      I tried to troubleshoot my PC when drunk once.
      The pins fell out of a molex connector, i put them back but got the 5V and 12V lines crossed...
      Impressively loud bang that shot the CD drive tray open and literally exploded the CDROM controller chip on the drive. (luckily no damage to the rest of the PC)
      Ever since i don't recommend PC troubleshooting + alcohol ;)

      Also unplug the power cord, leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back in and try again. I've found that worked when the PC has been dead after a power outage.
      It's always worth trying the simple, easy to do, things first.

      Robin Clarijs you mean 7700k?

    • @brechtthebest
      @brechtthebest 7 лет назад

      Robin Clarijs Well, if you have the intel laying around and it has better performance than the r7 1800X (like the i7 7820X does outperform it, and the previous 10 core intel CPU's probably did too), than why not use the best CPU you have at your disposal instead of the CPU that is currently popular in the community? That is like having a gtx 1080 or 1080Ti having around and than use the rx 580 (which performs between a gtx1060 6gb and a gtx1070) just for the sake of pleasing the nvidia- bashers...

    • @fruitcaketech934
      @fruitcaketech934 7 лет назад

      Brecht Schatteman the cpu is not popular, did you not see his video on why he is using it? It's so he does what he preaches, if he's gonna praise the 1700 for it's value and that everyone should buy it, why doesn't he use it, of course Intel offers better but at a much higher price, and while he might be able to afford it, the majority that watch his channel can't.

    • @brechtthebest
      @brechtthebest 7 лет назад

      FruitCakeTech And because most people are watching his channel can't afford a intel X-series CPU, he has to use the r7 1700? I bet even most people can't effort that, so maybe he should stick to the 1600 which is preached as the best bang for your buck available now. The 'do as you preach thing' has more to do with belief than with scenario's like this, I would link such a saying more to fanboyism than a real tech channel. Why? A tech channel does not only have to think about what the viewers would use in their case of content creation. A tech channel would also look at what gives the best performance for the use case that they have available. I am not saying that he has to go buy a 7820X or 7900X, but look at what they have available. I don't know if R7 does outperform the 6th gen 10 core CPU, but if it doesn't and you have that 10 core CPU laying around, why not use that instead of go out and buy a R7 for content creation. Of course he can still preach that the ryzen lineup for the moment is the best bang for your buck available, it doesn't make him have to use it. How many car guys preach about BMW superior handling but still don't use a BMW as their daily driver? I for the moment am pro android but I have an iPhone 6 which does work just fine, but because I am advising people to go buy a new android if they ask me what they should buy, that doesn't make me have to buy an android. Of course it could prove my point and I could try to get RUclips views with titles like "why I switched to android and why iPhone sucks" but that is all not necessary to prove my point. I don't know this channel enough to know what he used before the R7, if that setup needed a replacement or the R7 is a big upgrade than it definitely is a great way to show 'do as you preach'. But if the R7 only performs on par or worse than his previous setup, than it is not showing 'do as you preach' but more showing either enough money to throw out of the window or a certain degree of fanboyism. I know this channel enough to know that he would try to avoid fanboyism though, their are other channels that don't try to avoid a bias. The reason I started following this channel a month ago was because he tries to be unbiased and can admit it when he is wrong.

      Brecht Schatteman your right, but it basically does on par with those cpus with a little overclock, and watch one of his videos, I forgot which one it was, he explains why he's doing it. So even if it's not the smartest thing, I applaud him for making a bold move.

    One quick thing to try: pull out all RAM and expansion cards and re-insert. Sometimes oxidization on the copper pins causes problems and the heating/cooling/heating/cooling of a PC over time cause things to become un-seated. Re-inserting cards and RAM can 'scrub' oxidization off the copper and forces a re-seat.

    Actually, removing any peripherals beyond the essential is a must. On my first build, I had mistaken a Floppy drive plug for a fan one. Somehow it must have shorted something, and wouldn't even turn on. When I unpluged the fan, everything booted up fine. So unplug everything that's on ur mobo, except cpu power, mobo power and gpu.

      Ben C this depends entirely on the cpu. If you’ve got an iGPU (integrated gpu) in the cpu, you can use the DisplayPorts/HDMI-ports/vga whatever you have on your mobo to post and even boot. However if that works then most likely the gpu is at fault. Could also be the pcie lane

    Just to let you know, it can also be a faulty CPU, i've seen one that caused 2 RAM slots not to work, while the other 2 slots were fine. :) Another thing to note is that shorted USB will cause the computer not to turn on at all, happens to me much more ofter than i'd like to.

    I found that my motherboard kept shorting because of the case standoffs created a short which turned my PC on and then off again. Then the PC boots and works for 2-8 hours and repeated the process. I had no choice but to buy a new case which worked perfectly. The old case is working with my newer machine which makes no sense. Anyway, great channel man. Keep us learning and I'll keep this Computer Fire burning inside me.

    I once had a PC (Back in the pentium 4 days) it wouldn't post as long as 1 specific USB port was in use...
    if i used other USB ports (or none) it was fine.. This meant, coz i used a USB mouse and not a PS/2, the troubleshooter in the store spend 3 weeks fixing it, coz he didn't use usb peripherals...
    eventually it the issue was found and i got a new mobo.
    Learning by failing, i guess. Just leaving that "tip" here. test things without having usb and other peripherals plugged in. then you can always plug them in, if it posts and see how/if that works

Remove Fans, graphics cards, all pcie cards, sata connectors, use one USB port at a time, use one ramstick at a time (test your 1 ramstick in a different computer that is working). See if it POSTS.
      Then start re-adding each component one at a time.

    One more tip: If you are using an SSD and it occasionally decides to die and come back to life after unplugging and plugging back in, it's actually the PSU that's bad and a fluctuation on the 5V rail puts the SSD in power surge protection. I know this because I changed an SSD and a motherboard just because of this weird symptom.

    I'll share a PC troubleshooting nightmare story. Long story short, motherboard w/ bad socket fried the CPU. Shortly after installing Windows, random BSODs would happen with different error codes. Swapped the motherboard not knowing that the CPU was already fried from the first one. Had to take it to a professional who diagnosed the bad socket on mobo #1 and that the CPU was now dead. It was a friends build that I helped put together and troubleshoot the issue. He ended up eating the cost of the diagnosis and dead CPU, BECAUSE HE THREW AWAY THE BOX RIGHT AFTER HE GOT THE THING! NEVER DO THIS! KEEP THAT SHIET FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS! That's the moral :)

      Wow man... I was building my first gaming PC. I didn't know my graphics card had a slot for the HDMI because it had rubber plugs in it which I didn't even know it was removable. So I saw your comment and wondered (wait... An HDMI can plug directly into a graphics card..?). Sure enough I took the rubbery things out and plug an HDMI in and there it went, it finally turned on after 2 days working on it. I'm not surprised it was so stupidly simple that I feel like dumbass. Thanks a bunch!!

    A few months ago I built a PC for my friend, and it just wouldn't give any signal to the monitor (monitor only had a HDMI port) and I searched up a bit and I found something simple that fixed the problem:
    Unplug PSU from wall, turn the PSU switch off and then press the power on button on your case/mobo and hold it for 1+ min and voila it got fixed.
    Never understood wth was that and why it happened but I was glad it was that easy to fix

    I personally have just recently ran into a problem where my pc seemed to not be getting any power. However, I knew that my power supply worked because the computer randomly booted after a few hours of messing with it. But the next morning it didn't boot up and I took it to a repair shop and it booted for them. Well, the other day it wouldn't boot again so I looked up motherboard temperature sensitivity on an off hand chance. Well, I figured out that my board is being temperature sensitive, most likely because of a capacitor swelling because it is a cheaper board. But to start the computer from a cold start all I have to do is blow dry it for like 30 seconds to a minute and it boots right up and plays perfectly. It was very frustrating finding this issue because I spent hours with my computer disassembled and it was starting to affect my day to day life. But thank God for forum posts!

    Just wanted to add a comment to the boot drive testing mentioned at 8:04. Not quite the same situation, but a few years ago I was upgrading from X58 to Z97. Most of the components were new, but I opted to keep the same case and SSD since I was happy with them. Did the usual test the core components outside the case to validate that they worked before doing the rebuild. Once complete, the system failed to POST. No debug LED on the board so had to do it the old school way.
    Took a while, but after stripping it back to the core components (Motherboard, CPU, RAM and PSU) just to get the system to POST, I finally found out my SSD was causing the system problems. Tried it again in my X58 configuration and it was fine. A quick google search later and the answer was my some what old OCZ Vertex 2 drive was not compatible with Z97. So it is possible to have a drive cause a system to fail its POST, but not very likely.

    1st thing is to ATX reset the PSU. remove the power cable and hold the power button for 30 seconds. You don't even need to open it up to try this, it only takes a minute and it does fix a relatively high amount of POST problems.

    FWIW, a dead mechanical HD certainly can cause a POST failure, usually of the "It turns off as soon as I turn it on" or "it won't do more than make the fans twitch" types. I've seen this happen many times.
    A short in the motor or electronics can drag any of the supply rails down to ground, hence no "power good" signal. Dead giveaway that this is happening is when the drive's power connector gets warm to the touch even though it's only had power applied for a few seconds. The same could apply to SSDs, although I've never seen it personally.
    Simplest test: Unplug power cables from *all* drives and if you get a POST, try plugging in each drive one at a time (after powering down, of course) and see which one causes the problem.

  • @scottiy6625
    @scottiy6625 7 лет назад

    One other step is move your SATA plug into a different slot to see. I have had it so that the SATA port on the mobo is going bad, and will cause an error with booting and staying on. The board is trying to access a drive that it can't always get the data to and from and does sometimes cause errors. It can be as simple as the cable came just a little loose, or that the plug is going bad on the mobo or drive. Just know it's one I have had that you may overlook

  • @rin6521
    @rin6521 7 лет назад

    So a couple things. First, you can grab a power supply tester off of Amazon for less than 20$ with a digital display that is very easy to use to make sure your power supply is working properly. No need to buy a whole new PSU just to troubleshoot a POST issue(if it were turning off under load that would be a different story). Second, a faulty hard drive controller or other ICs on the drive (BIOS chip for example) can absolutely prevent a PC from POSTing, It's happened to me more than once with shit seagate drives. There have even been recalls and class actions over this for drives with especially high failure rates.
    Most of this was pretty good, generally speaking, you want to start with the quickest and easiest eliminations with troubleshooting and work your way to the more time consuming procedures. One thing I would add is to check any AIO cooler or open loop pumps and ensure they are working still, high temp states on that initial power surge can trip protection features that can also prevent POST. Also, start with unplugging any non-essential USB devices.

    Hey Salazar, got a case for you, see if you can help me out. I'm been building PCs for ages, and from all of the weirdest stuff I've ever came across, this might be the weirdest of'em all, check this (keep in mind that I've already done all the indications you made in this vid):
    - Primary basic Gigabyte brand Intel board with 4x4 GB DDR3-1600 Corsair Vengeance LP XMP compatible sticks. (Board has no bent pins)
    - Secondary Gigabyte brand Intel board with 2x8 GB DDR3-1333 G.Skill value-rated sticks. (Board had bent pins once, I repaired it myself pretty much long ago)
    - Borrowed ASUS Z77 board with 2x8 GB G.Skill TridentX 2400 MHz CL10 CR2 1.65v w/XMP profile
    - 3 LGA1155 processors: i5 3570, i7 2600K and i7 3770.
    - All boards are made for Ivy Bridge (B75 and Z77 SB)
    Diagnosis:
    - System won't POST at all on primary board with the i7 3770 and all 4 sticks, but will with only 3. DIMM 1 slot empty.
    - System runs perfectly fine with all 4 sticks on primary board, both i5 3570 (XMP enabled) and i7 2600K (XMP default disabled, can't enable it, 1333 MHz)
    - Secondary board with i7 3770, this board has 2 DIMMs, both used with it's described RAM sticks, POSTs and works well.
    - i7 3770 on borrowed ASUS board works fine with 2 out of 4 DIMMs (all DIMMs tested), though it won't POST on full 2400 MHz speed, even with 1.65v. System runs just fine with altered XMP profile: 2200 MHz, CL10, CR1, 1.55v
    I really can't come with a conclusion. All DIMM's slots works, all RAM sticks works, all CPU's and board works. Just can't figure out if i7 3770's IMC is failing or just trolling.
    All help is deeply appreciated.

    For those who just want a step by step summary:
    - Get a drink
    - Check cables, assuming those are all fine (if it's your first time building, they probably are because you will have spent a STUPIDLY long amount of time checking them all first) start pulling parts out
    - Greg says check RAM first because it's common, I say check HDD and/or SSD first because it's easy ;)
    - Check every other part, if doing it Greg style start with most common things, if doing my way work out which things are easiest to take out (RAM is probably next for me but it takes awhile to check, then maybe GPU)
    - If nothing is working uh
    - Go contact someone who can physically be there. Try installing an OS. Check if you have a CPU installed. Legitimately all things I've seen people do.

    Also just make sure if you have a Kaby Lake Cpu you aren't putting it into a Sky Lake Mobo without having already updated the bios. If you don't have a Skylake Cpu (unless the mobo has some sort of quick flash) your only option is to just buy a cheap Skylake CPU, use it to update the bios, and then return it.

    You are amazing!! Thank you for explaining this so well! Your first suggestion fixed my issue.
    Been using my PC for years and then one morning I had a solid red CPU light on and no monitor signal. My motherboard didn't have a CMOS-labelled jumper or a button. So, I took the CMOS battery out for 5 minutes to discharge. Placed it back in, did a test run with the tower hooked up only to power, couple lights flashed and disappeared, and then it settled on BOOT_DEVICE_LED. It was ready to be fully hooked up :)

    Adjusting those screws and reconecting everything again fixed my problem. Thank you for the video, it was most informative and is good to know i actually did something right here, im just a newbie with the PC building.

    Most people probably don't have multimeters or old ohmmeters lying around.. but they're the best alternative to test resistance and current rather than buying brand new hardware. If anybody is going to work with PC components regularly, then I would invest in a decently cheap meter personally. Also with proper probes you may even test at the smaller component level.

    2 years later still using this video as a guide. I believe after all the troubleshooting I think the cpu was DOA. The new ram was able to light up, cpu cooler and case fans turned on, and graphics card fans were on. I just was getting a black screen

      This can also be a mobo problem tho, depends on other symptoms
      If debug LED's are off and you get no display, well, after you double-check everything, it's probably the mobo
      If the CPU debug light is on, your BIOS supports the CPU, and your 4/8 pin is plugged in, you can be fairly sure it's the CPU
      Note that CPUs generally not break, bent pins can happen though

    Throwback to when I thought my PC was broken and the ram sticks weren't all the way in.
    Edit: great video subscribed

    The RAM not being pushed far enough happens to me all the time. It's the first thing I check now every time I get no post. Also the CPU swap in and out thing happened a couple of times.

    Simple enough. It’s pretty straightforward. Good stuff. I’ve always had a habit of actually removing the cmos battery lol even if the new motherboards have an option to reset it.

    I had an older PC I did a BIOS update to and for some reason, it would boot very slowly, and the drives would respond slow AF. I went as far as getting a different drive and reinstalling the OS only for the same problems to occur. I checked EVERYTHING, but the recent internal card reader I installed a couple months back. I disconnected it from the USB header, and everything worked as it did before. I even reconnected the card reader and it worked fine. It really does pay off to troubleshoot everything...
