Brilliant song, never thought it was pop. I personally find it very thought provoking on numerous levels considering whatever is going on in your life, you could relate it to different things. Thankyou U2.
What Bono? Producer Daniel Lanois created this sound with some help from Brian Eno. Lanois came on the scene with U2 when he produced Unforgettable Fire which put U2 at another level then went on to produce Joshua Tree and Actung Baby - 2 masterpieces and their best work to ever. And you don't even mention Lanois, the guy responsible for your best work and yes including With or Without You. Smh.
Bruce, chill out. Bono has discussed Daniel Lanois plenty of times, just not in this sound byte. Don’t you think he’s aware of Lanois’s brilliance for U2? Of course he is.
Hardly responsible, more of a facilitator. If he was responsible, then he's dumb for not having created his band and amass a net worth of at least 500M in the process.
I'm also not surprised to hear that Gavin had a hand in With or Without You. I once had a 20 minute conversation with Bono about how Gavin is one of the most underrated artists. Gavin is a genius and his own music is absolutely phenomenal!
I love that Bono has remained loyal to and supported Gavin Friday since the beginning. I believe they were childhood friends. Gavin Friday is a very underrated singer.
U2 is my favorite Band! I have been listening to them since the early 80s when I was a young teenager! I love the cranberries, Depeche Mode and the rest
I was lucky enough to see the song performed life at the LA Coliseum during the Joshua Tree tour. That album, and Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode (whom I saw at the Rose Bowl) were the backing tracks for what was one of the best years of my life.

Wow. What an alternative universe this would be if that song stayed in the trash. It’s so damn good I have several different versions of it. I’m a particular fan of the alternate ending of “we’ll shine like stars in the summer night…”
The interviewer doesn't get Bono,s Irish sarcastic sense of humour... The man is a legend and looks great for his age...No plastic or botox unlike a lot of his contemporaries...Ageing naturally
Wow. "With or Without You" was supposed to be a pop-psych song! And the band threw it in the trash. And a man, who was part of the band, but not a U2 artist, took that song from the trash, worked on it, and then that song became a forever trademark of U2! Amazing. My question is: why focussed on the way Bono looks? Is that the topic of conversation? I just saw him this past weekend in Las Vegas, U2, and honestly, I was not concerned about the way he looks. I have been a fan of U 2 for 30 years. Aging is part of human development . None of us will live for ever , and none of us we look at same after 40.Give this men respect, and anyone respect for that matter.
I feel like with many of the greatest songs, years later you end up hearing that the band almost got rid of it and that one person was responsible for saving it. I love that
All of that appears in the "Joshua Tree" the making documentary. They almost dumped "where the streets have no name" as well because the guitar intro was almost improssible to transition into the actual song (there's a huge tempo shift from the guitar intro into the song) and that was too much for Steve Lillywhite at the time, so that was 2nd tape that was dumped and pulled out of the trash. The whole album was a masterpiece that almost didn't make it to its completion because it got so hectic at some point.
My favorite U2 song, and group, since the 1st time I heard it when I was 9 years old in MI. I get to see them at the Sphere on 2/9....just shy of my 47th birthday. Love all of you and the amazing music you've brought into my life. 🙏
i hate to sound condescending, but the interviewer seems very adept and if he weren't a skilled interviewer, the interview would never had taken place... obviously it's not a causal conversation, and the man responsible for saving the song would not be touring with them if they didn't pay him, in royalties or otherwise., as cb88888 wrote, the fact that he acknowledged the song would be in the trash tells you everything about their relationship, and if the irony wasn't lost on you or me -- anyways, what >I meant to say is I love the song, it's one of the best love songs ever written..
Gavin's music is a cinematic motion picture experience. Brian Eno ambient tunes does made With or without you a certainly beautiful music to feel like drifting in a movie scene.
I adore With Or Without You. It’s an amazingly wonderful song. I honestly couldn’t ever say what I love about it but it’s special to me, in a way I can’t describe.
What I find so amazing about that song (and album) is it doesn’t sound like an era of music. A.k.a. it’s not an 80s song or a 90s song or a 70s song. It’s just an incredible song that sounds good all the time and doesn’t have a specific date attached to it.
That was a big start - we thought - it was psycho - kind of - it was understood - understandable the intentions - Ecc : and of course - the relationship of that sort had as well become - not ubiquitous but - kind of “recognised / acknowledged - no no - it wasn’t a pop song - it wasn’t the same mainstream like - pop songs. - it had something unfamiliar what the channel (?) concerns -- it took people in instantly (and of course we don’t want a guitar - life (opera version !!) (in my life it was accompanied by immediate accident (- a brother !) but that LP was on his stereo Hifi LP player - when I found him. - he fell afterwards into Coma …
You don't find many covers of U2 songs because they really are a mixture of all their DNA so they really only works for them. They remain unique and instantly recognizable. I'll be sad when their creative output is over.
Wow! I didn't know Friday had something to do with the creation of WOWY. That's something I don't understand from the copyright/songwriters world. Many people don't get their credit or potential royalties for their efforts. As an example, in the Beatles' songs Harrison & Ringo participated in most of their hits but they're registered as Lennon/McCartney. Strange!
How a man of 26 that he was can write a song with such deep lyrics when he has only been in love once and is still with his first and only love, is astonishing, words and verses from a young man with much more experienced head came when he wrote that song.

Beautiful song❤❤❤
Pay the man…Great song saved by the baldy sour.
I think he said, "nor will he ever". It would be good to explain that, however.
There goes my next question, he asked me to ask you. 😂
❤❤❤🎉🎉you love you u2 BRASIL❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
With or without you , that is one of my favorite, forever
Respect to Bono for giving credit where credit is due. A lot of people don’t do that….
He literally said the man would never be paid
i hate to sound condescending, but the interviewer seems very adept and if he weren't a skilled interviewer, the interview would never had taken place... obviously it's not a causal conversation, and the man responsible for saving the song would not be touring with them if they didn't pay him, in royalties or otherwise., as cb88888 wrote, the fact that he acknowledged the song would be in the trash tells you everything about their relationship, and if the irony wasn't lost on you or me -- anyways, what >I meant to say is I love the song, it's one of the best love songs ever written..
@@adolfosilva3883 But got a job for life instead. Been part of the U2 team since the start and still there.
Why wouldn't he be paid?
Dude looks like he’s 86 years old. 😮
he quit drinking children's blood recently
Bono of U2 is one of a kind...A Living Legend...i love you Bono ❤❤❤❤❤❤
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS PERIOD👍
Sounds Pathetic to Me.
Wonderful humility...
Gavin Friday. The band has never forgotten their roots ❤
When it comes to an Irish “you-know-what lover” 😜 😜 😜 WINK
You’ll never get paid, right bono??
This man has seen MANY up close!!!
many, MANY up close

PERSONALITY
I love you Bono🙏🏻🥰♾️
What a fn interview. Loved it, and loved this specific bit.
The most amazing thing about Bono is that listening to his book I realized he is mates with all the worst people in the world
Gavin's music is a cinematic motion picture experience. Brian Eno ambient tunes does made With or without you a certainly beautiful music to feel like drifting in a movie scene.
Pay Gavin his money! 💰
Prayers for Larry 🙏❤🕊️
Oh please. With or without you is catchy because it uses a very formulaic 4 chord progression that’s been used to death. ‘Sonic journey’ pfft.
Strange!
Happy to know Gavin is responsible for resurrecting the Song and made the band more impressive with it more than without it ! Bravo 🎉
