Awww thanks so much Russell 🤗
Thanks for the advice, I recently did my first wild camp and my rucksack was so heavy it felt like I was carrying a body! 😂. I filmed and posted on my channel too. 😊
Thanks for sharing some really useful tips Jem
Keep 'em coming. x
Awesome video 😊
Hi Jem, Greetings from Ireland, good info in this video for the beginners , I use the airzone 45-55 L which has a space for bladder though since I got a water filter (msr) I don't use it, best of luck with your adventures 🍀
Greetings 👋
Thanks do much for watching 🤗
Excellent video Jem, very useful, i take far more than i need, i will be scaling down significantly and will do exactly as you did such as what did i use and what didnt i use, i find camera equipment can get heavy too, so i have scaled this down too. Great video, loved it.
Thanks so much Tony! 🤗
I don't take a lot camera wise so it's not too bad for me atm 😁
Gud job jem !! Learning well !! Enjoy n stay happy always !! ❤️ Godbless !
Hi Jem. Great video. You can’t go wrong with the Petzl range of head torches….there are so many in their range, you will find something and it won’t cost the earth. Well done on being able to get your kit in a much smaller rucksack. I guess in the winter, we all end carrying more clothes, bigger sleeping bags, more food etc, so it’s always useful to have some options. Take care.
My best advice is use a 100g gas canister and get a refill adapter from Amazon for £5 and you can always top it up from the cheaper larger cans.
Einstein rechargeable head torch amazon 60g and powerful
Oh and ditch the OEX sleeping bag they’re awful heavy for very little comparable warmth in the winter, aim for a Rab 600 its half the weight.
Great videos 👍
The valveincident. I remember that now... If your Swiss army knife (Victorinox) has scissors and a saw do not switch it out for something less. I also recommand a couple of meters of some good quality tape. If the zipper on your waterproofs breaks (or you tear something) you can just tape it shut (fixed my jacket in a blizzard once). Add Imodium to your first aid kit. And finally 5 meters of paracord. Great video as always!
Good to see you progressing and pursuing your wants and needs re: your kit. At 13.30 (I think it was) you show that you are a thinker and offer some really sensible advice (you are becoming an 'old hand', so to speak). You'll always pick-up good tips and advice from others (we are all subject to light-bulb moments) but I see you becoming wise😉
We've all got slightly different requirements of our kit owing to the type of 'camping' we each indulge in (and our reasons for doing so) so we each make those weight to kit decisions (not forgetting those luxury items we're prepared to carry the extra weight for) but the most important item, I think, is the smile and sense of contentment getting into the outdoors brings.
I've said it before but it will always be a truth: ride your own road!
This was a great video, i remember the first time I cut my kit down its almost too embarrassing to state what the start weight was, well it was 27kg yeah I know. Now its around 12 and I think this lessons can be applied to all the things we own really.
I completely agree, if its not been used in 12 months..... Sell it on or recycle it 🙌
👍👍excellent Jem👍👍👌👌🤞🤞✌✌💖💖🙏🙏
Hi Jem,nice video. A little tip I would recommend regarding your water bottles on your smaller pack. You can get pouches that will attach to the front of your shoulder straps, and they will hold a couple of 500 ml bottles. I would also get a water filter ( eg. sawyer mini), so you don’t have to lug all your water with you.
Hi Jen.
Good vid. I tend to put my tent on the outside of the pack to save having to go through everything especially if it’s raining.
Most of my kit seems to be the same stuff as the army use. It’s good and rugged and lasts the test of time. So much cheaper, too.
I think mine was a tenner from a bootsale. Good as new, too.
The Petzl do a fine line in small head torches, if your interested.
All the best.❤️🔥😉🇬🇧
Another great and useful video Jem. Looking forward to videos about your Lakeland trip. My home area.
Thank you!
I've just got home.... I'm exhausted but had the best time ❤️🙌
The Lakes are such a wonderful place especially if you can avoid the crowds by going in the spring and autumn. You may also want to try out the North Pennines or maybe coast to coast along the Roman wall. Keep the videos coming, they are great to watch.
@@Allied-Aircraft-WW2 thanks Mal 🤗
You gotta try decathlons foam camping pillow £17.99 best pillow I’ve ever used bit bulky but worth it.
Thanks..... I'll check it out but probably too bulky for me 🤗
You are 🔥
Thanks Scott ☺️
The lowe alpine airzine Pro 35 45 bag has a place for water bladder inside with a hole top left fir tube marked h2o in orange writing
Hey Gary, yes I saw that but couldn't work out where the water bladder was meant to go as the hold just led into the main section of the bag. I couldn't see a seperate area if that makes sense.
@@jemsjournal it's a pocket inside on the back wall just below a zip , it has a little tag to keep bladder upright
@@garystables7173 haha, I obviously missed that 🤪
Great vid tbh you are getting there but it can get very expensive finding the low weight.i always keep my tent in the bottom compartment easy to get out and you can pack in your tent if it's raining then drop your tent and put it in the bottom side note on the tent I'd advise anything under 2kg is ok and I'd advise getting 1 that pitches all in 1 or outer 1st pitch.i mainly use the jetboil compact fairly light but I sometimes use a 750ml titanium pot and a lit brs stove there tiny it all fits in the pot.sleeping system I use a quilt I just don't like bags and it's 500g less than yours I use the extherm in winter and early spring late autumn I use the uberlite for the warmer months.i use the same pack but male version the kestral 58 for summer and the 68 for winter but yes I never use the front zip either lol careful not to go 3 small on the bag they just don't handle the weight aswell.get a water bottle add on and strap it to your shoulder harness saves using the bladder.but on the whole you are doing the right things proper planning and preparation is the key aswell know what your eating and drinking and leave the what if's at home they just had weight a sensible weight to aim for is between 7-10kg being 7 Billy basic camping 10 being a fee luxury.
A useful tip I picked up a while ago was keep the weight of your backpack to no more than 20% of your body weight, your joints will thank you when you get older.
Great video....personally I'd bin off all the electronic stuff, if you are only going wild camping you don't need to film it.
Hi Jem, great content once again.
I may be at fault and oversensitive on this point, but your poor compass! I almost shed a tear for it. Knocks can demagnetise, or even displace the needle from the jewel. I’ve even seen one dropped from waist height and cracked the dial housing, losing the liquid within.
Regarding food. Do you consider weight, or is the boost in morale worth the extra burden?
Great idea on stashing the sleeping bag liner with your sleep mat, going to see if something similar will work for me.
Stay safe 🙂
Thanks Rik, I do consider weight but I'd rather have home cooked, healthy, nutritious food over dehydrated packets so am happy to have that as a luxury item. I've seen that you can buy a dehydrater and do your own but I'm not interested in that at this stage of my journey 😊
I have a spreadsheet of all the individual components I will take on a hike ..........I hate that I have become that person 😂😂🤣
Haha, I totally get this except I love being that person 👀😂
Nearly cried when you pulled out the "monstrosity". Something like the Nitecore NU25, which you can recharge from your Anker powerbank, might be worth looking at.
I would second that, great lightweight light.
i took makeup 😂 ... nah i'm sorry keep going ❤
😂
What about a hip flask with a wee dram !!!
That's a necessity Jem !!
I also stopped using my 70 litre and now use a 45/55 for doing the WHW and winter overnights
I found the more space I had the more I crammed into it !!!
I thought the only time you weren't to blow into an inflatable mat was if it had down as the breath had moisture in it - perhaps I am wrong ?
As expected, another cool video, Jem.
Great tip at the end about separating things as you unpack after a camp......why has nobody else suggested that? Lol
I've thought about getting a larger pack when I eventually get to the camping stage (minor health setback sadly 🙄), but you've made me rethink just trying my 35l pack first.
Btw, I managed to get out this morning as planned......talk about a mental reboot! I even did my first Insta reel hahaha 😁💚
That's great news.... Well done! 🙌
@@jemsjournal hahaha thanks.....it was slow going (and a little frustrating 😂)
That little wood burner is all you need get rid of the gas burner.. It weighs more and will run out of gas.. wood is everywhere and the wood burner is lighter unless you got the steel one .. that will lighten the load.
It's definitely heavier than my gas burner weighing in at 1kg and when I'm up in the mountains wood can be hard to come by. There's also a lot more effort involved, after a full day hiking I'm usually pooped so quick and easy wins every time 🤣 but it is a great bit if kit 🙌
