David Parker really good job I would love to see more ur on the road of 1 million subs keep up the excellent work I have subbed and turned on the bell for next vid
This is/was amazing. The end result is better than some new hammers from stores, great job. For a first video, you did a really great job, I love the fast forward and the sounds.
Handle install very clean. Golf Clap. Might need a bit more dome on ends to keep non-perfect strikes from making eyebrows or in this case squarebrows in the struck material. I'm sure there are smiths who strike so clean and consistent they can rock a hammer like that.
I really like how you used wood wedges to secure the hammer head ...I do not use metal wedges unless I have to or maybe use them on a big sledge hammer or splitting maul
Un artista. Grande manualità e precisione nei dettagli. Personalmente non lo useri più come martello. Si potrebbe utilizzare come soprammobile e sicuramente farebbe una bella figura.
You have a very understanding spouse; when I bring my projects in to scrub them off my neighbors 5 miles down the road can hear and see the reaction; there is usually a mushroom cloud.
How long did it have to sit in the vinegar? I am going to see if my boyfriend can do the same with an old hammerhead I have. Mine is shaped slightly different. I really enjoyed watching this video!
@@RikkiTheRose Poppycock! I saw the movies. That looks just like the movie prop but tiny without the squiggly lines on the side. And the leather strap..... And Chris Hemmsworth (Thor) at the other end... So I quess with IMAGINATION it looks like it. But LITERALLY you are probably correct.
What type of wood was used for the handle. I've got around 6 or 7 old hammer heads that I've been wanting to clean up and put handles on. Naturally lowes, home depot and northern tools dont sell handles anymore. I assume they want you to buy a new hammer. But funk that I want my old ones working again. Just not sure what type of wood will best the strongest. Thanks in advance if you'll reply!
@@DavidParker good deal thanks! Yea I know hickory is common with hammer handles. I could tell it wasnt hickory that you used by the grain. Once you oiled it. I think I'll give ashwood a try. You did a hell of a job to thats a beautiful hammer. I'm a newbie at blacksmithing and I'm acquiring all the tools gradually. That would be a hell of a flattening hammer you got there! 👍
Nice job! I am wondering why some handles have a step where the head rested and some have a ever expanding taper. I just put a hickory handle on my sledge hammer and it had the taper. I am a little worried I did not quite get the head to rest on the widest part of that shoulder. Even though tight even before inserting the wedges I should have sanded the end of the handle I think. What do you think go or no go on the handle?
I understand what vinager does but I don't understand why people use it then grind the metal until mirror finish. Am I missing something here? Enjoyed watching your video and keep them restorations coming.
Boostwerx well I wasn’t really sure how it was going to turn out with the vinegar but then also I couldn’t really get into where the logo is or the eye so I guess it was helpful with that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know that this is late but dont do what he said. The hammer head is likely already heat treated properly but it is just been mushroomed over and work hardened so you'll have to grind those bits off

@@Prickly_Mouse я вот не пойму зачем он кувалду так полирует , что аж как в зеркало в неё смотреться можно . Если после первой работы она превратиться снова в ржавую глыбу .
Why not a better choice of wood for the handle? Something that yells hard work. Looks a bit long in proportion to the steel head or is this now a purely decorative item? Just wondering with all that work you put into it one day you might need to give something a good whack or clobber and a shorter, thicker stouter handle would let that tool run as a fantastic club-hammer it’s meant to be.
It is a cheap project to make a video for a beginning RUclips channel. Plus, lots of young people watch these videos. They want to learn how to work with their hands. These types of videos show them how to start learning on easily available things. Not to mention he can buy several hammers with the views it will likely get.
tinny blacksmith because this hammer head was made for a fibreglass handle the hole tapers in both directions, so yes this is not a traditional hammer fit but it works for this particular head.
@@DavidParker yes that is called an hour Glass eye I was tough to make one pre cut going parallel to the head and just above bottom of the head than use a wood wedge along with a steel wedge across altho your way makes sense as well
I'm not sure why so many people seem to think the hammer head needs to sit against a "shelf" of sorts built into the handle. It should be a tapered fit that gets tighter the more it's driven on, and the wedge creates an opposite taper to lock it in place. A proper made hammer eye is shaped like an hourglass. Making an abrupt shelf not only prevent the head from being fully tightened, and creates a stress point where the handle is most likely to break. Just trying to be helpful; I've hung many hammers, axes, and other handled tools over the years, and it has taken experience, both good and bad, to learn this.

Beautiful build! Great choice of wood for the handle, and it turned out perfect. Way to rep the name!

Very nice. The finished product is amazing. Love the wooden handle.

I have, and still use, that exact hammer. From an old railroader. The steel is super hard and will chip with hard use.

How heavy is the hammer and what kind of wood did you use?
Great job, David. I noticed you used the oil on both handle and head. What kind of oil is that? Thanks

David Parker keep it up dude this stuff is great
I have one just like this I've used for years to split wood (hitting a wedge). the steel is very brittle and the hammer face will chip off sometimes
Take the handle off and put it in the oven, temper it back a bit

There aren't many better options than ash and a longer handle allows for a harder strike with less energy.
wyhy dont you grind it the first time? haha

Вот не пойму, зачем напильником столько времени снимать когда сразу болгаркой можно.????
Beautifull and well done. But the handle is too long for this type of hammer
