Hi CiCi, first I'd like to say thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us out here. You are fun and very interesting to listen to. I really enjoy your music. I am starting on my learning music journey much later in life than normal (I'm an old fart) and even though your young, yet very talented, my question is what would you say helped you achieve your skills in a way that meant your success at learning this instrument? Again, it's a real treat to experience your talent! Merry Christmas btw!🎄

Cheers, Cici 😁 PS: wow...so with you on the food related health anxiety, I have diverticulosis, so I have to be super careful about what I eat and if I'm away somewhere and eat the wrong thing it could be disastrous
Funny you say that! Metal is actually my favourite genre to play, because it’s where I have my roots (started playing because of Paul Gray from slipknot). One of my first bands was actually prog metal band, I was with them from age 14 to 18. You can still find us all over RUclips (and a couple of TV things 😂), called Aramantus. I’m also in the process of setting up my own prog metal band called Von Strangelove, something I’ve wanted to do for about 10 years now, but kept having other commitments. Flatwounds? You could try Thomastik Infeld Jazz flats - super pliable and compliant. If you hate the flatwounds which feel like they could hold up a suspension bridge, give these a try because these are pretty much the opposite. Merry Christmas!

Great Q&A. Interesting that Paul Gray was your influence to start playing, mine was the other Paul Gray (of the Damned and Eddie and the Hot Rods) totally different styles, but also a great bass player and a thoroughly lovely chap. One question; Mrs B wants to know what's on your dressing gown? 😁
@@CiciVonStrangelove ahh there we go, Mrs B thought there was something wizardy and steamy on it, so that explains all. Thank you. Enjoy your Christmas break, looking forward to 2024, I want to see you rocking nature with a little Bass magic 🎸👍🤘
Hi Cici, Merry Christmas. Have you ever seen footage of Michael Manring playing his song 'the enormous room' with his zon bass? I think it could be of interest to you :)
Oh wow, a fellow scoliosis person! I was diagnosed when I was 17 and already had 30+ curve, had to wear a corset for 1.5 years. It kept the curvature from getting worse while I was still growing, but it didn't really fix it (my sister was diagnosed at the same time, but she's 7 years younger, so she wore that shit for years, and now her spine is pretty much straight). Playing with a strap can feel awkward if I don't pay active attention to my posture, so I might try that strap you recommended.
Ahh sorry to hear that! I was diagnosed at 14 and had a 42 degree curve at the time, thankfully I haven’t really grown much since then and it hasn’t gotten any worse now I’ve stopped growing haha! They recommended I just leave it if it’s not bothering me aesthetically, since it doesn’t cause me too much pain most of the time (certain things to cause it to hurt though). Interesting to hear it pretty much straightened your sister’s back! Out of interest, are your ribs also twisted almost diagonally? Mine are and it makes chairs pretty uncomfortable so wondered if you had the same problem!
@@CiciVonStrangelove I don't think my ribs are "twisted", but they are off diagonally. My chest and back are asymmetrical, but they kinda just follow the curve of my spine, I'd say an x-ray of my rib cage would look okay if you just tilted your head, haha. So thank fully it's not something that's anatomically in the way, it's just that it can hurt if I maintain the wrong posture for long, and in certain situations (like while carrying stuff) I tend to lean into the wrong postures if I don't pay attention.
I missed sending in questions but do you approach bass differently for a trio than other bands? If so, what do you change/do to fill in under the guitarist when they go to solo, or do you keep it the same? I’ve begun playing bass with a trio (first time) and the guitarist tells me he’d like more under the guitar when he solos. Different pedals, (octaver, distortion, chorus, delay) playing more notes/fills etc?
I've seen the video Why Do You Play Bass The Way You Do? Not too long ago, either. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be as specific as I wanted and needed to be about my question. The text kept being really stupid, after I typed so much in for the question lol A more specific question, now that you've said that you give the song what it needs: How do I learn to understand what a song needs, as a bassist?
Also, it was really fascinating hearing all of the other questions with you answers. I suppose Dave Simpson is appreciating time away from you while you continue these other projects...while still interacting with them. Sounds like a very classy shit talker hahaha
Hey Cici, have you tried wearing the strap around your waist ala Steve Albini? I expect with scoliosis this may be beneficial in terms of health/longevity.
@@CiciVonStrangelove I'll be curious how you find it! as a drummer I have no practical opinion. Been digging your vids, your obvious love for music inspires.
On your point about not worrying about not wanting to play all the time- what's your opinion about how, though I want to learn and am learning to play guitar, I have no real desire to play any songs?
In my opinion, if you want to learn to play guitar and you’re enjoying it, then keep learning what you want to and what you enjoy. If playing songs isn’t a part of that then so be it. You’re clearly getting something else from it and that’s the important thing
Haha I don’t blame you! Heating the food actually isn’t part of the anxiety thing for me, it actually does stop the allergic reaction from raw fruit :)
Speaking on your anxiety, have you ever tried CBD? (I don't really know if it's legal in the UK), but it's done wonders for my fiance and I, who both have pretty heavy anxiety issues. Her doctor actually suggested it to her. Also, Merry Christmas!
Frankly to just to dumb down where her ancestry is from, she has one british parent who probably has the german and Scandinavian heritage, and that could be her mom and then has one armenian parent probably her dad I mean a quick Google search her last name is hyphenated being powell-melkonian so there
Haha I wish it was that simple, but my dad did an ancestry test and got the Scandinavian and German, but he’s the one who looks like me with the dark skin and more eastern features 😂 Also the Melkonian is only in my name on Facebook because it made my profile easier to find (and was a nod to that piece of heritage) My mum has never done a DNA test but she is more north European looking. On various websites I’ve had results ranging from Italian Armenian Spanish North African Russian German British Irish Scandinavian Finnish Icelandic But no one website seems to match up 😂
@@CiciVonStrangeloveyou are you, perfect as you are. It really doesn’t matter what your ancestors were, it matters what you are. Wish the world would learn to stop judging based on looks, heritage, religion etc. stop judging and just love one another. Side not I’ve done 2 dna tests, I’m apparently more British than Brits are. 80% from United Kingdom. Never been but would love to visit.
If you think 80s gothy chorus bass tones aren't used anymore, you need to listen to some 21st century goth, some of us are still using that kind of tone.

The head and pedals were stolen, f..k. take care and be happy ps: Circus 2000 on youtube❤️✌️
Happy Holidays Cici!
Thanks for answering my question about the "long hair problem," I guess I'll just have to get used to it. 😑😑😑
Merry Xmas!
Merry Christmas! 🎄
Merry Christmas! 😊
Flatwounds? You could try Thomastik Infeld Jazz flats - super pliable and compliant. If you hate the flatwounds which feel like they could hold up a suspension bridge, give these a try because these are pretty much the opposite. Merry Christmas!
Haha brilliant description! Thanks so much for the suggestion, I’ll definitely give them a go, sounds perfect :) merry Christmas!
Happy new year!
Happy new year :)
Stopped the video basically right away. What’s the handpan music in the background? I need it right now ☺️☺️☺️ I played handpan once and it’s endlessly meditative. I could play and listen to it for hours. 🙏
It’s this :) a lovely lady called That Handpan Lady is also going to be doing some backing tracks for me :) - ruclips.net/video/APLbjdRu4ag/видео.htmlsi=Lr9EDI0DUXgReApU
Awesome video Cici. Really insightful as ever. All the best with the band project … and everything else in the New Year 🎉
Thank you so much Graham! Glad you liked it :) Same for you! All the best for 2024
@@CiciVonStrangelove … and considering switching to Lightroom … think I’ve outgrown Apple ‘Photo’ 😁
Love your solo music Keep it up and thank you one question what back round music was playing in this vid thanks
Seriously ❤❤😅
I like your hair, it looks like an Ibanez GRG220PA-RLB
Haha awesome!! Thank you very much :)
Merry Christmas Cici!
I don't know if you have a day job or not, but what other type of employment you would have pursue? Merry Christmas! Great Q&A.
Ahh brilliant! That’s awesome :) It’s the Hogwarts express and platform 9 3 quarters from Harry Potter!
@@CiciVonStrangelove ahh there we go, Mrs B thought there was something wizardy and steamy on it, so that explains all. Thank you. Enjoy your Christmas break, looking forward to 2024, I want to see you rocking nature with a little Bass magic 🎸👍🤘
I started on a white sr300 😅
Hi Cici, Merry Christmas. Have you ever seen footage of Michael Manring playing his song 'the enormous room' with his zon bass? I think it could be of interest to you :)
Hey! Merry Christmas :) I haven’t, but will check it out! Thanks so much
oh, Merry Christmas,,,,just recieved a new Bass ..

I love u 😘😘😍🖤😍🖤😍🥰
I've seen the video Why Do You Play Bass The Way You Do?
Not too long ago, either.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be as specific as I wanted and needed to be about my question. The text kept being really stupid, after I typed so much in for the question lol
A more specific question, now that you've said that you give the song what it needs: How do I learn to understand what a song needs, as a bassist?
Also, it was really fascinating hearing all of the other questions with you answers. I suppose Dave Simpson is appreciating time away from you while you continue these other projects...while still interacting with them. Sounds like a very classy shit talker hahaha
Maybe if using flats, down tune a couple of semitones to reduce the tension. D standard's kinda cool anyway.
Hey Cici, have you tried wearing the strap around your waist ala Steve Albini? I expect with scoliosis this may be beneficial in terms of health/longevity.
@@cjsinclair864 good shout! thank you :)
@@CiciVonStrangelove I'll be curious how you find it! as a drummer I have no practical opinion.
Been digging your vids, your obvious love for music inspires.
@@cjsinclair864 Ahh thank you so much, it really means a lot to hear that! Glad you’re enjoying them :)
Hello Ms CiCi, do you prefer using 10" , 12" , 15" or a combination of speakers in your stage rig?
On your point about not worrying about not wanting to play all the time- what's your opinion about how, though I want to learn and am learning to play guitar, I have no real desire to play any songs?
In my opinion, if you want to learn to play guitar and you’re enjoying it, then keep learning what you want to and what you enjoy. If playing songs isn’t a part of that then so be it. You’re clearly getting something else from it and that’s the important thing
What is the music playing in the background?
😎👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
is that backing music just some copyright free stuff or is it from an old adventure pc game? it gives me nostalgia hints but can't pinpoint...
It’s copyright free, but I feel the same way which is why I chose it 🤣
@@CiciVonStrangelove I think it sounds similar to the soundtrack of "Quern: Undying Thoughts". Great game btw check it out
Oh my god I agree with the heating thing, not anxieties really I just like putting things in the microwave
Haha I don’t blame you! Heating the food actually isn’t part of the anxiety thing for me, it actually does stop the allergic reaction from raw fruit :)
Where are you from in the UK? Trying to place your accent and failing miserably!
I’m from near Worcester :)
@@CiciVonStrangelove Cheers Cici - yep.. I had you pegged as further North 🤣 Happy Christmas 🤟🏻
@@CiciVonStrangeloveYou are spicy like the Worcester Sauce. I bet you would go well with egg and chips!
Just a question: Have you ever played a fretless bass?
Yep :) - ruclips.net/video/o80NMvvy7uI/видео.htmlsi=Qa9Kq8XXRI_AUXEZ
@CiciBass thank you for answering. Also, I left a comment for the ancestry thing am I somewhere in the ballpark
@@ov6021 loved reading your estimate! :)
@@CiciVonStrangelove thanks
Speaking on your anxiety, have you ever tried CBD? (I don't really know if it's legal in the UK), but it's done wonders for my fiance and I, who both have pretty heavy anxiety issues. Her doctor actually suggested it to her.
Also, Merry Christmas!
Frankly to just to dumb down where her ancestry is from, she has one british parent who probably has the german and Scandinavian heritage, and that could be her mom and then has one armenian parent probably her dad I mean a quick Google search her last name is hyphenated being powell-melkonian so there
Haha I wish it was that simple, but my dad did an ancestry test and got the Scandinavian and German, but he’s the one who looks like me with the dark skin and more eastern features 😂 Also the Melkonian is only in my name on Facebook because it made my profile easier to find (and was a nod to that piece of heritage)
My mum has never done a DNA test but she is more north European looking.
On various websites I’ve had results ranging from
Italian
Armenian
Spanish
North African
Russian
German
British
Irish
Scandinavian
Finnish
Icelandic
But no one website seems to match up 😂
@@CiciVonStrangelove well thanks for answering that
@@ov6021 no worries at all! It’s a fascinating subject, maybe one day I’ll have a definitive answer :)

@@CiciVonStrangeloveyou are you, perfect as you are. It really doesn’t matter what your ancestors were, it matters what you are. Bass sounds better with fingers rather than a plectrum, IMHO.
If you think 80s gothy chorus bass tones aren't used anymore, you need to listen to some 21st century goth, some of us are still using that kind of tone.
Are you and Dave still together? I haven't seen you in his channel and his songs all seem alot sadder now.did you two breakup?
No not at all, we’re still together, he’s just home for Christmas. In fact recently he’s in a much better place than ever, we’ve been helping him get on track. Don’t worry :)
