Honda’s new HR-V has been charming Australian buyers now for just over two years. And, as luck would have it, I’ve had it for the last three months to charm me.
During that time we loaded it up with three tall teenagers on a go-karting trip, carried tall plants that only the HR-V or a ute could and pounded down the Hume to Canberra.
We drove it through unbearable heat, bucketing rain, out on the freeway and on Sydney’s sorry excuse for a road network. Here’s what we found out.
Space. Here, here and here and more here.
The HR-V is gigantic inside. Basketballers could sit in the front and probably in the back too, there’s tons of space.
More to the point, there’s no wasted space. The central console is so deep you think you’re reaching into a black hole.
The rear seats have acres of room for long legs and broad shoulders, and the boot is the biggest in class at 437 litres.
The Magic Seats, while not as super clever as the Jazz’s, mean you have a very flexible load and passenger area.
Here you can stick all your cables and they stay right out of the way, just poking up here.
It’s an extremely well-thought out interior, just really clever but really simple at the same time. We haven’t needed the manual once. That’s a win.
This car is almost the perfect suburban warrior. When you look at the engine’s numbers, they’re nothing special - 105kW and 172Nm to drag 1400kgs sounds positively snore-inducing.
And, to be fair, it is. It’s not a fast car. But, with the excellent Honda CVT keeping the engine where it needs to be, it gets along just fine, thanks very much. Around town, you don’t need anymore and if you did, you’d just burn more petrol.
And this is the bit we liked - it never used more than 7.7L/100km. Rain, hail, shine, heatwave, didn’t miss a beat.
Speaking of, this has Lexus-worthy air-conditioning. This thing is cold before we’ve backed out of the driveway. Not cool. Cold.
This car has AEB, plenty of airbags and the usual ABS and traction and stability controls as standard, along with a five star ANCAP rating. Spend $1100 more and you get lane departure, collision warning and high beam assist.
There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with it on the freeway, but it’s not as good as its around town efforts. The tyres are noisy against a lot of surfaces and it really doesn’t like crosswinds.
I’d prefer a bit more stability on the freeway in trying weather conditions but we reckon most buyers won’t be spending too much time motorway bombing.
There’s a few niggles. The leather or leatherlike material on the seats and steering wheel gets super hot in the sun, so watch out for that. The reversing camera is good but LaneWatch dazzles you at night when hit the left indicator. And, er, that’s it.
We’ve enjoyed our time with the Honda. We knew it was a good car, but three months with it showed it to be a versatile mini-SUV that is more than capable of squaring up to Nissan, Mazda and Mitsubishi. I’d like to see Honda’s 1.5 turbo in it, even as an option.
It also confirmed to me that the HR-V is the best at what it does. It’s a small form compact SUV with the interior of a big one. Perfect for families, easy to live with and it even looks alright, especially in blue.
And, best of all, the things it does best you get in every HR-V, not just the top spec VTi-L. So it doesn’t matter which one you buy.

Got one as a daily driver since my 4X4 just isnt reliable any more (its an 03 with a buncha miles). I wasn't sure about the CVT, but its fine so far. I didnt care for it at first & just got it because its a "smart choice". Its grown on me a bit tho, its a charming little bugger!

I know it's silly but the lack of a volume turning knob is the ONLY think that keeps me from getting this car. Yes it has space and safety but I'm only going to need that when the time calls for it which is 1%. 99% of the time I need an proper volume knob and not some stupid touch screen screen crap.

It has a volume control on the steering wheel. I think that's a good alternative.

The base LX model has a volume knob, and don't have a touch screen. In the USA anyway.

Do people care that CVT is too slow to win a race? What race?
