    I work today as an arranger and music producer, as drums were an instrument that I played for many years, I can feel what sounds natural in a vst and what sounds artificial, I've used about 30 different drum vsts and I always thought they weren't enough to the result I expected to hear! Because in vsts this is how it happens, when you install any vst you will notice that it is good in some things and disappointing in others! The best result I got for the drum sound using vsts was using the room, overs and hit-hat from Addictive Drums and using the snare, kick and toms from GGD and the crashes use real sounds that I have recorded and add manually later. ..So the battery in the daw looks like this:
    Channel 1 in stereo from the Addictive Drums "ROOM"
    Chaneel 2 in stereo from the Addictive Drums "OVERS"
    Channel 3 in mono of the Addictive Drums "HIT-HAT"
    Channel 4 in mono from the GGD "SNARE"
    Channel 5 in mono from the GGD "KICK"
    Chanel 6 in stereo from the GGD "TOMS"
    Observations: In both the ambience and the overs I leave them without crahs, because I want to hear only kick drum, snare and toms from these channels, especially because the cymbals of any vst sound artificial, so later I add sounds from cymbals that I have recorded in wav manually, I usually use two, then I place one on each channel, opening their pan by 40% on each side. Another detail is that when I mix these two different vsts, I try to tune the snare drum, bass drum and toms of the two vsts with the same tuning and leave both kits without any of their original effects, I leave them both natural, so that I can add the effects and compression of my preference and according to the music I will produce to add glue to the mix.

    • @chrisbedan
      @chrisbedan  3 года назад

      @@garganjua9435 hey man, apologies for the delay!
      There may be a few reasons for this.
      First I would check the buffer rate in your audio settings. The lower the number the less latency when hitting the pads. However it’s more demanding on your PC so that may be what the clicks and pops are coming from.
      What I do is, raise my buffer rate until I can find a good balance of less latency and no clicks and pops!
      Also, make sure your drivers and computer are updated.
      Another idea would to see if you need to download a driver called ASIO. Google it to learn more about it!
      Let me know if that helped, my friend!!

    • @garganjua9435
      @garganjua9435 3 года назад

      Chris Bedan thanks mate I’ll give that a go, I do use Mac though and all I can see about ASIO is for windows? It’s annoying as I have the free version of Steven Slate and there’s not a single click or pop whatsoever. I shall have a go later at the buffer size to try that. I don’t have any issues with latency as yet either.
      Thanks for replying again man much appreciated.

    Hey man, thank you SO much for this tutorial! I've been stuck with this hi-hat thing for two days now, and I could not figure out how to get this right. I'm using "modern & massive" from GGD, but it's almost the same mapping. But I still don't got it quit right. I think it has to do with how hard you push down on the hihat pedal. If the Hat CC position for the mapping is pushed down to, lets say to 45 (in modern & massive there are acutal numbers besides the HAT CC POS. They start at, I guess at 127 - full velocity and if you push down on the pedal goes down from there to zero. Depending on how hard you push the pedal down.) If I told moderns & massive I push the pedal to 45 CC POS. Everything below that (44-0) is not triggert. The hats are again completely silence. Any idea how to fix this?
    And have you experience with EZDrummer2 from Toontracks? Is it easier there to get the hi hat to work right?

      Hey man, apologies for the delayed response! for some reason im not seeing these notifications.
      Anyways, i did have this problem for a while on the roland kit i was using.. what i found out is, is that there is a "hihat calibration" menu in the brain.
      I want to say its in the "trigger' settings. once i did that, it helped out a TON!
      You can also customize it to your foot pressure!
      i havent actually setup the kit to ez drummer or superior so im not too sure on those settings unfortunately...

    Great tutorial. Of course another hi-hat question - I'm using a Roland VH-12SV hihat on a TD-20sx setup (midi out only, not midi to usb like later models), and this gets the tip working for the hi-hat, but not the edge. Seems like the edge takes up the same midi note as CC (A#1). Have you figured out how to get the edge working or is this only supported on later models?

My kit (Alesis DM10) only sends one midi note regardless of how it is played so I can only set the CC and pedal note. When I play a closed hat, it works fine. But if I play an open hat with no pedal use, it just plays the last drum that was hit? So if I hit a snare and then an open hat, it just plays the snare twice. So you dont need an audio interface to do this? Its just the one cable from the module to a pc?

      @@chrisbedan All good man! I'd figured it out anyway, and have been rocking out the GGD Modern and Massive on the electric kit, and I must say its the best thing ive ever done with using an e-kit, the sound and even the feel of it, makes a world of difference.
