Adore the Band so much. Man they were players and Richard Manuel could really sing. My favourite by the band though is It Makes No Difference with Rick Danko singing lead. Will break your heart. Version from the Last Waltz is great.
Great choice and great reaction, gentleman. This one features their “third” lead vocalist, Richard Manuel. His voice was perfect for this song. And the carnival-like organ fills from Garth Hudson make it unmistakably The Band’s work.
This is a great one. Richard Manuel was the 3rd vocalist!! Middle level, Rick Danko up high, and Levon Helm down low. The secret weapon “JPJ” of the Band is Garth Hudson, the only one still alive. 3 part vocal harmonies, Robbie’s guitar, no wonder they inspired everyone. Also, the greatest “Americana” Band is actually 4 Canadians and Levon from Arkansas. Dig on that! Dylan had them back him up cause he knew how great a weapon they were for him to “plug in”. You can’t miss with anything from the first 4 albums. Love to see more.
The Band the only band that a genre was named around ( back then) they were a teenage band who was so good Ronnie Hawkins took them as his band , then they were great on their on then Bob Dylan asked them to be his band on his first electric tour. Their voices are so young in this recording. I’m so used to later on when they have a bit more gravel in their sound. Love love love them
Garth Hudson. One of the most unique and eccentric keyboard masters that ever was. Watch him live. He literally sits in the middle of a PILE of keyboards like some mad scientist. Last I heard he was in his 90's in some nursing home.

The Dead opened Sunday in sunshine as I recall + I loved it. The Band was great as well + toughed it out during the downpour, poor Garth. Saturday was outstanding @ Watkins Glen.
The Band was so good. They all had soulful voices, four of them Rick, Levon, Richard and occasionally Robbie. Garth was the only one who didn't sing. He's the only one remaining. His parents thought rock was sketchy. So he arranged to give music lessons to the other 4! So he could spin it like he was an instructor instead of a rock musician. At the beginning. Then they had success, so it was all good. They hit Big with their first album in '68. And of course their concert film around '78
The Band were a *huge* influence on everybody in the 70s, including SD. FUN FACT: Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs covered this song in the DUkes of September

The song is about ending up on Skid Row. Written by Robbie Robertson, CCR, etc.. This particular album was fraught with disagreements about direction and tone. But it was magical. What a great song thanks for playing it.
So many good songs by this incredible group. A few of my favorites are the soulful Don’t Do It from the live Rock of Ages album (you’ll love that one - written by Motown legends Holland Dozier Holland, by the way), the gorgeous I Shall Be Released from the live Before the Flood album with Bob Dylan and Acadian Driftwood from the later Northern Lights-Southern Cross album. Check ‘em out, boys!
Normally I say that the best version of a song to hear is the studio version for a first listen, but in the case of The Band, the best versions of most of their songs are from The Last Waltz movie soundtrack. This song included. The only one that is not worth bothering with is the song "The Weight" with the Staple Singers. There is a live version from The Last Waltz of The Band playing the song by themselves on stage though. That's the one to find and listen to.

The Band is the ONLY Band that Eric Clapton really wanted to be a part of but wasn't. Their music - even though most of the members are Canadian - is the literal melting pot of Americana: bluegrass, country, folk & Rock w/ a little pop sensibilities thrown in - GREAT HOOKS. So many great tunes .. you guys should do 'Ophelia' next but the LIVE version from The Last Waltz (seminal Rock documentary directed by Martin Scorsese) #rockOn :)

Hope you guys make it checking out the old bootlegged recordings these guys recorded with Bob Dylan in the basement of an old rural NY house, the said recordings, The Basement Tapes. It’s some of the best and most interesting music you’ll ever hear. And the Steely Dan mention, hit the nail on the head.
This album was produced by the great Todd Rundgren, and he was about 22 years at the time. Without Todd Rundgren’s 50 years of work in music (songwriting, singing, multi-instrumentalist, a member of Utopia, a member of Ringo’s All Star Band). Yes. Genius! This was pre-rap by a few decades.
Never a big Band person (yeah, I said it), but I have enjoyed some of Robbie Robertson's solo stuff. Some of the tunes to check out are Hell's Half Acre, Somewhere Down the Crazy River (which had a lot of radio airplay, a very different song), American Roulette, and Broken Arrow. These are generally a lot more rocking than what he did in The Band. On the album, he got help from Peter Gabriel, Bono, Terry Bozzio, and Adam Clayton. RIP big fella.

Loved Levon Helm.. He turned out to be a pretty good actor as well, turning up in many movies with that perfect southern accent and delivery. The Band was just a good combination of quality musicians and some very original writing... Good choice guys... This song always reminds me of Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well...

I love The Basement Tapes. When I need a musical reset that’s one of the main albums are turn to.
