"Have you experienced the endowment effect?" is my new favorite pickup line.

Maybe I'm just a bit backwards, but unless the game has a losing condition wherein you lose if you run out of money (like Monopoly), I don't like sitting on excess resources. I have to manage resources I'm sitting on, and an unused resource is a wasted resource, so I tend to get rid of them rather quickly if I can.

Chaz, guilty as charged. The minute I was able to upgrade the cardboard tokens in Viticulture Essentials edition for a decent price, I jumped on it. Once the price dropped significantly on those metal lira coins, it was like an offer I couldn't refuse too easily. Was it something I "had" to upgrade? No, the cardboard coins in the game sufficed quite nicely, but human beings inherently just want nice things in general. Do I replace money in many games that I own? No. But in this case, since I think very highly of Viticulture and am planning on keeping it, I thought it'd be nice to enjoy the clinking of metal coins as we play. I think the endowment effect can be tamped down with some self-control steps such as: budgeting, common sense, etc. Good vid and it definitely got me thinking! Enjoy your work in general!

It could also have the opposite effect, and improve the performance of the players, because people could get more careful on how they spend their resources and wage/think better their investments when playing.

I know many of us put down paper money, but I believe it's not because it's paper money, it's because it's poor quality paper money. Real money feel really different than paper money. Just image playing with cheap plastic poker chips oppose to nice ones, flimsy money card instead of one with a nice linen finish, or tiny, flat card-stock tokens rather than thick one. It just the better made stuff, works better. Why hasn't board game publishers make good quality paper money? We have the technology, but do they have access to print money?

I never loved paper money because it got destroyed. And cooler money never prevented me for cashing in a victory nor made it easier for me to win or lose. Maybe I am... aw... special... Mmmhhh...

I wrote about this back in 2014, along with some examples of games I defend for their use of paper money: gameritis.blogspot.com/2014/09/paper-money.html
I believe that, when given proper care and relevance to the game's theme and purpose, paper money can just be as fun to have more than its less-than-fun way of being handled.
One thing, however...and I'm quite surprised no one ever even implemented this...what if an actual "play wallet" was supplied? Waiving bills is not something people commonly do anyways, but if you give it purpose and a location, wouldn't cradling that wallet give you a bigger endowment effect? To a lesser effect, Millennium Blades purposely groups its paper money into more tangible stacks of bills, giving it the heft to surpass the fact it's merely reams of paper stickered up into stacks.

The "play wallet" idea is very interesting. I believe the Godfather game by Eric Lang that's coming out this year includes little suitcases for players to store their money in. I wonder if it will have any affect, and if any other games in the months to come will follow suit?
