Some sound mastering tips: When downsampling, you can help reduce unwanted noise/artifacts by using sample rates that are multiples/divisible of eachother. Since our final is SGDK's 16000Hz, starting your recording with Audacity set to 32000Hz or 48000Hz will get you the best results when you get to the SGDK's final compression. You may want to @6:25 try recording in mono or first mix the channels, and apply effects (that you can't or arent going to do in realtime on megadrive).
2:03 I don't remember Black Lagoon being THAT sexy, I feel like I missed out somehow. Fascinating video and I learned a lot even though I will never use any of it, it still lets me appreciate how games are made and all the effort it takes.
Pit Fighter's got samples extracted from the movie "Bloodfist"... During the first 35 seconds of the movie we can easily hear that famous scream "ALL RIGHT!"
hi pigsy. just wondering if you would mind re-uploading those mega drive instruments. folder 01 to 05 seem to be empty when i download them. the individual game folders are empty....i mean . thanks for any help and thanks for all these good videos
Can you explain why the sample played by the genesis/emulator sounds so much worse (fluttery/worbly) than the two female voice samples that you inputted? Is there any technique that can be used to reduce this? I am struggling to understand what transformation is taking place when the genesis plays the sample. Is there an additional bit rate reduction happening?
I'm pretty sure that it's just a limitation of the hardware ( or the sound driver). I will do another video of SFX once I get more experience with creating them and may be able to offer more advice then
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials I dug into this topic a bit more myself and it appears to be a limitation of the SGDK sound driver used causing the issue rather than the sample format you used. I don't know if the newer SGDK versions address this or provide alternate options for SFX playback but it isn't a limitation of the Genesis.
@@retroarcadefan There are other sound drivers available. Maybe it's that XGM favours compression over quality and other drivers will result in a larger rom size but better quality. I haven't used any other dirvers except XGM1/2, so can't give too much advice, but feel free to explore the options yourself
POWER FIST!
I already knew this software, it's what I use. I always try to make the WAV as small as possible before compiling.
Great video!
SFX are one of the big rom eaters, so the smaller the better for sure!

Possible clocks animated on marble gallery?
Low pitched is reminiscent of Warcraft 1 and Doom :D
It does a bit!
Another great one. You know right how much you bring to the MD community ❤

I still play golden axe 2 it's my favorite golden axe game
I think it's a little under-rated. The music in particular is great!
Very usefull content as always. Thanks, master.

I like 80s/90s martial arts films, but haven't seen that one. Looks like the full movie is on youtube, so I'll check it out!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Exactly! It's on youtube 😃

I created a new upload link, so try again and let me know if anything is missing
How do you get rid of the scratchy sounds on the Megadrive?
I think it's just an effect of playing back at a low "resolution"
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Be cool if you can do a tutorial on that.

How mano sfx channels is castlevvania using?
I'm using 3 channels
I love streets of rage but what I don't like they made adam so dang slow on purpose 😒 so he would be unlikable character
Adam was my least favourite of the 3 due to his slow speed, although I did like playing as Max in 2 (his slide helped counter the slowness)
