If there's a perceived difference between the pit lanes (and it could be a very real difference due to pre-existing rubber) then it doesn't make sense to do a best of three system. Do two rounds and then add the times between the two rounds.
The best of three Systemes isn’t bad as it isn’t based on randomly giving one or another a better time by having one driver be stuck in the worse lane twice, it is used to give the team who was the fastest of the two rounds an advantage . This gives more of a balance as if one team is way better and happens to have something fail on one turn, they have a better time in the next or previous, so they still have a chance, if the rounds were averaged it would be more rewarding to consistency, rather than speed. It really doesn’t matter all too much but the event is supposed to showcase speed over consistency. It's flaws gives one driver a major advantage, however it nullifies mistakes and rewards being the faster team.
