I’ve eaten In-N-Out Burger before and I’ve eaten Five Guys before… but this was my first time to ever eat them back to back. In this video I’m taking you on a full burger review comparison between In-N-Out and Five Guys, two burger chains with extremely loyal followings.
In-N-Out Burger
I ordered the Double Double and extra crispy fries. Now to keep things consistent for the review, I couldn’t go all crazy with their secret menu of toppings, so all I ordered was extra onions.
Prices - Double Double - $3.85, Extra crispy fries - $1.80
The Double Double from In-N-Out is indeed extremely tasty and salty and it has an amazing balance of tastes and everything goes together in such harmony. However, after finishing the Double Double I walked away still quite hungry.
Five Guys
Next we drove over to Five Guys, luckily just a 5 minute drive from In-N-Out Burger. Again, I kept it pretty simple and just ordered their cheeseburger all the way, and a side of regular fries. You’ll notice immediately that the prices are twice as high as In-N-Out, however, we’ll find out that their burger weight probably twice as much as well.
Prices - Cheeseburger - $7.99, Fries - $4.29
The Five Guys Cheeseburger is heavy and dense, and they already press down the bun for you, so it’s not fluffy at all. The ingredients inside are great, and I especially enjoyed the mushrooms inside. The burger is definitely not as salty as In-N-Out, however it tastes better quality.
VERDICT:
It sort of depends on what mood you’re in, and you do have to take into account that Five Guys is twice as expensive as In-N-Out - so you could eat two Double Doubles for the same price as one Five Guys cheeseburger.
I think the In-N-Out Double Double is tastier, possibly because it’s saltier, but the Five Guys burger tastes fresher, more natural, and a little more home-cooked styles. Overall, I would choose Five Guys more often than In-N-Out Burger. That’s my final verdict.

As a Los Angeles native, I can also appreciate the homies in the background also eating and nodding their heads in enjoyment. In the thirty plus years that I've lived in California, and been an avid fan of In-N-Out, they have NEVER gotten my order wrong. My best friend in high school worked at an In-N-Out in Torrance, CA and she still says it was the best job she ever had, just because she was paid well and taken care of. She was there for about a decade.
Also, the late world renowned chef and journalist Anthony Bourdain once said that In-N-Out was the only fast food restaurant worth a damn in America. Also, his favorite was a Double-Double Animal style. And yes, he knew about Five Guys. But did he ever talk about them? Right. That's what I thought.

For someone who worked at Five Guys for 4 years and has had In-N-Out, his description couldn't be more accurate. Both strive to maintain the quality and simplicity of a burger, but have different takes. Five Guys (atleast when I worked there before the sons started dipping in on the Murrell brother's business) was a very traditional home made quality burger with boardwalk style fries. Never close the bag or let them sit without air, the fries and burgers sweat sogging up. In-N-Out has that salter, more fast food ascetic, but models the Five Guys quality food and clean service motto they strive to maintain. For the price, In-N-Out. For the value and quality if ordered in person, Five Guys with the right crew who knows how to do it up right. Great review 👍
In-N-Out makes the best classic American burger of any chain. But if you want a bit more variety in flavors, then Five Guys selection of toppings and the fact that they have bacon make them superior in that respect. I definitely prefer the fries at Five Guys, they taste more like legit, real potatoes. The value at In-N-Out is way better though. They both have their pro's and cons.
I like Five Guys burgers overall, although they do seem a bit heavier, and I do not crave them on a regular basis like I do In-N-Out burgers. Still 5 Guys burgers with shrooms are pretty good.
What I am though, is the odd man out, in that I don't actually like 5 Guys fries. The peanut oil flavor really lingers, and they're greasy, making them seem heavier.
Are In-N-Out fries my favorite fries as well? No, but I do actually prefer them to 5 Guys fries (especially animal style). That's why I said odd man out. I actually like In-N-Out fries even by themselves, whereas 5 Guys fries for me are just too heavy and that peanut oil for me is a nonstarter.
That In-N-Out burger is probably the closest I have seen a takeaway burger look to the menu picture.
And they didn’t make it look that way because it was for mark that’s the same presentation everyone gets. They’re definitely at the top of the list when it comes to that.

My dad was a manager at five guys for a few years. It is an immaculately run company. They used to have secret shoppers who would come in and rate their stores and if they got a high enough score they would get to do certain cool stuff at the end of the year. One year they took all the managers skydiving !

Cheese Burger for the first time, and it was THE YUMMIEST CHEESEBURGER AND FRIES I HAD EVER TASTED IN MY LIFE!!! 😍

A burger like that for less than $4 looks like an insane deal to someone like me who's from Europe. We have the usual McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, but beyond that you don't have any other options other than the fancier $15 burgers at actual restaurants.

@tactical-bucket Yeah, the owners want to keep it accessible. Their ingredients are quality and fresh--never frozen. Lettuce hand sheathed, buns freshly baked, fries freshly cut, etc. That's why In-N-Out hasn't expanded quickly, they have to be within a certain distance from their distribution centers.
It works for them. In-N-Out usually has lines snaking down parking lots for days at all hours of the day and night.
In and Out rules! Mark, you HAVE to get peppers on the side next time! They are pickled cara bella peppers and have a great bite to.them.Great whole on the side with the burgers.You can get them chopped on the burger too.Animal style will get u burgers grilled with mustard. No extra charges for off menu prep or extras! Ur right about fries but no hydrogenated oils or additives.Just the freshly cut potatoes in the oil.

@j mula In n Out in my opinion is the perfect fast food burger. Inexpensive, get your food pretty quick, and a perfect balance of quality ingredients in the burger. They may be pretty basic burger ingredients, but it really is the perfect burger.

I haven't been to In-and-Out since 2012. My uncle and I deal with social anxiety. (Didn't know what that was back then . . .) He'd did, however, find a bit of calm after I took him from a couple other restaurants in Millbrae, Ca where I had moved stuff into a storage unit temporarily and he totally calmed down after eating a double-double with fries at the In-and-Out there.

Honestly, my fav fast food burger is Nations Burger. In California and west coast. Great stuff. Good breakfasts too, cakes and pies.
As a native Southern Californian, I'll have to stick with In and Out not only because it originated So. Cal, but also because I spent many an afternoon from time to time eating In and out with my late mother and watching the planes as they came in for their landings @ LAX.

Mark, one of the best additions you can get to the cheeseburger is the hot peppers.
And that’s the slowest In-N-Out I’ve ever seen.
I enjoy all your videos, and it was great to see your family.
I went to In-N-Out Burger for the second time this past Saturday and as Mark experienced I was still a bit hungry after leaving. Another thing I will say for them is that their dining room is open late. I arrived there after 11 pm. and the dining room was packed.
It's been several years since what I believe was my third visit to Five Guys. I recall the burgers as being good enough but my not being too fond of the greasy, crispy fries. Going just by memory of dining in Five Guys I would give In-N-Out Burger, which I think has better fries, the edge here.
If you throw Whataburger into the mix they're my pick. The burgers, which will also satisfy your appetite, and the fries are better than those of either of the aforementioned.
Order a 4x4 animal style. You’ll be all set👍
The fries at In ‘n Out are to me the biggest downside. They’re pretty inedible, aren’t cooked right or something. They just don’t taste right and I understood why Mark reacted that way to them and tried to get tastier fries by ordering them fried twice, but they’re still just not good. The burgers are pretty good, especially for the price, but quality wise there’s no comparison. It goes to 5 Guys. But for the price, the burger at In n Out is a good deal for sure. If you want the full experience, a good, satisfying burger and good fries, definitely 5 guys if you don’t mind paying a little more (it’s not quite double, it’s less than double because they also ordered a drink too at 5 guys, but if you want to pay less and decent fries don’t matter, In nOut is your place.
@starsalign9336 In-N-Out burgers ingredients are quality too--fresh and never frozen. Lettuce hand sheaved, buns baked freshly. Fries fleshly cut.
You can also get 3x3, 4x4, so there's no missing out on heft unless you choose to do so. And they pay attention to presentation unlike 5 Guys which are smooshed in foil.
Don't get me wrong, I like 5 Guys burgers too. But I don't crave them regularly like Mark said (what he didn't do was increase the patty count at In-N-Out). 5 Guys with shrooms and/or bacon is pretty good. Still I just never crave 5 Guys burgers--and every time I've gone to their near empty restaurants, they have nowhere near the lines In-N-Out does--for a reason, and I don't think its just price.
As far as fries, many people give 5 Guys fries the preference, but I may be the odd man out here. I don't like the fact they are fried in peanut oil--that taste lingers, and the oil, makes the fries greasy and heavier, while somehow seeming dry. It's just the peanut oil, is a no no for me.
While In-N-Out fries are not my favorite, I still prefer them to 5 Guys fries (again I know I'm the odd man out here). They are lighter, and can taste the potato flavor more than the peanut infused 5 Guys fries. Getting them animal style is a different argument (but I love these).
When it comes to service, consistency, and cleanliness I also prefer In-N-Out. Much more consistent whereas 5 Guys, has been hit or miss depending on location.

I was fortunate enough to have In n Out & Five Guys within close proximity to my High School and I've enjoyed both joints frequently and I can honestly say that In n Out the one I can eat almost everyday and not get sick of it. And I've tried. The price, the quality of ingredients, the secret menus and just great service every time I visit is just unforgettable. Five Guys on the other hand is great too but I'd say it's more of a guilty pleasure. Their quality of ingredients is fair between the two but Five Guys is a bit more expensive but they have free peanuts and an extensive customization on the menu ingredients. Overall, they're both great burger joints but at the end of the day it's all fan rivalry and preference.

April 7, 2022---Thanks for the video. There's now 3 In N Out's in Reno, with the 3rd just opening in the past month. Used to drive truck and had my first burger from them while down for my 10 hours of mandatory rest time. This was in southern Calif. I really do like their double double cheeseburgers, but not their fries....I prefer long ones like McDonalds/Wendys serve. I also like mine plain....just extra pickles and onions only and their largest tea. Checked and there's a 5 guys burger joint also here in Reno, so will give 'em a try. Only problem with In N Out is they're so damn popular and more than once, didn't want to deal with the crowd inside of it or going thru the drive thru.

No, there are probably a lot of people wondering this. He said that he is exercising a lot, and honestly even without exercising a lot you wouldn’t get fat by eating a burger for a video if you have a balanced diet, these are food reviews, not his daily diet.

In-N-Out is more than just the burger. We've had In-N-Out here in the Salt Lake area for at least 10 years now. But being from California originally it feels like part of home. It's about burgers but also the beach, cars and girls. Not always in that order.
I can't fault anyone who prefers 5 Guys over In-N-Out but my personal preference is always going to be In-N-Out. Great video by the way.
I love in-n-out burger better. I always get a 4 by 4 because you get more filling from it. And I get the protein style and animal fries as well with a large chocolate shake. Just so damn delicious 😋.

You Can’t say regardless of price…. Five Guys is literally twice more expensive. Both are very good burgers and Five Guys is definitely cheaper than going to Red Robbin or Islands but IN N OUT is hands down the better over all burger from taste price and ambiance. Not to mention their service is very consistent no matter how busy they get.

they’re both good but Five Guys seems more greasy to me, which a lot of times makes the burger kinda soggy. In N Out’s burger is definitely better but Five Guys def has better fries
