  • Its the end of 2023! What is going to happen to the Bens Appliances & Junk RUclips channel (and business). I figured I would show & update any of the viewers with what is going on, and what will go on in the near future.
    Happy New Years!

    You should make a basic kids' book on how these appliances work. As far as I know there isn't one. It's a good intro to engineering as they're such a big part of our lives. I'd definitely buy one!
    I'm living without a dishwasher at the moment and either my wife or I are losing 40min of our lives each night washing up.

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  4 месяца назад +20

      Cool idea! I will definitely have to look into it.
      Actually, the more I think about it, the neater that idea is. If you had a book that lets them, say, open the door of an oven and show how dangerous it is, that could be an awesome way to educate kids both on engineering and danger.

    I bought an early '80s house with appliances. Everything I have read tells me to keep using them, since they were made to last, and parts are plentiful. (I did bypass the bad lid-safety switch on the washer, but I don't put my hand into it during the spin cycles).

    You should sell a parts kit for each repair vid you produce. While I usually only look when I need info - it's amazing how often I need this kind of info. Gone are the days of fridges working for 50 years.

      A major goal of mine is tear down/film a Maytag DC like that, then a pre-Design 2000 Whirlpool washer. I've dealt with multiple, if not many DCs but never an old school Wig Wag unit.
      One of my techs has two maytag DCs. One for parts, the other for daily use. He's owned them both for 20 years and has yet to touch the backup unit for parts.

      It is. I mentioned on a social media post that I started my business with less than $1000. He then spent literally 2 hours trying to go over every way possible that I was lying. He then accused me of lying about my store, claiming I really worked for a Bens Appliances out of Canada and only had a job because of my dad or something... But I've never been to Canada, and my dad died before I even really did appliance repair.
      But what I'm getting at is what you're saying exactly - so many people CAN but they're far more willing to find a reason NOT to.

    Quick question about our Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. It's 2 years old now. When we bought it, we also bought a waterdrop RO system. We added a line from the system to the refrigerator. I've been ignoring the warnings to change the filter, because the water going through there is already filtered. Does whirlpool or anybody sell a dummy filter for the fridge? Is there a bypass filter? Thanks.

      Honestly, the issue is that the only way you can cheat the laws of thermodynamics is either a really slow 120v unit, or a dryer w/ a heat pump. That's what the GE Profile 2-in-1 is... Washer then dryer w/ a heat pump. It works phenomenally well to get your clothes dry quickly, but definitely complex.

    @BensAppliance if you ever monetize this channel I will subscribe (especially if you make it a great deal). (Is that what monetize means?) QUESTION: What EXACTLY is it about through-the-door icemakers that cause trouble? I have a (dreaded) Samsung that is from 2011. I love the ice and water through the door and have not had trouble with it, per se. BUT! The silly thing likes to deposit ice under my crisper drawer which means I have to occasionally attack it with a hammer or grilling spatula to be able to slide the drawer open. IS THIS SOMEHOW related to the ice maker? I'm begging you please to help me understand why I shall not ever again order a through-the-door ice maker!

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  2 месяца назад

      The issue is through the door icemakers on refrigerator cabinets.
      By nature, ice makers have to be cold. Below 20*F. By having the icemaker in the refrigerator, you are placing a very cold device in a much warmer one. Additionally, the refrigerator cabinet usually has high moisture content to keep foods fresh. The icemaker needs to be zero-moisture, otherwise it generates ice crystals/ect that damage the components of the icemaker.
      By having in-door ice, you create all kinds of locations for gaps to be formed and damaged over time to let the warm air leak in, and damage the icemaker. No ice maker on the market really works super well in the door. All the major brands have flaws.
      Inversely, by having the icemaker in the freezer, you do away with this, because the freezer is naturally cold. It also does away with multiple components that are needed to push ice into your cup in the door vs. scooping from a bin.

    Why is it that people use youtube to gain a following and then when they get it that following, go to a membership and ace out most of their followers?

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  4 месяца назад +11

      I get about 10 phone calls per day and 20-30 E-mails from people that need help that go to my website and find any form of contact information. In addition, RUclips says I had 22,000 comments in 2023. Many of them are questions about needing help with their appliances. These numbers are in addition to calls/messages/comments from people that are local that I actually work for at my store, for reference.
      How do you want me to answer them, exactly?
      Because if you can help me with a way to do that, free of memberships, I am 100% willing to listen.
      On the memberships, the reason I am going to do that is that the money would be used to hire appliance technicians that can help answer peoples questions, so they don't get drowned out with the other ~22,000 questions. Additionally, I cannot steal or illegally distribute schematics, diagrams, and tech sheets to people that need help with their appliances. I currently, personally, pay $600/yr to access that and single tech diagrams are $20 per person, per appliance. I can likely cut a deal to distribute them to way less of I say "Hey, I am going to have memberships and can bring in hundreds, maybe thousands of requests for tech sheets if you cut me a deal".
      I try to answer as many questions as I can. Some are very easy to deal with that take 30-60 seconds to give an answer to solve.
      But what about the woman that called me when I was at home a few weeks ago, that needed refrigerator adivce because she has anxiety and needed re-assured she was making a good decision? Did you want me to tell her to shove off, that I wasn't going to talk to her? That definitely sounds like something many RUclipsrs would do. Not listen to anyone full-stop.
      That phone call was 20 minutes long. That's time I sat down and talked to her instead of playing with my kids.
      I've probably answered 2-3 calls like that today, every day, for months now. Personally.
      When you can tell me how to deal with that, I'll gladly do that.
      But until then, those are some of my reasons why I would ", go to a membership and ace out most of their followers?"
      Also, I am pinning your comment for my response, because I've tried to avoid memberships for awhile now, but every week, this channel gets a little larger, and my time gets a little smaller to help people because I run a business. But its worth a comprehensive answer, so here it is.

      @bensappliancesandjunk Categorize the questions. There has to be multiples of the same issue, with the same manufacturer or common to all. For instance, why isn'tmy ice maker not making ice cubes? . I don't think anyone should take advantage of you with 20 minute phone calls. Perhaps you need to charge a flat fee for a consult of $20-$25. Still much, much less expensive than calling a repair person. And, that could be a dedicated video if many are calling in with the same or similar issue. Some fixes are just too complicated for a youtube video session. On the other hand, for those wanting to learn all the ins and outs of appliance repair, then, yes, perhaps a course study with a membership is appropriate. I'm not telling you how to run your business. I am just stating what happens with a lot of youtubers. Every success for you in 2024.

    • @SandySez

      Go for it Ben! I've never understood how these contractors (& mechanics) with YT channels can field SO many damn questions and MOST of the questions have nothing to do with the video context they leave the questions on ... and many of them don't/can't respond to them all, they just have to ignore a lot of comment/questions.
      Maybe if you (takes some time, I know) set up a good, general "Q&A" tab on your website &/or various common video clips that have been covered already. Something you can just direct a lot of those people to or pop them a link and get on with your work & life.
      I had to turn my whole house water off last week for 5 days, I was elated when my Well/Pump guy showed up on the Saturday of Christmas weekend, his next call was a family w/ all H2o off and a house full of holiday company ... then some lady called (while he's working MY job) because she had some 'slow leak'. I'd NEVER call a repairman (who has a family of his own) on a Saturday over that but ESPECIALLY not on Christmas weekend.. But that's how (a LOT of) people are.
      Keep your boundaries healthy Ben!! Especially while you're keeping your (self-employed) head above water and raising a family!

    People forget (or don't realize) that all repairmen started out knowing nothing. All had to learn, or be taught, and anyone can learn. As a bonus, seeing as how the trades aren't seen as a sexy, high-paying, glamourous job, it's kinda ignored and there's TONS of job openings for people willing to step up and learn. You won't go hungry if you can repair or build stuff. o7
