With the borders still closed, Josh and his cousin Macey went out to try and get the double on two bears. In past years Josh has focused on guiding clients to big bears and hasn't had a good opportunity to hunt one himself until now. This was youth hunter Macey's first night bear hunting and she did an excellent job in the stand. Josh was trying to get an archery bear and Macey was trying to get a rifle bear. It was a great night at the bait, Josh shot a Boone and Crockett bear and Macey had a good opportunity on a big boar as well.
The lying down shot taken by Josh is not a shot we encourage or recommend, however it can be done with a well placed shot.
The bear squared out at 7'8" skull in, officially scored at 20 11/16 Boone and Crockett. An old Manitoba monster bear with missing teeth and lots of battle scars.
All the meat from Josh's bear was used. If you don't already take your bear meat, please do. It's healthy and delicious, just make sure to cook to an internal temperature of 160 F.
Josh's set up is a Matthews Halon 32 set to 70 lbs with a 470 grain Easton axis arrow tipped with an afflictor K2-fixed broadhead. The arrow had 75 grains of brass up front and a 100 grain broadhead which gives adequate front of center and the overall mass provides good momentum. If you're building an arrow specifically for bear hunting a heavy arrow can work well as you're usually going to have a close shot and bears rarely drop. Pair this with a sharp fixed blade broadhead with a good cutting diameter like the Afflictor K2-fixed and you have a lethal set up.
