    Really great video. I have a question - I edit on an SSD drive, with an M.2 for cache. Is there any benefit to changing Video/Audio Preview location to a faster M.2 drive, separate from the drive containing the project and RAW files?

    So, I have a big project and my PRV files are over 200gb. If I delete all of them, I will be okay and PP will generate new ones as needed? Or should I just delete the older ones and keep the most recent? (I’m a little thick, so apologies in advance.)

    I am happy to hit the heart$ for you if you can answer this for me... Thank you Colin, I have a Discovery Channel export preset that I have to use for our show to them. I never render, when I am finished project I just export with the designated preset to their FTP site... question is does it matter if my video preview is set to Iframe only mpeg? That seems quicker to view clips and sections of my timeline than pro res quicktime, etc...

    Heya! Hoping you can help. I cannot export my film. Always stuck at 0%. I've tried so many things (everything I can find on youtube) but nothing works. I'm wondering if its the render/preview files? As I've noticed these files are in several different folders. Probably because of creating new versions and importing timelines to new projects. Perhaps having them all in the same folder will make it work? Is it really safe to delete all the preview/render files?? I've tried rendering my timeline from scratch but when I open it back up, I get that box which says many of the render files are missing and located somewhere else. Many thanks indeed!!

    Hey Colin, great video. Question if I may, if you are using a different preview file format to what your footage is (say iFrame instead of ProRes 422) could this explain why there can be a difference in colour when you've rendered? I use a lot of colour effects and I notice I can sometimes get a different looking image to the one that is displayed pre-render. Never thought of it before, but perhaps using a lower quality preview could be the reason why.......thoughts?

    Hello Again Colin.
    When exporting as avi lagarith or uncompressed which is lossless.
    I check use preview files, I am rendering with pro res 422 which makes lossy mov files
    Does that mean my lossless output will be lossy?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 года назад

      I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Lossless workflows don't exist in the video world. You media is lossy to start. With any camera. The movies we watch on the big screen are lossy.
      If you want the absolute best image quality, then use what the VFX guys use - OpenEXR. BUT, that format exports individual frames with no audio. You'll need a ton of storage and nothing will play it back in real time.
      So my recommendation is to import your media. Work in a Sequence that reflects your export format. And when you're ready, export to that format. That will give you the best quality.

      @@VideoRevealed Look At It This Way.
      You may have an unsupported Premiere file eg mkv or just to heavy to handle like hevc h.265.
      (My Videos Are Downloaded Not Recorded)
      Therefore you convert it to h264 which is lossy, with the audio as aac pass through or copy which is lossless.
      Import the mp4 into Premiere, Cut it subtitles, change colours etc.
      Sequence Preview Format Apple Prorez Anything
      Then have the Export format as avi lagarith or uncompressed which is lossless & Previews cause that speeds up the save
      Then Compress The Video Again In Idealshare, Xmedia Recode, Format Factory etc just Into a smaller file
      The Video I am playing on a portable dvd player that only supports vob avi & mpg
      Or My PSP Which Only Plays mp4

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the 1080p limitation of the MPEG format. If you are working in 4k, your preview files will still be in 1080p which is useless when it comes to exporting in 4k. I use a lot of third-party transitions which are render Hogs. They must be rendered in order to be previewed on the timeline. It makes sense to export in the same format so that you can use the previews and then convert that export to H.264. That actually saves quite a bit of rendering time in the export process.

    • @stephenfleming8030

      I really never thought of transcoding the final render! I've avoided using 'Smart Render' because I typically work with 4K but on a 1080 timeline and I export to .264 for RUclips. Setting previews to my export format doesn't make sense as .264 is horrible to work with on the timeline. Indeed, I don't even know if you can set previews to that format.
      I set previews to Pro Res 422, which is what I transcode all my footage to. Huge file sizes for sure, but my timeline is super smooth in this codec.

    Thanks for this but what I have found is a serious flaw is that even in a simple 1 layer edit if you even cut a point the whole preview is dumped. Adobe really should sort this so you can atleast do cuts and that it should only lose the preview for the bits that then gain extra layers or transitions otherwise its a big time waster.

    nice info Thanks! so if i work with underpower machine, and working with prores proxy for h.264 file, which preview format should I choose for fast preview? and for the output video would be an mp4 or mov like youtube required

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  2 года назад

      You can't pick just any format as a preview file so if you're going to RUclips, you'll still have to render H.264. That means you're system will be slow no matter what settings you pick. Sorry.

    What if the final export is going to be ProRES, does it make sense to choose ProRES as the preview format instead of mpeg? And is there a difference between pre-rendering in to out vs selecting all and rendering?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 года назад

      It will be faster to export but only if the previews are identical to the Timeline Any changes will have to render. I find it rare that the previews are identical; there are always tweaks that cause a full render.
