    I am really mixed here... My parakeets get really unhappy if put in any room but my main living room/ kitchen area, but that's where we use Teflon pans! I don't have control over who uses the kitchen either and I know most people won't move the cage out of the room if they're going to cook! It is a pretty big room, but I'm still nervous.

    Hello! I just found your channel and I was wondering something. I'm planning on making an outdoor aviary for my four budgies. But I don't really know how big to make it and what to put in it to keep them fully entertained, or if it's safe for me to do that. I live in Minnesota so they'd only be out during the summer days and I'd take them in at night to make sure they'd be safe. Thank you for your time and I hope to get a response.

      Thanks so much. I've had my birds for a few weeks now and I can finally get my birds to step onto my finger (if I offer millet) but can't seems to get them out of the cage without scaring them

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

      Just feed them closer and closer to the cage opening if you can, or once they perch, just bring them very slowly to the opening, but let them fly back if they are scared. Eventually, they should get used to it. It does take budgies a while to get used to new environments.

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад +1

      EthenyFlame I have never heard of a TV or phone harming a budgie. Teflon fumes and chemical fumes are usually some of the biggest household hazards.

    how big should a cage for two budgies be?

  • @legenddarkrai
    @legenddarkrai 9 лет назад +1

    How do I clean the cage fully, like take perches out etc, with 4 semi-tamed parakeets? In a previous video you said not to cause them stress and not force them to do anything, but then how would I clean the cage without giving them stress or not to have them fly around aimlessly when I either have to grab them or chase them back into the cage, because I don't want to do that.

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

      Legenddarkrai/Watermellonduke Take a look at my video about how to clean your bird cage, as it may help. One of the things I highlight there is to just take the cage top off (if it detaches) and set it down somewhere with the birds in it. That may work for you if you do it very gently. I would recommend taming your birds a bit more, so they are at least comfortable with your putting your hand in the cage. Slow and quiet movements are best, especially in the beginning, so they don't associate your presence with a lot of disruption. If they are really worried, even taking some time to just talk to them can help. Hand feeding in the cage can also make them associate your hand with something good!

    How often do you clean the cage a week? Does the newspaper work well for the 'bedding'?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

      Orca Revelation Newspaper works very well as a cage tray liner. Just avoid putting the highly colored pages on top, as the ink is not good for birds to consume. I clean my cage completely once per week. Also, in the middle of the week, I will just change the paper out. I clean out food/water bowls daily.

    I got 2 new budgies and spent more money on the cage, toys, Etc. and I don't have enough money for a new cage for me to wash the cage throughly without the bird getting wet. I have a old cage in my garage but it's pretty small. What should I do?

    • @GhostKills
      @GhostKills 8 лет назад

      galaxy star You should put it in that old age as long as they can fit and can't get out. The cleaning is just a quick process so you can put the birds back in the cage after you clean their cages.

      Leandro Hernandez You should have them checked out by an avian vet if they are inactive, just to make sure nothing is wrong (or to get treatment if it is).

    I want to get a budgie but I'm not sure if I should. Many people say they're great for apartment pets but you say not to put them near a kitchen..but my living room is with the kitchen...so I'm not sure if it's safe to put a budgie in a spot in my living room that is the furthest away from the kitchen...

    • @wemuk5170
      @wemuk5170 7 лет назад

      Sarah, you could be absolutely fine. Our living room & kitchen is open-plan downstairs. Our budgie has a woody playground he loves in our large family kitchen. He flies freely so we take him to his cage in the living area each time we cook. Or, to a bedroom upstairs, when using Teflon, only occasionally. Teflon is dangerous only when gases are released on intense heat - when cooking. If you don't have a separate room, just replace your cookware.

    Hey! Can someone PLEASE help me!?
    I have a budgie. I have had him since September 22nd of 2014 and I was able to get him to sit on my finger but now he doesn't seem to be willing and when he does he just starts biting or pinching my fingers like crazy. He tends to go towards my nail and just start biting or nipping to the point that hes getting some skin lol it's like getting a painful manicure. Is this natural? He doesn't seem to be doing it to be mean since sometimes he will just stop and start scratching himself and look around. Sometimes if I put my finger near him he will move away and at times I follow but I try not to and other times he will put one foot on my finger and start going at it with the biting or whatever he's doing. He isn't drawing blood but it's more like a pinch (a very painful pinch)

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

      Delagrim Try to allow him to make the choice to get on your finger, do not force him, and see if that makes a difference. Does he like millet or some other type of treat? If so, you can hold it on the other side of your finger and require him to step up to get to the food (hold your finger without touching him, but where he can still step up). Beware, it may take some time and patience to get your bird to step up without coaxing, but it will be worth it! If he gets frustrated and nippy, back away and try again later. Also work on bonding with your bird a little more. Spend time talking to him, whistling, hand feeding and whatever your bird enjoys. Let me know things go with him!

    • @BruhHowDidIGetHere
      @BruhHowDidIGetHere 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Yup! I feed him millet. Once in a while he will get on my finger and while he's eating he will start to nibble on my finger a bit too. I try my best to bond with him. He is on my night stand next to my bed and I take him to the living room when I am going to be out the room for a long time so he should be used to me moving around lol but I will give it a try.. he's a nice bird other than the biting. He normally keeps quiet when I'm sleeping or when i'm sick :D

    how can you let out your bird without haveing it poop everywhere?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 лет назад

      PuffyTigerToy That is tough. Birds tend to poop as they need to, and although I have heard of larger parrots being trained to potty in certain areas, smaller birds are more difficult when it comes to that. It may help to take your bird out for shorter periods and then allow it to take a break in its cage, but even that, unfortunately, doesn't guarantee that it won't poop when out.
