One important sociocultural aspect of Momotetsu that was explained to me by a Japanese parent is that the game is a great excuse to teach your kids about Japanese geography.

Momotarou Dentetsu was the basis of Mario Party, developed by the same company Hudson Soft

It is a very long running series, so I wonder if the entries from the mid-90s have more in common with Mario Party...

So, this was/is the annual sports game for many households, huh? You right on these deserving more western coverage, if they're THAT popular.
Also, this sounds like someone tried to blend The Game of Life with Monopoly and then cut that mixture with Candy Land.

The last one (on Switch, from 2020) sold over 4 million copies in Japan. It's more than any individual Castlevania and about as well as all of the Contra games together (officially, of course, if you don't count the bootlegs). This is arguably one of the most popular Japan-exclusive series. Super Robot Wars is close, but some games from that series at least were released abroad.

Must be the most popular series in Japan that never got any Western release, and consequently one that few people outside of Japan know of. I actually tried the newest game a couple months back... gotta say that it's a 'bit' less random, but I just don't see the appeal regardless. Still, if a game sells millions, there must be something they did right... or maybe it's just that Konami doesn't really seem to care about the Western market anymore.

I've got a bunch of Momotarou Dentetsu games in my library since I toss in oddball cheap games as overseas shipping filler. Never could get into any of them, though...

Hmmm....this series probably is a candidate for the "one of the most popular/influential series of all time in Japan, unreleased and super obscure overseas" list, but it's probably not number one with a bullet. Off the top of my head, other games/series that compete with Momotarou Dentetsu are stuff like Sakura Taisen and Tokimeki Memorial. You could even argue for stuff like Dragon Quest, Yokai Watch, and (until recently) Monster Hunter due to the enormous gulf in popularity between regions (remember that period when every other Japanese developer was trying to make a Monster Hunter clone while the most recent MonHan PSP games weren't even getting released in the West?).

Obviously working my way through the backlog when the algorhythm recommended momotaro densetsu, I of course had to look this game up next! When I imported my first Japanese PS2 some years ago it was a set that came with a few games... momoten #15 was one of them so I have a little bit of experience with the series.
