    There is a name for this: Elastomer Life Span, plasticiser migration. Originally its the nice 'non tacky' coating found on all manner of user items. camera bodies...auto cockpit controls etc. Provides non slip grippy surface. However not all elastomers are created equal. Some have service lives that are unlimited (butyl,ethylene propylene, silicone)) some only managing 3 three years (Styrene Butadiene). Guess which is the cheap option used by even the premium auto manufactures? Same applies to plastic headlight assemblies, wondered why your Lexus headlamps cloud up after 3 years and something like a FIAT stays crystal clear even after 10 years in full sun. Tho' generally the rubber coating should be unaffected by UV , explains hy some items stored in the dark glove box or trunk still goes sticky.

    "And today - EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW..."
    Thanks, Tavarish. I needed that laugh. Also, this happens on "low end" cars, too. I just bought a 2000 Honda Accord EX, and it had this sticky crap all over the console. Lots of elbow grease with spray bottle Goo Goone and baby wipes seemed to do the trick.

  • @DarrenPersad
    @DarrenPersad 6 лет назад +1

    Another similar method I’ve seen has used mild wipes (like baby wipes) to soak and clean that degraded top layer, then attacking the surface with a mild or light degreaser (like Simple Green) and a cloth to completely clean the surface, then finishing it all up with a good plastic treatment from someone like Meguiar’s.

  • @JennefferPulapaka
    @JennefferPulapaka 5 лет назад

    The same problem happened with my Jag after a car detail shop used diluted Windex on my dash! ARGH! The break down was exacerbated by the aggressive Florida heat. I used coconut oil and a soft rubber orange stick (cuticle stick). I removed the sticky film with the oil all around the center icon. I left some film, for now, over the icon to protect the paint. I keep the buttons oiled all the time ( bi-monthlyish). That oil coating has slowed the breakdown. I use an old eye drop bottle to store the oil and leave it in my drivers pocket so I can easliy put it on all the areas of film breakdown. This is a serious problem with the Florida heat and the "protective film".

    I had this same thing happen to me. The layer underneath the stupid rubber coating is a cheap powder coat which rubs off very easily. The labels are just areas where that powder coat isn't applied. There's no way around this, aside from maybe carefully removing the gunk and then applying some sort of clear sealant over the buttons.

    If it is just skin cells and oil that makes the buttons sticky, you can clean it as any another plastic part.
    But sometimes skin oil react with the rubber/plastic/elastomer/paint and melt them, so it will not be easy to be fixed without any damage.
    Anyway, you should start from a non agressive cleaner before try the stronger one.
