I mean, I can run AudioAssault Amp Locker on a Celeron N4020 1.1 GHz dual core if I run Linux as the OS. MX Linux can keep up with it just fine. Also, the GUI-less Linux LV2 port by AIDA/MOD works in a plugin host on the same hardware.
@@jasonzdora Windows 10 and 11 have something called "amelioration playbooks" put out by a community to strip down and simplify Windows, as well as rip out all the telemetry, which aside from being good for your privacy, has an added bonus of improving performance of the system. Ameliorated(dot)info has everything you need (I keep getting flagged for spam for some reason every time I provide any links in YT comments, IDK), and for pro audio, I would highly recommend something like that.

I was looking at this for NAM!! Im so glad i found this video!! I only use a clean tone an overdrive reverb snd delay so im hope it can do some basic effects snd have my live rig. Even reaper delay would be fine for me. Any chance youve tried other effects with it?
Yes, I have! You are right that you would want to use stock plugins. But! If youre only using one NAM in mono, you can probably get away with more FX than you think! The big thing is learning how to manipulate the DAW session with a MIDI controller (a whole other huge rabbit hole).

@@kyronnewbury Nah, I use Ableton. After a lot of testing, that DAW was surprisingly the lightest CPU-wise. Lighter than Cantable or Kushview. I demo'd Gig Performer and same thing... Ableton was lighter. Cool @ having MIDI. I suggest checking out MIDIkey2key. It lets you send MIDI notes to Windows and run scripts outside of Reaper. So you can do things like "wake up" the screen, start or stop programs, etc etc. Takes a bit of setup but its worth it. Also look into creating startup.bat files for your DAW. If you put them in a specific folder (windows startup folder) you basically just have to hit the power button on the micro PC and in a minute or so, everything is up and running without manual intervention. Takes a bit of tweaking but once you get it, its really nice.

@@kyronnewbury If youre talking about a live drummer on a MIDI kit, Id suggest using something lighter than SD3. Or at least pre-mixing the sounds so youre just triggering plain .wav files. If youre talking about a sequenced backing track, just record it onto a .wav file. Dont waste any resources. Thats more room for better guitar FX.

I dusted off my old behringer fcb1010 controller and have it going into my interface to control AmpHub and some other software... being able to take that mobile into something like a SD powerstage --> Cab is just so slick
@@ampspedalspickups I just ordered a Line 6 FBV Express MkII because its smaller than my FCB and its USB powered so it can also (hopefully) be run by the battery on the micro PC. Also been proven by other users to control stuff like the NDSP plugins which is great. Would be amazing to have all of that running with ONLY audio cables. Im getting better with Reaper but Im going to install Ableton and check that as well because I know the MIDI and the signal routing (~20 years experience). I wonder if it will bog down the CPU more than Reaper. Probably will but hoping it doesnt.

Yeah, the whole idea being that its a USB powered foot pedal for less wires and stuff. Our boy Tudor mentioned the Harley Benton MP-100 as well which is also small and only foot switches.
Would love a Win11 decrapify video. I've done my own stuff here but there's always something I miss, esp with Win10/11. They're making it harder to turn stuff off, not like the old days for sure. It has the same latency as any other computer using Ableton and an Audient iD14 at 48khz with a 64 or 128 sample buffer. The imedance is also dependent on the audio interface. There is no difference.

That sounds like a lot for something this small to run. I would suggest making all of those plugins and MIDI files into simple audio tracks. Then MAYBE it would work. I would just do that anyways. No reason to use anything besides regular audio for backing tracks. Stem them out if you have to but really a stereo .wav file for all non-live audio would suffice.
Im using Ableton and there are a couple ways you can send MIDI to change sounds. The easiest and best way I found was to enable one instance of the NAM plugin and disable another instance of the NAM plugin. I can set up a round-robin of NAMs that will cycle OR I can set it up where I disable all NAMs except for one. I dont know Reaper well enough to give advice on how to do that kinda thing, unfortunately.
@@FilippoDeVecchi I recommend a headless/GUI-less Debian Bookworm installation and then install PiPedal. I use that on a RPI4 and it works great. I use 64 samples of latency and a STANDARD NAM model uses ~40% CPU.
The scene already looking great! I'm sure you can get a bit of extra battery life (and maybe achieve lower latency, like stereo 64 samples without glitching) by cleaning and optimizing the OS. To begin with, there are tools to completely disable Windows Update and Windows Defender. Then you can get rid of useless services that run in the background and so on...
Yep! I actually spent the last few days doing exactly that. Battery life with the screen on and running audio through the stereo signal chain I showed in this video lasted about 80 minutes. I also cleaned up a LOT of the Windows garbage. I wont be putting this computer on the internet anytime soon! Autoruns in safe mode lets you completely remove Windows security and other dumb services that dont matter to me. I got 64 samples in stereo but its JUST on the verge. If I were to remove the IR and play a "complete rig" set of NAMs, I could do 2 no problem (either for switching between 2 sounds or running just 1 sound in stereo). I also ran true round trip latency tests just now and its looking good: 311 samples @ 64 with FX chain OFF 334 samples @ 64 with FX chain ON (~7ms) 490 samples @ 128 with FX chain OFF 502 samples @ 128 with FX chain ON (~10.5ms) I can play through the 128 with no complaints, honestly.

Yes! I checked all my IR loaders for CPU. NadIR and Melda MConvolutionEZ are the "cheapest" while still requiring about 8-9% of resources. Cablab4 was the worst at about 20%. Ableton actually has a convolution reverb plugin that was just slightly the best (native DAW effects usually are). Ive still got to go through some checks with LatencyMon to see if Im missing anything. The fact is that Im happy to be able to play at 128 with 2 rigs but if I can get that safely to 64 then I know I can do other things like more FX, backing tracks, etc.
Thats my voice mic hearing me playing the guitar in the room. NAM does have a standalone application already, I just like using Bertom Denoiser a whole lot more than using a standard gate, so I prefer to run it in a DAW.
Having a standalone already exists, but since the program is released under MIT Open Source Licence, technically someone could take a mini PC like this and an Interface, design a custom touch UI like a guitar pedal, configure the a small touch screen to show a full screen interface, some MIDI actuator stomp buttons, and a basic audio interface, throw it into an enclosure, and sell it as a guitar pedal. Steve Atkinson made NAM as a passion project, and encourages other to re-appropriate his programming for other projects. I should know - I actually know him IRL.

Maybe you can try to install (Bootable USB stuff, easy cake) a windows 10 or 11 (LITE EDITION that has on the internet) or even Win7 LITE editon and try.
I looked into Win7 Lite and the thing is, it just removes bloatware. That stuff has already been manually removed. The big issues with Windows running stuff in the background is Defender and other services. I already cleaned all of that out by running a program called Autoruns while the computer was in safe mode. I am now able to run 2 NAMs at 64 samples with no crackles but its JUST BARELY enough CPU for me to accomplish that. Any more FX and I start to get light crackling. Its all good. Im perfectly happy with 128 samples and having some headroom for other stuff like backing tracks or even vocals.
I'll try to find this lil PC or something like where I'm living, I really like your idea. My girlfriend was using the "normal" Windows 10 and I installed a "gamer" version with just 1.8GB and runs like fire, without the defender of course, same WIN 10 PRO so I put her own serial number and that's it.@@jasonzdora
Just make sure you keep it patched and protected when you go online, you're going to expose the device if you run without AV and actively use the internet. If you stay offline you can disable tons of services.
Yep, I hear you. I completely destroyed Defender and I also disabled the plugins for any internet services in order to prevent me from ever accidentally getting online. That forces me to transfer files to/from it with a thumb drive.

Try it with a Linux distro and a NAM lv2 compiled with Clang. I think that you might be pleasantly surprised.
