  • Musical: Romeo et Juliette; La Haine et L'Amour
    Song: Avoir Une Fille (To Have A Girl)
    This one was triiiicky. I apoligize if there are more small errors in here then usual
    Please understand that I am not fluent in French, so these subtitles are not perfect. I created these videos for other people who don't speak French to get a basic idea of the plot. If you're fluent in French and think that I'm completely off the mark with the subtitles, let me know, and I might redo the video. But please understand that I did the best I could.
    But I hope more English speakers will become interested in this great musical by learning more details about the plot. Again, please don't assume this is a perfect translation (the French lyrics are simply better on their own) , but I put a lot of work into these videos, and I hope people will like them.

    I really love this song, I can listen to it over and over again without getting bored.
    Sébastien is perfect in this role, he is the best Lord Capulet. When he sings we hear in his voice all the emotion & all the love he has for his daughter.

    I love that your posting these songs. I speak french but love to see how people translate these things. My only comment is I think "to have a daughter" fits better than "to have a girl". Both are grammatically correct but i think daughter just fits the context better. I hope you keep posting things like this. You should maybe look into doing other french musicals.

    I'm curious; if a woman were to sing this, would the French lyrics need to be changed that much, other than "en m'appelant monsieur" and possibly "traiter les femmes comme je l'ai fait?" Any thoughts on alternate lyrics that could work in place of those phrases, or other phrases that would need to be changed?
    Thanks for the input, this is a great translation! :)

    • @pasca15qc
      @pasca15qc 9 лет назад +4

      I think it would actually work if the singer was a woman, but it would seem a little but strange I think because we see that the feelings is really from a father that have no confidence in the male gender and want to protect her daughter. But yeah it would be interesting to see it in the mother point of view ^^

      I think that, yes, the lyrics would need to be changed, because, a father and a mother haven't the same relationship with their daughter, a mother help her daughter to grow, a father want to protect her. (sorry if it's wrong sometimes, I'm french ^v^'`>

    That could have been but that's not it, as in the end he means exactly that the new person will be the one crying about the difficulty of having a daughter when he himself will be no more. Precisely "To have a daughter is to keep on hoping, to keep on believing, that when at last the day of my death has come, she will be carrying, deep in her body(belly) that spark of him or her who one day too will come, out of love and with a heavy heart, crying out....."to have a daughter etc..."" end of song

    I'm asian and I learned both French and English, but still can't understand the phrase "To make a woman a small virtuoso before its range". Could someone explain, or paraphrase it for me?
    .
    And also the phrase "To have a daughter is to do a crime where the culprit is the victim", could someone tell me why a farther would have such feeling?

    • @princemordred
      @princemordred 9 лет назад +4

      the correct translation is "before its scale " otherwise say before its basic .
      the "Crime "is fathered a daughter to see it grow, worried about her , then leave for getting married.
      la traduction correcte est "avant ses gamme " autrement dit avant ses base .
      le crime est de engendré une fille pour la voir grandir , s'inquiété pour elle puis la voire partir pour se marier .

    • @jvillar12
      @jvillar12 8 лет назад +2

      +Duc Hoang Lan Ngo I'm only learning French myself, but I think "une petite virtuose avant ses gammes" means "a little virtuoso at her scales" (as in practicing musical scales).
      As to the second, I don't think he literally thinks that having a daughter was a crime. He obviously loves her and is in a lot of emotional turmoil over their disagreement concerning her marriage. It is very painful to be having a fight with someone you love. Thus, the word "crime" is an exaggeration, meant to reinforce the "culprit is the victim" part that follows. That is, "This is very painful. I am the victim, but I set myself up for this kind of heartache when I had a daughter."

      번역본만 봐서 프랑스어와 제 모국어의 차이를 잘 모르겠지만 제 생각에는 본인도 아내를 쟁취하기 위해 장인어른에게 범죄를 저질렀기 때문에 범죄자라고 말하는 것 같아요 그리고 본인이 딸을 키우고 지켜보고 마침내 딸의 남자친구가 생겼을 때 마침내 본인이 피해자가 된 것 아닐까요 본인이 아내를 꼬시기 위해 많은 수단과 방법을 사용했고 그래서 내 딸의 남자친구가 딸을 꼬시기 위해 쓴 방법도 알 수 밖에 없기 때문에…

      (Sorry for my broken english i am french ^^')
      When he says "having a daugther is a crime" it is because he is a man and all his life he has treated and he has seen men around him treating women like they were nothing, women have no rights and they have to listen to men. So he is aware that having a daughter is to put her in danger from men.
      "where the culprit is the victim" juliette is the culprit but also the victim because she is the "temptation" that men will want but she will be the victim of their malicious thoughts and bad treatment.
      I hope it is clear and the you will understand ^^

    • @elosymphonie6196
      @elosymphonie6196 Год назад

      And about the line "to make a woman a smal virtuose before her range" it is a metaphore using music. It is a little hard to explain but i think he mean that he wanted to wait to give her to someone
      At the begining of the musical Paris ask Juliette's hand and her father refuse and says that she is to young and not ready for a wedding, and with this song we understand that he wanted to keep and protect her a little longer. But Tybalts is dead and juliette is unconsolable so he feels like he has no other choice to give her to Paris even if he thinks she's too young.
