  • After fighting off strep throat and a really bad cold, I am finally back to making videos! Truthfully I recorded the audio for this one about 3 weeks ago, but it just took me so long to not be in a haze and actually edit it somewhat competently. We go over major differences between the Yu-Gi-Oh anime and manga, mainly stemming around the Dungeon Dice Monsters arc. I hope you all learn something new, and enjoy!

      Exactly, it didn't turn into a duel where maybe yugi and Keith would tie or yugi was about to win but didn't, in the manga he started showing halfway through the series how he was growing a game player, and won without the help from atem. The anime actually showed yugis progression near the end of the series, which doesn't seem fair to me

    God I love the original manga. Which I was so upset when Yugi's character development was never shown by the anime having Atem duel Duke.
    I get that the Bandit Keith duel is supposed to make up for that, but the Dungeon Dice match had more meaning in the manga.
    But if I had one disappointment with the manga version, it's that Grandpa Muto and Mr. Clown never had a face to face. Especially since their past is what prompts this match in the first place.

    Honestly, some of my favorite parts of the manga were the non dual arcs, the earliest story arcs, the Bakura and Atem fighting with DnD characters with everyone’s souls, and Dungeon Dice Monsters.
    The duals are definitely the more iconic and have definitely proven its staying power, but these bits showed a lot of creativity and helped break up the story beats better.

    • @patrickzalatoris3206
      @patrickzalatoris3206 Год назад

      The manga of course had the mini story arcs focus on character development for the main characters, with teas infatuation for the Pharoah and having a part time job so she can study to be a dancer, the manga also goes deeper for Joey's life as he was a delinquent who hung out with a bad crowd because of his alcoholic loser father, Tristan is kinda the least developed of the gang aside from telling us how he and Joey became best friends, even Duke had more development than Tristan for having a rivalry with yugi due to their parents 20 long feud

    @Yugioh Everything, another manga/anime comparison you could do is the ignoring/reversal of the running gag where Jonuchi is scared of occult stuff but Bakura loves it. I loved this joke in the manga was disappointed to see it practically ignored in the anime.

    A nice video. It made me think of two reasons the story with Duke’s dad might had been taken out. The first it that it might had been seen as too repetitive to have three stories of horrible dad’s in Yu Gi Oh as the one with Gozaburo was also going to come up soon. That one and the one about Marik’s dad were way more important to the overall story then the one with Duke’s dad so they decided to just use those two. The second thing I thought of was that the events they kept from the story were a good way to jumpstart the second season of Yu Gi Oh, immediately setting up the danger Yugi was in, having a new enemy who can control peoples minds to deal with, Yugi having almost died/nearly lost the puzzle and all on top of all of that Bakura is inside the puzzle now waiting to put his at the time still unclear plan into place. Mixing these events into the same story added to the tension of the early part of the season, so that’s the way they were lined up.

    Thank you for confirming what I thought of the Bandit Keith duel.
    I think the manga also had wee yugi face duke for another reason you did not mention.
    Manga or not Atem does most of the important duels... Manga not having the needed Raphiel matches means that this arc serves to give the viewer a clue that Atem is a horrible back seat driver and lil yugi is a nice guy that realizes that Atem is a prisoner and enjoys shadow games so let him do those normally.
    or of course lil yugi has no confidence... not sure which, but either way this battle was to prove Atem is not the only master gamer in the relationship.

      I actually really enjoy it as a filler arc. I have a thing for filler arcs since they don't have to consider the larger plot all that much. That means there is much more focus placed on the moment. I also really like that it was sort of the first challenge to Yugi's title. That he now was the king of games and that meant he had to defend his title.
      Rebecca had little to do with it and a few of the other filler ones were no challenge to Yugi in any way. Especially with Duke's motivation in that he refused to believe Yugi was up Pegasus' level.
      I really love that speech that Joey gives when Yugi starts to doubt himself. With how much anime always stress humility I really loved how this went against that. Yugi is the king of games and the best duelist in the world. He won duelist kingdom because he was the best duelist on the island. That might sound obvious but it's easy to forget, you shouldn't flaunt your past achievements but you shouldn't downplay them either.
      I think Yu-Gi-Oh had some of the best filler arcs in anime. The noah arc, while awkwardly placed has some really great duels especially with the strange character pair ups and elaborates a lot on Kaiba. The Atlantis arc is great in it's own right and shows a more vulnerable side to Atem. I would say the KC grand championship arc is the weakest but I still like it as harmless fun and has some really great moments. I love when Atem switches back to Yugi to get out of an awkward moment. It really shows how comfortable they have grown around each other. I do wish the part of Yugi as a champion was focused on a little more though.

    i really think the reason why the dad is not added in is just due to the fact that he wears a clown suit. I believe in general maybe due to the movies or something that gave clowns a bad name already, adding this in for kids to see back in the days? Would definitely traumatize alot of kids to think clowns = evil scary beings. Though the movies now already traumatize people enough anyways x'DD

    I think they could've mashed them together and did a combo of both. Obviously play it down a little, but still show Mr. Clown and the abusive father-son relationship. They did it with Seto but that was a little over the top. This seemed more down to earth, a parent using their child to advance their own agenda. A relateable story to some (not me personally but I've read stories). It would've also made Duke's character A LOT more sympathetic. In the dub they made him this cocky, arrogant punk. Knowing that his father was abusing him behind closed doors would've changed his character dramatically. Though I still like the Joey vs Duke duel and how at the end, Atem catches the dice and steps in. Though the anime also robbed little Yugi of a pretty big win. Damn.

    • @MrMarinus18

      Really? I think the anime has more reason. In the manga he's basically being pushed to do it by his dad, sure he does believe it's warranted but it's not for his own ideals. In the anime it's actually deeper since he's taking out his anger on Yugi; both about his disillusionment of Pegasus and the frustration of his game not taking off. He both wants to win and also somewhat wants Yugi to win. He wants to hold Yugi to the same standards as he holds Pegasus.
      I really like it because it was Yugi really having to defend his title. Yugi was not the king of games and this felt like a real challenge to that.

    When I first read the manga I had a wtf just happened moment lol manga duke was a much more sympathetic character. His whole reasoning falls apart in the anime when the arc ends with him getting the DDM contract email LITERALLY AS SOON AS THE GAME ENDS!

    So I believe that dungeon dice monsters was basically the “final” attempt by the author to bring Yugioh back to its gaming roots instead of just duel monsters. And when it didn’t do as well, they just went with the battle city plan.
    As for the changes in the anime, i can see them thinking some of it was too intense, but I’d think most of it was because since the story was now almost entirely duel monsters, the important things should happen in duels. So Yugi defeating a major opponent without Atem, Bakura sealing his soul into the puzzle, Joey saving them, etc. they only kept DDD in for Duke’s introduction, and added in many duel monster characters to the game.

      I don't know since Konami actually did try to market and push the DDD game. However it flopped and they decided to just give up on it.

  • @amianab.h4066

    I personally really wished they kept that but let’s be real. Even in subs they didn’t exactly follow the manga and never got to S0. I believe they always aimed to an audience more or less in the same age as as manga readers but just keep it clean enough to get on air AND rack a bit more audience to get into it. So yeah I think it’s that simple.
    Also just as a side: for the heck of it I wished I was able to see 4kids version of this. How you gone censor that 4kids , your move.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 4 года назад +1

      I think it's also because they needed to inject filler. Since otherwise they would get too far ahead.
      I more so think that's why they changed it like they did. That they split up the stories of Dungeon Dice Monsters and the fire to get more episodes.

  • @iBenjamin1000
    @iBenjamin1000 2 года назад +1

    I love dungeon dice monsters and I wish I could see more of the game played in the anime. But you know, it was a good filler duel.
    But yeah, the manga probably makes for the better story. Plus with knowing that all those arcs like virtual world, orichalcos, and KC championship are anime filler (as much as I like them), the manga is def written with a much better pace.

    • @seqka711
      @seqka711 5 лет назад

      Actually Capsule Monsters was in the manga. It was a board game that Mokuba excelled at. He challenged Yugi to a CapMon battle twice. The video game by extension is actually based off of this board game rather than the CapMon tv series.

    I liked both for different reasons but I wish they went with the manga version because it’s weird to sell a game with licensed duel monsters without Pegasus’ permission. It’s like a make a Pokémon board game and sell it without Nintendo’s permission, that wouldn’t fly. Unless Duke met up with Pegasus BEFORE selling his game publicly and got permission

    Also in the manga, while cool yugi is dueling bandit keith by himself, the way it comes up feels very random, and having him come back just to foreshadow marik and the rare hunters was kinda stupid and wasted to have a major character from a previous arc comeback for just that!
